Spied: 4×4 Ferrari 612! No Kidding, Folks
Science project alert! Ferrari is hard at work on their "Insertable 4x4" system, which looks to debut in the facelifted 612 Scaglietti. Our spy shot photographer, Hans Lehmann, caught the 4x4 612 in testing in Maranello, showing a meaner air intake setup that takes some cues from the 599 GTB Fiorano. Notice the stethoscope-like structures on the front wheels, which appear to be used to measure wheel slip to determine how much power to distribute to the front/rear.
With the facelift of the 612 Scaglietti there will also be a four wheel drive option, which is being tested on this prototype. The test equipment on the front wheels is needed to measure the degree of front wheel slip in order to properly calibrate the computer system controlling how much power is being transferred.
Ferrari has developed a new optional four-wheel drive system called “Insertable 4x4.

This isn't really that surprising.
Here in Sweden everybody in the market for these cars buys porches and lamborghinis because of the 4 wheel drive. So it makes sense for them to offer competition in such areas of the world where snowfall is common in the winter. Even more so with the expanding Russian market.

Lucas - AWD is a great way to stick to the road for cars that have a lot of power, usually the added weight far outweighs the benefits. No more squealing tires and fishtailing will be at a minimum. The added grip you get is well worth it. And traction control via braking just plain sucks, put it on the road, where it belongs. Long live AWD!

The system in the Lambo is called... QUATTRO... and is from Audi. Taking a p1ss against it is bordeline ridiculous. Yeah, sure an AWD system that instantly and mechanically transfert the torque to the wheels with the most grip is really what can be called a reducer of drivetrain efficiency...
When a brand have to decry the other manufacturers to look good i can only feel pity.
Beside what Ferrari is doing is nothing more than the AWD system of the Nissan Skyline GTR R34. These systems always have computer induced lag weights a lot and sometimes make the car 'imprevisible' since you don't always know when the front traction stabiliser will kick in....
Ferrari should keep it real...

Braking is slower due to the fact that youve added more weight, and as far as how its going to be ‘imprevisible’ i dont know about that as you can still shut the system off, and you are still dealing with a monster of a machine, it sounds more like a ploy to bring the 612 into other markets than to use the 4WD from a performance standpoint (ie. Subbies, Audis, LancerEvos, and even the Lambos) Basicly, its still a ferrari, a little more "junk in the trunk" but still, none the less , a ferrari

If they can develop an entirely new air intake system that allows the car to be means and zipper through the air then it would be a great boost especially for the 612.
