Can You Design A Bike to Get Drivers Pedaling?

The Bicycle Design blog has opened up a competition, whose goal is to find bike designs that might convince more commuters to get out of their cars and on to a cycle as often as possible. Bike maker Cannondale has agreed to chip in one of its Bad Boy bikes (pictured above) as a prize for the winning design.

Contestants are asked to design a cycle that could, “persuade the average person, with no prior interest in cycling, to park the car and pedal to work.” No mean feat, to be sure, but one that we’d guess will provide a fertile starting place for ambitious concepts. Thinking outside of the current market will be a key to success here, though submissions are required to not “break the laws of physics, etc.” Fair enough.

Click through the link below for more contest details and submission requirements, and be sure to check back in to see the results after the contest is called on December 5th.

Add two wheels, an engine, and a roof and you might have a design that will accomplish that goal.

A perfect bike should be able to provide a little comfort to new users.
A self-extended stand when the bike is not moving will be a good start.

Here in Southern California it will take some much more fundamental changes to make a bicycle practical for most people to use for commuting. Before I retired, my job was 25 miles from my house by the most direct route. That route was a freeway, no bicycles allowed. The most direct bicycle route would probably be closer to 30 miles over a pretty formidable hill. I was often on 24 hour call required to be at work within 1 hour of being called. No design of any bicycle would have been a practical alternative for me. My wife works at a hospital an easy 4 miles from our house. She has thought of trying to commute by bicycle, but if she did she would need a place to shower and change before starting work. Until employers install shower facilities for employees, commuting by bicycle is probably not a practical solution for most people.
