Monterey Automobile Week Kicks Off

pebble-daimler.jpg

Monterey Automobile Week, the greatest assemblage of auto shows, auctions, miscellaneous sales and historic races anywhere on the planet, kicks off today and will run through Sunday. It includes, among other things, the Historic Car Races at Laguna Seca, six auctions; four different concours d’elegance, two automobilia sales, a party at Monterey airport, and various and sundry other attractions, including the world’s priciest used-car lot.

The Laguna Seca races are the 34th since Steve Earle made this form of the sport into a spectator attraction in the U.S., and the Pebble Beach Concours – this is where it all started in 1950 – will be the 57th annual. The Historics have practice Friday, races Saturday and Sunday. The Concours takes place Sunday.

Hotel rooms are scarce if not impossible to find, and prices have gone up, which in this era is practically standard practice at the site of any major sporting event. But even if you have a room, bring more money. Admission tickets to most (but not all) of the concours, parties and auctions will run somewhere north of $1,700 per person, if you can still find a ticket.

There are also events with no admission charge, such as the Blackhawk exposition at Pebble Beach, dubbed the world’s fanciest used-car lot. You can find one as cheap as $150,000, and some with price tags topping $2 million. On a more enthusiast level, the Pebble Beach Tour for concours entries, which departs from the polo field at 8:30 Thursday morning, is one of the world’s great sights if you are a vintage car fan.

Incidental intelligence: Activity actually started last weekend, with the Monterey Prehistorics, Earle’s no-spectator races held to weed out the excess entries and inexperienced drivers before the main event.

Congrats to those who have the pleasure (and money) to enjoy the week. That is far above what I can produce.

I was there last year and it was great. Didn't actually pay to get into any of the events, just hung around the city for the weekend and got my fill of incredible automobiles through that alone.

Sharky

Lots of old rich ladies tarted up in flapper garb with their pasty white husbands in bow ties and hats. The cars are beautiful, but the Wealthy American Idiocy on display is so stupid. No, I'm not jealous -- it really is stupid.

Ducati Minor

How so?

Don

You're jealous.

So am I.

Actually, it's truly one of the great spectacles of automobilia. I live here in Monterey, so I'm spared the cost of hotel rooms, but it hasn't always been that way...

Even if you just pony up the $40 or so dollars to attend the event at Laguna, it's well worth the price to hear vintage iron (both domestic and foreign) racing around the track in their native environment.

This year it's vintage Indianapolis race cars. But as usual, there will be a plethora of other automotive icons in attendance. This doesn't even include the fact that there are quite a few older racers around (Redman, Rahal, etc.) that are totally accessible to the fans. I talked with Boris Said for a few minutes a couple of years ago. What a nice guy. Happy to chat about the vintage 3.0 CSL BMW which he was racing that day.

Is there pretension there? Yes--some. But don't let that ruin it for you. If I tried to universally avoid pretension in California, I'd never leave the house.

Diego

I agree with Jason. You can blow off the Quail, the Concours Italiano (possibly the worst-organized event I've ever been to), and Pebble Beach and just go to see the Real Deal, racing cars being raced around Laguna. It's a hell of a lot cheaper, you see more, and it's a much more grounded atmosphere.

If you really want to save some bucks, you can sign up ahead of time and score a campsite at Laguna, or find a cheap motel in Salinas or even up in Gilroy and drive down to the races each day.
