A Plea for the Return of RWD to WRC

In a recent post on his bastion of automotive purity, Unabashed Gearhead Gnarlyness, Diego Rodriguez makes a plea for the return of the rear-wheel-drive rally car. Rodriguez argues that modern all-wheel-drive technology makes the game too easy for the god-like talents that inhabit the world of WRC, robbing spectators of the true magic the pilots are capable of.

Strong evidence for the case can be found in the video above, which summarizes Patrick Snijers’ absolute destruction of the Manx Rally in his Prodrive fettled BMW M3. Watch the video and then tell us if you would support a return to rear-drive in WRC.

It's been how long since RWD was in FIA rally racing? The 70's, I think. The WRC didn't even exist back then. Keep it 4WD. It's pretty damn entertaining as is. Leave it alone.

RWD works for me and that video shows some superlative driving...

Steve

I agree.  Rally just doesn't do it for me at all, and this would make it more interesting... Bring a wider variety of cars, makers, and drivers into the fold...

That was awesome.

But it was all tarmac. Put an RWD on dirt and it slows down significantly while and AWD can keep the quick pace. I don't care if some sections of the race are slower, but at least as a spectator it's a lot more fun seeing all four wheels spitting dirt from a car going sideways at 60 than watching a car's rear wheels sink into soft earth with the car just inching along.

I guess I'm not completely opposed to the idea, but it would be interesting to hear what the drivers think about it

chartguy

Sorry, but it ain't the AWD/4WD that's the problem. It's the electronics. Whether it's the ABS, or the fancy computerized differentials, or launch control, these computers are allowing the drivers to do things that they could not do without the electronic aids. Watch him lock and roll tires through corners in the video. That's the difference, not which wheels are supplying forward thrust.

While I appreciate seeing the front-engine, rear-wheel drive BMW flying around the corners, if you force that format onto the series, how long will it be before they've moved the center of gravity to the rear axle?  In fact, the author is probably a Porsche fanatic.

I don't have a problem with having a RWD class, but I would not outlaw AWD. I would cut WAY back on what can be done with hydraulics and electronics. Why not require open diffs and prohibit wheel rotation and drivetrain rotation sensors. That would bring it back towards the real world. Drivers would be forced to modulate throttle and brake based on feel -- what they haven't had to do nearly as much of lately.

CEMaine

So Right. The first Quattros and Delta Integrales were just brute force 4WD. No fancy electronics or all that crap. Just sheer power run through basic 4WD drivetrains.
I will never forget watching Buffum in the North Woods Rally.

Jonathan Fung

I like AWD in WRC, but I also have nothing against allowing RWD in.  But for sure, that video was an amazing display of driving. I was so sure the car was going to unglue itself from the road at so many points in the video, but it didn't.  Absolutly crazy.

Chartguy makes a great point: it's not just about where the torque goes, but how it gets massaged along the way. Removing electronics and "smart" mechanical systems would go a long way toward getting back to the essence of rallying as pure driving.

Am I a Porsche fanatic? Yes. I'm also a BMW fanatic, and a fanatic about just about every other interesting car marque that's ever rolled across the face of the planet. I'd love to have an E30 M3 sitting in the garage...

Hi Diego,

I'm glad you liked my viewpoint. I love to watch rally cars. I consider it driving in three dimensions. The best drivers are actually applying downforce (via momentum) to different corners as needed - that's what the Finnish Flick is all about. But you probably knew that already.

What I was driving at (ouch), was that to drive a rally car involves using the suspension travel that's available, rather than the F1/go-kart suspensions that seem to have more sidewall flex than actual suspension travel. Aerodynamic downforce (and electronics) have done even more damage to that series than electronics have done to WRC.  That's what I love most about WRC, that the drivers use the suspensions. Even driving on a frozen lake, you use the polar moment to apply downforce to corners of the car. In that case, the car is going up and down and the road is level.

Gianni

Check out some of the footage from the late 70's of the Ford Escort RS on the 1,000 Lakes or RAC - no inching, but lots of fabulous opposite lock...

BTW Lancia used RWD in '83 on the WRC and Toyota and Nissan used it until 1986.

rally cars

Yep, comment up there is spot on, it's the electronics (specifically all the active diffs and controls) that are ruining it cost-wise and spectacle wise. Although, recent reg changes sre going to hopefully begin to claw back some of that. The 4WDs are still spectacular, just less of the balancing act of the RWDs... I wouldn't want to see them banned, but I'd certainly like to see more RWD action like that above!

Micaman

I'm a huge fan of rallying and this guy is just insane! I'd love to be on the passenger seat for a couple of minutes...

My new hero!

rose online zuly

You need to go through long distances sometimes, making you buy a lot of Teleport scrolls with your Rose zuly just to go to the cities. The quests are OK and have a good storyline so far, and you will gain a good amount of experience by grinding and rose zulie too. Something I liked in this game was the nice design of the clothes can have from rose online zuly. There also armor also can gain from rose online zulie sets that can be wore by any class. Another nice thing that I would like to talk about, is that you can have nice Arua ROSE zuly in ROSE Online.

The rectangle shaped face needs links of londonjewelry that adds width and camouflages the length of the face. A highchoker reduces the length of the face, particularly if the neck is toolong. In addition, a 16¡å or 18¡å necklace that ends in a ¡°U¡±flatters this face. Long hair and narrow links of london is perfect match which can impress others as a fair lady. Fancy clothes coordinating links of london with slight tint could be better.

Im 18 years old and as a struggling student who enjoys racing UGG
Boots
ultra short Le its becoming extremely expensive and harder to
attend and enjoy a days racing.
Sure a student with a part time UGGS upside job would
have to save for a few weeks to consider attending a raceday as expensive as
this. I see that
Fairyhouse are racing on the 19th of this month and are charging UGGS
whitely boots 5e entry fee.
Its up to other tracks to follow suit and use some initiative to offer better
value to the normal racegoer….Pretty good air jordan post. I just found your site and wanted to say that I have really
enjoyed browsing your Bailey Button UGG Boots posts. In any case I’ll be
subscribing to your blog and I hope you nike sb post again soon! UGG Boots
