2009 International Car Of The Year Nominees Announced
Each year, a jury of well-seasoned automotive personnel give out the International Car of the Year awards in a big ceremony to kick off the North American International Auto Show festivities. This year will be no different, and the final nominees have officially been announced. The Dodge Challenger, Ford Flex, and Nissan GT-R will do battle for the International Car of the Year title, while the Dodge Ram 1500, Ford F-150, and Subaru Forester duke it out for the International Truck of the Year honors.
In addition, the jury will be presenting their first-ever Earth, Wind & Power awards, showcasing cars that help to reduce global warming and promote a cleaner environment. For this new award, the BMW 335d, Volkswagen Jetta TDI, and Jetta SportWagen TDI are the nominees for Car of the Year, and the BMW X5 35d, Ford Escape Hybrid, and Mercedes-Benz ML320 Bluetec are in the runnings for Truck of the Year.
Which cars will reign supreme? We'll have to wait until the official awards ceremony set to take place on January 10 at Detroit's MGM Grand casino. In the meantime, click through the above gallery to see all of the nominees and stay tuned for the winners.

It will be American. I would have guessed a sympathy vote for something GM, but they aren't even on the short lists. If gas was still high I would guess the Ford Hybrid. It may still take it. F-150 also.

The tundra has a weaker wheel base (chassis) than any of the trucks offered by the other companies. it also has bouncing bed problems. Having a modern engine with all the funky technologies in a truck can be bad for those who fix their cars on their own, which is most of those living in the suburbs.
I agree the interior quality is way better than any american truck. but toyota is not as specialized in trucks as americans.

I have a feeling it's gonna be the GTR. I felt down a bit when I saw it since it looks different from the concept and the price is arguable. I know it is a great car but the pricing would made ppl prefer other cars. I don't think many would go for a 80k nissan, even though I think it is not horrible pricing for what you get. the only thing I have against the pricing is the fact it is double the price of the Z350 which is the 2nd most expensive nissan.

Nissan has NO problems selling each and every one of the GTR's, even in this market. Besides, people aren't comparing the GTR to an Altima dude, people are comparing it to a Porsche 911 Turbo. Given it's performance and technology, 80k is friggin bargain!! Hell, there are 911 Turbo AND Z06 OWNERS lined up to add a GTR to their stables.

It's "International" Car, right? So why all the big gas guzzling vehicles you would never see outside the US and Canada? Is this like our "World Series". Nothing 'World' or 'International' about it. The Dodges should never have been placed on the list, period. And the Ford Flex?!? Are you being serious?
I say (to be "International") you could only pick the GT-R (price tag and all) and the Subaru Forrester (the only one sold outside North America).
For the Earth, Wind & Fire... I mean Power, the Jetta TDI wins out due to three factors. 1) Engineering, 2) Mileage, 3) Carbon Footprint. The 335d has the Engineering, the Jetta Sportwagen as well, but the overall Mileage and Carbon Footprint leave the TDI the winner. In the "Truck/SUV" Category, the Escape Hybrid could get the sympathy vote here, but then you're ignoring the lack of Engineering, the poor mileage (compared to the other platforms Ford borrowed the Hybrid design from), and the Carbon Footprint. It's a tossup, but I'd have to call it for M-B ML320 Blu-Tec.
