Buyer’s Guide: 2009 Suzuki XL7

Car Summary

The seven-passenger crossover segment is growing very rapidly, and although the Suzuki XL7 is a decent player in this market, the GMC Acadia/Saturn Outlook and Ford Edge are better choices all around.

No big surprises here. The XL7 provides adequate power and handling, and the optional all-wheel drive puts the power of the V-6 engine where it belongs. A comfortable ride is compromised by uncomfortable seating.

Pros

  • Five-star safety rating for front- and side-impact crash tests.
  • Optional seven-passenger seating.
  • Other optional equipment includes electronically-controlled all-wheel drive and DVD-based navigation.

Cons

  • Exterior styling is an acquired taste. The front headlamps are a bit too angular and the rear bits look very last-generation.
  • Interior parts sharing with GM is very obvious. The buttons and knobs are reminiscent of a last-generation Saturn Vue.
  • All-wheel drive is not available on the base model.
