‘08 Chicago: The Official Skinny on Hummer’s 2009 H3T Pickup

2009 Hummer H3T Alpha

Although a number of outlets have slowly leaked information on the H3T, we now can bring you more official information on the new Hummer pickup, which will be revealed to the press corps at next week’s Chicago auto show.

As could be guessed, the H3T is little more than a four-door H3 with a five-foot long pickup bed in lieu of the standard cargo area. That’s approximately the same size as the crew-cab box on the H3T’s platform cousin, the Chevrolet Colorado. Hummer claims the bed is capable of hauling a snowmobile, two dirt bikes or a sheet of plywood; standard adjustable bed-rail tie-downs help secure any cargo out back.

The H3T will be offered in four different trim levels, three of which come equipped with the base 242-horsepower 3.7-liter I-5. Like the standard H3, a five-speed manual is standard fare with the I-5, although a four-speed automatic is optional. Also like its SUV brethren, the H3T is offered in Alpha spec, which uses GM’s 300-horsepower 5.3-liter small-block V-8, coupled only to a four-speed automatic.

Two suspension packages are offered on the H3T. The Z85 Heavy Duty Handling and Trailering package comes standard, which includes 32-inch all-terrain tires on 16-inch steel wheels, heavy-duty shocks and either a 4.56- or 4.10- ratio rear axle, depending on if the truck is equipped with the I-5 or V-8, respectively.

Hummer enthusiasts may chose the Off-Road Adventure package instead, which equips the H3T with 33-inch tires, specially-tuned shocks, locking front and rear differentials and a 4.03:1 low-range gearing in the transfer case. Manual H3Ts equipped with this package sport a crawl ratio of 68.9, while trucks with the four-speed automatic feature a 56.2 ratio instead.

The H3T will be built alongside the H3 and Colorado at GM’s Shreveport, Louisiana facility. Production should begin in the third quarter of 2008. Expect to see the H3T marketed not only in North America, but also in Europe and the Middle East.
