The 2010 Detroit Auto Show is only a few months away, and as manufacturers work on rolling out their latest and greatest models to dealer lots, a select group of automotive journalists are working hard to decide what vehicles the 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards should go to. Report: Audi Pulls The Plug On The R8 V-12 TDI

We've had news left and right of mildly interesting cars being killed off due to the financial state of the global automotive marketplace. But now here's one that hurts -- reports are now showing that Audi will be canning its plans to bring forth a production version of the R8 V-12 TDI, or TDI Le Mans.

Originally unveiled at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, the R8 V-12 TDI Concept featured a 5.5-liter turbo-diesel V-12 -- a complete monster, what with its 500 horsepower and 740 pound-feet of torque output numbers. But as you can imagine, it's not cheap to engineer or produce something to this caliber, and Audi thinks that its money is better spent on more sensible projects.

No official word has been given from Audi on this matter, but we're crossing our fingers in hopes that this V-12 oil-burner isn't headed for an early grave.

Video: Getting Squeaky Clean In The 2009 Mini Cooper Convertible

When Mini unveiled their latest Cooper Convertible at this year's Detroit Auto Show, they explained that they want consumers to drive with the top down as much as possible -- after all, that's the point of a convertible, and a rule we at NextAutos live by as much as humanly possible.

To promote this idea, Mini sent a group of guys through a car wash in the latest drop-top Cooper, and (you guessed it) told them to keep the roof off at all times. Check out the self-explanatory video to see the whole thing go down.

Lincoln Announces Pricing For 2010 MKT Crossover

Ford pulled the wraps off of the new Lincoln MKT crossover this week at the Detroit Auto Show, and now that funky looking Flex-based vehicle has a price tag.

The base MKT with front-wheel drive and the 3.7-liter, 268-horsepower V-6 will start at $44,995, with all-wheel drive available. On the higher end of things, the MKT with AWD and EcoBoost will command $49,995, which makes it competitively priced with vehicles like the Acura MDX. Keep in mind, the EcoBoost V-6 will be capable of producing 355 horsepower but will offer roughly the same fuel economy as the base V-6 engine. For an additional $5000, customers can opt for the MKT's Elite Package, boasting adaptive cruise control, collision warning with brake support, cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, voice-activated navigation, and a power panoramic sunroof.

In addition to a front-wheel drive powertrain, the Lincoln MKT will also be offered with all-wheel-drive. The AWD model with the normally-aspirated, 3.7-liter engine is expected to carry a starting price of $46,990 when it arrives in dealerships this summer. Compared to a similarly priced Acura MDX (the segment leading in sales volume), the Lincoln MKT offers far more interior space, better highway fuel economy and features consumers want, such as adjustable pedals, rain-sensing wipers, auto high beams and the connectivity of SYNC.

The 2010 Lincoln MKT will be available with a premium, 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost powertrain as well, and all EcoBoost models will be fitted with AWD. The direct-injection, twin-turbo, 355 horsepower engine is expected to deliver not only best-in-class power but also best-in-class highway fuel economy, superior to both the Acura MDX and Audi Q7. The 355-hp Lincoln MKT will have a starting price of $49,995. Acura does not offer a premium engine upgrade in the three-row MDX.

Lincoln MKT buyers looking for more luxury and convenience features can choose the Elite Package, priced at $5000. The Elite package includes:

* Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): A system that allows the driver to set and maintain vehicle speed, while radar monitors traffic ahead. This optional system automatically adjusts speed and slows the vehicle to maintain the set distance behind traffic ahead.
* Collision Warning with Brake Support: A system enabled by Adaptive Cruise Control that provides the driver with a “head-up” display that flashes on the windshield when the system senses slower moving traffic ahead. If the driver doesn’t respond, the system will pre-charge the brakes to prepare the vehicle for a more aggressive stop.
* Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™): BLIS is a radar sensor on the outboard rear quarter panel used to monitor the traditional blind spot areas and can notify the driver with a warning indicator light in the corresponding side view mirror.
* Cross Traffic Alert: Utilizing BLIS sensors, the Lincoln Cross Traffic Alert helps detect approaching traffic when backing out of a parking space. When the vehicle is in reverse and senses traffic, mirror warning lights illuminate and audible signals sound.
* Voice-activated Navigation: An advanced, next-generation system with an internal hard-drive for map and point-of-interest information storage and an updated THX audio system with exclusive new feature – Neural Surround – that helps improve audio reproduction from compressed digital formats.
* Power-opening Panoramic Vista Roof

Stand-alone options available on the 2010 Lincoln MKT include:

* Active-Park Assist: Available on EcoBoost-equipped vehicles, this Lincoln-exclusive system literally “steers” the Lincoln MKT into a parallel parking spot while coaching the driver through conventional throttle and braking inputs.
Active-Park Assist employs an ultrasonic-based sensing system, as opposed to video camera-reliant competitive offerings, to detect edges of adjacent objects to calculate optimized trajectory and making hands-free parallel parking a breeze. It works at the touch of a button, requiring less driver programming and reducing the risk of selecting an inappropriately sized parking space.
* 20-inch polished wheels
* Dual, headrest mounted DVD family entertainment system
* Second-row, heated-and-cooled bucket seats with power lumbar
* Second-row, console-mounted refrigerator
* Class III trailer-towing capability

A full-equipped, twin turbo 355-horspower Lincoln MKT is expected to cost approximately $55,000, placing it thousands less than a comparably equipped Audi Q7. In addition, the Lincoln offers better fuel economy, more interior space and class and exclusive features like Active-Park Assist not available on the Audi Q7.

Video: Volkswagen Shows Off the BlueSport Concept

Volkswagen unveiled its new BlueSport diesel roadster concept at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this week, and while we had dozens of still photos, VW has released an accompanying video to show the little sportster in action. While there's still no word if the BlueSport will ever see the light of day, we can only hope that Volkswagen will move forward with its plans to bring some sort of oil-burnig roadster to life, and this video gives us all the moor reason to get excited.

No, the Subaru Legacy Concept isn't the sexiest thing to come out of the Japanese automaker's design studio, but it is certainly a step in the right direction. We wouldn't mind if the next-generation Legacy looked a bit like this show car, but only time will tell what Subaru's plans for the mid-size Legacy are.

In the meantime, Subaru has released this video of the Legacy Concept from nearly every angle, so Subie fan boys, rejoice! Two minutes of Legacy hotness has arrived.

Detroit 2009: Mercedes-Benz BlueZERO Lookin' Cute On The Show Floor

While Mercedes-Benz didn't have an official press conference during the show, their latest little BlueZERO concept did make its way onto the show floor. The cute little Benz uses a unique sandwich-floor architecture which Mercedes-Benz had originally introduced for the A-Class and B-Class nearly ten years ago. The BlueZERO is Mercedes' entry into the small, electric concept car segment, showing that they have all of the necessary equipment to create vehicles like these.

Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZERO

Stuttgart – Mercedes-Benz is showing the way ahead in environmentally responsible electromobility by presenting its near-series Concept BlueZERO at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Based on a single vehicle architecture, this intelligent, modular concept allows three models with different drive configurations, all of which are able to meet customer requirements in terms of sustainable mobility:

    * the BlueZERO E-CELL with battery-electric drive and a range of up to 200 kilometres using electric drive alone
    * the BlueZERO F-CELL (fuel cell) with a range of well over 400 kilometres using electric drive
    * the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS with electric drive and additional internal combustion engine as power generator (range extender). This version has an overall range of up to 600 kilometres and can cover a distance of up to 100 kilometres using electric drive alone.

The three BlueZERO variants are based on the unique sandwich-floor architecture which Mercedes-Benz introduced some ten years ago, initially for the A-Class and then for the B-Class, one of the aims being to integrate alternative drive systems. Advantages of the modified construction include the positive effect of the major drive components on the centre of gravity, their space-saving design and the fact that they are extremely well protected within the vehicle underbody. The five-seater BlueZERO concept cars also set standards in terms of lightweight design, interior layout and body form.

"The flexible BlueZERO concept allows electromobility for every requirement and highlights the fact that Mercedes-Benz is the world's only car manufacturer to already have in place all the key technologies for electric cars offering full everyday practicality", says Dr Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars.

The BlueZERO principle: flexible design, compact exterior, generously sized interior

All three BlueZERO variants share the same key technical components, while the design and vehicle dimensions are identical. Measuring just 4.22 metres in length, the BlueZERO models combine compact exterior dimensions with a generously proportioned and variable interior and luggage compartment. Five fully-fledged seats, a payload of around 450 kilograms and a luggage compartment capacity of over 500 litres make for outstanding everyday practicality. Thanks to their sandwich construction with a raised sitting position, the cars also offer an exceptionally high level of crash safety for the passengers and the technology, not to mention excellent all-round visibility.

Compared to electric cars based on conventional vehicle platforms and originally only designed for use in combination with internal combustion engines, Concept BlueZERO offers the following conclusive advantages:

    * Interior space is retained in full. As the energy accumulators/generators are integrated into the spacious sandwich floor, no compromises are necessary when it comes to passenger space, luggage capacity or variability.
    * The powertrain technology built into the sandwich floor ensures a low centre of gravity and, consequently, extremely reliable and agile handling.
    * Crash safety is of the extremely high standard associated with Mercedes thanks to the sandwich concept and the housing of major powertrain components between the axles.

As a result, the BlueZERO models are very different to conventionally constructed electric cars, which have the heavy and voluminous storage battery housed in the boot or in the rear-seat area, for example.

Modular design ensures flexibility and efficiency

"Our modular system allows different drive configurations for every customer requirement", says Dr Thomas Weber, the member of the Daimler AG Board of Management responsible for corporate research and development at Mercedes-Benz Cars. "The modified sandwich-floor platform provides the perfect basis for a wide model range with electric drive systems. We are also developing a new, additional platform for future compact models with power units based on optimised internal combustion engines. The intelligent networking of both architectures enables us to develop our product portfolio extremely flexibly and efficiently. From 2009, we will be producing the first Mercedes fuel-cell cars on a small scale. Small-scale production of Mercedes-Benz cars with battery-electric drive alone will then commence in 2010. This means we are extremely well equipped for the future."

All three BlueZERO models feature front-wheel drive, which is typical for this class of car. The Mercedes engineers have put together a modular system comprising several flexibly combinable drive components. These include state-of-the-art liquid-cooled lithium-ion batteries with a storage capacity of up to 35 kWh and the compact electric motor with a maximum output of 100 kW (continuous output 70 kW), which develops a peak torque of 320 Nm. All three variants accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 11 seconds. Their top speed is electronically limited to 150 km/h in the interests of optimal range and energy efficiency.

Electric drive systems with a range of 100, 200 and well over 400 kilometres

With a charging capacity of 15 kW, the powerful lithium-ion batteries in the BlueZERO E-CELL and the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS can store enough energy for a range of 50 kilometres within 30 minutes. In terms of purely electrical drive, one or two hours of charging time is needed for a range of 100 and 200 kilometres respectively. The charging times are doubled if the charging capacity is 7 kW, as would be the case in a normal household. Both of these BlueZERO vehicles incorporate an electronic control unit that supports intelligent charging stations and billing systems.

At the rear, the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS has the same 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine as the smart fortwo as an additional range extender. This compact three-cylinder powerplant has an output of 50 kW at a constant 3500 rpm. If required, it can recharge the 17.5-kWh lithium-ion battery by means of a similarly rated alternator. A range of up to 600 kilometres is possible on a single tank. The purely electrical, locally emission-free range is up to 100 kilometres. The BlueZERO F-CELL with fuel-cell drive achieves a range of well over 400 kilometres with zero emissions (as per NEDC).

BlueZERO design: both elegant and functional

Leading-edge technology is uniformly and attractively packaged in all three BlueZERO variants. The unique and distinctive Mercedes design idiom displayed by the body highlights the progressive nature of Concept BlueZERO straight away.

The powerfully elegant front end is dominated by the radiator grille with its centrally located star. The excellent aerodynamics of the BlueZERO are partly due to the closed front apron, whose design means that cooling air intakes are not required. The 20-inch wheels have also been aerodynamically optimised, while low-friction tyres reduce rolling resistance.

The striking character lines along the flanks lend the BlueZERO an extremely dynamic side line and accentuate its bionic structure inspired by nature. This characteristic feature of the Mercedes-Benz bionic car was adapted and modified for the BlueZERO models. These elements lend the body its dramatic power.

New-quality light production

The compact rear end of the Concept BlueZERO is characterised by tail lights in the shape of a curved "L". In addition, the Mercedes designers have achieved a new-quality light production: transparent lenses produce a red light curtain which tapers smoothly towards the sides, creating a lightly diffused effect. This effect is repeated, albeit in white this time, by the front headlamps. What's more, the front lights feature new lens technology and a plexiglas edge to produce "C" shaped daytime driving lights with the help of state-of-the-art LED technology.

Intelligent technology made visible

Translucent surfaces make the normally concealed technology visible. The light-grey tailgate is made completely from lightweight but highly robust Lexan that allows a view of the aluminium structure that makes up the rigidifying frame, for example. At the same time this transparent tailgate provides a view of the vehicle interior, making the advantages of the sandwich-floor platform obvious at a glance: for maximum customer benefit, the luggage compartment and passenger area remain fully usable, since there are no technical components that need to be accommodated here.

"It was very important for us to ensure that the guiding Mercedes-Benz principle of 'Fascination and Responsibility' was clearly reflected in the design of the Concept BlueZERO", says Mercedes-Benz design chief Gorden Wagener. "This is yet another clear statement that environmental awareness and driving pleasure will continue to go together in our vehicles in the future. We want people to realise at first sight that the Concept BlueZERO is definitively not a lesser option."

The Mercedes-Benz designers have emphasised this aspiration by introducing paint finishes in three new ALU-BEAM colours. Each of the three variants makes its individual mark: the BlueZERO E-CELL is painted in a fresh lime green, while the BlueZERO F-CELL has mint green paintwork. Confidence-oozing orange was chosen for the BlueZERO E-CELL PLUS.

Detroit 2009: Fisker Uncovers Karma S Concept

This afternoon, Fisker, the maker of the Karma plug-in hybrid, dropped
the veil, then dropped the top, on its new concept hardtop convertible,
the Karma S, also known as the Sunset. The Sunset features a
Fisker-exclusive lithium-ion battery, two electric motors, a sleek body
style, and a plush interior.

Although the Karma-S concept greatly resembles the production model
Karma, the crowd seemed pleased at the unveiling, but the champagne and
chocolate-covered strawberries may have had a hand in that.

FISKER UNVEILS KARMA S PLUG-IN HYBRID HARDTOP

Detroit 2009: Lincoln C Concept At Home On The Show Floor

There are still a couple of arguments going on within the NextAutos staff as to whether or not the Lincoln C Concept gets thumbs up or thumbs down, but in any case, this new compact car from the Ford Motor Company will surely shake things up a bit if put into production. And even if the concept never does see the light of day, we're hoping that Ford uses that 1.6-liter EcoBoost four in other vehicle applications.

Detroit 2009: BMW's New Z4 In The Flesh

The BMW Z4 has undergone a major overhaul for the 2010 model year. The most significant of these changes is indeed the removal of the Z's soft top in place of a folding hardtop setup. Does this mean that no true Z4 Coupe will be on the horizon? Only time will well.

Detroit 2009: Revenge Designs Introduces GTM-R Supercar

Revenge Designs unleashed its new supercar, the GTM-R, at the Detroit auto show this afternoon. Fitted with a GM-Performance LS7 427 engine, the GTM-R is capable of 505 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The vehicle, which is built in Decatur, Indiana, calls to mind the Corvette, and has an interior that encourages high-speed driving. With a price tag of $145,000, Revenge hopes to sell 100 GTM-R supercars this year.

Detroit 2009: Toyota Reveals The 2010 Prius, Boasting 50 MPG

After much anticipation, Toyota has finally pulled the wraps off of the all-new 2010 Prius hybrid which will hit American dealerships this coming Spring. The Prius has been slightly redesigned to improve the drag coefficient, and this effort has now made the Prius the most aerodynamic car in America. Small adjustments like a sleeker roof and larger rear spoiler aid in swooping the air over the car, improving fuel economy in the long run.

Fuel economy is the big story here, and Toyota says that the Prius will achieve a combined fuel economy rating of 50 miles per gallon -- besting the numbers recently quoted for the new Honda Insight. Obviously, we'll have to wait until we do real-world driving tests to see how these numbers stack up, but this initial rating of 50 mpg makes the Prius (once again) the most fuel-efficient car in America. Additionally, the Prius has been given a more powerful engine, delivering net power figures of 134 horsepower and 105 pound-feet of torque, able to scoot the little Toy from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under ten seconds. (Not that you'll be doing 0-60 runs in the Prius.)

Interior refinement is also improved with a new electronic display which shows hybrid functions, steering wheel controls, and other useful information pertaining to driving. Concerning functionality, the Prius' cargo area has been expanded by 0.4 inches in length and 2.2 inches in width because of a new battery cooling unit which saves space. Rear seat legroom has been improved greatly, as well.

We can't wait to drive this third-generation Prius and we're sure it will be a hit among consumers. In fact, Toyota hopes to sell 180,000 of these hybrids annually, which shouldn't be too hard to do if 50 mpg is on tap. TOYOTA REVEALS ALL-NEW PRIUS

DETROIT, January 12, 2009 --- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc.,
unveiled the all-new 50-mile-per gallon rated third-generation Prius hybrid vehicle
today at the 2009 North American International Auto show.
Celebrated as the benchmark for cars of the future, the Prius has
delivered superior fuel economy and ultra-low emissions to more than one million

The midsize third-generation 2010 Prius will offer even better mileage
ratings, enhanced performance, and innovative design features. It will be quieter,
roomier, and equipped with advanced standard and available features such as a
moonroof with solar panels, four driving modes, Intelligent Parking Assist (IPA)
and steering wheel touch controls that display on the instrument panel display.
An Eco-Icon
The first-generation Prius entered the market in 1997 as the world’s first
mass-produced hybrid. The name Prius, “to go before” in Latin, became symbolic
of a car that was launched even before environmental awareness had become a
mainstream social issue.
From the beginning, Toyota’s full-hybrid system was developed in-house
and has become a driving force behind advanced vehicle technology. The
company’s exclusive Hybrid Synergy Drive System was introduced in 2004 on
the second-generation Prius. Since then, more than 670,000 have been sold in
the U.S.

In designing the new, third-generation Prius, Toyota engineers combined
a careful refinement of existing systems with an aggressive measure of new
technology necessary for the future of automobiles.
Fuel Economy and Environmental Performance
The new Prius will be built using processes that reduce pollution in every
stage of vehicle life, from production and driving, through to disposal.
The third-generation Prius extends its record of continuous improvement
in fuel economy. The first-generation Prius, which was rated 41 EPA combined
mpg, was replaced by the current model, which is EPA rated at 46 mpg,
combined city/highway. Using a combination of technologies, fuel efficiency was
increased to an estimated 50 miles per gallon for the new Prius.
A larger and more powerful 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle, four-cylinder engine
will power the new Prius. Contrary to conventional wisdom, the larger engine
actually helps improve highway mileage. By making more torque, the new engine
can run at lower average rpm on the highway. When operating at lower rpm, the
new engine uses less fuel. Mileage is especially improved in cold-start conditions
and at higher speeds.
Use of an electric water pump and a new exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
system also contribute to the engine’s efficiency. The 1.8-liter Prius engine is the
first Toyota power plant that requires no belts under the hood for better fuel
economy and less potential maintenance.
A multi-information display panel that monitors fuel and energy
consumption is standard. It provides feedback on the Prius’ efficiency using
three different displays to help the driver acquire economical driving habits.
Unlike most other hybrid vehicles available, Prius has been a “full” hybrid
since introduction. This allows it to run on engine alone, battery alone, or a
combination of both. The system blends the best of parallel hybrid and series
hybrid designs to achieve the ability to operate on the electric mode alone, and to
charge the batteries while the car is running.

The patented Hybrid Synergy Drive system in the 2010 Prius is 90 percent
newly-developed with significant improvements over previous models.
• The transaxle is lighter in weight and reduces torque losses by as much
as 20 percent compared to the previous model.
• The inverter, which converts direct current to alternating current, has a
new direct cooling system to reduce size and weight.
• Taken together, the inverter, motor and transaxle are smaller, and 20
percent lighter.
• A newly developed electronically controlled regenerative braking system
has been adopted, with control logic optimized to enhance regeneration.
The new Prius will offer three alternative driving modes. EV-Drive Mode
allows driving on battery power alone at low speeds for about a mile, if conditions
permit. There is also a Power Mode, which increases sensitivity to throttle input
for a sportier feel, and an Eco Mode, which helps the driver achieve their best
mileage.
Cutting Edge Styling
In designing the new Prius, aerodynamic performance was an important
factor. The goal was to create a beautiful silhouette, while not compromising
function. Designers preserved the dynamic triangle form of the
current model--instantly recognizable as a Prius--but made alterations to the
overall profile, pillar position and angle. The front pillar, extended forward, helps
refine the performance-focusing, shaped form.
The overall height of the Prius is the same, but the roof profile is altered by
moving the top of the roof 3.9 inches to the rear. This emphasizes the wedge
shape, and also allows for enhanced rear headroom and improved
aerodynamics.

2010 Toyota Prius 4-4-4-4
The design of the new Prius’ front and rear corners are sharp, sporty and
aerodynamic. Strong side character lines, rising from front to rear, define the
glazed geometric shape. Viewed from the rear, wider rear treads provide a solid,
firmly rooted stance.
Dimensionally, the new Prius has the same wheelbase as the current
generation. Overall length is slightly increased by 0.6 inches, in part by moving
the front cowl forward.
World’s Lowest Cd
The new Prius received more wind tunnel hours of testing than any other
Toyota in history, resulting in the cleanest aerodynamic profile of any massproduced
vehicle in the world. By focusing on the shape of the body, underfloor,
wheelhouse liner and shape of the wheels, the designers of the new Prius were
able to reduce the coefficient of drag (Cd) value to 0.25, compared to 0.26 for the
previous model. The airflow under the car was studied extensively. Engineers
made changes to the shape of the fender liner, front surface of the underfloor,
and added a fin at the rear floor cover to increase linear stability.
Advanced Equipment For a New Era
An available sliding glass moonroof is packaged with solar panels, located
over the rear seating area, that power a new ventilation system. This solar
ventilation system uses an electrically powered air circulation fan that does not
require engine assist. The system prevents the interior air temperature from
rising while the vehicle is parked, making the cool-down time shorter when the
driver returns to the vehicle, thus reducing the use of air conditioning.
The remote air-conditioning system is the first system in the world to
function on battery-power alone and that can be remotely operated, so the driver
can adjust the interior temperature for comfort before getting in the car.

Reducing the vehicle’s power consumption, available LED (light emitting
diode) lamps are used for low beams and also in the tail and stop lamps. Air
conditioning, a major energy drain, has been re-engineered to increase efficiency
and cool-down performance. In addition, an exhaust heat recirculation system
reduces heat waste by warming engine coolant during cold startup, for improved
performance. It also heats up the passenger cabin more efficiently.
Enhanced Vehicle Performance
The next-generation Prius is built on a new platform, which enables
improved handling stability, quieter operation, and collision safety. The
suspension consists of front struts and a rear intermediate beam design, as
before, but handling stability is advanced by improving the stabilizer layout,
higher caster angle and tuning the bushing characteristics. Disc brakes are now
used on all four corners, replacing the front disc/rear drum brakes in the current
model.
Weight was saved through use of aluminum in the hood, rear hatch, front
suspension axle and brake caliper and super high-tensile steel in the rocker
inner, center pillar, and roof reinforcement. To meet customer expectations for
everyday performance, zero-to-60 acceleration has been improved to 9.8
seconds, more than a second faster, in internal testing.
Better-performing sound insulation, working with improved vibration
damping, has been installed in various locations to reduce road noise.
Functional Interior Is Bigger on the Inside
Proving that small changes add up to big gains, the cargo area of the new
Prius was expanded 0.4 inches in length and 2.2 inches in width by using a new
and an improved layout of the battery cooling unit.
Rear seat legroom is enhanced by a new space-saving contoured frontseat
design.

2010 Toyota Prius 6-6-6-6
Viewed from the cockpit, the center cluster smoothly flows from the
instrument panel to the console. Handy storage space has been added under the
shift lever by taking advantage of the shift-by-wire system. Simple, fin-type air
vents are consistent with the cabin’s efficient appearance. Judicious use of silver
accents adds a finished, technical feel.
Touch sensors on the steering wheel switches are designed to reduce
driver eye movement for better concentration on the road. When the driver
touches the audio or info switch located on the steering wheel, a duplicate image
is displayed on the instrument panel, directly in front of the driver. This system,
called Touch Tracer, is the first system in the world to allow steering wheel
controls to read out on the instrument panel.
The ECO indicator on the Multi-Informational Display (MID) provides driver
feedback for lower fuel consumption.
In pursuit of developing various advanced technologies aimed at realizing
sustainable mobility, Toyota will use plant-derived, carbon-neutral plastics in the
2010 Prius. The newly-developed plastics, known as “ecological plastic,” will be
used in the seat cushion foam, cowl side trim, inner and outer scuff plates, and
deck trim cover. Ecological plastic emits less CO2 during a product lifecycle
(from manufacturing to disposal) than plastic made solely from petroleum; it also
helps reduce petroleum use.
Safety Enhancements
The new Prius was designed to comply with class-top level collision safety
performance in each global region of sale, and to accommodate increasingly
strict safety requirements in the future.
In addition to advanced driver and front passenger Supplemental Restraint
System (SRS) airbags front and rear side curtain airbags, driver and passenger
seat-mounted side airbags and knee airbags are standard equipment.

Active headrests are used in both front seats to reduce the possibility of
whiplash in a collision. Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake
Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), electronic traction control (TRAC) and
Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) are included with Toyota’s standard Star Safety
System.
Dynamic Radar Cruise Control system, using advanced millimeter wave
radar, is an available option. The system also enables Lane Keep Assist, which
helps the driver stay safely within the lane, and the Pre-Collision System, which
retracts seatbelts and applies the brakes in certain conditions when a crash is
unavoidable.
Next-generation Intelligent Parking Assist features simplified settings to
help guide the car into parking spaces.
A backup monitor, which provides a view of rear obstacles when reverse
is engaged, is available with an optional voice-activated navigation system.
Safety Connect, Toyota’s first safety and security service, will be available a few
months after launch.
The development of the Prius has required applications for over 1,000
patents filed across the world, of which 292 are U.S. applications.
Pricing for the 2010 Prius will be announced shortly before it goes on sale
late spring.

Detroit 2009: Lincoln C Concept Offers Sensible Indulgence

If you read through the history book of Lincoln, you'll find mid-size and large luxury vehicles which are generally sort of soft and harmless all around. However, the Ford Motor Company wants the Lincoln brand to also produce some small car luxury offerings, and the first example of this comes via the C Concept -- a small hatchback based off of the next-generation Focus platform. Peter Horbury, executive director of design for the Americas says, "Modern luxury buyers who live and work in large, urban areas want to play their part in helping the environment by moving to a smaller vehicle, but they still want to enjoy the luxuries of life. The Lincoln C offers sensible indulgence."

Powering the C Concept is a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine mated to an all-new, dry, dual-clutch PowerShift six-speed transmission. This engine is said to produce 180 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque and will allow the C to achieve fuel economy figures as high as 43 miles per gallon on the highway.

Inside, the C Concept takes cues from Lincoln designs of the past: a bright, clean color palette with authentic wood and metal materials, jewel-like chrome details, and a symmetrical instrument panel design. Additionally, laser-engraved floral etching can be found on the passenger side seats and floor, as well as on the back of the driver's seat. Lincoln says that this pattern gives the C Concept a refined, sophisticated look.

There's no official word as to if/when the C Concept would see the light of day, but with America's new commitment to smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles, we wouldn't rule out seeing a Lincoln-branded small car somewhere in the very near future. LINCOLN C CONCEPT: BIG LUXURY IN SMALL PACKAGE

DETROIT, Jan. 12, 2009 – Lincoln is breaking new ground with the Lincoln C concept, a new big idea for a small luxury car.

Designed with today's upscale, urban consumer in mind, the Lincoln C concept brings the presence and elegance of a large Lincoln to a smaller, more efficient C-sized car.

"Modern luxury buyers who live and work in large, urban areas want to play their part in helping the environment by moving to a smaller vehicle, but they still want to enjoy the luxuries of life," said Peter Horbury, executive director of Design, The Americas. "The Lincoln C offers sensible indulgence."

According to Horbury, younger contemporary consumers with slim iPods and pocket-sized cameras have already grown accustomed to the notion of premium quality in a small package.

"During the past decade, people have gotten used to the idea that you could pay more money for a smaller version of the real thing," said Horbury, citing the evolution of music players from tapes to CDs to MP3 players as an example.

"The same philosophy can be applied to the automobile," he added. "People will be happy to buy a smaller car that is better for the environment and more maneuverable in the city as long as the vehicle has all the attributes they want."

The concept's unique size, lightweight construction and use of sustainable materials make the Lincoln C stand out – along with its fuel economy.

Featuring a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine and Ford's all-new dry, dual-clutch PowerShift six-speed transmission, the Lincoln C concept achieves 43 mpg on the highway, while offering up an impressive 180 horsepower and 180 ft.-lbs. of torque. Sporty, Elegant Exterior Design
When designers developed the Lincoln C concept, their goal was to create a C-sized automobile with both presence and elegance. Their vision: a smaller, more fuel-efficient car that could maneuver easily in congested urban areas and compact parking spaces, yet still provide driver and passengers with levels of luxury and comfort usually reserved for larger sedans.

"Lincoln C is about efficiency without compromise," said Freeman Thomas, director of Ford's Strategic Concepts Group, who led the Lincoln C design team – David Woodhouse, Jeremy Leng, Andrei Markevich and Matt Edwards.

One of the most distinctive features of the Lincoln C is its unique silhouette. The visual mass of the car is very low to the road. A low-slung shoulder line with a wheel-at-each-corner stance supports a dynamic, slightly formal cabin. The aim was "go kart" visual stability combined with elegant lines and surfaces.

At first glance, the silhouette is immediately distinguished by a bold front profile, low shoulder, high beltline, wide C-pillar and compact bustle back.

The modern appearance of the Lincoln C reflects the timeless, iconic elements of the Lincoln DNA: sheer surfaces bounded by defined creases; a cantilevered roof extending from a strong C-pillar; a confident double-wing chrome grille; full-width tail lamps and rocker brightwork.

The front end of the concept is unmistakably Lincoln. The signature grille encapsulates LED headlamps that – like the taillights – are made with prismatic optical elements that create depth and visual sophistication. A sculpted groove in the top of the front hood – which derives its shape from the Lincoln badge – adds a finishing touch to the grille of the car.

A low shoulder line combines with a strong, high belt line to create a sense of safety and privacy inside and outside of the vehicle.

An aluminum cantrail adds elegance to the concept by extending the beltline to the rear glass and breaking up the otherwise tall C-pillar. Aluminum is also visible inside the door apertures.

The Lincoln C is absent of a B-pillar or center post. The center-opening doors – a classic Lincoln trait that rekindles memories of the 1961 Continental – allow effortless access to first- and second-row bench seats and give the vehicle a limousine-like quality.

Sleek side mirrors house both advanced rear-view camera and blind spot detection technologies. Slit-like LED turn signal indicators are integrated into the mirrors, allowing slim, efficient light.

LED taillamps span the full-width of the Lincoln C's rear, featuring turn signal indicators that fade toward the center of the car stretch from side to side.

An all-glass roof provides a modern, futuristic look. The expansive opening illuminates the cabin and enhances the sense of spaciousness inside the car.

Designers reinterpreted the presentation of the Lincoln badge throughout the exterior of the Lincoln C in a subtle way, giving it a contemporary "race track" theme. The Lincoln star sits proudly at the center of the front end, and the rear badge is slightly morphed to suit its placement above the taillights.

A more in-depth look at various details of the Lincoln C reveals that the badge motif is repeated in discreet ways in the design of the front lower intake mesh; the shape of the glass roof and structure; the implied illuminated keyholes on the door handles; the shape of the rear-view camera that sits on the back of the roof; the design of the wheels and the pattern in the tire treads.

The exterior of the Lincoln C is bathed in a light, exterior clear coat that hints of yellow metallic.

Modern, Timeless Interior Design
Inside, the Lincoln C concept welcomes driver and passengers to a space that looks more like the living room of a contemporary urban loft than the inside of a car.

Elements of classic Lincoln DNA permeate the cabin, including: a bright, clean, light color palette; authentic materials such as wood and metal; ambient lighting; jewel-like chrome details; bench seating; and the symmetrical design of the instrument panel, which thoughtfully serves both driver and passengers.

The interior's all-white color palette -- from roof to seats to floor -- is stunning. Subtle chrome accents on the seats, instrument panel, door panels and floor glimmer like fine jewelry. A light gray wood veneer – made from recycled wood – provides a striking contrast against the white leather on the instrument panel and door panels. The headliner is white Alcantara suede.
Because the Lincoln C concept is two inches wider than conventional C-class vehicles, it offers the roominess of a 1961 Continental at almost half the length. In modern terms, the vehicle has the overall length of a Ford Focus and the overall width of a Lincoln MKZ.

Designers took full advantage of the extra space in the interior of the Lincoln C by incorporating luxurious bench seating in the front and back rows. They are crafted from luxurious, chromium-free leather and filled with soy foam. The seats are thin and lightweight, but because they were designed to an ergonomic comfort curve, they are extremely comfortable.

There is a single headrest on the left and a double headrest on the right for passengers in both rows. All the headrests automatically retract without occupants for optimized driver vision. Convenience trays are housed compactly behind the front bench. In the closed position, they are flush with the leather and feature chrome release handles.

One of the most eye-catching elements of the seating is the laser-engraved floral etching on the passenger side seats and floor and on the back of the driver's seat. It is a light, airy pattern that gives the interior a refined, sophisticated look.

Because of their unique shape and the imperceptible way that they are mounted to the floor, the benches appear to be floating inside the cabin.

The steering wheel and instrument panel also seem to be suspended in air. All of these elements combine to enhance the concept's futuristic look, openness, and give the impression of dynamic space within the vehicle.

The steering wheel is hubless, lending the driver an unobstructed view of the instrument panel. The glossy white rim rotates around a stationary chrome ring with chrome shifter paddles on both sides. Simple toggles embedded into the left and right sides of the wheel control the vehicle's navigation system and menu selection.

The instrument panel is leather-wrapped with a chrome bezel. The light, gray wood veneer forms a symmetrical shape that surrounds the center-mounted touch screen and extends out to the right and left sides. Above the center screen is the Lincoln nomenclature and badge, finished tastefully in chrome.

The panoramic instrument panel is divided into three sections and designed with a mixture of digital and analog components. The left side contains Lincoln's signature HMI menus and driver-related information. The center portion displays a multi-functional screen displaying navigation, SYNC details and a life-like custom avatar to help make everyday journeys more seamless and other helpful, driver-oriented options.

Soft, white ambient lighting creates a relaxing atmosphere inside the cabin. The lighting is integrated into the C-pillar with a front face that displays the Lincoln badge.

The roof also features an integrated rearview mirror and a chrome-trimmed Web camera that rotates to the right or left, depending on whether the driver or the passenger is communicating via the Internet. A chrome air vent follows the shape of the glass roof.

"While the most luxurious and indulgent products often come in the smallest packages, unfortunately this hasn't been true of most small cars recently," said J Mays, Ford's group vice president of Design. "With the Lincoln C, we've remixed the traditional small car formula, taking the most engaging technologies and wrapping them in a design fit for today's urban luxury customer – without sacrificing style or substance."

LINCOLN C PAIRS ECOBOOST I-4 WITH DUAL-CLUTCH POWERSHIFT TRANSMISSION FOR 40-PLUS MPG

DETROIT, Jan. 12, 2009 – The Lincoln C concept showcases Ford Motor Company's newest combination of fuel-efficient powertrain innovations: a four-cylinder EcoBoost engine mated to a dual-clutch PowerShift transmission.

Featuring a 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine and Ford's all-new dry, dual-clutch PowerShift six-speed transmission, Lincoln C achieves a projected 43 mpg on the highway, while offering up an estimated 180 horsepower and 180 ft.-lbs. of torque. That's a nearly 25 percent fuel-economy improvement over Lincoln C's fuel-sipping C-car cousin, the Ford Focus, which currently delivers unsurpassed highway fuel economy in its segment when equipped with a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine.

"Lincoln C demonstrates that a higher degree of engine downsizing as the key to fuel economy improvement, paired with the right technologies, can deliver optimum horsepower, torque and drive-away capability," said Andreas Schamel, a chief engine engineer with Ford's Powertrain Research Laboratory. "Plus, when combined with the PowerShift six-speed transmission, the impossible equation becomes perfectly possible: lower fuel consumption, increased power and smoother, more fun-to-drive performance."
The 1.6-Liter EcoBoost Engine
The Lincoln C concept's 1.6-liter engine dimensions the common attributes of Ford's EcoBoost strategy, leveraging a combination of direct fuel injection technology and turbocharging to deliver significantly improved fuel economy and torque versus a larger displacement engine, while reducing emissions up to 15 percent.

The 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine features turbocharging and a central-injector direct injection system. Using a central injector instead of a side-injector system provides improved fuel-air mixture preparation, helping to further reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions. A central injector-based system also provides the most flexible foundation for future fuel-saving technologies.

"We know that a central injection system is a prerequisite for future global fuel economy upgrades such as stratified lean operation, homogeneous charge compression ignition or HCCI, and premium injection system technology if the market demands," said Martin Wirth, a Ford Direct Injection Gasoline Systems and Combustion technical specialist. "It's a value solution that gives us the ability to answer market trends quickly and provide broad market coverage, a key component of the EcoBoost strategy to deliver an affordable, fuel-efficient engine technology at high volumes."

When compared to a standard 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine, the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine can deliver up to a 10-percent gain in fuel economy simply on the merits of the engine downsizing and boosting as well as common powertrain systems such as twin independent variable camshaft timing (TI-VCT).

TI-VCT varies the phase of the intake and exhaust cams independently for improved airflow through the engine, which delivers more torque while reducing average fuel consumption by up to 5 percent. "TI-VCT gives us better low-end torque and drive-away capabilities even under the stronger engine downsizing conditions," said Wirth.

The 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine also features other sophisticated fuel-saving powertrain technologies such as Assisted Direct Start, which contributes to an additional 3 percent gain in fuel efficiency.

Assisted Direct Start automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle is at idle – at a stop light, for example – and automatically restarts the engine when the brake is released or gas pedal is engaged, improving fuel economy by saving idle fuel consumption.

When a vehicle comes to a stop, the electronic control unit immediately synchronizes the engine's systems for restart. Once the brake pedal is released or the gas pedal is engaged, a short starter engagement triggers the direct fuel injection system to fill the cylinders with fuel, initiate combustion and start the engine, producing the no-hesitation vehicle launch. An advanced battery management system converts braking energy into electricity and stores it to keep electrical systems operating while the engine is not running.

This advanced system provides consistent start behavior of the stopped or stopping engine that is smooth, quiet and seamless to the customer, requiring no changes in driver behavior.

Powershift Transmission
The Lincoln C concept also features Ford's dual-clutch PowerShift six-speed transmission, which delivers the efficiency of a manual with the ease of operation of a premium automatic transmission.

Compared to traditional automatic four-speed transmissions, PowerShift can help reduce fuel consumption by up to 9 percent depending on the application. PowerShift, for example, contributes to an estimated 8 percent uptick in Lincoln C's fuel efficiency when compared to the current Focus.

"The Lincoln C application of PowerShift helps illustrate the competitive advantage this transmission will offer to Ford in the global small car markets," said Jack Dorigo, North America Powertrain Planning manager. "It's a new-to-segment technology that's an improvement over today's automatic transmissions in terms of fuel economy while providing customers a more connected feel between the pedal and the vehicle's acceleration."

PowerShift provides the full comfort of an automatic with a more sophisticated driving dynamic, thanks to uninterrupted torque from the dual-clutch technology, which consists essentially of two manual transmissions working in parallel, each with its own independent clutch unit. One clutch carries the uneven gears – 1, 3 and 5 – while the other the even gears – 2, 4 and 6. Subsequent gear changes are coordinated between both clutches as they engage and disengage for a seamless delivery of torque to the wheels.

The lean curb weight of the Lincoln C enables a dry-clutch derivative of Ford's PowerShift transmission for added efficiency and durability. A dry clutch transmits power and torque through manual transmission clutch facings, while most automatic transmissions utilize wet clutch plates submerged in oil. As a result, the dry-clutch PowerShift transmission does not require an oil pump or torque converter, providing superior mechanical efficiency.

"A dry clutch is a real sweet spot for lighter vehicle applications like the Lincoln C concept," said Piero Aversa, manager, Ford Automatic Transmission Engineering. "It is perfectly matched to this vehicle and engine. PowerShift is more efficient, it saves weight, is more durable, more efficient and the unit is sealed for life, requiring no regular maintenance."

Lincoln C weighs in at 2,750 lbs. due to a number of light-weighting measures, including the transmission. PowerShift, unlike conventional automatic transmissions, does not need the pound-adding torque converter or planetary gears. In addition, the dry-clutch derivative eliminates the need for the weighty pumps, hydraulic fluids, cooling lines and external coolers that wet clutch transmissions require. As a result, the dry-clutch PowerShift transmission showcased on the Lincoln C is nearly 30 pounds lighter than the four-speed automatic transmission featured on today's Focus.

Differentiating PowerShift even further in terms of its customer appeal is its shift quality, launch feel and overall drive dynamic, which are all facilitated by an expert blend of Ford-exclusive electro-mechanical systems, software features, calibrations and controls. These unique driving features include:

• Neutral coast down – The clutches will disengage when the brakes are applied, improving coasting downshifts and clutch robustness as well as reducing parasitic losses for increased fuel economy.

• Precise clutch control in the form of a clutch slip to provide torsional damping of the engine vibration – This function improves noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) at low engine speeds and enables lower lugging limits for improved fuel economy.

• Low-speed driving or creep mode with integrated brake pressure – This function simulates the low-speed control drivers are accustomed to from an automatic transmission. T he amount of rolling torque in Drive and Reverse is precisely controlled, gradually building as brake pressure is released.

• Hill mode or launch assist – Prevents a vehicle from rolling back on a grade by maintaining brake pressure until the engine delivers enough torque to move the vehicle up the hill, providing improved driver confidence, comfort, safety and clutch robustness.

DETROIT, Jan. 12, 2009 – Powered by a sophisticated human machine interface (HMI) and forward-thinking in-car connectivity technologies, the Lincoln C concept reinvents the automobile as a customer's companion in life on and off the road.

Lincoln C's car-to-companion transformation is the result of an innovative melding of Ford's new signature HMI as well as a next-generation in-car connectivity features anchored by Ford's award-winning SYNC technology and a revolutionary new system that helps intuitively connect occupants with the vehicle, their mobile devices and even the outside world.

All interaction and information is offered up in a simple, intelligent format that keeps a driver informed – but not distracted.

Simple, Sophisticated Control
The foundation of Lincoln C's connectivity capabilities is Ford's signature HMI.

This intelligent interface makes useful and relevant information and functionality immediately available to the driver in a way that is logical, easy to use and completely integrated.
"Before technologies such as SYNC were even crystallized, we knew we had to create a way for people to interface with their vehicle and its myriad technologies and features that was more manageable and limitless in terms of its ability to incorporate new innovations as they come," said Gary Braddock, Ford's group chief designer. "Our HMI had to create for the auto world what the mouse is to the PC world."

Unique to Ford's HMI strategy is the seemingly simplistic approach to how and where information is displayed. All car-related information, for example, appears to the left of the speedometer, including fuel economy, trip information and vehicle diagnostics. Passenger-related functions, such as audio, climate, navigation and phone, appear to the right of the instrument cluster.

"The beauty of this system is that the way information is offered encourages you to explore deeper and deeper and discover – without fear or intimidation – just how much the product can do for you," said Braddock.

The system's integrated platform offers tried-and-true methods of information control – steering wheel switches, touch screens and voice-activation – which can be alternatively used by the driver depending on the task, desire for control and preference.

The set of steering wheel controls, one on the left to access the car-related information and another on the right for the people-related functions, uses a stereotypical five-way mapping similar to that found on most cell phones and MP3 players – up, down, left, right and a center OK button – creating instant familiarity for the user.

Ford's signature HMI also aligns cluster and center stack display technologies and graphic treatments for visual harmony and synchronized information delivery. In the case of the Lincoln C concept, the touch-screen center stack has a four-corner layout that includes phone in the upper left, audio in the lower left, navigation in the upper right and climate in the lower right.

"Our vision for HMI is to make a customer's transition from home, to car, to the office and back again be experienced as seamless and uncompromised," said John Schneider, global chief engineer responsible for HMI, Driver Controls and Infotainment. "We want our vehicles to give you exactly what you need, when you need it and how need it. And, we want to do it in a way that adds emotion, personality and excitement for the customer."

In-Car Connectivity
Lincoln C features the latest in terms of SYNC-enabled technologies, providing hands-free, voice-activated cell phone, text messaging, and digital media player integration as well as security and personalized convenience features such as 911 Assist and Vehicle Health Reports.

In addition, the in-vehicle communications system is expanded to include a proprietary plug-and-play network architecture that can use a Bluetooth-enabled phone to access Internet-based services such as traffic reports, turn-by-turn navigation, a 14-million-plus business directory listing, weather forecasts, the latest sports scores and more. Customers have the option to personalize this information.

This latest evolution of SYNC with the Traffic, Directions and Information feature is set to launch next year on nearly all 2010 Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles.

"SYNC puts Ford in a sweet spot in terms of vehicle connectivity because it allows us to take the cockpit of a vehicle and open it up to our customers' personal devices, especially the mobile phone – which is considered by many as an extension of oneself," said Joseph Berry, a member of Ford's newly formed Consumer Service Organization and a lead architect of the company's emerging off-board services system.

In-Car Companion
Catapulting Lincoln C's in-car connectivity to an unprecedented level is the system that uses a life-like avatar to connect the driver to the vehicle and all the functionality offered through key systems such as Ford's signature HMI and SYNC.

This avatar – nicknamed "EVA" – lives on the Lincoln C instrument panel and can take on a personalized visual image and personality. It responds to conversational speech, eliminating the need for menus or learned voice commands. Plus, EVA expertly manages and initiates all vehicle and SYNC-enabled functions and information to the driver. The avatar can even sense a driver's mood through voice and drive style and respond appropriately with, for example, a favorite song suggestion from a SYNC-connected MP3 music library.

This unique system on the Lincoln C concept also offers in-car Internet access, allowing the avatar to surf the Web for the driver and read the morning's online news headlines or latest restaurant reviews, check e-mail, or access a friend's Facebook page. The system will even advise the driver when and where to refuel based on fuel level, driving habits, gas station locations and current prices.

"We've taken the notion of effective vehicle HMI and the user's experience to the next level," said Braddock. "Our system creates a method of organization and function in the vehicle that is intuitive, familiar and keeps the driver focused on driving, along with creating a personality within the vehicle that evokes emotion, a personal connection and a sense of confident control."

Featuring all-new AJ-V8 Gen III direct-injection engines, the XF now delivers more power and more performance with comparable or better fuel economy and emissions than the engines they supersede.

Tesla Offers New, More Powerful ‘Sport’ Model

With 150 roadsters already delivered to its customers, Tesla has recently added a new model to its lineup called the Roadster Sport. Essentially an upgraded version of the original roadster, the Sport has 15 percent more power, totaling to about 285 horsepower (compared to the regular 248), bringing the 0-60 time down to 3.7 seconds— 0.2 faster than the standard model.

The additional power partially comes from the hand-wound stator with a higher winding density and lower resistance, which (apparently) provides a higher peak torque. The electric motor redlines at 14,000 rpm with power transmitted to high-performance Yokohama tires via an upgraded gearbox found in the “powertrain 1.5” package. Improved suspension, including adjustable dampers and anti-roll bars, keep the Roadster Sport firmly planted on the ground.

Tesla has already started taking orders on the $128,500 Sport in the U.S., and the first completed models are expected to be delivered in late June. For the 1,100 customers who have yet to receive their Tesla, they can still upgrade to the more powerful model.

Detroit 2009: The 2010 Lincoln MKT Shows Its Face

When the Ford Flex came out, we knew it wouldn't be long before the Blue Oval folks cross-branded that platform within their portfolio. In fact, when we first saw the Lincoln MKT concept at last year's show, we knew right away that Lincoln would be getting a luxury version of the seven-passenger crossover. However, as you can see in these images, Ford has done a really good job of making the MKT and Flex very, very different from one another, though some might say that the resulting design isn't too flattering here on the Lincoln. Like the new Taurus that was introduced yesterday, the MKT will hit dealerships this summer.

Aside from a new design, the MKT also gets more standard power than the Flex, using the 3.7-liter V-6 found in the Lincoln MKS sedan. This engine delivers 268 horsepower, though consumers can opt for an EcoBoost 3.5-liter V-6 producing around 355 horsepower. Like other applications of EcoBoost, it will only be mated to AWD-equipped MKTs.

On the inside, perforated leather meets the laundry list of premium and technological features that Ford is putting on their high-end cars these days, including SYNC, Sirius travel link, a vista roof, dual climate control, and heated and power everything. While the exterior may not be too pretty, the interior of the MKT will surely be a nice place to relax while driving home from a long day at the office.

Fuel-efficiency also comes standard on the Lincoln MKT – and customers have a choice of two powerful yet practical V-6 engines.

A 3.7-liter, 24-valve variation of the award-winning Duratec engine family is standard. Delivering an expected 268 horsepower at 6,500 RPM and 267 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 RPM, this engine has been tuned to provide brisk acceleration and smooth power delivery with best-in-class noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) control.

A two-speed fuel pump and Aggressive Deceleration Fuel Shut-Off (ADFSO), combined with optimized transmission and final drive gearing, are designed to help this engine to deliver segment-leading fuel economy of an estimated 24 mpg highway, besting both the Acura MDX and Audi Q7 by 4 mpg..

For even more performance driving feel, Lincoln MKT also offers a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6. This engine provides the power of a normally-aspirated V-8 with V-6 fuel economy. This advanced engine delivers a class-leading estimated 355 horsepower at 5,700 RPM, while generating 350 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,500 RPM.

EcoBoost is a global Ford strategy to deliver the power that customers want, combined with the fuel economy that they need. Combining gasoline direct injection with twin turbochargers and a smaller-displacement engine, EcoBoost can match the power output of larger, naturally aspirated engines while yielding torque and fuel economy gains.

Pressurized direct injection helps eliminate the "turbo lag" associated with earlier turbocharged engines. And even with the additional horsepower, fuel economy is optimized by an increased compression ratio, enabled by air-charged cooling and sophisticated knock controls.

Lincoln MKT is equipped with a six-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission. This advanced gearbox offers the driver a choice between fully automatic operation and manual control.

Key elements of Lincoln MKT suspension development and tuning included minimizing front end lift on acceleration, offering stable and engaging steering and handling characteristics that provide confidence to all drivers, all while delivering a luxurious ride quality consistent with Lincoln brand character.

A new rear suspension system features a "one for one" shock absorber ratio. The resulting linear response gave the engineering team a stable base line for suspension tuning, allowing the team to deliver a better balance between responsive handling and control as well as a smooth ride. It also improves rear suspension isolation and enables the use of 20-inch wheels.

Lincoln MKT delivers a new level of quiet confidence that delivers best-in-class levels of NVH control. Virtual modeling and wind tunnel tests helped engineers optimize the vehicle, influencing everything from side view mirror placement and special sound deadening in the bulkhead to extensive exhaust system isolation and the inclusion of both an acoustic windshield and dual-layer front side glass to specifically reduce A-pillar wind noise.

On the 3.5 EcoBoost V-6 equipped versions, engineers directed additional effort to minimizing induction noise, while still providing a rewarding aural cadence to Lincoln MKT acceleration.

Premium innovations

Lincoln MKT delivers abundant technologies aimed at making life luxurious for both the driver and three rows of passengers. A holistic approach was used to develop these amenities, where ease of use and intuitive operation were key objectives. Nowhere is this focus more apparent than with Active Park Assist.

Lincoln MKT with EcoBoost features advanced Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS), which enables the optional Active Park Assist. This innovative Lincoln-exclusive technology employs an ultrasonic-based sensing system, as opposed to video camera-reliant competitive offerings, making hands-free parallel parking a breeze.

Active Park Assist works at the touch of a button, requiring less driver programming, reducing the risk of selecting an inappropriately sized parking space, detecting edges of adjacent objects to calculate optimized trajectory and "steering" the Lincoln MKT while coaching the driver through conventional throttle and braking inputs.

In addition to completing a parking maneuver quickly, Active Park Assist is also the first system to operate in uphill parking situations, unlike competitive systems on the market.

Additional Lincoln MKT customer convenience features include:

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) allows the driver to set and maintain vehicle speed, while radar monitors traffic ahead of the Lincoln MKT. This optional system automatically adjusts speed and slows the vehicle to maintain the set distance behind traffic ahead.

Intelligent Access with Push Button Start allows the driver to enter the Lincoln MKT and start the engine without using the key. Entry is made easier as drivers simply carry the special fob as they approach the vehicle and start the engine by pushing a button.

Rain-Sensing Wipers use an optical sensing system to gauge precipitation and automatically activate and adjust the wipers.

MyKey™ allows parent or other concerned owners to restrict certain Lincoln MKT features when in the hands of a MyKey driver.

MyKey encourages safety belt usage, provides earlier low fuel warnings, engages applicable driver aid systems and sounds speed chimes at preset levels while limiting audio system volume and top vehicle speed.

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS™) comes into play when a turn signal is activated. A radar sensor on the outboard rear quarter panel monitors the traditional blind spot area and can notify the driver with a warning indicator light in the corresponding side view mirror if the sensors in this optional system detect a vehicle in the blind spot.

Cross Traffic Alert uses BLIS sensors to help detect traffic when backing out of a parking space. When the vehicle is in reverse and it senses traffic, mirror warning lights illuminate and audible signals sound.

Spotter Mirrors add secondary convex spotter mirror panels in the top outer corner of the side view mirrors, specifically oriented to reflect objects often lost in a driver's blind spot.

Reverse Camera System, a standard Lincoln MKT feature, uses the centerstack-mounted touch/ navigation screen for projection and activates upon reverse gear engagement.

Lincoln SYNC™ is standard on Lincoln MKT. This award-winning voice activated communications and entertainment system developed by Ford and Microsoft fully integrates Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones and digital media players into the vehicle.

SYNC incorporates 911 Assist, which can notify a local 911 emergency operator in the event of an air bag deployment incident. SYNC Vehicle Health Report feature can keep the driver notified of scheduled maintenance, service intervals and vehicle system health information.

Lincoln MKT is offered with two audio technology choices. Standard is an AM/FM In-Dash Single CD/DVD/MP3 capable unit with 10 speakers, SIRIUS® Satellite Radio with six-month prepaid subscription, an auxiliary input jack and a USB port.

The available Navigation Package includes an internal hard-drive for map and point-of-interest information storage, THX II® Certified 5.1 Surround Audio System with 14 strategically aimed Premium Audio speakers.

A unique new technology, making its debut in the Lincoln MKT audio upgrade package, is Neural Surround significantly improving the surround sound experience from compressed digital music formats. In addition, a SIRIUS Travel Link™ prepaid subscription is included with the Navigation Package providing coast-to-coast weather data, forecasts, fuel prices, sports scores, movie listings and more.

The available Navigation Package also enables the driver to display personal photos on the centerstack-mounted touchscreen. The system can store and display up to 32 photos, sized 1.5MB or less. The home screen can be personalized, by display or desired information or photos in one, tow or three panel views.

Both systems feature an internal Jukebox hard drive for storage of up to 150 hours of recorded audio entertainment. Users can browse the Jukebox via touch screen or voice control. Gracenote® technology will display the CD cover when a selected track is playing.

Technology under the skin

"The new Lincoln MKT brings together a compelling package of active and passive safety features that work to help protect its passengers," said Stephen Kozak, safety engineering chief.

The Lincoln MKT features a new technology aimed at helping make driving safer.

Collision Warning with Brake Support, enabled by Adaptive Cruise Control, provides the driver with a "heads-up" display that flashes on the windshield when the system senses slower moving traffic ahead. If the driver doesn't respond, the system will pre-charge the brakes to prepare the vehicle for a more aggressive stop.

The Lincoln MKT also features an advanced structural safety system that combines octagonal front frame rails, tunnel rails, and support members that are designed to absorb and redirect crash forces away from the passenger compartment.

Lincoln MKT also features Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement (SPACE) Architecture incorporated to optimize side-impact occupant protection.

The SPACE system integrates a hydroformed high strength steel tube embedded in the floor that runs the width of the vehicle from B-pillar to B-pillar and along the rocker panels to form a safety cage to help protect passengers in side impact incidents.

Lincoln MKT also features Ford's enhanced Personal Safety System, combining multiple technologies to tailor the air bag package and safety belt functions to the individual passenger and the accident circumstances. The system can identify variables, such as severity of the crash, weight of the individual passenger and safety belt usage to adjust air bag deployment force.

So Cold In The D: Auto Workers Protest Outside of Detroit Auto Show

The 2009 North American International Auto Show kicked off today, and while things were going relatively smoothly inside of Cobo Hall, a small group of auto workers held a protest just across the street. These local workers were protesting against labor concessions that the Bush administration has demanded in return for the bailout loans which were recently approved for both General Motors and Chrysler.

What's interesting about this is that both Ford and GM had large groups of their employees attending their respective press conferences. These American auto workers cheered along as the executives from each company introduced their new products and latest achievements.

As the afternoon went on, the protesters gradually faded away, but there's always a chance that they'll be back for the rest of press week, or potentially picketing when the Detroit Auto Show opens to the public on Saturday. For all of the details, click on over to Reuters.

Detroit 2009: Bentley's 600-Horsepower Continental GTC Speed

Bentley is one automaker that doesn't believe in flashy lights or extravagant press conferences simply because the products, like the new Continental GTC Speed, really speak for themselves. There's no denying that this is one gorgeous convertible, and the Bentley name means its hand-crafted, super luxurious, and extremely powerful.

This variant, the GTC Speed, is capable of reaching 200 miles per hour and is advertised as Bentley's most powerful convertible ever. Under the hod lies a 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W-12 engine which produces an astonishing 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, running to the ground via permanent all-wheel drive. Even so, the GTC Speed can hit 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, making it supercar fast but with really elegant style. This show car looks particularly interesting with its steel grey exterior color and the bright red interior finish, though in typical Bentley fashion, consumers will have a wide array of options to really personalize their GTCs.

Since its debut in 2006, the Continental GTC has enjoyed sales success in over 50 countries across the globe, attracting younger buyers to the Bentley marque. Customers are attracted to its sleek design, interior craftsmanship, refined performance and agile handling.

Now, the introduction of the new GTC range builds on this success with a subtle evolution of its distinctive style and a range of technical and feature enhancements benefiting comfort and customer choice. The appeal of the GTC is further strengthened by the addition of the new 600bhp (610PS) GTC Speed model. It is Bentley's most powerful convertible ever and inspired by Bentley's legendary 'Speed Models' from the 1920s.

The new GTC models share a fresh frontal appearance. The radiator grille is more upright with a more pronounced square edge, accentuating the Bentley profile, and bolder lower air intake. These latest models are further distinguished by chrome headlamp bezels, the availability of two new exterior paints and a new color hide.

For the standard GTC, new low-friction dampers provide improved ride comfort. The GTC's chassis and exceptionally rigid steel body have proved more than capable of coping with the power of the 552bhp (560PS) 6-litre W12 engine. For the new Continental GTC Speed, Bentley's twin-turbocharged W12 now develops 600bhp (610PS) that delivers true 200 mph (322 km/h) performance, with the roof up, with exhilarating, effortless acceleration. Even with the roof down the GTC Speed can reach 195 mph (312 km/h).

The Continental GTC Speed is visually distinguished by subtle design enhancements which emphasize its higher performance credentials. At the front, the radiator and lower air intake grilles feature a dark tinted matrix as standard. Larger diameter 9.5J x 20-inch, multi-spoke alloy wheels with Bentley-bespoke Pirelli PZero ultra-high performance (UHP) tires, lowered and uprated suspension, wider twin-rifled exhaust tail pipes and a new boot-mounted lip spoiler that enhances high speed aerodynamics, reinforce the sporting character of the Speed model.

The GTC Speed's 600bhp (610PS) W12 engine develops 9 per cent more power than the standard GTC. However, it is the 15 per cent increase in torque that really distinguishes the Speed model, which now develops an impressive output of 750 Nm (553lb ft). This is achieved across virtually the complete rev range, from just 1700 to 5600 rev/min, delivering that characteristic Bentley wave of torque.

The 0-60 mph sprint is reached in a mere 4.5 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds) and 0-100 mph in 10.6 seconds (0-160 km/h in 10.5 seconds).

The GT Speed coupe, which debuted in 2007, has become the top selling GT model across the globe. This was followed in summer 2008 by the 4-door Continental Flying Spur Speed. Now, the Speed family is completed with the introduction of the GTC Speed, which is expected to account for up to two-thirds of GTC sales worldwide in its first year of production.

Enhanced powertrain delivers more power and torque

Both Continental GTC models are powered by Bentley's 6-litre, twin-turbocharged W12 engine which is produced exclusively at the company's Crewe engine plant. The Bentley W12 is the most compact 12-cylinder engine in production with 48 valves and 4 camshafts with continually variable valve timing. Power is transmitted via a ZF six-speed automatic transmission.

The new Continental GTC Speed is powered by Bentley's W12 engine in its most powerful, 600 bhp (610PS) form. It develops 15 per cent more torque and 9 per cent more power than the 552bhp (560PS) standard GTC.

Engine efficiency improvements result from the use of lower friction, lighter-weight components and a new engine management system, while twin, low inertia turbochargers with minimal turbo lag contribute to the W12 engine's flat torque curve. In 600 bhp (610PS) form, the W12 develops a maximum torque of 750 Nm (553 lb ft) from 1700 rev/min all the way up to 5600 rev/min. The GTC Speed engine is visually differentiated by the 'crackle black' finish to the intake manifold.

This endows the GTC Speed with a top speed of 200mph (322 km/h) with the roof-up and a 0-60mph sprint time of just 4.5 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.8 secs). It also accelerates from 0-100 mph in just 10.6 seconds (0-160 km/h in 10.5 seconds).

The six-speed transmission can be left in two fully automatic modes (Drive and Sport) or used as a clutchless manual where the driver can change gears sequentially, via either the gearlever or paddles mounted behind the steering wheel.

The advanced continuous all-wheel drive system of both GTC models provides exceptional traction in all weathers. The drive is transferred between the front and rear axles via a highly sensitive centre Torsen differential. If the differential detects a deviation in torque demand between the two axles it automatically sends more power to the wheels with greater grip.

Both the GTC and GTC Speed also feature an advanced electronic stability program (ESP 8.1). The 'Sport Traction' mode for the GTC moderates ESP intervention at low speeds, benefiting driver interaction and control, particularly on low traction surfaces. The 'Dynamic Mode' of the GTC Speed allows increased wheel slip at higher speeds compared to the standard chassis. This ensures that torque is reinstated more quickly, allowing the driver to exploit the full potential of the engine.

A luxury convertible with outstanding ride and handling

The Continental GTC's steel body has an exceptionally rigid torsional stiffness of around 30Hz that not only minimizes 'scuttle shake' but provides a very stable platform for the aluminum-intensive suspension system, optimizing its performance. Despite the boost in power and torque for the GTC Speed model, no changes to the body structure were required.

For the 552bhp (560PS) GTC, new low-friction dampers provide improved secondary ride (the response of the car to poor road surfaces) and even greater levels of comfort.

The GTC Speed has a range of dynamic enhancements that deliver a more sporting, open-top Bentley driving experience. The retuned Continuous Damping Control (CDC) system ensures that the body response matches the inputs from the new sports wheels and tires, while improved body control reduces pitch and roll when cornering enthusiastically. In addition, stiffer rear axle bushes deliver better axle control and turn-in response.

The GTC Speed's suspension is lowered by 10 mm at the front and 15 mm at the rear for improved handling, while the retuned speed-sensitive steering system and solid-mounted front subframe, shared with the standard GTC, benefit steering response.

The wider 9.5J x 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, unique to the GTC Speed, are fitted with bespoke 275/35 ZR20 Pirelli PZero ultra-high performance tires that provide the car with superior grip as well as sharper steering response and feel.

To ensure optimum aerodynamic balance at speeds up to 200 mph (322 km/h) the new GTC Speed is fitted with a discreet spoiler on the trailing edge of the bootlid. This provides additional downforce and increases the top speed.

For both models, Bentley's carbon-ceramic brakes (CCB) are offered as a cost option. Larger diameter (420 mm front, 356 mm rear), lightweight discs and eight-piston calipers offer fade-resistant braking performance with minimal disc distortion under high thermal conditions. A 20kg weight saving reduces unsprung mass and benefits steering response and handling. This braking system may only be specified with 20-inch diameter wheels and are the largest and most powerful brakes ever fitted to a production car.

The standard-fit tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) allows drivers to select tire type and speed range parameters. As well as monitoring pressures, the system warns drivers if their speed is too high for the tire pressures or if tire speed ratings are exceeded on winter tires.

Commenting on the GTC Speed's character, Dr. Ulrich Eichhorn, Member of the Board, Engineering, said:

Subtle evolution of the GTC's distinctive style

Both the GTC and GTC Speed benefit from subtle revisions to their frontal appearance.

The matrix grille is now more vertical and has a more pronounced square edge that accentuates the distinctive Bentley profile. A new lower bumper design with a widened air intake reinforces the sporting stance of both GTC convertibles, complemented by new chrome headlamp bezels. The new design also provides a practical benefit by improving airflow to the more powerful Speed engine by 14 per cent.

The GTC Speed has a unique set of design cues, notably a dark-tinted matrix grille to the upper and lower air intakes, a black lower bumper valance, wider, rifled exhaust tailpipes and 20-inch, silver-painted, multi-spoke alloy wheels. The wheels are available as an option with a special dark tint finish.

GTC and GTC Speed customers have a choice of 17 'standard' paint colors including two new colors (Aquamarine and Blue Crystal).

Luxurious hand-crafted cabin

The cabins of both GTC and GTC Speed are available with a choice of 6 natural, unbleached, laser-cut wood veneers and 17 premium grade leather hides, including the new option, Aquamarine.

The GTC Speed's cabin is based on that of the Mulliner Driving Specification (a cost option on the standard GTC). It features diamond quilted hide seats with embroidered Bentley emblems, knurled chrome and hide gearlever and a three-spoke multi-function steering wheel with brushed aluminum switch surround. These are complemented by drilled alloy foot-pedals and 'Speed' logos to the polished treadplates. The standard GTC also receives a new Bentley 'B' brake pedal.

A range of options give further opportunities for personalization, including fascia panels, centre console, door pads and rear quarters in bright aluminum. Uniquely, the GTC Speed is also available with a dark tint aluminum option.

New adaptive cruise control system

A sophisticated follow-to-stop, radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system is now available on both GTC and GTC Speed. It uses a long-range radar sensor, mounted in the lower front grille, to monitor the road ahead for other vehicles. When a slower moving vehicle is detected, the system automatically adjusts the throttle or brakes to maintain a 'time gap', as selected by the driver.

Detroit 2009: Kia Soul'ster Concept Brightens Our Day

Kia tried to bring some sun and fun to Detroit today with its Soul’ster concept vehicle. Its open top design and roomy interior are meant to encourage people to take the day off and enjoy themselves. Kia highlighted this “feel-good” vehicle with a stage full of eager youngsters holding up signs, one combination of which translated to “beer + taco = sun.” We don’t know what that means, but we think we agree.

The car itself was touted as an “efficient front-drive car rather than an aggressive off-roader.” The interior is designed for comfort and roominess, and features cantilevered seats that jut from the center console rather than being bolted to the floor. The rear seats fold forward to provide cargo space. Features such as the roll-up window handles, rather than being downplayed or hidden, accentuate the funky overall design.

Open-Air Concept Heats Up the Show

Distinctive design portrays style, practicality and efficiency
Kia Motors America design team delivers another high-style concept

DETROIT, Jan. 11, 2009 – Bringing a sunny beach feeling into Cobo Center on a cold day in January, Kia Motors America (KMA) arrives at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit with the Soul’ster open-air concept, a variation of the highly anticipated Soul, arriving at Kia Motors retailers this spring. With young buyers’ budgets in mind, the Soul’ster is an efficient front-drive car based on the production model Soul, recently introduced at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.
“Soul’ster delivers something new, intriguing and relevant to today’s buyers – a fun, affordable convertible for active people who like to share good times with friends,” said Tom Kearns, chief designer, KMA. “Defying categorization and providing utility and practicality, the Soul’ster exhibits distinctive design cues and satisfies multiple consumer needs.”

Stylin’ Soul’r Yellow Design
A two-door concept with roadster roots, the brightly colored Soul’r yellow Soul’ster projects a hip industrial look with screw borders, reminiscent of a rivet design found on a fighter jet. The windshield is shortened for a sportier and hunkered down appearance. A two-piece top enables passengers to expose the front and back seating areas independently, using elbow-grease technology. The roll bar serves a dual purpose and includes a place for the slider tracks, while providing protection not found in traditional convertibles.

With a unique face, Soul’ster has a tough but refined character. The toughness is expressed through details like the anodized skid-pad insert, which matches the fender vents, roll bar header and wheels.

Soul’ster’s attitude incorporates lighting that shines through with an amber glow under the headlamps. The side vents, side-mirror turn signals, unique LED headlamps, fog and tail lamps incorporate blue shades.

The energetic, distinctive look carries from front to rear with dual chrome exhaust and polished aluminum exhaust tips featuring carbon-fiber interior sleeves. The large 19-inch, five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels perfect the Soul’ster’s appearance. Regardless of Soul’ster being viewed from front, back or side, it offers innovative perspectives derived from the original Soul.

Inside Out
Once inside, Soul’ster takes even more progressive variations from Soul beginning with the new four-passenger seating design, a diversion from Soul’s five-passenger arrangement, lending spacious versatility for long summer weekends. The surprisingly flexible Soul’ster provides real seating for two in the front with comfortable seating for two more adults in the back. Fold-flat passenger and rear seats combined with ample headroom make this the perfect car for social outings outdoors and on the beach with friends. Making basic features hot, its crank-up windows are a purposefully key interior design element as are the dashboard-integrated audio speakers.

Adding to the edgy design scheme, the non-floor-mounted cantilevered seats project the illusion of being suspended in space when viewed from the side allowing for increased rear legroom. Storage compartments below each of the fold-flat rear seats, offer room for myriad cargo needs. In addition to the spacious cargo area, dual storage compartments also can be found in the rear and underneath the cargo hold area.

All Revved Up
With young buyers in mind, Soul’ster offers an agile, smooth and spirited ride. As with its Soul cousin, Soul’ster’s can be made available with a myriad of engine choices depending upon each market’s needs. A 1.6-liter, four-cylinder engine is mated to a five-speed manual transmission, which produces approximately 120 horsepower. For those looking for a little more power, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine is available with either the five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission, producing approximately 140 horsepower. Fuel economy for both engines is estimated at 30 or more miles per gallon. Other markets might choose the 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 124 horsepower or a 1.6-liter turbodiesel.
