2008 Woodward Dream Cruise Attracts 1.4M
For those who believed that $4 gasoline and a teetering Michigan economy would put a damper on the 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise, we can safely say: Wrong! So wrong, in fact, that the 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise might be the best turnout in the history of the event. Oakland County Sheriffs estimated that 1.4 million people and somewhere near 40,000 vehicles are circling the cruise route today. Encouraged by warm, clear weather, the event is going strong now and will continue until 9:00 p.m., when police will begin to close down the route and send cruisers into sidestreets to shuttle traffic away from Woodward.
NextAutos was on hand as a part of the Dream Show, the Dream Cruise’s first ever organized car show. The event, consisting of ten vehicle classes and held at the Northwood Shopping Center at 13 Mile and Woodward, was a resounding success. Organizers of the show Dick Ruzzin, Tim Hartge and Dale Dawkins created a first-class event, with 50 vehicles amongst ten classes. We played a part in judging the factory performance and heavily modified muscle car classes. Dan Webb’s custom wedge roadster won Best in Show.

I think high priced gas will only cause people to plan trips better. They will probably think more before just jumping into the car for a quick shopping trip, perhaps combining errands into one longer trip instead of multiple short trips. For an event that people want to take in, they will just budget for it. It may also be that locals may swell the number of participants at local events instead of taking vacations farther from home.

Car shows have been going on in Ferndale, during the WDC, for the past fourteen years. These include their Classic car show (14 yrs), Mustang Alley car show (10 yer) and the Emergency Vehicles show (8 yrs).

Dear WDC Fan
For the first time in 14 years the WDC created an event that was managed by the WDC and not others e.g. Ford, GM, etc. The purpose of this show was to bring only the best hot rods, muscle cars and custom cars, ten categories of past, present and future, including a green hot rod category together in one place at one time to conduct a juried car show, concours style. To my knowledge this has never been done before in the “hot rod world".
These cars were stunning. Next year the event will host a "first time shown" category, called the Ruzzin Trophy. These new hot rods, customs etc, will debut for the first time. What better place than the world's largest automotive event, the Woodward Dream Cruise. It is truly the celebration of the automobile. Stay Tuned for next year.
