Spy Shots: First Look at Production Mercedes-Benz E-Class? [Update: Interior Shots!]

Spy photographers are a bit on the unpredictable side by their very natures, foregoing time clock and schedule in favor of waiting out the newest and freshest in unseen automobilia. Sometimes that mutable lifestyle can lead to interesting results, such as this recent submission of totally unexplained Mercedes-Benz E-Class images.

The three trim level seen here—labeled Classic, Elegance, and Avantgarde—would seem to be an early finished look at the next generation E-Class. The overall look is a more sculpted and edgy package than the current car, something that has certainly been hinted at in the camouflaged spy images we’ve seen to date. Have a closer look in our gallery above.

Update: We’ve gotten some interior shots to go along with the initial three images of the new E-Class this morning, with a few added details as well. As best we can make out, even the standard interior will come with the buyer’s choice of Nappa leathers, while a spat of chrome accents and eucalyptus trim come into play on the more premium trim levels. You’ll see this in more in the new photos above.

Mercedes-Benz Releases CLS Grand Edition for 2009

Even though Mercedes-Benz is working on a refresh for the CLS <strike>sedan</strike> "four-door coupe," the folks in Stuttgart have created this latest special version of the CLS, called the Grand Edition. Most strikingly, this CLS is available in platinum matte paint which Mercedes-Benz says is highly stratch- and dirt-resistant. However, if matte isn't your thing, black, siler, red, and grey are also available on request.

The CLS Grand Edition comes standard with bi-xenon headlamps, AMG eighteen-inch wheels coated a in titanium grey finish and housed inside 245/40 rubber up front and 275/35 tires out back. Additionally, the Designo interior comes with an Alcantara headliner and six different leather choices. Laurel wood trim and stainless steel pedals are also standard.

As for power, U.S. customers can expect the same 5.5-liter V-8 from the normal CLS550, while Global customers can choose from other powertrain options. The Grand Edition officially goes on sale today for €67,294 (around $93,000) and the first deliveries will take place in March. Click through the post for Mercedes-Benz's official press release.

Stuttgart – The new CLS Grand Edition special-edition model sees Mercedes-Benz introducing a new highlight to the segment for four-door premium coupés. A matt designo paint finish lends spectacular definition to the lines of the coupé and makes the CLS Grand Edition really catch the eye. This exclusive style is echoed in the interior with high-grade designo leather and high-quality equipment details. All of which makes the multi-design-award-winning Mercedes-Benz Coupé unmistakable.

Coupés are truly special cars. Not least the Mercedes Coupés, which have always epitomised automotive elegance, exclusivity and refinement at the very highest level. With the CLS, Mercedes-Benz paved the way for four-door coupés. The trend-setting model from Stuttgartinspires coupé enthusiasts with its exciting and muscular styling.

Even more pronounced lines through new paint

The new Mercedes-Benz CLSGrand Edition catches the eye straight away. A unique "designo magno platinum" matt paint finish brings the lines and contours of the premium Coupé fully to the fore and emphasises its multi-award-winning design. As well as being an eye-catching feature, the matt paint finish is highly scratch- and dirt-resistant. In keeping with the avant-garde paintwork, the radiator grille louvres are also painted in "designo magno platinum".
The Grand Edition customers can select from a choice of metallic paint finishes: obsidian black, iridium silver, carneol red or flint grey.

The additional exterior equipment for the CLSGrand Edition includes:

    * Bi-xenon headlamps with dark headlamp casings, active light function and cornering light function in the fog lamps, headlamp cleaning system, and dynamic headlamp range adjustment
    * Exclusive, high-sheen AMG18-inch 5-spoke light-alloy wheels with pockets painted in titanium grey, shod with 245/40 R 18 (front) and 275/35 R 18 (rear) tyres
    * A "Grand Edition" insignia on the front wings

designo interior displaying sporty, elegant touches

The no-nonsense elegance continues inside the car. Here a perfectly matched designo interior and a roof lining in anthracite Alcantara, together with the standard-fit tilting/sliding glass roof, define the sporty, elegant style. Special touches are provided by the designo leather upholstery in "marron" – with the option of substituting this shade for sand, black, mystic red, porcelain or chablis.

The trim elements in high-quality laurel wood can be ordered with either a matt or a high-gloss finish. The same material is used for the selector lever and the wood/leather steering wheel. Sport pedals in brushed stainless steel with rubber studs underline the sporting credentials of the CLSGrand Edition.

The extensive range of equipment includes the sophisticated COMAND APSMultimedia control and display system, comfort telephony, PARKTRONIC and "Grand Edition" velour floor mats.

Pioneering engine technology in the CLS 350 CGI

There are four engine variants available for the CLSGrand Edition, including the V6 unit for the entry-level CLS280 model and, perhaps most impressively of all, the CGIdirect-injection power plant for the CLS350 CGImodel, offering high output and low fuel consumption. This V6 engine with piezoelectric direct injection and spray-guided combustion develops 215 kW/292 hp and consumes just 9.1 litres of premium unleaded petrol per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined).

The Mercedes-Benz CLSGrand Edition can be ordered from January 2, 2009. Prices start at 67,294.50 Euros incl. VAT (CLS280 Grand Edition). The deliveries to customers start in March 2009.

Mercedes-Benz will be showing its special edition SLR Stirling Moss next month at the Detroit Auto Show -- sort of a last hurrah for the Mercedes/McLaren partnership. Powered by a supercharged V-8 engine, the SLR will be good for 650 horsepower and able to sprint from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 3.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 217 mph.

The design of the SLR Stirling Moss was inspired by the original 1950 300 SLR, and the current car has an extremely striking resemblance to the classic car. The open-top speedster design is indeed unique, yet functional -- the integrated air scoops also serve as roll bars.

Only 75 examples of the SLR Stirling Moss will be built, retailing at €750,000 each. (That's just over $1 million in USD.) We'll give you the full details from the Cobo Hall floor next month.

Spy Shot: Merccedes-Benz R-Class Facelift Spotted

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t exactly racked up design accolades for its minivanesque R-Class crossover (much more on that in our spy shooter’s hilarious comments below), despite its being rather competent to drive. Bearing that in mind, the German automaker has set about doing a redesign of the R, seen for the first time in this set of spy shots.

From the placement of the camouflage on this test car it seems apparent that M-B is primarily working to update the front end of the R-Class, hopefully devising a face that is more in-line with the rest of the attractive Mercedes lineup. Have a closer look at the mule in our gallery above.

Mercedes are giving their R-Class a major make over, but will that help to make the ugly duckling to a beautiful swan?

The R-Class was never a bad car; it was just too expensive, too big and hmm…too ugly. And the market didn’t want a car that was more of an ugly four-wheel drive, S-Class van, at least not that many customers. So the first step was to offer the R-Class in a two-wheel drive version as well to make it cheaper, didn’t help. Second step, make the AMG exterior package standard to make it look better, didn’t help either.

So that leaves us to this step, try to make it less ugly with more radical methods. The rear was never the problem, but the front…. the current R-Class has a face only a mother could love. Hidden under this camouflage is now the new and face lifted version testing, a version that hopefully will give the R-Class the face it deserves. With a little luck it gets a face similar to the new E-Class. The rear will only get smaller changes, like a newly shaped bumper with new exhaust pipes and rear lights with a new graphic.

Engines will also be updated to the new standards and we will see the face lifted R-Class at the Frankfurt Car Show in September as a 2010 model.

Mercedes Concept BlueZero Due for Detroit Auto Show

For the Detroit Auto Show in January, Mercedes plans to give the world a preview of three fuel-saving systems for its new entry-premium model range, which should replace the B-class by 2010. Known as Concept BlueZero, the technology will be shown in forms ranging from a purely electric car, a plug-in hybrid, and as a fuel cell model.

The electric model “E-Cell” will have a 100-kilowatt motor with a lithium-ion battery pack and a range of around 60 miles. The plug-in hybrid on the other hand will feature a three-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric generator to extend the car's range in electric mode (similar to what General Motors plans for the Chevrolet Volt). The third model called the F-Cell, will use a fuel cell and hydrogen tanks to produce the necessary electricity.

Mercedes' plan is to replace the B-class and A-class with four cars, which include a coupe to compete with the BMW 1-series, and also an SUV to rival BMW's upcoming X1. These replacements are slated to be built in Rastatt, Germany, as well as in Kecskemet, Hungary where M-B will open up shop by 2010. Have a look at the full press release for Concept BlueZero below and take a look at a few images of the car in our attached gallery.

Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZERO

12/15/08

Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz is showing the way ahead in environmentally responsible electromobility by presenting its near-series Concept BlueZERO at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Based on a single vehicle architecture, this intelligent, modular concept allows three models with different drive configurations, all of which are able to meet customer requirements in terms of sustainable mobility:

    * the BlueZERO E-CELL with battery-electric drive and a range of up to 200 kilometres using electric drive alone
* the BlueZERO F-CELL (fuel cell) with a range of well over 400 kilometres using electric drive
* the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS with electric drive and additional internal combustion engine as power generator (range extender). This version has an overall range of up to 600 kilometres and can cover a distance of up to 100 kilometres using electric drive alone.

The three BlueZERO variants are based on the unique sandwich-floor architecture which Mercedes-Benz introduced some ten years ago, initially for the A-Class and then for the B-Class, one of the aims being to integrate alternative drive systems. Advantages of the modified construction include the positive effect of the major drive components on the centre of gravity, their space-saving design and the fact that they are extremely well protected within the vehicle underbody. The five-seater BlueZERO concept cars also set standards in terms of lightweight design, interior layout and body form.

"The flexible BlueZERO concept allows electromobility for every requirement and highlights the fact that Mercedes-Benz is the world's only car manufacturer to already have in place all the key technologies for electric cars offering full everyday practicality", says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The BlueZERO principle: flexible design, compact exterior, generously sized interior

All three BlueZERO variants share the same key technical components, while the design and vehicle dimensions are identical. Measuring just 4.22 metres in length, the BlueZERO models combine compact exterior dimensions with a generously proportioned and variable interior and luggage compartment. Five fully-fledged seats, a payload of around 450 kilograms and a luggage compartment capacity of over 500 litres make for outstanding everyday practicality. Thanks to their sandwich construction with a raised sitting position, the cars also offer an exceptionally high level of crash safety for the passengers and the technology, not to mention excellent all-round visibility
Compared to electric cars based on conventional vehicle platforms and originally only designed for use in combination with internal combustion engines, Concept BlueZERO offers the following conclusive advantages:
* Interior space is retained in full. As the energy accumulators/generators are integrated into the spacious sandwich floor, no compromises are necessary when it comes to passenger space, luggage capacity or variability.
* The powertrain technology built into the sandwich floor ensures a low centre of gravity and, consequently, extremely reliable and agile handling.
* Crash safety is of the extremely high standard associated with Mercedes thanks to the sandwich concept and the housing of major powertrain components between the axles.

As a result, the BlueZERO models are very different to conventionally constructed electric cars, which have the heavy and voluminous storage battery housed in the boot or in the rear-seat area, for example.

Modular design ensures flexibility and efficiency

"Our modular system allows different drive configurations for every customer requirement", says Dr Thomas Weber, the member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars. "The modified sandwich-floor platform provides the perfect basis for a wide model range with electric drive systems. We are also developing a new, additional platform for future compact models with power units based on optimised internal combustion engines. The intelligent networking of both architectures enables us to develop our product portfolio extremely flexibly and efficiently. From 2009, we will be producing the first Mercedes fuel-cell cars on a small scale. Small-scale production of Mercedes-Benz cars with battery-electric drive alone will then commence in 2010. This means we are extremely well equipped for the future."

All three BlueZERO models feature front-wheel drive, which is typical for this class of car. The Mercedes engineers have put together a modular system comprising several flexibly combinable drive components. These include state-of-the-art liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries with a storage capacity of up to 35 kWh and the compact electric motor with a maximum output of 100 kW (continuous output 70 kW), which develops a peak torque of 320 Nm. All three variants accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 11 seconds. Their top speed is electronically limited to 150 km/h in the interests of optimal range and energy efficiency.

Electric drive systems with a range of 100, 200 and well over 400 kilometres

With a charging capacity of 15 kW, the powerful lithium-ion batteries in the BlueZERO E-CELL and the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS can store enough energy for a range of 50 kilometres within 30 minutes. In terms of purely electrical drive, one or two hours of charging time is needed for a range of 100 and 200 kilometres respectively. The charging times are doubled if the charging capacity is 7 kW, as would be the case in a normal household. Both of these BlueZERO vehicles incorporate an electronic control unit that supports intelligent charging stations and billing systems.

At the rear, the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS has the same 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the smart fortwo as an additional range extender. This compact three-cylinder powerplant has an output of 50 kW at a constant 3500 rpm. If required, it can recharge the 17.5-kWh lithium-ion battery by means of a similarly rated alternator. A range of up to 600 kilometres is possible on a single tank. The purely electrical, locally emission-free range is up to 100 kilometres. The BlueZERO F-CELL with fuel-cell drive achieves a range of well over 400 kilometres with zero emissions (as per NEDC).

BlueZERO design: both elegant and functional

Leading-edge technology is uniformly and attractively packaged in all three BlueZERO variants. The unique and distinctive Mercedes design idiom displayed by the body highlights the progressive nature of Concept BlueZERO straight away.

The powerfully elegant front end is dominated by the radiator grille with its centrally located star. The excellent aerodynamics of the BlueZERO are partly due to the closed front apron, whose design means that cooling air intakes are not required. The 20-inch wheels have also been aerodynamically optimised, while low-friction tyres reduce rolling resistance.

The striking character lines along the flanks lend the BlueZERO an extremely dynamic side line and accentuate its bionic structure inspired by nature. This characteristic feature of the Mercedes-Benz bionic car was adapted and modified for the BlueZERO models. These elements lend the body its dramatic power.

New-quality light production

The compact rear end of the Concept BlueZERO is characterised by tail lights in the shape of a curved "L". In addition, the Mercedes designers have achieved a new-quality light production: transparent lenses produce a red light curtain which tapers smoothly towards the sides, creating a lightly diffused effect. This effect is repeated, albeit in white this time, by the front headlamps. What's more, the front lights feature new lens technology and a plexiglas edge to produce "C" shaped daytime driving lights with the help of state-of-the-art LED technology.

Intelligent technology made visible

Translucent surfaces make the normally concealed technology visible. The light-grey tailgate is made completely from lightweight but highly robust Lexan that allows a view of the aluminium structure that makes up the rigidifying frame, for example. At the same time this transparent tailgate provides a view of the vehicle interior, making the advantages of the sandwich-floor platform obvious at a glance: for maximum customer benefit, the luggage compartment and passenger area remain fully usable, since there are no technical components that need to be accommodated here.

"It was very important for us to ensure that the guiding Mercedes-Benz principle of 'Fascination and Responsibility' was clearly reflected in the design of the Concept BlueZERO", says Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener. "This is yet another clear statement that environmental awareness and driving pleasure will continue to go together in our vehicles in the future. We want people to realise at first sight that the Concept BlueZERO is definitively not a lesser option."

The Mercedes-Benz designers have emphasised this aspiration by introducing paint finishes in three new ALU-BEAM colours. Each of the three variants makes its individual mark: the BlueZERO E-CELL is painted in a fresh lime green, while the BlueZERO F-CELL has mint green paintwork. Confidence-oozing orange was chosen for the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS.

Spy Shot: Mercedes-Benz S-Class Mule Spotted!

Our spy shooters have just reported in with a few images depicting the newly updated Mercedes-Benz S-Class, showing the lightly disguised car in trims ranging from the storming AMG-tuned sedan to the all-new S400 Hybrid. The facelifted cars feature new headlight treatments with LED daytime running lights, revised front and rear bumpers, and a gently updated look for the car’s grille.

Have a closer look at the upcoming range-topping Mercedes in our gallery above, or read on below for the spy shooter’s own words.

Here are some fresh photos of the Mercedes S-Class facelift, while the drivers took some lunch. Optical changes are rather small, with a new graphic on the front lights and integrated LED-daydriving lights. Rear lights will also get LEDs.

Bumpers in both front and rear will get a new shape, with new foglights in the front bumper as well. We also notice a new grille. Interior will also be slightly different, because these prototypes where covered inside.

Engines will be more fuel efficient, and there also will be a S400 Blue hybrid in the program.

As you can see, the AMG version also gets a facelift.

Spy Shots: Mercedes-Benz Gullwing Mule Caught In The Cold

It looks like the Mercedes-Benz engineers are still moving forward with the SLC Gullwing project, as our spy shooters recently caught the car testing in some bone-chilling weather. (-15 degrees Fahrenheit! Brr!)

According to the folks at CarPix, we can expect a twin-turbocharged V-8 under the hood producing roughly 600 horsepower. This engine will be mated to a seven-speed transmission and the car's body will be made of carbon fiber and aluminum to reduce overall weight. Look for a more production-ready version of this car to hit around 2010.

Scroll through the gallery of images above, or click through the post to read our spy shooter's own thoughts about the SLC Gullwing.

There is something about winter testing, it’s almost always dark, snowing or foggy. In this case dark and foggy, but we still want to show you these new photos of the Mercedes Gullwing while driving in the snow, at -26 degrees Celsius.

It’s not clear yet if it will wear the Mercedes symbol, the AMG badge or both but we can agree that it will have a tuff market when it’s time for presentation. Hopefully the financial crisis has calmed down until 2010 when the Gullwing will be official.

Expect a twin-turbo V8 with roughly 600 horsepower to find its place in the aluminum spaceframe, connected to a 7-speed gearbox. Body will be made of carbon fiber and aluminium to keep weight down.

In addition, the jury will be presenting their first-ever Earth, Wind & Power awards, showcasing cars that help to reduce global warming and promote a cleaner environment. For this new award, the BMW 335d, Volkswagen Jetta TDI, and Jetta SportWagen TDI are the nominees for Car of the Year, and the BMW X5 35d, Ford Escape Hybrid, and Mercedes-Benz ML320 Bluetec are in the runnings for Truck of the Year.

Which cars will reign supreme? We'll have to wait until the official awards ceremony set to take place on January 10 at Detroit's MGM Grand casino. In the meantime, click through the above gallery to see all of the nominees and stay tuned for the winners.

Spy Shot: New Mercedes-Benz GL Caught Winter Testing

Close students of the Mercedes-Benz GL SUV will be quick to notice the small revisions that have been visited on this mule, though the more casual observer may have a difficult time seeing the difference from the current vehicle. Our sharp spy shooter points out that Mercedes has updated the front bumper with cool LED driving lights, as well as different air intakes. The rear bumper has also been slightly massaged, along with the exhaust pipes and rear light clusters.

The GL engine range should stand as presently constituted for the new vehicle, though specific powerplants may be tweaked for small gains in fuel economy. Have a closer look at the new GL in our gallery of images above.

Yippieee, winter testing has started. And first out are these photos of a very small facelift of the Mercedes GL.
You really need to be a Mercedes fan, and especially a GL fan to notice the new changes. The front bumper is new, with some LED day driving lights and new shaped air intakes. Rear bumper is also new with a slightly new shape and new exhaust pipes. Rear lights will be full LEDs.

Engines are expected to be unchanged, but we suspect some minor changes to make them more fuel efficient.

Spy Shots: 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Convertible

Our spy photographers have gotten a first look at the latest Mercedes-Benz convertible, a car that is likely to be known as the E-Class convertible rather than a CLK convertible.

Longer and roomier than the current CLK droptop, this E-Class will share engine choices with the rest of the range, meaning everything from four-cylinder diesels to stonking AMG-tuned V-8s. The new car will be big enough to offer four real-people sized seats, with the front chairs said to have been redesigned to offer more leg room to rear passengers. With the newly named E-Class coupe expected to be entering the market in May of next year, it’s a good bet that the convertible variant will appear some bit later in 2009.

Click through our gallery above to explore the E-Class convertible in more detail or read on below for the spy shooter’s own words.

Times are changing, even at Mercedes. With the old CLK convertible being a soft top, the new one will not just change into a folding hardtop but also change its name.

Let us introduce the Mercedes E-class convertible.

Growing about 10 cm in length compared to the old CLK, this new convertible (and upcoming coupe) will be based on the new E-class platform. That also means that the engine options will be the same as we will find on the E-class sedan. Expect all between economical four cylinder diesels up to powerful V8 petrol machines from AMG.

The fact that the new convertible will be longer, and that the front seats will have a new shape on the rear side, will make the backseat passengers have more room for their legs. This will be a true four seat convertible.

With the E-class coupe out on the market in May 2009, we can expect the convertible version hit the showrooms after the car show in Frankfurt, meaning late 2009.

Spy Shot: 2010 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon

Mercedes-Benz and AMG are out and working on the next generation of one of that company’s oddest, and most exciting products; the totally bananas E63 AMG wagon.

Just the thing for sports car lovers who’ve a few kids, dogs, or loveseats to haul around, the radical E-Class is said to be sporting a 6.2-liter V-8 capable of more than 500 horsepower. The package will also feature huge cross-drilled brakes, a large set of quad exhaust pipes, lowered ride height (natch), and a new bumper with huge air intakes. We are still scratching our heads about the rear light clusters seen in these photos—a treatment that looks as much like a triple set of Maglites and some bicycle reflectors as anything right now—but we’ve no doubt that Mercedes will get the car all prettied up before launch.

Take a closer look at the AMG wagon in our gallery above and read on below for the spy shooter’s own comments.
What do you do if the family and the 2 big dogs you have don’t fit into your Porsche 911 anymore? Well, don’t worry; Mercedes AMG are developing a substitute for all you + 500 horsepower lovers. The new Mercedes E 63 AMG wagon.

It may not look as sporty as the Porsche, but beware when you put that pedal to the floor, this 6.2 liter V8 powered + 500 horsepower wagon will scare one or two sport car owners when showing up in the rear mirror. And when you have overtaken them, all they will remember are the four big exhaust pipes screaming “looser” to them.

At a closer inspection they will notice the big brakes with cross drilled discs behind those gigantic wheels and the lowered suspension. A new front bumper with some larger air intakes will be the most noticeable from the discreet body kit.

But, there is just one problem; you have to wait until the Frankfurt Car Show in September 2009 until you can get it.

Report: Next Mercedes-Benz SLK to Come with Diesel Option

A source within Mercedes-Benz has confirmed rumors that the next SLK roadster—due to debut in the spring of 2010—will offer an optional diesel engine. The redesigned SLK will likely sport the newest of Mercedes’ diesel offerings, a 2.2-liter twin-turbo four that produces 204 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. The BlueEfficiency diesel mill is capable of attaining 54.3 miles per gallon when used in the C250 CDI.

The source maintains that the diesel engine is “perfect” for the new SLK, providing enough power to make the car involving, while being economical enough with fuel to raise a few eyebrows in today’s marketplace.

We’re salivating at the proposed combination of a car we love, with an engine we admire, though there’s not a great chance that this one will be coming state-side.

+ Automotive News Europe: Next Mercedes SLK to offer a diesel

Mercedes-Benz Goes GLK Crazy for SEMA

Mercedes-Benz continues to try to shed its sometimes stodgy image, through liberal use of its rather funky GLK small SUV, some imaginative tuning houses, and everyone’s favorite Animal House-style auto show, SEMA.

We tend to believe that this sort of thing is only acceptable in Las Vegas, where bigger and brasher almost always overpowers good taste and sense. How else can you explain a GLK decked out like the Pike’s Peak Suzuki Escudo, or another chopped into a speedster that Lil John might find a bit obscene? All in good tuner fun we suppose. Click through the gallery above for the official M-B line on each concept or find the rest of the press release below.

Stuttgart/Las Vegas - Mercedes-Benz has created an unconventional presentation idea under the heading "Tuner Challenge". Ahead of the equally unconventional SEMA Show in the gaming hotspot of Las Vegas, the Stuttgart company announced a competition for tuning firms. The object of desire - the compact GLK-Class. The distinctively styled automotive character with an edge seems predestined to arouse a wide range of tuning fantasies.

Tuning operations were tasked with highlighting the possibilities presented by the GLK's wide-ranging talents through their ideas and designs. The four most convincing concepts were selected and the winners given the opportunity to implement their proposals. This process saw the creation of GLK models that are as leading-edge as they are unorthodox, and that now take centre stage in Mercedes' participation at this year's SEMA Show. "Widestar", "The GLK Urban Whip", "The GLK Pikes Peak Rally Racer" and "The GLK Rock Crawler" will attract attention even at SEMA, which is not exactly short on highlights and is becoming increasingly important as a trendsetting springboard for the European tuning scene. This presentation also represents the GLK premiere on the North American market, where sales are scheduled to begin in January 2009. "Our GLK is a character bursting with expressiveness, and a new model for us within a young market segment in the U.S.," comments Mercedes-Benz Head of Design Gorden Wagener. "We selected SEMA in Las Vegas as the backdrop for its first appearance in North America because we want to take advantage of the show's glamour and to underscore the highly individual character of the GLK. An SUV with an edge that is so refreshingly alternative, demands a somewhat alternative setting."

Good market prospects are being forecast for the compact GLK in the U.S. The visual appeal and functionality of its exterior design make the GLK a distinctive and versatile vehicle, as do its exceptional handling and excellent safety characteristics combined with superb comfort both on and off-road.

GLK-Class freely interpreted four times

Four fundamentally different rebuilds make one thing abundantly clear - the GLK-Class is one of the most multi-faceted SUV models ever, and one that retains its distinctive character, even in the face of somewhat unconventional modifications. With each respective tuner fantasy and the help of some exotic ingredients, the SUV has been turned into an exclusive specialist for the road, beach, city or rally stage. "We wanted to see what kinds of interpretations were inspired by our GLK and how they would further sharpen this very strong character. The tuners opted for completely differing approaches, demonstrating the potential of our GLK concept," continues Gorden Wagener.

Brabus Tunes the Mercedes-Benz GLK

Just when the world thought that the square box of style known as the Mercedes-Benz GLK couldn't get any cooler, tuner Brabus has gone and has its brutal way with the small SUV.

The styling changes are obvious, with a number of added aero components: modified front and rear bumpers, new Brabus rocker panels, and to top it all off a new rear spoiler. As for the wheels, a wide selection is available with sizes ranging from 17 to 21 inches.

The powerplants come in a two varieties, with the ECO PowerXtra D6 (III) for the GLK 320 CDI that churns out an additional 48 horsepower, and the BRABUS B7 power kit for the GLK 350 that delivers an added 15 horsepower versus the stock engine. Each selection also includes a stainless steel Brabus exhaust system, as well as a three-year or 100,000 kilometer (62,137 mile) warranty from the tuner.

Interior improvements are not skimped on, with additions of stainless steel scuff plates, a sport steering wheel, a multimedia system with integrated monitors and DVD-player, and various trim packages in either carbon or wood.

The Brabus GLK may end up being a car that people will either really love, or really hate. For those that think of the stock GLK as a thing of beauty, then a more exclusive version is eagerly waiting. For those that see it as a mongrel, then apologies. You can make up your mind with a look at our gallery above.

Mercedes-Benz ConceptFascination Brings the Party to Paris Motor Show

When Mercedes-Benz unveiled its ConceptFascination shooting break to the crowd at Paris, it immediately added another member to the strange cadre of concept cars whose planners feel compelled to equip with yacht-like interior features, and booze.

While we were well aware of what the M-B wagon would look like ahead of the show – getting early word from the company that some elements of the car could make an impression on the next E-Class – we were mildly baffled at the inclusion of champagne, cigars, and expensive wooden decking hiding in the business end of the concept car. It’s not that there’s anything particularly bad about using these kinds of touches to convey the “opulence” of a show car, but the boats ‘n booze angle is getting to be a little played. Designers take note.

Check out our full gallery of Mercedes-Benz ConceptFascination images above.

Ask It: 2009 Mercedes-Benz CL550 4Matic

In our last round of Ask It, we featured the newest addition to the American muscle coupe segment. This week, we feature one of Europe's entries into the big, luxury coupe category -- the Mercedes-Benz CL550.

New for 2009, the CL550 benefits from Mercedes-Benz's 4Matic all-wheel-drive system, as opposed to the standard rear-wheel drive of last year's CL. This is indeed one elegant car. We love that there isn't a traditional B-pillar and think the flowing lines of this car make it much more beautiful than the competing BMW 6-Series. However, our test car's as-tested price of $120,110 doesn't put it into everybody's price range, though we do enjoy the feeling of exclusivity while driving the CL.

Thus, we're offering up the CL550 as this week's Ask It contender, so leave a comment and ask us whatever it is that you're dying to know about the big Benz coupe. Be sure to stay tuned for our video response next week, too.

Editors' Roundtable: 2009 Mercedes-Benz C300 Sport

After spending some time with Mercedes’ hot-burning C63 AMG, we thought it apt to give the rest of the C-Class range a shot to see if the new Benz C can all-around top other premium sport sedans like the BMW 3-Series and Lexus IS. While we did enjoy our C300 Sport, we found the $45,000 as-tested price a little high, especially when a BMW 335i offers better performance for a more reasonable price. Still, much of the blame for the hefty price tag is down to heavy treading on the options list...

(Click through the post to read our editors’ full notes on the C300 Sport.)

Chris Paukert
Editor-In-Chief

Perhaps I’m still enduring a performance hangover from guns-blazing C63 AMG we had a while back, but despite having the same shape and basic genetic makeup, this (rightfully) feels like an altogether different vehicle—one that I wasn’t always in-tune with.

Mind you, it’s still terribly accomplished, with a well-resolved interior and an exterior shape that at once looks aggressive and premium. But with just 228 horses in its stable, this C300 doesn’t really warrant Benz’s “Sport” designation in my book, with what feels like a 0-60 miles-per-hour time in the mid-sevens and a default stability control intervention point that’s set to “early-and-often.”

As good as the seven-speed automatic is, I would definitely prefer a row-it-yourself gearbox to make the most of the power on offer. Of course, not everything issued from Europe needs to be a sport sedan, but given that this is fitted with the “Sport” package (aero bits, grille, seventeen-inch staggered width alloys, “sport suspension and braking system,” interior frosting), I would like a bit more driver engagement, both in terms of the throttle response and steering feel.

It’s worth saying at this point that I think Mercedes’ all-in-one Command user interface has really come into its own. I think I prefer this interface to any of the others currently available from the competition (that includes Infiniti, Audi, and BMW—although in fairness, I haven’t experienced the latest iDrive incarnation in the 2009 7-Series for myself). It’s quite intuitive in use, and the controller itself has a high-quality feel and action.

Uneventful acceleration aside, this C300 enjoys the sort of well-calibrated, rattle-free ride, firm seats, and sober interior (especially in this color palate) that recalls the “bank vault” Benzes of yore. Given the automaker’s very public battle with quality lately, that’s probably as good a message as any to start with.

Don’t get me wrong—I do think there’s a lot to like about this C300. But the loin-stirring C63 stole my heart, and this one only made it beat a smidge faster.

Reilly Brennan
General Manager

Now that the C-Class has an interior and exterior that matches or beats that of a BMW 3-Series and Lexus IS (don’t think so? Let me know in comments), you’re going to have to think long and hard about why you actually buy a car. If your monthly payments are always earmarked for driving machines, you’re likely not reading this review anyway. The fattest part of the entry luxury curve—those buyers who want a lot of show and maybe a little bit of go—will find another layer of confusion as they pick their next $35,000 sedan. The C300 is very good for those buyers who are shopping with a high priority on design, interior quality and curb appeal.

Having driven the C63 AMG a few weeks back, I was surprised to see a lot of what I loved about that car found in this “base” model C300 Sport. Of course, the 451-horsepower V-8, demon body kit and hip-hugging seats are gone (along with a host of other bits and pieces related to going and stopping in a most expeditious manner). But, you never feel like you’re in a stripped down model in the C300. It’s a Mercedes, after all. The large-face grille and Gehry-esque interior are all here. The brakes are surprisingly good. The power isn’t magical by any means, but for freeway merging and scooting around traffic it’s serviceable.

It’s common for people to beat up on the C-Class because it’s not a “sports sedan.” Let them complain all they want—from stem to stern there’s little evidence that the car was supposed to be a replacement choice for the manual-driving 3-Series buyer (C63 AMG would take umbrage with that, of course). For most buyers of the C-Class—who seek a true luxury car without the trappings of curb weight and overall length of a bigger sedan—there’s little reason to look elsewhere.

Oddly, one could argue that the new 3-Series has one of the most “sporting” design aesthetics in the segment, which belies its luxury panache. It’s a clever game. And we must admit—we all love a hologram.

Seyth Miersma
Senior Editor

The C300 is a fine car, balanced, adequately luxurious, and a great standard-bearer for Mercedes-Benz after a longish period of sliding public opinion about the automaker. The C-Class isn’t going to overwhelm anyone with its power or speed, though I’d be hard-pressed to say that I ever found myself needing any additional grunt, despite wanting it on a number of occasions. Thankfully the fine steering and composed chassis mostly made up for the lack of outright thrust in most cases. There is also a bit more room for passengers than can be found in BMW’s 3-Series, should that be a concern for buyers. Our example was optioned out to a rather immodest 45 grand or so, a figure for which we’d hope the car would feel just a little bit more special. Keep a clear head when furnishing your C-Class and you can walk away with something a bit more reasonable though.

Steven J. Ewing
Production and Test Fleet Manager

I really like the new C-Class. Though I wish that the base C300 had some more power, the way this car makes use of the minimal 228 horses is what's most impressive. The engine in no way feels inadequate, though I'm sure that true enthusiasts might shell out some extra money for a C350 Sport or even a top-dollar C63 AMG (meow!). The C-Class is one of the most attractive cars in this class -- especially in Sport guise -- and it makes me wish that the base BMW 3-Series would strut its stuff a little more.

In all, the C-Class is really good car, and its shortcomings in performance are easily made up for with its style and interior refinement. Then again, I must take into consideration the nearly $45,000 price tag of our test car. For that kind of money, I'll stick with a BMW 335i, what with its twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine. Still, for those who must have the Mercedes, the C300 is never a bad choice.

2009 MERCEDES-BENZ C300 SPORT

Engine: V-6, 3.0 liters, 24v
Output: 228 hp/221 lb-ft
Transmission: Seven-speed automatic
0-60 MPH: 7.1 seconds
Top Speed: 130 mph (limited)
Fuel Economy, city/hwy: 18/25 mpg

Price as Tested: $45,590

Report: Mercedes-Benz to Revise Naming System?

Recent reports indicate that Mercedes-Benz may be ready to change its naming system in the near future, with model designations that will actually spell out if the car is a coupe or a convertible. The CLK name will be the first to drop off the list, becoming the E-Class coupe or convertible in 2009. Other models will most likely follow suit, such as the CL which would be renamed as the S-Class Coupe.

With the current M-B nomenclature rather well-accepted within the car buying public as far as we know, the move towards a brand new system would seem to fly in the face of any equity the old names have built over the years. That said, the revised naming scheme isn't heading into bold new territory – a decade earlier, the old CLs were known as the S-coupe and before that, the SEC.

+ Benz Insider: Mercedes-Benz dropping the CLK and CL names

Editors' Roundtable: 2009 Mercedes-Benz R320 Bluetec Diesel

For 2009, Mercedes-Benz has outfitted all of its diesel vehicles with the latest in Bluetec technology. First pioneered in the E320, the ML-, GL-, and R-Class now get the cleanest version of Benz’s oil-burning 3.0-liter V-6. This engine is good for 210 horsepower and an extremely useful 398 pound-feet of torque. However, we were rather skeptical if this would be enough power to move the large R-Class family hauler with enough spirit to keep our enthusiast hearts beating. What we found was a rather pleasant people mover with ample power and a comfortable, luxurious interior perfect for long drives.

Click through the post to read all of our editors’ notes on the R320 Bluetec.

Chris Paukert
Editor-In-Chief

Walking up to our R-Class, I could almost here the advertisement’s breathless callout: “Are you iconoclast’s iconoclast? Have we got the car for you!” If there’s a less-mainstream car available on the U.S. market from a mainline automaker, I have yet to find it. Say “Mercedes” to your fellow American consumer, and they’ll probably conjure up images of a luxury sedan, a coupe, or perhaps an SUV, doubtlessly loaded-up with a good deal of power, a mess of leading-edge technological doodads, and more than a whiff of snob appeal. They don’t picture homely purple diesel minivans.

That’s something of a shame, because as far as these things go, this is a honey. If you can get past the ungainly front end and its wretched headlights (Q: Is it possible for a designer to be nearsighted and farsighted at the same time?), this is actually a very nice vehicle, and it’s a heck of a sleeper executive limo. There’s plenty of space inside (with borderline Maybachian levels of leg room available in the second row), lots of creature comforts, and a torque-drunk Bluetec diesel underhood. There are precious few better long-distance family vehicles out there.

A couple of niggles: Presumably to keep soccer moms from spilling their bowls of orange slices and coolers full of Gatorade when they unleash the V-6’s mountain of torque, Mercedes has calibrated the throttle pedal to have an annoyingly slow step-in. That is, there is what feels like a couple inches of pedal travel where almost nothing happens. Wait for it…wait for it… whomp! This I could do without. Get underway, however, and there’s passing power aplenty from the reasonably muted (but clearly diesel) engine hammering away from somewhere out there beneath the pointy and ugly.

Similarly, the fuel economy struck me as a bit disappointing. In my travels, the trip computer indicated I was averaging around 23-24 miles-per-gallon in moderately enthusiastic, largely around-town driving. That’s not a bad figure considering the size and scope of R-Class, but I still expected better.

On the whole, though, there was little to complain about. The R-Class is a unique and capable package that occupies a niche of one in America. The diesel engine’s refinement and power suits this vehicle well, and the driving experience is very car-like and friendly. Sadly, with America’s growing aversion to minivans and without the proper context of a showroom full of A- and B-Class models, Vitos, and so on, this Mercedes is unlikely to graduate into anything approaching a volume seller in the States.

Reilly Brennan
General Manager

You tell yourself time and time again to stop judging books by their covers, but the temptation is too great. We’ve just been trained for good reason, mostly to trust that sense of visual intuition we all possess. But, doing so can have grave consequences, like missing out on a really good car just because you think it has funny headlights.

That was the spot I put myself into with the Mercedes-Benz R-Class. Some three years after its debut I had never spent any time in one and just blindly assumed that it wouldn’t appeal to me.

Of course, I was dead wrong. The R-Class will never be a competitor for a hot wagon, so leave all your visions of RS6 Avant comparisons at the door. But, viewing the entire experience from a passenger-centric point of view, the R-Class is a winner. Check out these selfless qualities:

Gobs of leg room for your passengers: If I ever had to work from the road in a mobile office, I can’t think of a better way to travel than in the back seat of this thing. Not only is the legroom incredible, it’s a lot more comfortable than sitting in the back of a truck-based SUV.

Incredibly functional rear and third row access: the second row pops up and forward to allow for easy egress and aggress for the third row. This increased space makes for happier passengers.

Gadgetry: Double rear-seat independent LCD screen with remote and headphones.

From a driver’s point of view the R-Class excited a lot of us in the office because of its deliciously torque-friendly diesel engine. Some of the typical Mercedes complaints popped up, however, including steering feel that is perhaps a bit too light in our hands.

Steven J. Ewing
Production and Test Fleet Manager

Seeing as how this was my first experience with the Mercedes R-Class, I wasn’t sure what to expect right off the bat. I originally assumed that our R320 test car would drive like an overweight minivan with some added torque thrust from its diesel engine, and after spending a couple of nights with the R, my original thoughts weren’t too far off. However, what I didn’t expect was how much I really enjoyed driving this Bluetec Benz.

Initially, there isn’t a lot of power to quickly move you from a stop, but buyers of the R-Class are not looking for a performance vehicle, and if the are, they might want to scan their local M-B dealers for a leftover R63 AMG. The R320’s V-6 only produces 210 horsepower, though it is indeed made up for with the almost 400 pound-feet of torque that pushes you forward from very low revs in each gear. This is the same engine used in the E, ML, and GL Bluetecs, though it feels slightly underpowered—yet realistically adequate—in the R-Class. Highway passing only requires a slight nudge of the gas pedal and, if you’re so inclined to do so, the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters allow you to quickly blip down through the gears to make full use of the horsepower and torque combination.

In true Mercedes fashion, the interior is made up of high-quality leather and plastics that not only look good, but feel good, as well. If I were to be the rear-seat passenger on a cross-country drive, I’d want to be in an R-Class, what with its leather bucket seats in the second row, DVD players mounted to the back of the front seats, and sunshades that add an extra level of tinting to the side windows and the giant panoramic sunroof. This is really a luxurious ride. The third row isn’t quite as comfortable, but there’s still adequate legroom and headroom.

What it comes down to with the R-Class is price. Most middle-class moms will do just fine with a Honda Odyssey, but for those who need that extra step of luxury and style, the R-Class is a fantastic way to drive and be seen. The Bluetec engine offers an added note of fuel efficiency, too (though not altogether stunning at a quoted 18/24 miles per gallon). Still, for those who have to have the best, this R-Class is a winner.

Seyth Miersma
Senior Editor

The R-Class may be a bit of an odd duck and a rare sight—at least on the roads I frequent—but it remains a surprisingly enjoyable steer considering its sort of upper crust minivan pretensions. The Bluetec diesel seems to be a natural fit in this application, giving a healthy dose of shove to a weighty vehicle, and providing seamless speed and passing power on the freeway. I put roughly 600 miles on our R320 tester, driving to, back from, and all around the greater Chicago metro area, and found the friendly confines of the big Mercedes to be a fine respite from the drudgeries of the travel. I also managed to average (according to the trip computer) a little better than 27 miles per gallon in driving that was skewed about 80/20 highway to urban, not bad for a three-row vehicle.

Stopping by the folk’s place for a birthday I also had a chance to ask my kid-toting relatives what they thought of the MPV in terms of real world utility. Each mom interviewed said that it was almost too nice for kids, and wondered at how they’d get by with no sliding doors in back. Everyone also seemed of the same mind when it came to the looks of the low-slung hauler, saying that they were much more impressed with the job M-B did on the interior than the exterior. A hard point to argue.

Nate Luzod
Art Director

The R-Class is every bit as luxurious as you'd expect from a Mercedes-Benz. Perhaps even more so, on account of the utterly capacious interior that I feel we only see in the S-Class. The inside is the stuff you dream about on long road trips: perfectly accessible, usable, comfortable and oddly luxurious (odd, in that our typical perception of a minivan is anything but). The functionality of a crossover paired with the quality of a Benz isn't something we see much of, but it's something I wouldn't mind seeing more of. It's too bad luxury marques seem to have focused solely on SUVs for family needs rather than minivan-type things. Perhaps they wouldn't have gone so dramatically out of style had this not been the case.

The steering felt a bit heavy and on account of its Bluetec diesel the acceleration wasn't anything like awe-inspiring, but for a van I find this perfectly acceptable. I'd much rather have the endurance and MPGs of a proper diesel than a hot 0-60 time to scare my family with.

As far as crossovers go, I'm hard-pressed to find any fault in the R-Class. While the price tag may place it well out of reach for the average working family, the privileged few should absolutely consider it for a great family hauler.

2009 MERCEDES-BENZ R320 BLUETEC

Engine: Turbo-diesel V-6, 3.0 liters, 24v
Output: 210 hp/398 lb-ft
Transmission: Seven-speed automatic
Top Speed: 138 mph (est.)
Weight: 5092 lb
Fuel Economy, city/hwy: 18/24 mpg
