Sometimes, a slight refresh can be a big step forward for an automaker. Take this new 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, for example. Parent company Chrysler really needs to prove that it can make attractive, fuel-friendly, good-quality vehicles, otherwise the automaker will indeed have a tough time staying afloat over the next year. And from the looks of the new Grand, we don't think it's going to disappoint.
It's not hard to see that the new exterior styling takes a lot of cues from the smaller Dodge Journey crossover. The flattened roofline, short rear stack, and crooked smile fascia are all seen here on the Jeep, but with a seven-slat grille treatment. Behind that grille, two engines will be offered for American customers: a 3.6-liter V-8 producing 280 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, or the lovely 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 with 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. No word yet if a CRD or SRT8 model will make their ways into showrooms.
The big story here is how Chrysler engineers managed to improve the Jeep's on-road and off-road performance at the same time. The new structure is stiffer than the last model, and we're told that the ride quality is supposed to be better than a BMW X5, but no off-road capability has been hindered. In fact, there is a new Quadra Lift air suspension which allows the driver to raise the overall ground clearance up to 11.1 inches. Additionally, the suspension can be lowered, and even just by looking at the photo, we can see that this is a lot like what Land Rover is doing on their range of SUVs.
