Mini Cooper S Recalled Due To Tailpipe Length

BMW of North America has issued a recall for 28,450 Mini Cooper S cars made in model years 2007 and 2008. Why? The tailpipes. Yep, the center exhaust on the Cooper S stick out too far past the rear bumper and may prove to be a threat to innocent pedestrians. If the tailpipe is hot and someone walks by, they could unknowingly burn themselves.

The whole thing seems a bit silly, but Cooper S owners will need to take their cars into their local Mini dealer to have the tailpipes replaced. The recall is set to begin in January of next year.

2008's Ten Most Fuel-Efficient Vehicles

If there was one positive factor about 2008's energy crisis, it's that it forced consumers to put more weight on fuel economy when making car-buying decisions. And while we may have moved away from $4-per-gallon gasoline, fuel efficiency still places high on the "must have" list for a lot of new car shoppers. Now that we know how easily these price hikes can happen, it's better to be safe than sorry, right?

We've seen major manufacturers expanding their ranges of hybrid offerings, and for the first time, clean diesels are starting to make their way onto American soil, proving that you don't have to sacrifice performance for the sake of fuel consumption. Scroll through the gallery above to see out list of the ten most fuel efficient cars for 2009.

Note: This information is based off of the 2009 FuelEconomy.gov listing.

Mini Cooper Convertible Breaks Cover Before Detroit Debut in January

It's taken Mini quite some time to release their updated Cooper Convertible. The hardtop's refresh happened in 2007, but the cabriolet was left behind. Sure, a special edition or two were made to hold people's interest, but now we have official details and images of the 2009 Cooper Convertible, set to debut in January at the North American International Auto Show.

Mechanically, there isn't a whole lot of difference between the cabriolet and the hardtop Coopers. The same 1.6-liter engines (in normally-aspirated and turbocharged forms) are used, producing 118 and 172 horsepower respectively. Pop-up roll bars replace the fixed units of the old car and the fold-down tailgate hinges have moved to the inside, cleaning up the rear end a bit. The roof mechanism can be operated at speeds up to twenty miles per hour and the roof takes just fifteen seconds to disappear. The top's sunroof feature can be used at speeds up to sixty miles per hour, too.

Pricing is set at $24,550 for the Cooper Convertible and $27,550 for the Cooper S Convertible. The new drop-top Mini will hit showrooms at the end of March 2009. Click through the post for the full press release.

THE NEW MINI CONVERTIBLE
11/28/2008

The new MINI Convertible.
Description in Brief.

* The next-generation model of the celebrated four-seat convertible which achieves some 164,000 in worldwide sales.
* MINI Cooper Convertible:
Four-cylinder gasoline engine with VALVETRONIC technology.
Capacity: 1,598 cc, max output: 118 hp at 6,000 rpm.
Max torque: 114 lb-ft at 4,250 rpm.
Acceleration (0–60 mph): 8.9 sec Manual, 10.2 Automatic, Top speed: 124 mph Manual, 119 mph Automatic.
Consistently Open:
The new MINI Convertible.

The driving pleasure and individual style that are MINI's signatures have been tapped to create the next-generation MINI Convertible. With its evolutionary design and increased functionality, specially tuned suspension, powerful, efficient engines and enhanced safety technology, the latest version of the four-seat convertible raises the bar.

New color choices and equipment features add up to endless options for personalization. The premium materials and finishes enhance the MINI Convertible – the only open-air car in its class – even further.

The new MINI Convertible will make its worldwide debut in January at the 2009 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Orders for the MINI Convertible are being taken now; the price for the MINI Cooper Convertible is $24,550 and for the MINI Cooper S Convertible $27,450, including the $650 destination and handling charge. Delivery of the first MINI Convertibles will begin on March 28, 2009.

The new MINI Convertible's durable soft-top with integrated sliding roof function reliably protects driver and passengers from the elements when it is up. Allowing for spontaneous open-air motoring, the soft top lowers automatically in 15 seconds flat, even when the car is in motion up to 20 mph. The unique Openometer next to the tachometer challenges the driver to log as many top-down miles as possible by recording the hours spent open-air motoring.

The new MINI Convertible offers outstanding versatility with its Easy-Load Function, folding rear-seat backrests, and generously-sized loading between the luggage and passenger compartments, which increases the car's cargo space to 23.10 cu ft.

This level of versatility, unparalleled in the convertible segment is enabled by the innovative design and construction of the rollover protection bar. The new MINI Convertible comes with a single-piece rollover protection bar behind the rear seats that spans the entire interior width of the car, without obstructing the driver's visibility, and moves into position automatically in the event of a potential rollover.

The new MINI Convertible will be available in two engine variants. The MINI Cooper Convertible will come equipped with a 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine featuring fully variable valve management for maximum output of 118 hp at 6,000 rpm. The performance-oriented MINI Cooper S Convertible will be powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with a Twin-Scroll turbocharger and direct gasoline injection delivering 172 hp at an engine speed of 5,500 rpm.

From the start, the MINI Cooper S Convertible and the MINI Cooper Convertible will be equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox featured as standard with optional six-speed automatic transmission. At the same time, the new MINI Convertible owes its nimble handling characteristics to suspension technology that has been significantly upgraded and improved over the former model. Its sophisticated wheel suspension, precise electromechanical power steering, powerful brake system and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) – all standard features – allow the MINI convertible to set a new standard for agility and safety.

All-Electric Mini E Priced at $850/Month

The all-electric Mini E is almost ready to begin its limited production run of 500 cars for California, though it seems buyers will have to pay a pretty penny for the Mini's one-year lease -- $850 per month. BMW officials say that because of the hand-built production and cutting-edge technology, this price won't fully cover the actual costs of the E's development.

On the upside, though, the Mini E has an expected range of 150 miles on a 2.5-hour charge, and we're told that this car won't be a total slug off the line. This will save in fuel costs, but still, when compared to a standard Mini Cooper's leasing price of about $350/month for two years, it might not seem all that worth it.

An electric Mini seems like a pretty hot ticket and this first-generation run of 500 models will be a good way for the engineers to note any malfunctions and potentially work out how to mass-produce the Mini E.

+ Motor Authority: Mini USA prices electric Mini Cooper lease at $850/month

Spy Shot: Mini Cooper S Convertible Uncovered

Mini-oriented spy shots have been coming in hot and heavy these days, with images of the Mini E mule getting some air time right before the official shots were outed, as well as exclusive first images of the production Mini Crossover. Parent BMW seems to be hitting its small car stride at just the right time, as interest in the already popular Mini brand seems to reach a new high each week.

Today our tireless shooters have caught out the 2009 iteration of the Mini Cooper S convertible with almost no disguise, save a few bars of black tape and one instance of the ever-popular, BMW paisley-swirl camouflage. The small patch of cover for the rear window likely hides the fact that Mini has done away with the previous convertible’s unsightly roll hoops, providing less conspicuous pop-up items for the new car.

The new Cooper S convertible will carry all the same engine options as the hardtop car after it makes its world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Motown this January.

Is there a Mini mania right now? Well, last week we first got you the Mini electric photos and then later on the exclusive photos of the new Mini Crossover. And this week we will start with some Mini photos as well, the Mini Cooper convertible.

These photos show a 2009 Cooper S convertible in almost showroom trim. There is just some smaller amount of tape around the rear lights, and small details. And the psychedelic tape on the rear window is just there to hide the fact that the ugly roll over bars know from the old model now are hidden and just pop up when needed.

Engine options are the same known from the Mini Cooper, meaning the line-up will include 95 hp 1.4 liter, 120 hp 1.6 liter and 175 hp turbocharged 1.6 liter gasoline engines and a 110 hp 1.6 liter turbo diesel engine. There will also be a JCW sport package version with a 208 hp strong 1.6 liter twin-scroll turbo engine.

Debut is likely to be in Januarys Detroit Auto Show.

Preview: BMW Debuts the Electric Mini E

Mini was proud to release information regarding its first zero emissions vehicle this weekend, the much anticipated, electrically powered Mini E.

Set to be released into private hands following the car’s formal introduction at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show, the first fleet of Mini Es will number just 500 in a limited initial production run. Parent BMW hopes to gain valuable experience through this rather extensive field test of the new EV, expecting that findings from the Mini E will make their way into future, mass-produced vehicles.

The EV Mini boasts rather impressive stats from its 150 kilowatt electric motor, as the unit makes a strong 204 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The strangely horsepower-heavy motor is able to propel the Mini from 0 to 62 miles per hour in just 8.5 seconds, and will travel something like 150 miles on a full charge of its lithium-ion battery pack.

The battery system is rather impressive in its own right, containing some 5088 cells grouped into 48 modules. Charging time has been a large focus of the Mini E project—Mini is handing out a high current charging station for the owner’s garage with each vehicle—with the batteries able to go from empty to a full charge in about two and a half hours. Additionally the new Mini’s engine acts as a brake whenever a driver takes his foot off the accelerator, meaning that roughly 75 percent of all deceleration can be handled by the engine in most city driving situations. That energy is also recouped by the batteries, providing a boost of up to 20 percent to the car’s range.

Read the full Mini E press release below or take a look at the car in the gallery up top.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - October 18, 2008... The BMW Group will be the world's first manufacturer of premium automobiles to deploy a fleet of some 500 all-electric vehicles for private use in daily traffic. The MINI E will be powered by a 150 kW (204 hp) electric motor fed by a high-performance rechargeable lithium-ion battery, transferring its power to the front wheels via a single-stage helical gearbox nearly without a sound and entirely free of emissions. Specially engineered for automobile use, the battery technology will have a range of more than 240 kilometers, or 150 miles. The MINI E will initially be made available to select private and corporate customers as part of a pilot project in the US states of California, New York and New Jersey. The possibility of offering the MINI E in Europe as well is currently being considered. The MINI E will give its world premiere at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19 and 20, 2008.

The MINI E's electric drive train produces a peak torque of 220 Newton meters, delivering seamless acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 152 km/h (95 mph). Featuring a suspension system tuned to match its weight distribution, the MINI E sports the brand's hallmark agility and outstanding handling.

By introducing the MINI E, the BMW Group is underscoring the resolve with which it works towards reducing energy consumption and emissions in road traffic. The BMW Group is drawing on its unique technological expertise in the field of drive systems to develop a vehicle concept enabling zero emissions without renouncing the joy of driving. Putting some 500 cars on the road under real daily traffic conditions will make it possible to gain widely applicable hands-on experience. Evaluating these findings will generate valuable know-how, which will be factored into the engineering of mass-produced vehicles.

The BMW Group aims to start series production of all-electric vehicles over the medium term as part of its Number ONE strategy. The development of innovative concepts for mobility in big-city conurbations within the scope of "project i" has a similar thrust, as its objective also includes making use of an all-electric power train.

The energy storage unit: cutting-edge lithium-ion technology engineered specifically for use in the MINI.

Based on the current MINI, the car will initially be available as a two-seater. The space taken up by back-seat passengers in the series model has been reserved for the lithium-ion battery. When in use in the zero-emissions MINI, the battery unit combines high output with ample storage capacity and a small footprint with power ratios that are unrivalled in this field of application so far. The lithium-ion storage unit will have a maximum capacity of 35 kilowatt hours (kWh) and transmit energy to the electric motor as direct current at a nominal 380 volts. The rechargeable battery is made up of 5,088 cells grouped into 48 modules. These modules are packaged into three battery elements that are compactly arranged inside the MINI E.

The energy storage unit's basic components are based on the technological principle that has proven itself in practice in power supplies for mobile phones and portable computers. The MINI E's lithium-ion battery can be plugged into all standard power outlets. Its charge time is strongly dependent on the voltage and amperage of the electricity flowing through the grid. In the USA, users can recharge a battery that has been completely drained within a very short period of time using a wallbox that will ship with every MINI E. The wallbox will be installed in the customer's garage, enable higher amperage, and thus provide for extremely short charging times. Wallboxes fully recharge batteries after a mere two-and-a-half hours.

Driven by electricity: reliably, affordably and free of emissions.

A full recharge draws a maximum of 28 kilowatt hours of electricity from the grid. Based on the car's range, a kilowatt hour translates into 5.4 miles. Besides the benefit of zero-emissions driving, the MINI E thus offers significant economic advantages over a vehicle powered by a conventional internal combustion engine as well.

The heavy-duty battery delivers its power to an electric motor, which transforms it into thrilling agility. Mounted transversely under the MINI E's bonnet, the drive train unleashes its full thrust from a dead standstill. This provides for the car's fascinating launch capability. The MINI E's intense driving experience is augmented by its dynamic deceleration potential, which is also directly coupled to the accelerator pedal. As soon as the driver releases the gas pedal, the electric motor acts as a generator. This results in braking force, and the power recovered from the kinetic energy is fed back to the battery. This interaction ensures extremely comfortable drives – especially at medium speed with constant, but marginal, variation. In city traffic, some 75 percent of all deceleration can be done without the brakes. Making substantial use of this energy recuperation feature extends the car's range by up to 20 percent.

Signature MINI agility in a new guise.

Weighing in at 1,465 kilograms (3.230 lbs), the MINI E has an even weight distribution. Minor modifications made to the suspension ensure safe handling at all times. The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system has been adapted to this model's specific wheel loads.

The MINI E's brake system comes with a newly developed electric underpressure pump. Its Electrical Power Assisted Steering (EPS) is the same as the one used in mass-produced MINIs. Both brake and steering assistance react to driving conditions and are thus extremely efficient. Even the air conditioning's electrical compressor only operates if desired or necessary.

Design: unmistakably MINI, undoubtedly new.

At first glance, the MINI E is obviously an iteration of the brand. But its design, which is the blueprint for the zero-emissions two-seater, has been complemented by a number of visual cues that point to its revolutionary drive concept. All of the units produced for the pilot project will have the same paintwork and bear a serial number on their front fenders.

The MINI E's coachwork sports an exclusive combination of metallic Dark Silver on all panels but the roof, which is clad in Pure Silver. What distinguishes the zero-emissions MINI is a specially designed logo in Interchange Yellow, depicting a stylized power plug in the shape of an "E" set against the silver backdrop. It has been applied to the roof, in smaller dimensions to the front and back, to the charger port lid, the dashboard trim, and – combined with the MINI logo – to the door jamb, in slightly modified form. The color of the roof edges, mirror housings, interior style cues and seat seams will match the logo's yellow tone as well.

Moreover, the central gauge and the battery level indicator behind the wheel of the MINI E, which replaces the MINI's rev counter, feature yellow lettering against a dark grey background. The battery level is displayed in percentage figures. The central gauge includes an LED display indicating power consumption in red and power recuperation in green.

MINI E customers will be part of a pioneering mission.

A 500-unit, limited-production MINI E series will be manufactured through the end of 2008. The project will thus attain an order of magnitude that clearly exceeds the size of currently comparable test series. Putting the MINI E on the road on a daily basis will be a pioneering feat to which both the drivers and engineers of the first zero-emissions MINI will contribute as a team.

MINI E customers will join forces with BMW Group experts to assist in the project's scientific evaluation. MINI E engineers accord high importance to staying in touch with the drivers on a regular basis, as this will help them analyze driver behavior besides vehicle characteristics in order to gain the most accurate and realistic picture of the demands placed on a vehicle with a purely electrical drive in the select usage areas.

Special charging station and full service for every MINI E.

The cars will change hands based on a one-year lease with an extension option. Monthly lease installments will cover any required technical service including all necessary maintenance and the replacement of wearing parts. At the end of the lease, all of the automobiles belonging to the project will be returned to the BMW Group's engineering fleet where they will be subjected to comparative tests.

The MINI E's lithium-ion battery can be charged using a wallbox provided to MINI customers. Only lockable garages or similar buildings will qualify as homebases and power stations for the MINI E.

Maintenance by qualified specialists.

The electric drive's high-voltage technology requires that maintenance work be done by qualified personnel using special tools that are not included in MINI service partners' standard toolboxes. In light of this, a service base will be set up on both coasts, staffed by service engineers that are specially trained to perform maintenance and repair work on the MINI E's electrical components. In the event of drive malfunction, these experts will provide professional support at the customer's local MINI dealer or the service base's specially equipped workshop. Technical inspections will take place after 3,000 miles (just under 5,000 kilometers) and at least after six months.

Production in Oxford and Munich.

The MINI E has already gone through the major phases of product development for mass-produced vehicles and passed numerous crash tests on the way. Aspects investigated besides passenger protection were the impact of collision forces on the lithium-ion battery and finding a non-hazardous location for it in the car. The MINI E's energy storage unit emerged completely unscathed from all of the crash tests mandated by US standards, which are especially high.

Production of the approximately 500 cars will take place at the company's Oxford and Munich sites and is scheduled for completion before the end of 2008. MINI's UK plant will be responsible for manufacturing the entire vehicle with the exception of the drive components and the lithium-ion battery, with the brand's series models rolling off its assembly lines concurrently. The units will then be transferred to a specially equipped manufacturing complex situated on BMW plant premises where the electric motor, battery units, performance electronics and transmission will be integrated.

Spy Shot: First Ever Look at the Production Mini Crossover!

It seems that Mini is wasting no time in getting its miniature 4x4 ready for the consumer market, with this first ever test mule being spotted just two weeks after the company debuted its Crossover concept at the Paris Motor Show. Crossover, Crossman, and Maxi are all names that have been ascribed to the Mini Ute so far, though the actual name of the car is still unknown.

We do know that the fourth Mini model will use some sort of all-wheel-drive system, will have four conventional doors, and will not make use of a Clubman style split tailgate door…no matter what it looks like in these photographs. Our spy shooter has it on good authority that those doors are just mockups, meant to slightly mislead, and that the real car will offer a more traditional lift back.

The scale of the car is a bit difficult to tell from this photo set, but we’re assured the Mini crossover is in fact quite a bit bigger than BMW’s current 1-Series. Have a look for yourself in the gallery above or read the photographer’s own notes below.

Mini Maxi??

The Mini Crossover concept was shown at the Paris Car Show earlier this month, but now we managed to snap the real car while out on its first steps out in the wild.

For this model you could say that the number four is important, it’s the fourth different body from Mini, it has four conventional doors, it has four-wheel drive and will have four seats. Engines will of course be both diesel and petrol, and yes, you guessed it, they will all be four cylinder.

The biggest visual changes to the concept are the conventional rear doors and the conventional trunk door, even if it’s camouflaged to look like its split like we know it from the Mini Clubman.

This Mini also looks really big compared to the BMW 1 series standing in front of it so if the people over at the marketing department choose to name this new baby Maxi, it’s ok.

Whatever name they choose, we will know that before 2010, that’s when this new Mini 4x4 is expected to be unveiled.

Spy Shot: Look Ma, No Tailpipe – All-Electric Mini Spied!

Engineers at BMW are busy cooking up an all-electric version of the effervescent Mini, a car that should help the automaker off-set its less conscientious offerings from the likes of the M motorsports division and Rolls-Royce. Such an EV will come in handy when trying make the grade for upcoming European Union CO2 standards, as well as regulations coming on the books for California in 2012.

The electric Mini may look very similar (re: almost exactly the same) as the current cars, but can be fairly easily distinguished by two things; the slightly misleading “HYBRID” sticker on the side, and the total absence of offal-spewing tailpipes.

Have a closer look at the super-green Mini in our gallery above or read the shooter’s words down below.

Mini goes electric…….

BMW and Mini are working on a full electric version of the Mini to help them lower the total CO2 emissions for the brand. With not so CO2 friendly brands as Rolls Royce and the M models in the portfolio all help is needed to fulfill the new EU standards as well as the new Californian regulations for manufacturers to offer zero emission vehicles by 2012.

Clear giveaway is the exhaust pipe, or should we say the lack of the exhaust pipe. And of course the Hybrid sticker, even if this is no hybrid but a full electric car.

Live Images of the Mini Crossover Concept from Paris

Mini offered up its Crossover Concept vehicle at last week’s media preview of the 2008 Paris Motor Show, showing off the first version of the car that will likely morph into a fourth model for the popular small car brand. We got down with the details of the car long before we flew to Paris (read that post here), but though it wise to take a minute to share some of the live images we brought back with us. Take a look above.

When you go to Mini's website and decide to build a vehicle, it says that there are over 10 million possible configurations. As if that weren't enough, the folks at Mini have teamed up with Original Wraps, a custom graphics manufacturer to allow consumers to personalize their carseven further.

Original Wraps uses professional-grade 3M vinyl to create all of their custom decals which can be outfitted on any Mini vehicle bought since 2002. The wraps are coated with a glossy, laminated finish, and custom cut for perfect fit to each Mini. Original Wraps even allows consumers to create their own designs. "Mini owners are already personalizing their vehicles in one way or another, but there hasn't been a reliable one-stop shop with unique designs, until now," says Tom Stemple, CEO and founder of Original Wraps. There are a wide variety of stickers, stripes, roof decals, and side decals to choose from, including some limited edition designs.

Each graphic costs anywhere between $9.99 and $349.99 ("Limited Edition" full-vehicle wraps are priced higher) and can be purchased at minimotoringgraphics.com or through any Mini dealer. Browse our gallery to see some of the Original Wraps designs and be sure to check out their website for more photos and information.

(Full press release below)

Customers can choose from vinyl graphics ranging from original art, national flags and thousands more. In addition, users can even upload their own photos and images, or download templates to create their own designs, with Original Wraps manufacturing the custom graphics. The wrap itself is made from a professional-grade 3M vinyl, which is printed via a proprietary process that ensures detailed and premium images. The wrap is then coated with a glossy, 3M laminated finish and custom cut, which allows for a perfect fit for each MINI.

Partnered with MINI, we have created a comprehensive MINI personalization portal that will get every MINI driver's imagination flowing," said Tom Stemple, Chief Executive Officer and founder of Original Wraps. "MINI Motoring Graphics allows MINI owners multiple ways to personalize their MINIs, including the ability to display their own pictures and artwork on the vehicle."

MINI Motoring Graphics are made with the highest quality 3M vinyl and come with a performance warranty. Some of the graphics can be applied by customers, but professional installers are recommended for many of the graphics. The graphics can easily be removed without damaging the surface of the vehicle. This allows customers the ability to personalize their MINIs as often as they choose at a low cost.

The cost of each graphic ranges from $9.99 to $349.00 and can be purchased at www.MINIMotoringGraphics.com or any local MINI dealer. The wraps can be shipped direct to the consumer or to a MINI dealer, and usually arrive within days.

Editors' Roundtable: 2008 Mini Cooper S

It’s hard not to love the Mini Cooper S, what with its cheeky design and pocket-rocket performance. Our staff applauds the Mini for being one of the most fun small cars on the market today that still yields fuel economy figures in the high 20s. Our test car’s as-tested price rang in at over $30,000, which is a bit much for a Cooper S, but if we could delete a few of the unnecessary lux options, we’re sure that we’d have a perfect balance of fun and function.

Click through the post to read our editors’ full impressions.

Chris Paukert
Editor-In-Chief

Every time I get into a Mini Cooper, I’m given an object lesson in how much fun small cars can truly be. Its steering is nicely weighted, the S variant has enough power, and I much prefer the standard-length Cooper to the Clubman, whose messy access, corrupted visuals, and added heft (with only a minimal gain in utility) utterly lose the plot for me.

Like most of my Winding Road/NextAutos crew, I could deal without the interior’s devil-may-care approach to ergonomics, however. Cute or no, the toggle switches for the side windows are mounted too low (and near to where one can accidentally trigger the seat heaters), the audio control locations are too convoluted for their own good, and unless you are Vern Troyer, I suspect you’ll never see the top third of the tachometer—the most important area.

Foibles aside, this remains a great small car that is truly more than the sum of its parts. If you’re in the market for one, plump for the added power and panache of the S model, but go lightly on the options sheet, or the finances will get out of control quickly. Looking forward to driving the John Cooper Works models.

Reilly Brennan
General Manager

I happen to miss the aural charms of the supercharger (this new Mini, of course, has a turbocharger instead), but the Cooper S’s power delivery is similar to that of the old car. The somewhat longer-than-you’d-expect shifter finds a gear, you dump the light-feeling clutch and hold on. The Cooper S just goes, flat and smooth, with the sort of steering confidence and ground hoovering that the brand has become so famous for. Truth be told, there’s somewhere approaching torque steer here, but not quite yet. What is the perfect amount of power in these small front-drive cars? It’s probably somewhere around this Mini’s 172 horsepower and somewhere south of the Honda Civic Si’s 197 horsepower. I can’t put my finger on it, but it’s in that range.

One of the interesting things about driving a Cooper (or a Clubman, I assume, but I haven’t been in one yet) is that you’re so far back from the windshield that it’s almost as if the car is wearing a baseball cap. This helps in a few ways: you rarely have to pull the sun visor down and it gives the interior the feeling of spaciousness you’ve likely heard about from Mini owners. But, on the other hand, you might find yourself leaning down at stoplights to see if the signals have changed.

I love this damn car.

Nate Luzod
Art Director

The Cooper S is one of those few cars where you remember that even the daily doldrums of long commutes can be incredibly fun. A Cooper has never failed me in this regard, and the S compounds that enjoyment. Although some of the Mini styling has been exaggerated in this generation (larger speedometer, more all-around-roundness), I don't mind any of it. I actually find the look to be a bit gimmicky and passé now—but the drive is so absolutely entertaining that when it comes down to it, I could care less what it looks like.

Steven J. Ewing
Production and Test Fleet Manager

I adore the Mini Cooper S. This has got to be one of the most perfect combinations of performance, style, and fuel economy. I put over 500 miles on this Cooper S during the six days that it was in my possession and never wanted to get out. I kept making excuses to go on longer drives and would eagerly tell friends, “No, I’ll come pick you up.” Contrary to what Reilly mentioned, I don’t really miss any of the old supercharger’s qualities. This turbocharged powerplant really gives this car good thrust around 2000 rpm and makes downshifting rather obsolete in most passing situations.

My favorite part about the Cooper S is how good it looks from every angle. The more time I spend with the new Cooper, the more I really start to notice how different it is from the last-generation model. I’ve really grown to appreciate the revised design. Regarding the interior, it’s typical Mini cuteness, but I really think that the large speedometer needs to go. It’s not very useful and takes up too much space on the dash. I’d prefer a cleaner, simpler dash arrangement—maybe giving more room for radio and HVAC controls that aren’t so finicky to use. (Why the volume control is a good six inches away from the radio controls is absolutely beyond me).

All in, though, I don’t think I could have this much fun in any other car that yields 28 miles per gallon. I just drove the Honda Civic Si and averaged MPGs in the mid-20s, and for me, this Cooper S is ten times more fun to drive. I’m sure that if I drove a bit more economically, I could have hit over 30 mpg. The one thing that concerns me, though, is that our test car’s as-tested price rings in over $30,000. You can get a Civic Si for seven grand less, and on my dime, that seems like a much better bargain. Still, being able to have this much fun with stellar fuel economy makes the Mini Cooper S a dead ringer for one of my top-five best cars currently on sale.

2008 MINI COOPER S

Engine: Turbocharged inline-4, 1.6 liters, 16v
Output: 172 hp/177 lb-ft
Transmission: Six-speed manual
0-60 MPH: 6.7 seconds
Top Speed: 139 mph
Fuel Economy, city/hwy: 26/34 mpg

Editors' Roundtable: 2008 Mini Cooper S Sidewalk Edition

Even though the 2008 Mini Cooper S Convertible is still based on the previous generation of the "new" Mini, there's still a lot of good things about the supercharged, droptop Cooper. Sure, the next iteration of the Mini convertible is right around the corner, but in the meantime, we sampled this special Sidewalk edition of the topless Cooper. Complete with a unique exterior color, a brown leather interior, and some really cool wheels, the Sidewalk Mini was indeed a pleasant car to have in our test fleet for our warm July weather.

Click through to read our full impressions of the Mini Cooper S Convertible.

Chris Paukert
Editor-In-Chief

A quick spin down to Detroit in this Sidewalk Edition reminded me of how good the “old” new Mini still is. The nippy handling is still there, and although I prefer having the manual shift knob in my hands, the paddleshifters on this car worked effectively and were seemingly more in keeping with the relaxed spirit of this topless convertible.

Driving with the top down reminded me of a couple of things that make Mini motoring unique: namely, that the stubby, upright windshield is a long way away, giving the car an inherently airy feeling. These days, with so many cars running around with severely raked windshields, the header can get claustrophobic even with the top-down, as they’re often 6-12 inches away from one’s forehead. Not so in this Cooper. One less flattering aspect about droptop Mini motoring is its disastrous visibility whether the top is up or down (the latter being thanks to those ungainly chrome roll hoops behind the rear seats).

For me, at $4k the Sidewalk package is a mixed bag. I think we all liked the unique wheel design and I enjoyed the leather choice, but I could do without the badges, sill plates, and so on. In short, I’d save my money and raid Mini’s leviathan options list instead, or do a bit of aftermarket tinkering.

Still, I’m looking forward to more good things out of the next Cooper convertible. It just seems like it’s taking a while...

Reilly Brennan
General Manager

It would be easy to assume that a 2008 Mini convertible is based off the new, second-generation Mini platform. I say it would be easy only to make myself feel better—it’s not, but I was surprised when I finally realized that it still rides on the old platform. In fact, few people realize that if you’re still hankerin’ for a supercharged Mini (the new model, of course, has a turbocharger on S models), the convertible is the only option short of the used vehicle market.

Mini has very few convertibles left on hand and from what we hear from Mini USA’s executive group they aren’t even building many more of them, as the next generation convertible will go on sale next spring. Given that, we have to credit Mini for making one more go of it with their dated droptop: the Sidewalk is a great package for those who want a little bit more visually. While most of the elements of the Sidewalk kit don’t really tickle my fancy, the wheels are really great. Can I buy these on the hardtop models as an option?

Nate Luzod
Art Director

Anytime we get a Mini in the fleet, my heart begins to beat a bit faster, my hands get shaky, and my mind wanders off into thoughts of how much fun the upcoming weekend might be. Throw a few S badges on it and chop the top and all that doubles. Throw in an automatic transmission, however, and we can forget all that.

Or so I thought.

I can't count how many Minis I've driven yet this is the first time I've tested the automatic - and it's actually very, very good. In plain vanilla mode, the car seems to know how it should be driven and acts accordingly. Spirited driving performance isn't dampened as severely as we might think, aside from the obviously bored left foot and right hand. For a happy middle ground, the wheel-mounted paddle-shifters work pleasantly well, with both sides featuring 'up' (pull with fingers) and 'down' (push with thumb), and shifts are as smooth as we could ask for.

Speed and handling were every bit as good as we can remember, but we can't wait until the convertible receives the design and performance upgrades that the coupe received last year. Hopefully, something will have been done about the poor visibility in the rear (top up and down). It's almost painful to have such a small, agile car that's capable of obnoxious driving maneuvers when you can't really see the traffic behind you. Here's to hoping.

All-in-all, the Cooper S convertible is a wonderful car. If I were buying my own, of course I'd opt for the manual. But if you live in a notoriously gridlocked city such as Los Angeles or Chicago, the automatic would make more sense and still deliver a very solid drive.

Seyth Miersma
News Writer

I was lucky to have mostly fine weather over the weekend and a day that the Mini Cooper S Convertible was in my charge, making as much use of the stylish little car’s top-down potential as I could. I have to say that I was almost immediately smitten with the cool five-spoke black alloys that are an integral part of the Sidewalk package, which managed to be charming without sinking to the small car kiss of death descriptor, “cute.”

The handling was on par with the standard Mini Cooper S hardtop, meaning we could drive the hell out of the little machine with nothing worse than some tire squeal around the fastest of (tight) corners. Too bad our tester came equipped with the optional paddle-shifting automatic in place of a proper six-speed manual though, as this driver’s car deserves a more involved transmission.

Steven J. Ewing
Production Assistant

This is the first time I’ve ever experienced an automatic transmission in a Mini, and while I’m not in favor of it compared to the six-speed manual, I wasn’t completely turned off. The six-speed autobox provided crisp shifts when the paddles were used, and I found the paddle setup to be rather pleasant during both my city and highway driving time. I’ve already put a lot of miles on the second-generation New Mini, so it was somewhat interesting to experience the old supercharged-four setup. I much prefer the turbo in the new Minis, as more power is available at a lower rpm, but the car is still a blast to drive.

Our test car’s special Sidewalk package won me over, too. I really like the brown/black interior and I’m really drawn to the black alloys. I agree with Reilly – I wish that these wheels could be spec’d on a 2008 Cooper or Clubman. It’s nice to be able to remove the roof in the always-fun-to-drive Mini, but the rearward visibility is really poor with the top down—a problem I would like to see addressed on the next-gen Mini cabrio.

And now there’s word of a droptop JCW Mini? Fantastic.

2008 MINI COOPER S CONVERTIBLE

Engine: Supercharged inline-4, 1.6 liters, 16v
Output: 168 hp/162 lb-ft
Transmission: Six-speed automatic
0-60 MPH: 7.0 seconds
Top Speed: 134 mph
Fuel Economy, city/hwy: 19/29 mpg

Base price: $25,400

Destination: $650
Price as tested: $32,800

Minis of the World Unite!

While it may look like the parking lot for some kind of international Super Friends meeting, there’s actually a much more pedestrian (though considerably more boring) explanation for this gaggle of Minis. BMW has prepared the set of eight cars for the upcoming G8 summit in Hokkaido, Japan. Each Mini carries the colors of a member nation, playing up on the flag bearing heritage of the cheeky small car.

We’re not sure how the decision was made to separate the supercharged countries from the plainer Cooper group, but we are sure the inclusion of both Germany and the U.K. in the high-po set was no accident. Just wait until the flagged out Corvettes get here…

Forbidden Fruit: 2008 Mini Cooper D

We at Winding Road and NextAutos are always eager to test the diesel offerings from global manufacturers and we were grinning with excitement when the folks at Bosch offered us the keys to a Mini Cooper with a 1.6-liter diesel engine. According to Bosch, this Mini will achieve fuel economy numbers in upwards of 50 miles per gallon, which will shame many hybrid offerings currently sold in the States. (Click through to read our full impressions of the Mini Cooper D.)

Chris Paukert
Editor-In-Chief

In this business, it’s commonplace for people to pull up to you in a nice car and ask questions like “How fast does it go?” and “What’s she got under the hood?” Well, the times, they are well and truly a-changin’.

I took our Mini D into a drive-thru, and noticed that while I was waiting in line that the older couple in an ’08 Ford Focus behind me were studying it quite closely (the Bosch diesel window headers give away the oil-burning game). As I pulled away from the second window with my food, the attendant shouted “Wait! Wait!!” and waved his arms excitedly. With the start-stop diesel having already fired and me being about a half a car-length away, I literally had to back up to the window, wondering if perhaps I had absentmindedly forgotten my change or perhaps they had shorted me my salad dressing. Nope. “The people behind you want to know how many MPGs your car gets!” the employee exclaimed. Not to sound snobbish, but I’m not altogether convinced that a year ago, the average American would have even known what MPGs are. This is a change for the better.

As for the Mini itself, it was quite enjoyable. There’s no mistaking the engine for anything other than a diesel (it’s not the quietest unit in the business), but it is torquey and provides ample power for those not expecting Cooper S levels of performance. This was the first time I experienced Mini’s stop-start technology on U.S. roads, and it proved itself to be up to the suburban grind. It’s essentially impossible to catch the system napping, as it restarts the engine at stops very quickly, but the engine will also seemingly randomly fire up while stationary, perhaps to run the accessories (I actually managed to get the engine to re-fire just by activating the turn signal or adjusting the HVAC, which feels odd). As it’s a diesel, there’s a slight but noticeable shudder when the engine shuts down, which is something I imagine takes a little getting used to. Overall, it’s a nice feature to have to save fuel, but it's nice to have a defeat switch as well.

To be clear, I’m all for more diesels in this country, and I can see many people opting for a car like this over a Toyota Prius or Honda Civic Hybrid for a lot of reasons: Superior handling, cheeky style, more upscale (if ergonomically messy) interior, ease of parking, and so on. But meeting tough U.S. emissions standards with a diesel isn’t cheap, and I suspect that it’s going to take a while before the cost component makes sense. Given the respectable mileage that a standard Mini gets, if diesel power is a premium of a few thousand dollars, I’m on the fence about whether enough people would opt for the oil-burner, at least at current gas prices. If they creep up a bit further, however, watch out.

Nate Luzod
Art Director

What a great weekend – Mini fun with MPGs to embarrass a Prius. Could life get any better? I drove much more than usual, reasonably fast, and used barely half a tank for three days worth of errands. Trips to IKEA, then returning months worth of recycling, then grocery shopping, then schlepping around extra junk from cleaning out my office – the Mini held so much more than we’d expect just by looking at it. But I digress, since that pertains to both gas and diesel. There was a noticeable lack of acceleration when trying to perform our typical Mini maneuvers, but the gurgling diesel sound kept us entertained nonetheless. Everything else works as we should expect, with solid steering and feel at speed, and confidence-inspiring all-around view that lets us fit in and out of places we probably shouldn’t.

As a clever fuel-saving technique the Cooper D cuts the engine automatically at stoplights. Throw it in neutral and take your foot off the clutch, and the Mini shuts down (radio and AC will continue) – almost mimicking a ‘controlled’ stall. To get going again, push the clutch in and it starts back up before your left foot hits the ground. It happens so quickly that there’s no noticeable delay– and as much as I enjoy the sputtering sound of diesel, it’s rather nice to have absolute silence at a standstill.

I don’t know that I’ve ever had as much fun in something so economical. I’d easily trade the dampened performance for the extra MPGs – it’s a no-brainer if we’re talking daily-driver. Too bad we can’t look forward to having these here in the states anytime soon.

Laura K. Cowan
Chief Copy Editor

Fuel economy in the forties without driving conservatively or using the start-stop feature is nothing to turn your nose up at. I was impressed that a vehicle so much larger inside than it looks and so fun to maneuver would be so economical. The Bosch decals on our tester drew quite a bit of attention from pedestrians and fellow drivers, so I wonder why the company didn’t add a “40+mpg” sticker to explain why diesel is so great. Some family friends thought the car was adorable but lost interest when they realized it was a diesel, saying, “Those of us who owned diesels in the Seventies and Eighties won’t be buying one.” I guess diesel still has a ways to go to prove itself to Americans. There was a slight lack of acceleration in our diesel Mini Cooper, but it was nothing I would trade for worse fuel economy. The car has enough power to do whatever you need, it just has an engine note that’s a little silly.

Steven J. Ewing
Production Assistant

I really, really like this car. The direct-injection 1.6-liter diesel is a perfect fit in the Mini Cooper and the power figures are more than adequate for a car this size. The base gas-engined Cooper is certainly no slug, but the extra torque boost from the diesel-engined Cooper proved to be really nice, especially during highway passing situations. I could easily leave the Mini in sixth gear and have plenty of power to zoom around eighteen-wheelers without having to push too hard into the throttle. Over the past week, I put around 2700 miles on a U.S.-spec Cooper S and though it was a ton of fun, I kept wishing for the diesel’s smoother powerband and generous fuel economy.

The interior is standard Mini fare all around. I must say, though, that the large speedometer is growing somewhat tiresome. This design scheme was a cute addition in the Mini’s first couple of years, but now I feel that the speedo’s large space requirements could be better merchandised. Better stereo controls and larger HVAC buttons would be nice. As is, I don’t like that the volume control is placed below the CD changer. During my time in this car, I reached for the knob in the middle of the radio unit and became increasingly frustrated when it would occur to me that I’d have to reach a bit lower for volume adjustment. If outfitted with the optional navigation system, the big speedometer is pretty much obsolete. I’d prefer a much cleaner dash arrangement overall.

All in, though, this car is a complete winner. If the United States can become better adapted to small diesel engines, I think that the Cooper D has a good chance of survival in this market.

2008 MINI COOPER D

Engine: Inline-4, 1.6 liters, 16v
Output: 108 hp/177 lb-ft
Transmission: Six-speed manual
0-62 MPH: 9.9 sec
Top Speed: 121 mph
Weight: 2601 lb
Fuel Economy, city/hwy: 50/67 mpg
(Based on European figures)

Production Stops at UK BMW Factory

Due to the Spanish fuel protests, workers at BMW's Mini factory in Oxfordshire, London, were forced to cease production this previous weekend. Truck drivers in Spain have been blockading major cities in protest over the diesel prices since June 9, last week. Although the staff is concerned that they will not receive pay for the days they are temporarily laid off, BMW has been working closely with unions.

The workers, all 4700 of them, produce approximately 700 Minis a day, in 3 shifts, 7 days a week.
According to management at the Cowley plant, crucial parts from any of the ports or airports cannot reach the plant.

"Unfortunately, due to the Spanish truckers' strike, we are having to suspend production over the weekend," said a spokeswoman for BMW. "The situation is beyond our control and the strike is affecting manufacturers across Europe, who are unable to get parts out of Spain as all ports and airports have been blocked."

Supposedly, production was scheduled to stop this coming weekend anyway for maintenance, but was moved to this last weekend because of the production stop.

New York 2008: Mini Geeks School Us on the John Cooper Works Price and We School Back

Cooper S owners who want the JCW kit retrofitted will get a bolt-on new performance exhaust, a higher-flow airbox attached to the engine intakes, plus the requisite 208-horse ECU electro-tweakery.

And for 2009? Despite breathless announcements by some of the same Mini geeks that they’ve heard that a GP-style kit is not in Mini’s plans, we happily can tell them that they are wrong. Our Mini source at New York assures us that something offering “230 or so

John Cooper Works Times Two: Mini Cooper S Clubman JCW

The Mini John Cooper Works and the Mini John Cooper Works Clubman will feature the 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine with Twin Scroll turbocharger and direct injection that delivers 207 horsepower and a maximum torque of 192 pound-feet.

The Mini John Cooper Works will accelerate to 0-62 mph in 6.5 seconds, while the Mini John Cooper Works Clubman will get there in 6.8 seconds. Both models are also fitted with standard motor racing technology: light alloy rims, light and extremely high-performance brakes, a new exhaust system and a modified six-speed manual transmission.

PRESS RELEASE:

Munich. A big name, a long tradition, outstanding performance, figures and an incomparable driving experience: the MINI John Cooper Works arouses motor racing passion which goes beyond the race track. In August 2008 the new model - produced at the British MINI plant in Oxford - will be coming to Germany along with the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. With their world premiere at the International Automobile Salon in Geneva (March 6th–16th 2008), these versions are the first two models to be launched by MINI under the brand MINI John Cooper Works.
The heart beating under the bonnet of each of the two new extreme
sports cars is that of a racer. The 1.6 litre 4-cylinder engine with Twin Scroll turbocharger and petrol direct injection delivers 155 kW/211 bhp (207 hp US) and develops its maximum torque of 260 Newton-metres (192 lb-ft US) between 1,850 and 5,600 rpm – by means of overboost the torque can actually be increased to 280 Nm. (207 lb-ft US). The power unit is based on the engine of the John Cooper Works CHALLENGE, which will see its premiere at the MINI CHALLENGE 2008. It accelerates the MINI John Cooper Works in 6.5 seconds from 0–100 km/h, the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman manages the spurt in just 0.3 seconds more.

It is not only the engines of the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman that provide genuine racing feeling. Both models are also fitted with extensive motor racing technology as standard: exclusive light alloy rims with especially light and extremely high-performance brakes, a new exhaust system and the modified 6-speed manual transmission, also created with close reference to the new racing car for the 2008 MINI CHALLENGE. Rarely before has motor racing expertise found its way so directly onto the road. The MINI John Cooper Works will be available in Germany at a price of 27,700 Euros, the price of the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman will be 29,500 Euros. (US Pricing yet to be announced)

Fascinating power due to motor racing expertise.
The MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman are driven by a true power package based on the current engine of the MINI Cooper S, extensively revised for the MINI John Cooper Works CHALLENGE racing vehicle and now back on the road with refreshed power. Even the basic design of the 1,598 cc 4-cylinder engine has details which are drawn from motor racing. The cylinder block and bearing housing are made of aluminium, the four valves per cylinder are controlled by two upper camshafts, friction-optimised cam followers and hydraulic valve clearance compensation elements. The outlet valves are filled with sodium so as to meet the increased cooling needs of a turbo engine. The camshafts of the 4-cylinder are composite. Instead of using the conventional die-cast procedure, the cam rings are made of high-strength steel and shrink-fitted to the actual shaft. The intake camshaft has a continuously variable phase adjustment function by means of which the valve control times can be adapted to the relevant performance requirements.

The engines for the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman are made at the BMW Group engine plant Hams Hall (Great Britain) where the engine units for all MINI model variations are manufactured. In the case of the top-of-the-range engine, there are a number of special modifications to the production process to do justice to the increased output and the resulting higher temperatures in the combustion chamber, thereby guaranteeing maximum reliability of the drive system. The engines are fitted with reinforced and specifically ground pistons as well as a cylinder head with optimised rigidity and modified gasketing. The intake valves and valve seat rings are also made of especially resilient material, and as compared to the engine of the MINI Cooper S there is a slight reduction of the compression.

More air, more power, more torque – the formula for increased driving pleasure.
The power increase as compared to the engine of the MINI Cooper S is mainly achieved by means of optimised air intake and outlet due to an adapted turbocharger. The air filter, air mass sensor, exhaust system and catalytic converter have been modified so as to achieve a power-enhancing dethrottling on the induction and exhaust side. This is also reflected in an engine sound which is peculiar to this model. Due to the adaptation of the exhaust system,
a significant reduction of counterpressure is achieved. The MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman fulfil the requirements for adherence to the particularly stringent threshold levels defined by the exhaust norms EU5 in Europe and ULEV II in the US.

The through-flow capacity of the clean air duct to the turbocharger has also been increased. The design of the Twin Scroll turbocharger enables an especially spontaneous power build-up. In the exhaust manifold and the turbocharger, the channels of two cylinders are separated in each case. The supercharger blades are set in optimum motion even at low engine speeds. A turbine was developed in very high-quality material especially for the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman, and the maximum boost pressure was increased from 0.9 to 1.3 bar overpressure.

The maximum torque of 260 Nm ( 192 lb-ft US) is available even at an engine speed of 1,850 rpm and up to a level of 5,600 rpm. During acceleration, torque is raised to 280 Nm (207 lb-ft US) by means of a brief increase in boost pressure between 2,000 and 5,300 rpm. This overboost function gives the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman an even more powerful response. The engine reaches its maximum output of 155 kW/211 bhp (207 hp US) at 6,000 rpm. The spontaneous response is also reflected in the car’s acceleration figures. The MINI John Cooper Works takes 6.5 seconds to accelerate from 0–100 km/h, the time required by the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman is 6.8 seconds. Both have a maximum speed of 238 km/h.

Petrol direct injection: fuel is precisely measured and efficiently used.
With a specific output of 132 bhp per litre of capacity, the MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman advance into the realm of
the purebred sports car. What is more, both new models have the characteristic MINI quality of offering unique driving fun in combination with exemplary efficiency. The key function here is the fuel supply system. The turbo 4-cylinder is fitted with petrol direction injection according to the common rail principle. Injection valves positioned laterally in the cylinder head feed the fuel in precise doses under a pressure of 120 bar from the tank directly into the combustion chamber. This means that in every situation on the road, precise fuel supply is guaranteed which is adapted to the given load requirements. The average
fuel consumption in the EU test cycle is at an unusually low level for vehicles of this output category. The MINI John Cooper Works makes do with 6.9 litres
per 100 kilometres, the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman requires 7.0 litres. The respective CO2 figures are 165 and 167 grams per kilometre.

Conceived for maximum driving fun: chassis, brakes, assistance systems.
The standard range of features of the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman not only includes a particularly high-performance engine but also a wide range of other components which ensure that this irrepressible power is put safely onto the road. As is characteristic
of MINI, the engine powers the front wheels. The MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman are fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission whose components have been adapted to the very high level of torque of this new top-level engine. In addition to the sophisticated chassis technology with McPherson struts at the front axle and the central control arm
rear axle, which is itself unique in the small car segment, the electromechanical EPAS (Electrical Power Assisted Steering) is a further guarantee of reliable
and precise handling. The electrical servomotor also contributes to efficiency in that it is only activated when steering support is required or desired by
the driver.

The steering system EPAS allows various settings to be programmed. The basic set-up guarantees balanced steering support depending on road speed. With the sports button, which is positioned as standard next to the gearshift lever in the centre console in the MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman, it is possible to activate a perceptibly more dynamic characteristic curve with higher steering torque and increased steering precision. In keeping with this, pressing the sports button also changes the accelerator pedal to a much sportier characteristic setting.

The MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman are fitted with sporty suspension settings as standard. As an alternative, a sports chassis with harder damper characteristics and stronger stabilisers is available for the front and rear axle. For a more extreme racing orientation, there is also a John Cooper Works chassis available in the accessory range for the MINI John Cooper Works. It includes a lowering of the suspension by 10 millimetres, even harder damper characteristics and stabilisers with a diameter which is larger than those of the sports chassis.

The standard sports brake system guarantees short braking distances and is characterised by precise response and fine controllability. The fixed calliper
disc brakes with aluminium callipers finished in red – inner vented on the front wheels and bearing the John Cooper Works emblem on the callipers – are large in their dimensions. The type and function of the brake system is based on those in the MINI CHALLENGE racing vehicle. The same applies to the exclusive 17-inch light alloy wheels in John Cooper Works Cross Spoke CHALLENGE design. Weighing less than 10 kilos, they are the lightest standard wheels within the competitive environment of the MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. The high-speed tyres in 205/45 W 17 format have runflat properties, and both models are equipped with a tyre damage display function.

As standard and unique in front-wheel-drive vehicles: DSC with DTC.
In addition to sporty suspension settings and powerful brakes, the MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman also have sophisticated driving stability systems. Their standard equipment includes ABS, EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution), CBC (Cornering Brake Control)
and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) including hill-start assistance and DTC (Dynamic Traction Control). By applying the brakes to individual wheels and reducing engine power, DSC applies a stabilising effect when required, intervening early on to prevent the vehicle from swerving at the front or
rear wheels in especially dynamic driving situations or on slippery surfaces. The brake assistance function, likewise an element of DSC, detects
emergency braking situations and ensures instant build-up of maximum brake pressure should the need arise.

DTC is a sub-function of DSC which is available here for the first time in a vehicle with front wheel drive. It enables the response threshold levels
of driving stability regulation to be increased so as to allow controllable slip on the drive wheels. In this way, the models MINI John Cooper Works
and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman can be controlled on snow-covered surfaces or loose sand with slightly spinning front wheels, or taken more intensively to the physical limits in highly dynamic driving situations. When
the threshold range is reached, the stabilising intervention of DSC is also guaranteed in DTC mode. If necessary, DSC can be entirely deactivated.

What is more, in DSC-Off mode an electronically controlled lock function for the differential of the drive axle is activated. This system is also a standard feature and known as Electronic Differential Lock Control: it supports an ambitious, sporty driving style when accelerating out of bends and hairpins, for example. The electronically controlled lock function has the effect of applying specific, appropriate brake force to a spinning drive wheel on tight bends.
This enhances the forward propulsion of the vehicle without having a negative impact on self-steering response. The bend can thus be taken more smoothly but also more swiftly.

Interior:
sports car ambience and a wide range of individualisation options.
In the interior, the standard fittings of the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman boast a strikingly impressive elegance which is both simple and sporty in style. A three-spoke steering wheel in leather is the point of connection between the driver and his sports machine, while the anthracite roof liner and the interior surfaces in a glossy Piano Black finish create a calm atmosphere which promotes concentration on the road. Another feature of the two top-of-the-range sports cars is a speedometer scale which goes up to 260 km/h.

In addition, MINI also offers a wide range of individualisation options for configuring the two new extreme sports cars. In terms of exterior paint finishes, interior design, seat upholstery types, interior colours and decor options
as well as the comfort features, the full breadth of variety is available as for the other model variations. Additional comfort, versatility and sporty flair can be achieved with items from the extensive accessory range of MINI and of
John Cooper Works.

Ten exterior paint finishes are available to choose from for the MINI John Cooper Works and the MINI John Cooper Works Clubman. Contrasting roof finishes and roof decor options provide a wide range of possible combinations. The basic fittings of the interior include seat covers in the fabric Chequered. Optional extras include leather upholsteries, sports seats with fabric/leather covers, sports leather seats and Recaro sports seats from the John Cooper Works accessory program. The decor strips of the interior can be selected in Fluid Silver as an alternative to Piano Black. The accessory program also includes an interior strip in Carbon.

The high-quality entertainment and navigation systems of the MINI equipment range are also available for the two top-of-the-range sports cars. The
controls of the audio system – with CD player as standard – and the 6 ½ inch TFT colour display of the optional navigation system are situated in the central circular instrument. The standard AUX socket enables music saved on
an MP3 player to be played through the audio system, for example. A special interface for full integration of an Apple iPod is also available as an accessory. For optimum and safe communication on the road there is an optional mobile phone preparation or integrated hands-free facility with Bluetooth interface
and USB connection. An interface for integrated operation of the audio and telephone functions is also specially available for the Apple iPhone.

Performance at premium level: John Cooper Works accessories.
The highlights of the John Cooper Works accessory program include the aerodynamics package and sports chassis with springs finished in red for the MINI John Cooper Works, as well as perforated brake discs and rear spoilers
for both model versions. Other items include a suspension cross-brace for the engine compartment, mirror caps in carbon finish and so-called side scuttles – direction indicator surrounds with a sporty grid structure. To match this there are also decor strips, handbrake handles and sports gearshift levers in carbon decor which provide an even sportier ambience. The gear shift indicator in the John Cooper Works accessory program also contributes to an intensive driving experience.

With the John Cooper Works Performance components, the character of the two new models is given even greater emphasis and visually highlighted, too. Premium-quality sporty flair characterises them as it does the two
new models themselves, both of which bear the John Cooper Works logo.

The MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman
have to be able to meet both the extreme challenges of the race track as well as the extensive requirements of everyday traffic in terms of functionality, design, reliability and durability. Together, the brands MINI and John Cooper Works stand for a promise of quality which is uniquely powerful within the competitive environment of MINI.

MINI and John Cooper Works: shared roots in motor racing. The two top sports cars are sold through the MINI dealer network. Like all variations of the MINI and MINI Clubman, both models are manufactured at the MINI plant in Oxford according to customer wishes. In this way, the integration of the John Cooper Works label under the umbrella MINI is now also reflected in the range of vehicles available ex works.

The close connection between MINI and John Cooper Works, based on a motor racing tradition stretching back decades, has a defining influence on the development of new vehicles and components. The MINI John Cooper Works and MINI John Cooper Works Clubman represent the shared values of driving fun, premium quality and individuality in an especially concentrated form. In terms of reliability, quality of workmanship and authenticity of design, they fulfil the high standards of the BMW Group, as do the John Cooper Works Performance components with their perfect adaptation to MINI. The new models are thus also subject to the warranty conditions applicable to MINI.
