Road Test: 2009 Toyota Venza

When any manufacturer, but particularly an industry titan like Toyota, rolls out a new vehicle that they say is “in a new class”, well, the hairs on any journalist’s neck stand up a bit. That was certainly the case as we listened to Toyota’s executives and engineers roll out the new Venza. But after a couple of days of driving it, talking to Toyota about it, and reviewing the data, we think they have a point. It’s a subtle point, but a point nonetheless.

You’ll notice that so far we haven’t said what the Venza “is”. We haven’t put it in a category. Before we discuss the category the vehicle belongs in, we invite you to do the same experiment we performed with some of our colleagues at the launch. Take a good look at the pictures of the Venza. What would you say this is? Just for fun, make a mental note of that, so you can compare your reaction to what a group of journalists said in response to the same question.

Of course, at some level it really doesn’t matter how the Venza (or any other vehicle) is categorized. The problem with categorization is that is makes it hard to see new things. If the iPhone is just a “cell phone” then it is hard to understand how different it is. A rational person might note that the world hardly needs its 829th cell phone and move on. But if you have an iPhone or have played with one, you know how vastly different it is and you know it isn’t just a cell phone. The category no longer matters when you’ve experienced reality.

And the reality of this Toyota is rather appealing, if you’re in the target market, because the Venza actually breaks with Toyota tradition in some fairly important ways.

Not Your Mother’s Toyota

Let’s start with driving dynamics. Just let that phrase wash over you for a moment. We’re at the start of a Toyota road test and we’re talking driving dynamics, rather than leaving it ‘til the end where hopefully no one will notice. At the opening launch dinner, Toyota execs brought up the need for good steering feel—without prompting. We almost passed out. Always a serious and sincere company, Toyota has made a serious and sincere effort to make the Venza fun to drive.

We took a V6 Venza AWD around a 20-mile loop of Pennsylvania mountain twisties at pretty close to full chat and came away impressed. First off, roll control is quite good. Actually, a lot of taller vehicles have some pretty hefty anti-roll bars attached so that may not seem exceptional, but there are several things to like about the Venza in this department. Unlike many SUVs, the Venza stays fairly flat as you push it (in contrast to, say, a Range Rover which initially resists roll, but as the cornering forces rise can’t resist tilting more and more). To maintain a decent ride, we noticed that the Toyota has only moderate roll damping (the BMW M3 takes a similar approach) but switchbacks are handled well, with minimal sloppiness.

The Venza’s handling is also nicely balanced front to rear—though it does tend towards understeer—and it feels happy carving through curves. Since the Toyota is lower and lighter than most SUVs or crossovers, you can feel physics helping (or at least not hurting). Let's be clear though, the overall sense given by the Venza is that it is well-mannered, not that it is exciting or involving.

We also drove FWD Venzas, with both the I-4 and V-6 engines, which handle in much the same way as the AWD model. The I-4 feels a little lighter, affecting the ride quality more than handling, with the V-6s being a little smoother. The FWD vehicles want to understeer just a tad more than the AWD, but one would have to drive them back-to-back to notice.

Venza’s ride quality is pleasantly firm, with large swoops and bumps being tracked very well. If Michigan or New York residents ever find out how smooth southwestern Pennsylvania roads are, there will be a riot. As a result, we can’t be sure about how the Venza handles the tragedy of typical urban roads. We did run two of our testers onto the shoulder multiple times in search of fragmented pavement and noticed very little ride harshness, which bodes well for commuter use on patchier pavement.

Performance is more than acceptable as well. The 268 hp V-6 feels strong and unstressed even in low-altitude mountains with a couple of passengers on board. Toyota has done some fine work on the six-speed transmission to make its shift points different for uphill or downhill runs, and we liked the relative lack of hunting for gears.

But Will It Do the MPG Dance?

The Venza’s V-6 is a fine engine, but with fuel economy on everyone’s mind, the I-4 is the big news. This new four cylinder is the key to Toyota’s intent of creating a vehicle that breaks with SUV and crossover tradition in fuel mileage. And, it does deliver better fuel mileage, as you would expect. Toyota estimates that EPA ratings for the I-4 will be 21 city and 29 highway in FWD form (take off 1 mpg for AWD), and the V-6 should come in at 19/26.

Whether 21/29 is enough better to capture buyer’s attention will remain to be seen. In all the hysteria of $4 gasoline consumer expectations about gas mileage have skyrocketed. While 24-25 mpg combined is actually a pretty good number, we suspect it will only inspire folks who are actually in showrooms or on the web comparing what is possible. Breaking through the 30 mpg barrier will await a possible hybrid version. Toyota won’t say a hybrid is coming, but the Venza is derived from the same architecture as the Camry, and there is a Camry hybrid, so it isn’t hard to imagine a Venza hybrid in a few years.

For 21/29 mileage to seem desirable, you also have to consider how the 2.7L drives. With 182 hp and 182 lb.-ft. of torque pulling 3760 lb., the numbers don’t seem especially impressive. But 2.7L is a big four and relative to the V-6, is only down on torque about 10 percent at 2500 rpm. The result is that the I-4 feels strong and seems completely adequate for most normal driving. If you love a strong engine or you need the towing capacity (3500 lb for the V-6 vs. 2500 for the I-4), the V-6 will, however, be the engine of choice.

That’s A Toyota?

The second area where the Venza departs from Toyota tradition is in its design. Before our drive we grabbed a cup of coffee in a vain attempt to overcome a time zone shift, and stumbled, half-asleep, over to the technical presentation. On the way, Toyota had set up a Venza, and it was our first sight of the vehicle. Honestly, our first thought was “what the heck is some new Infiniti doing here?” Somewhere in our intuition, the Venza clearly registers differently than Toyotas of the past.

Our second thought was “that looks pretty sharp.” Beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course, but we’d say the majority opinion at the launch was that the exterior of the Venza was very well executed. Almost every angle of the vehicle looks carefully shaped.

Interior materials are similarly attractive and definitely not grabbed at random from the Toyota parts bin. We think this is a big step forward, as Japanese interiors over the past years have slipped behind not only the European but often the Americans.

More important than how the design looks though, is how it “reads”.” Is the Venza big or small? Rugged or stylish? Youthful or conservative? In these times of shifting automotive priorities and tastes, these factors will probably have a lot to do with whether the Toyota succeeds and whether it appeals to you.

And that read is pretty hard to tell from pictures, one has to see it in person. We noticed that the Venza doesn’t come off as an SUV, being a bit too low and sleek. It could almost pass for a station wagon, except that it seems more stylish and muscular than most sedan-derived wagons. It doesn’t look tall, like some crossovers, despite having 8 inches of ground clearance. It is basically the same length as a Camry, so it doesn’t seem small, but it isn’t big either. Frankly, if you want a true four-passenger vehicle that’s practical and looks politically correct, but not so boring, conservative, or downscale as a sedan or hatchback, we think the Venza will seem “just right” (apologies to Goldilocks).

Practical Matters

Of course, for all the talk of the Venza being different from past products, we shouldn’t forget that it is in fact a Toyota. That means that some serious thought has been put into passenger comfort, ergonomics and features.

Seat comfort in the Venza is very good, with nicely firm, reasonably cosseting cushions. The fabric is attractive and substantial enough that one doesn’t have to opt for leather to get a decent seat.

Toyota’s engineers have put an impressive effort into the ingress and egress aspects of the Venza. The seat height has been optimized to use minimum force from your legs. Engineers put force sensors on real human legs and found the height that minimized muscular output. Any higher or lower seat and it would take more effort to get in or out. No kidding. We tried it and it seemed to work. They also worked on the sill shape to make entry/exit easier and cleaner.
This seat height, coupled with ample glass area, makes sightlines pretty good. The A-pillar intrudes a bit in the front, and some will want an even taller vehicle, but the Venza will suit many drivers who place a premium on visibility.

The rear seat is also well done, placed farther rearward than in a sedan like a Camry, and giving the Venza excellent rear legroom. The slight higher than normal roof, along with a flat roofline, allows for excellent headroom. The two-panel sunroof also increases rear headroom with the sunshade open, because there is no headliner in the second row.

With 34.4 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row seats, the Venza has just average cargo capacity when compared with crossovers. But compared with a sedan, the Venza has the big advantage of wagon-style load area.

Available option packages deliver most modern gizmos. Two newish options on offer are automatic high beam headlights and Bluetooth music streaming. Even one doesn’t get the rather mediocre JBL Synthesis surround sound system with Bluetooth streaming, there is an auxiliary in jack for your iPod or other music player (but no interface that integrates with the in-dash display).

Pricing for the Venza starts at $25,975 for the four-cylinder FWD version. At the other end of the spectrum, the V-6 AWD has an MSRP of $29,250. See the NextAutos Buyer’s Guide for more details on options and pricing.

So What the Heck Is It?

By now you may think we’ve forgotten our little experiment (what do you think the Venza is?); we haven’t. Here’s what our informal poll of journalists at the Venza launch said:

14% -- “It’s a wagon”
35% -- “It’s sort of a wagon, but not exactly”
42% -- “It’s a crossover – whatever that is”
9% -- “It’s a car”

We think it doesn’t really matter. One guy summed it well: “This is a vehicle I could actually see myself buying”. We can see a lot of people saying that.

The V-6 comes out in December, followed by the four cylinder in January.

See the NextAutos Buyer’s Guide for more details on our experience with the Venza, options and pricing.

First Look: 2011 Buick Regal

For all of you (ourselves included) who have lusted after the Opel Insignia, it looks like we'll finally have the chance to see what the fuss is all about. As part of General Motors' strategy to build up the Buick brand beyond its LaCrosse, Enclave, and (aging) Lucerne models, the 2011 Regal will be arriving on our shores next year, available only with four-cylinder engines and front-wheel drive.

Initially, just the naturally aspirated Regal will be available, packing GM's trusty 2.4-liter, direct-injected four which produces 182 horsepower and is good for 30 miles per gallon on the highway. In the late summer of 2010, however, a model with the Ecotec 2.0-liter, 220-horsepower engine will roll out, mated to an all-new Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) which allows the driver to change the suspension settings between Normal, Tour, and Sport modes. Both engines will be mated to six-speed automatic transmissions.

The Regal will come standard with many premium features, like heated, leather seats, Bluetooth, XM satellite radio, OnStar, and eighteen-inch wheels (or nineteens with the IDCS system). That, combined with the sleek styling of the Euro Insignia, should make the Regal a pretty fierce competitor for upmarket Ford Fusions.

No word on pricing has been released at this time, but we'll keep you posted. Stay tuned for more details when this car makes its official reveal at next month's Los Angeles Auto Show. In the meantime, click through the post to read GM's official press release.

THE 2011 REGAL: A BUICK BRED ON THE AUTOBAHN

Sport Sedan Blends Sleek Design with European Road Manners for Great Driving

QUICK FACTS

    * A new midsize Buick sport sedan with a European-bred driving experience
    * On sale in the second quarter of 2010
    * Based on the award-winning Opel Insignia and available now as a Regal in China
    * Modern, sleek design with great attention to detail and excellent build quality
    * Efficient, four-cylinder/six-speed powertrain with 30 mpg (est.)
    * Turbocharged model available in summer 2010
    * Driver-selectable Interactive Drive Control System available in summer 2010
    * Available rear-seat thorax air bags

    * Standard 18-inch wheels, leather and heated front seats, XM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth and OnStar.

LOS ANGELES – On Thursday Buick will reveal the 2011 Regal sport sedan to customers in the L.A. area. Armed with turbocharged horsepower, a driver-selectable suspension system and a firm, European-tuned chassis, it delivers a driving experience that rivals the best import sport sedans in the segment.

"The 2011 Buick Regal is like nothing you've ever experienced from this brand," said Susan Docherty, general manager of Buick GMC. "The Regal is the next chapter in Buick's transformation and will expand the portfolio to include a sport sedan."

The new Regal arrives in the second quarter of 2010, with its sights aimed squarely on competitors like the Acura TSX and Volvo S60. It has a longer wheelbase and greater trunk volume than those vehicles, along with standard features – including a six-speed automatic transmission, 18-inch wheels and OnStar – that aren't offered standard on either competitor.

The Regal's development is rooted in Germany, where the globally led engineering team created the award-winning Opel Insignia – the 2009 European Car of the Year. The Insignia has garnered more than 31 prestigious awards and is the best-selling midsize sedan in Europe. Regal will bring all of Insignia's award-winning design, technology and European-inspired performance capabilities to the American market.

The Regal has already been a success on another continent, in China. It went on sale in December 2008 and more than 64,000 Regals have been sold there. Enthusiastic customers cite its sculpted, flowing design and responsive performance as the top reasons for purchase.

Regal at a glance

Regal will initially be offered in premium CXL trim only, with additional trim levels to be offered in the 2012 model year. The well-equipped Regal CXL includes the following as standard or available equipment:

    * Standard 2.4L Ecotec direct injected engine rated at an estimated 182 horsepower (136 kW)
    * Available 2.0L Ecotec turbocharged and direct injected engine rated at an estimated 220 horsepower (164 kW) – available late-summer 2010
    * Both engines have a six-speed automatic transmission standard with driver-shifting control
    * Estimated 30 mpg on the highway with the 2.4L and 29 mpg highway with the 2.0L turbo engine
    * MacPherson strut front suspension and four-link independent rear suspension
    * All-new Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) available with the 2.0L turbo, offering driver-selectable suspension settings and automatic driver suspension setting adaptability
    * Four-wheel disc brakes with four-channel anti-lock braking system, brake assist and electronic parking brake
    * Standard StabiliTrak stability control system and full-function traction control
    * Standard dual-stage frontal air bags, side-curtain air bags and pedal-release system; rear-seat thorax air bags available
    * Available navigation system, Harmon Kardon sound system, internal flash drive (1GB), hard drive with 10GB for music and USB port
    * Standard 18-inch wheels (19-inch wheels standard with IDCS)
    * Standard 12-way power, leather and heated driver seat; leather and heated passenger front seat; Bluetooth capability; XM Satellite Radio and OnStar.

Design story

The Regal's sleek design blends the sweeping silhouette and proportions of a coupe in a progressive package that suggests motion from all angles. Great attention to detail complements that aggressive styling, with tailored applications of Buick's signature design cues, such as the waterfall grille, select use of chrome trim and superior fit and finish of the exterior panels.

"Regal is all about great proportions," said John Cafaro, design director, passenger car. "For example, with the fenders flared to wrap around the tires. It's an aggressive stance that people aren't used to seeing in recent Buicks."

The car's performance-oriented spirit is also conveyed in sleek, sculpted body-side detail and aggressive headlamps that further suggest motion. At the rear, an abbreviated deck and tucked-in body panels are the hallmarks of a contemporary sport sedan, with bold taillamps and their intricate lighting elements reinforcing Regal's attention to detail. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard.

The sweeping design motif carries over to the interior, where the side panels flow uninterrupted into the instrument panel. The instruments have the look of expensive sport timepieces and are lit with ice-blue LED lights. The center stack, housing the climate and "infotainment" controls, was designed to allow for a lower, driver-centric instrument panel profile. Features such as a thick-rimmed, leather-wrapped steering wheel and firm, highly bolstered and leather-covered seats also support the sport-oriented driving experience.

"There is great design harmony between the exterior and interior," said Cafaro. "The feeling of flow and motion carries through in an engaging manner that makes you want to take the Regal out to your favorite twisting road to see what it can do."

A breakthrough interior

The Regal's finely crafted, sporty and well-appointed interior builds on the exceptional attention to detail found in the Enclave and LaCrosse, blending signature styling cues with contemporary sport sedan aesthetics.

Regal's firm, highly bolstered seats were benchmarked against the top import competitors for comfort and support, while a standard flow-through center console offers plenty of storage for passengers in the front and back.

Smart applications of technology are also hallmarks of the Regal, including details such as a multi-function controller on the center console for operation of the audio system, navigation system and the Bluetooth phone. The faceplate for the "infotainment" screen is set at a 30-degree angle to contribute to the car's flowing interior design.

A new era in Buick design is also seen in the satin metallic, piano black and new, Kibo-patterned interior trim materials. Kibo is a rich, dark, progressively grained wood that lends an international flair to the Regal.

Under the hood

Unique with its all-four-cylinder powertrain, the Regal relies on the excellent horsepower-per-liter ratio of the Ecotec engine family to deliver smart, on-demand performance that is also very efficient.

Both the standard 2.4L engine and the available 2.0L turbo use direct injection technology to optimize performance, reduce emissions and maximize fuel efficiency. The 2.4L is the same engine offered in the Buick LaCrosse, but in the smaller, lighter Regal, it delivers more agile performance. The 2.0L turbo cements the sport sedan credibility of the Regal, with on-demand power comparable to a V-6, but the inherent efficiency of a four-cylinder. To ensure responsive power across the rpm range, the 2.0L turbo uses a twin-scroll turbocharger that builds power quickly at lower rpm.

Distinct, uniquely calibrated six-speed automatic transmissions are paired with each engine. Both offer driver shift control that enhances the sporty driving feel of the Regal.

Driving experience

The chassis and structural systems were developed in Germany and give the Regal the handling and dynamics of a premium European sport sedan, as well as the quiet, refined ride and road manners expected of a Buick. The body structure is one of the most rigid in the segment, which is approximately 25-percent stiffer than the previous Regal. This solid structure supports more precise suspension tuning and a quieter ride.

A relatively long wheelbase of 107.8 inches (2738 mm) gives the Regal refined, well-balanced vehicle dynamics and supports comfortable ride tuning. Additionally, an independent MacPherson strut-type front suspension with single-path mountings and hydraulic ride bushings; a four-link independent rear suspension; hydraulic rack-and-pinion steering; and optimized four-wheel disc brakes are optimized to the capability of the individual powertrains and tailored to the expected use by drivers. Models equipped with the 2.0L turbo engine, for example, feature larger brakes.

Latest-generation electronic stability control (ESC or StabiliTrak), anti-lock brake system (ABS), and traction control system (TCS) are standard with Buick's innovative, Interactive Drive Control System (IDCS) real-time damping system offered on models equipped with the 2.0L turbo powertrain.

Interactive Drive Control System

Regal's Interactive Drive Control System chassis technology (available on models with the available 2.0L turbo engine) offers enhanced vehicle stability and greater driving safety. It is designed to change the personality of the car based on the personality of the driver. A sophisticated driving mode control module continually monitors driving style utilizing yaw rate, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, steering wheel, throttle and vehicle speed. It defines the dynamic vehicle state, including acceleration, braking and cornering, to optimize chassis reactions. It also executes all of the IDCS driver selections.

All four dampers are electronically controlled and continuously adapt within milliseconds to the prevailing road conditions, vehicle movements and individual driving style. Chassis settings are adjustable by the driver, with Normal, Tour and Sport settings.

IDCS allows the driver to choose between three different operating modes that change the suspension settings, throttle response, shift pattern and steering sensitivity through the variable effort steering system. The three modes deliver three types of experiences:

    * Normal – balanced and optimized for all driving situations
    * Tour – optimized for comfort and relaxed driving on long journeys
    * Sport – optimized for road holding; enthusiast driving .

Selecting "Sport" mode optimizes the car for dynamic driving, tightening the suspension and steering response and speeding up the reaction of the automatic transmission. The "Tour" mode is optimal for long-distance cruising or rough road conditions, providing an increase in comfort. "Normal" or Default Mode is the perfect all-around setting for daily commuting and city traffic. The other major benefit of Interactive Drive Control is that it automatically adapts Regal's performance settings to individual driving styles. When a driver begins to drive more aggressively it will tighten the suspension and increase steering effort and change to a more aggressive throttle response. When the vehicle senses that the driver is doing relaxed cruising, it adjusts settings for rolling smoothness and comfort.

Apart from a more rewarding driving experience, IDCS also offers safety benefits in emergency situations. For example, if an obstacle must be avoided when the car is in Tour mode, various chassis sensors convey this to the DMC and the dampers are stiffened within milliseconds, delivering greater body control.

First Look: 2010 Porsche Boxster Spyder

Oh, the Porsche Boxster. As we recently reaffirmed in our latest comparison test, the little two-seat roadster from Porsche is one of our favorite topless road cars, and now there's more to love. The much-anticipated Boxster Spyder won't make its official debut until December 2nd at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but the details and images have already leaked out ahead of time.

This lightweight, hardcore version of the Boxster starts with the well-received 3.4-liter, direct-injection flat-six engine, though power has been increased by 10 horsepower for a new total of 320. Combined with Porsche's PDK gearbox and Sport Chrono package, the Spyder will jaunt from a stand-still to 60 miles per hour in just 4.6 seconds and will do 166 mph flat out (with the roof off, of course). "Roof," though, is a figurative term with the Spyder, as the Boxster's standard folding lid has been replaced with a lightweight soft top that acts as more of a sunshade than anything else.

Other modifications include a special sport suspension which lowers the ride height by twenty millimeters, a standard limited-slip differential, and exclusive wheels. Aluminum door skins and lightweight interior door panels (from the GT3 RS) aid in reducing the Spyder's weight by 176 pounds over the standard Boxster S, and with a lower center of gravity, we're confident in saying that this thing will be well-suited for hot laps at your local track.

Look for the Boxster Spyder to hit U.S. showrooms in February of 2010 with a starting MSRP of $61,200. Click through the post to read the official press release from Porsche.

Porsche's newest entry will be the lightest in its line-up

ATLANTA – November 5, 2009 – Weighing in at just 2,811 lbs., the new 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder will be the lightest Porsche available – from a company known for lightweight, proficient sports cars. This new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the sports car – agile, powerful, open and efficient. This third Boxster model will join the Boxster and Boxster S and will make its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, December 2, 2009.

The newest member of the Boxster family stands out from the other versions of Porsche's mid-engined roadster. Its low-slung, lightweight soft top – when closed – extends far to the rear to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. This top, when combined with extra-low side windows and two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, provides the Boxster Spyder with a sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder: Light, Powerful, Purist Roadster to be Introduced at Los Angeles Auto Show

The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 horsepower (hp), 10 hp more than the Boxster S. The combination of 10 more hp and 176 pounds less weight than the award-winning Boxster S, plus an all-new sport suspension that lowers the Boxster Spyder 20 mm, a lower center of gravity, a standard limited slip differential, and exclusive wheels provides the kind of driving dynamics that back up the unique look. Aluminum door skins and lightweight interior door panels from the 911 GT3 RS contribute to the weight reduction.

When equipped with Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Top track speed is 166 mph – with the roof open.

Fundamentally, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder and RS 60 of the Fifties and Sixties, all sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept. Low weight and supreme agility combine to provide outstanding driving pleasure.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche produced limited editions of the Boxster bearing the additional name Spyder, honoring the 550 and RS 60. In contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, but specially developed and upgraded production model as compared with the Boxster and Boxster S.

2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder: Light, Powerful, Purist Roadster to be Introduced at Los Angeles Auto Show

The 2011 Boxster Spyder goes on sale February 2010. U.S. pricing is $61,200.

Hyundai Rolls Out The Genesis Coupe R-Spec at SEMA, Dealerships

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec, which we've been eagerly awaiting since the launch of the 2010 Genesis Coupe, will debut at SEMA and, more importantly, is now arriving at dealerships.

The tuner-friendly R-Spec deletes all the convenience features we don't want or need, giving drivers a lighter, less expensive vehicle ($23,750 MSRP). It also features the Track model perfomance equipment, such as a tuned suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels with summer tires, Brembo brakes, and a Torsen LSD. It also gets a set of front strut camber adjustment bolts.

And, of course, it only comes with a six-speed manual transmission. See? Hyundai gets it.

Scroll down for the official press release.

production R-Spec to Debut at the 2009 SEMA Show in Las Vegas

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., oct. 27, 2009 - The Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec, the perfect blank canvas for tuners, priced at $23,750 is beginning to arrive at dealerships across the country. R-Spec takes the core performance equipment from the 2.0T Track model and eliminates non-essential convenience equipment to reduce both cost and weight. The Genesis Coupe 2.0T R-Spec - the first production R-Spec model to arrive in the U.S. - will make its world debut at the Hyundai booth at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in the Las Vegas Convention Center from November 3 - 6 (Booth # 24387).

The R-Spec allows enthusiasts to tune their own car to their desired specifications. R-Spec provides genuine track-readiness and powertrain scalability in an affordable model. The R-Spec adds core Track model performance equipment to the most affordable 2.0T model, such as: Track-tuned suspension, 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with performance Summer tires, Brembo® braking system, Torsen® limited-slip differential and R-Spec badging.

In a special nod to tuners, R-Spec will also receive a set of front strut camber adjustment bolts (dealer installation - optional for customer to install) to further enhance initial turn-in and handling response. To reduce both cost and weight, the R-Spec eliminates some non-essential convenience equipment such as: Bluetooth®, automatic headlights, cruise control, trip computer, chrome interior accents and steering wheel audio controls. Genesis Coupe R-Spec is priced $3,000 less than the 2.0T Track model, leaving tuners with extra cash for their own choice of aftermarket performance upgrades. Appropriately, R-Spec will be available in three exteriors colors most common among international racing teams: Karussell White, Bathurst Black and Tsukuba Red. R-Spec comes with manual transmission only.

R-Spec equipment includes:

· 2.0-liter low-pressure turbocharged intercooled four-cylinder engine with dual continuously variable valve timing delivering 210 hp, 30 mpg EPA highway rating and a top speed of 137 mph

· 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission

· Electronic Stability Control with Traction control, ABS, Electronic Brake-Force Distribution and Brake Assist

· 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels with staggered-width high-performance summer-compound Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires (225/40YR19 front, 245/40YR19 rear)

· Brembo® braking system with 13.4-inch ventilated front rotors, 42mm four-piston fixed front calipers (red), 13.0-inch ventilated rear rotors, 32mm+28mm four-piston fixed rear calipers (red)

· R-Spec badging

· Tire Pressure Monitoring System

First Look: 2011 Lexus LFA Is A High-Revving, High-Dollar Supercar

After many, many rounds of spy shots, the final details and production images have been released of the much-anticipated Lexus LFA supercar, which will have a limited production run of 500 units and will be sold for -- get ready -- $375,000. (Start saving your pennies.)

The details on this thing are nothing short of supercar stock, though its front-engine, rear-drive configuration is a change of pace from the Audis and Lambos that we've learned to love. Still, having 560 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque is nothing to frown at, especially in a car that only weighs 3263 pounds and revs up to a screaming redline of 9000 rpm. 0-62 miles per hour? 3.7 seconds. Top speed? 202 mph. We're ready for some track time.

If you have the money, you can put an LFA in your garage starting in early 2011 and take it Nissan GT-R hunting. Click through the post for the full press release and scroll through our gallery of images above to see the LFA from all angles.

Tokyo, October 21, 2009 - Lexus announces today the official launch of the LFA, a two-seat supercar scheduled to go into production at the end of 2010 as the pinnacle of the Lexus "F" premium sports car series. Pre-sales start today.
Ultra-responsive and extremely stable even when taken to the edge, the LFA creates a sense of reassurance that opens up a new world of driving emotion, exhilarating the senses to move the driver in more ways than one.
The LFA combines high output, superb chassis design and meticulous aerodynamics to achieve instantaneous total-vehicle response characterized by high-rev, seamless acceleration echoed by a self-defining resonance from its 4.8-liter V10.
Only 500 units of the LFA are to be produced and sold worldwide.
A prototype of the LFA is now on display at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show, which is open to the general public from October 24 to November 4 at Makuhari Messe in Makuhari, Chiba Prefecture.
1. Packaging brings out the most in fundamental performance
Strong and light
The newly developed 4.8-liter V10 engine boasts exceptional power, while lightweight materials (aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy and titanium alloy) and a very compact size (smaller than a conventional V8) allows for optimal weight distribution and an exceptional power-to-weight ratio.
Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) cabin enhances high body-rigidity and reduces weight. This unique cabin is 100kg lighter than a comparable aluminum cabin. Detailed analysis and precise matching of CFRP materials allows for high rigidity and low weight. LFA CFRP production technology, including unique CFRP-to-metal joining, was completely developed by Lexus.
Balanced
Relatively higher weight components such as the engine and transmission are placed within the wheelbase. A low center of gravity is made possible by the use of dry sump lubrication1, along with placing peripheral components (oil pump, water pump) behind the engine. Furthermore, optimal placement of the transmission and the fuel tank in front of the rear axle adds to this application of centralized mass. This minimizes weight shift during cornering and contributes to outstanding performance and stability. Lighter weight components, like the radiator and electric fans, are placed behind the rear axle.
Combined with a front-engine and rear-wheel-drive configuration, the short, wide and low body allows the LFA to achieve its target front-to-rear weight distribution of 48:52.
Driver-centered
The driver's seat is positioned near the LFA's center of gravity. The centralized seating concept (with the seat between the front and rear axles and closer to the left–right center) is made possible by the use of a rear transaxle and vertically stacked torque tube and exhaust pipes reducing the width of the center tunnel. The driver placement is aimed to provide maximum car-to-driver feedback, especially under sport or high G-force driving conditions.
2. Emotive performance embodies an extraordinary driving experience
High–rev engine
Titanium valves, ultra–light weight rocker arms with a diamond–like coating and a fully integrated lower crankcase that reduces pumping losses at high RPMs combine to provide the driver with overwhelming acceleration right up to the 9,000rpm redline. The LFA's purpose-built V10 delivers 90% of its peak torque between 3,700rpm and 9,000rpm.
Precise Response
Independent, electronically controlled throttle bodies ensure precise air-feed to each of the 10 cylinders, enabling immediate engine response from the accelerator pedal. The engine response time is approximately half the normal response time of a single-throttle valve.
The six-speed ASG transmission features heavy-duty synchronizer rings and a newly developed gearshift actuator, providing the driver with a very direct shift feel. Four selectable driving modes and a seven-stage shift-speed selector that results in upshift speeds down to 0.2 seconds provide a higher level of driver control.
Track-sized high-performance (Carbon Ceramic) CCM brake discs and Electronically Controlled Braking system generate ultra-powerful yet stable braking.
Responsive handling and engaging dynamics
The very light and rigid CFRP cabin, combined with a front double-wishbone suspension and a rear multilink suspension, result in a very stable, controlled ride. Detailed aerodynamic engineering results in elements such as a flat underbody, a diffuser and a speed-controlled rear wing, which allows precise vehicle response at all vehicle speeds, thus creating unity between driver and machine.
Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management integrates numerous vehicle dynamic functions that provide a high level of vehicle stability and preventative safety without interfering with the driver's intentions, especially when sport driving.
Exciting engine sound and L-finesse2 design
Equal-length exhaust manifolds combined with an equal-length dual exhaust system routed through a multistage titanium main muffler fine tunes the exhaust note.
An acoustically tuned surge tank linked to 10 individual throttle bodies creates a powerful induction sound. The coordination of intake and exhaust sounds overlap at various RPMs to create a unique, exciting and inspired soundtrack.
The exterior design includes carefully tuned aerodynamics and airflow management. The use of CFRP, in addition to strength and weight advantages, frees up the design of the exterior panels allowing a fresh supercar L-finesse design. The interior design combines state-of-the-art instrument-panel design and technology, along with a variety of custom-tailored interior trim packages to suit the most discerning driver.

First Look: 2011 Nissan GT-R Is More Of The Same, Only Slightly Different

The Nissan GT-R isn't an old car, and we don't have many complaints about Godzilla's mannerisms, but nonetheless, some small, yet crucial, tweaks have been made to the GT-R for the 2010 model year.

Visually, there's nothing terribly new to speak of, save the inclusion of rear diffuser cooling ducts which now come standard across the GT-R range. On top of that, the rear suspension brushings have been stiffened slightly, and the front springs and shocks have been tweaked, as well. While this might not seem like much, hardcore GT-R drivers will definitely notice these improvements on the track.

Japanese citizens can head to dealerships on December 7th to pick up their new GT-Rs. As for us, we'll have to wait until next spring. Click through the post for the full details.

Nissan Releases New-Spec Nissan GT-R

YOKOHAMA (Oct. 21, 2009) - Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the release of the latest version of the Nissan GT-R, which goes on sale on December 7th at Nissan dealers nationwide in Japan. The updated GT-R receives a number of enhancements, including a revised navigation system, recalibrated suspension settings and an improved-flow catalyst system. It is scheduled to go on sale in other global markets beginning next spring.

Since its introduction in the Japanese market in December 2007, the Nissan GT-R has gone through continuous evolution, remaining on the cutting-edge of multi-dimensional performance. The GT-R has also been acclaimed globally, winning more than 50 top awards in various categories since launch. Nissan also supports GT-R owners with exceptional after-sales service.

The latest revisions to GT-R include a new HDD-based CARWINGS navigation system with enhanced entertainment functions. A USB port with iPod®*1 connectivity allows the driver and passengers to enjoy their favorite music in the car, creating an even more pleasant interior environment. *2

In addition, the GT-R's suspension has been retuned to offer enhanced, premium quality ride comfort, while still providing the driver with a feeling of direct contact with the road surface. The accuracy of the front shock absorbers and springs has been increased and the stiffness of rear suspension radius rod bushings has been strengthened. Rear diffusers with cooling ducts, previously available only on the GT-R SpecV, have been expanded to non-SpecV models, improving cooling performance around the rear floor area.

The exclusive Nissan GT-R SpecV models receive revised rear shock absorber settings, enhancing the characteristic combination of supple ride comfort and flat, predictable handling. In conjunction with this change, SpecV now comes standard with Dunlop tires. The previously standard Bridgestone tires are available as a factory-installed option.

Finally, both the Nissan GT-R and GT-R SpecV achieve improved low- and mid-range engine response, thanks to newly adopted hexagonal meshed catalyst cells that reduce ventilation/airflow resistance.
Nationwide MSRP Pricing in Japan (including consumption tax)

Drivetrain Engine Grade Transmission Price (yen)
4WD VR38DETT GT-R GR6 dual clutch
transmission 8,610,000 ☆Model in photo
GT-R Black edition 8,820,000
GT-R Premium edition 9,240,000
GT-R SpecV 15,750,000

* SpecV goes on sale at seven specially selected Nissan dealers throughout Japan.
*1 iPod is a trademark of Apple Computer, Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries.
*2 May not be applicable in selected countries.

Tokyo Preview: Lotus Exige Scura Is Even More Potent

Lotus will unveil a limited-production version of the Lotus Exige, called the Exige Scura (Exige Stealth in Japan), at the Tokyo Motor show later this week. The matte black, carbon fiber-themed Exige receives performance enhancements while shedding weight to make this already light and potent Exige S even more formidable.

The 256-horsepower, 1.8-liter supercharged engine (the same one in the Exige Cup 260) propels the Exige Scura from 0-62 in 4.1 seconds, then on to a top speed of about 152 miles per hour. To keep it on the ground, its aerodynamic package, made extensively of carbon fiber for low weight, providing almost 95 pounds of downforce at 100 miles per hour.

What makes the Lotus Exige Scura truly special are its evil paint job, and the fact that it is limited to only 35 units globally. Check the warranty on the paint job before you buy, though.

See it in the gallery above. The official press release follows.

Lotus Cars unveils its latest special edition - the Exige Scura, so called due to its dramatic matt black and carbon fibre theme, at the Tokyo International Motorshow on 21st of October 2009.
Translated as ‘dark’ from Italian, the name ‘Scura’ reflects the stealth character of this already fierce looking Lotus and its stunning soft-feel matt black paint finish. Limited to just 35 cars globally, this Exige evokes a desire to ‘indulge your dark side’. This is a serious looking car and enhancements to performance and a reduction in weight from the production level Exige S means that the Exige Scura demands to be driven by a serious driver.
Contrasting high gloss ‘Phantom Black’ triple stripes run the length of the car and a carbon fibre front splitter, oil cooler inlet vanes, side airscoops and rear spoiler enhance the stunning distinction between the different textures and exaggerate the tactile quality of the velvety touch to the matt black paint finish.
Luke Bennett, Director of Lotus Cars said, “The Exige Scura is a stunning vehicle which offers an adrenaline fuelled experience and is a real head-turner! Our Exige customers choose Lotus because we deliver thrilling performance and dynamic design and this special edition fits the bill on both counts.”
Continuing the dark ‘Scura’ appearance into the interior, carbon fibre is used extensively to compliment the exterior theme and reduce weight. The seats and centre console are crafted from carbon fibre and the handbrake and gear knob have a special anodized treatment which leaves the metal with an anthracite colour finish. All carbon fibre components have been beautifully finished in high-gloss clear lacquer allowing the weave to remain exposed which gives the cabin a raw and racy ambiance.
Whilst there is no doubt that this is a visually stunning car, the Exige Scura is not just about its looks – it begs to be taken on track, and its racing character encompasses poise, power and technology to make it a serious contender. Equipped with the most powerful engine in the Exige range and generating 260PS, the Exige Scura achieves a top speed of around 245 km/h and reaches 0-100 kmh in just 4.1 seconds.
Other equipment fitted as standard to boost the Exige Scura’s track credentials include:
Launch control to ensure optimum performance from a standing start
Variable slip traction control, enabling the driver to tune the car to track surface conditions and their own driving style
Ohlins 2-way adjustable dampers for personalised ride and handling characteristics
Roger Becker, Vehicle Engineering Director, highlighted the performance of the Exige Scura, “There are very few cars in the world that turn in the performance of the Exige Scura without the penalty of very high fuel consumption and emissions. As with all Lotus sportscars we offer the best of both worlds – a zero to 100 km/h time of just over 4 seconds and a CO2 figure of 199 g/km; all this is down to light weight and a strict adherence to Lotus’ core brand values.”
Considering the performance on offer, the Exige Scura boasts impressive all round fuel economy with an Official European Combined Cycle figure of 8.5 litres/100 km and 6.5 litres/100 km on the Official European Extra Urban Cycle and emissions of 199 g/km of CO2.
Orders for the ‘Lotus Exige Scura’ will be accepted from 21 October 2009 in Europe, South Korea, Australia, South Africa, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia. This special edition will be available on the same basis in Japan known as the ‘Lotus Exige Stealth’.
ENDS
The Exige Scura in more detail
Performance and enhancements;
• 0-100 kmh in 4.1 seconds and 199 g/km CO2
• Lotus Launch Control and Lotus Traction Control as standard
The Lotus Exige Scura uses the 1.8 litre supercharged and intercooled 260 PS engine from the range topping Exige Cup 260, including the lightweight flywheel and lightweight supercharger pipework. Coupled with Ohlins 2 way adjustable dampers and Eibach Springs with variable height spring platforms, unique matt black lightweight forged wheels and super sticky Yokohama A048 LTS tyres, ride and handling is as expected for a Lotus!
Lightweight carbon fibre components, including sports seats, interior centre console, front splitter, oil cooler inlet vanes, side airscoops and rear spoiler help to keep the weight to 10kg less than the Lotus Exige S (at just 925 kg).
Lotus Launch Control and Lotus Traction Control – additions recommended for track driving
Lotus Launch Control and Lotus Traction Control were originally developed for the Lotus Exige GT3 racing programme.
The launch control allows the driver to determine the number of revs they wish to use during a standing start. Having programmed that limit, the driver then holds the throttle pedal down fully and sidesteps the clutch pedal for a very quick departure from the line. The clutch damper cushions the severity of the clutch to transmission engagement to minimise the stresses to the drivetrain. The launch control allows wheel-spin until 10 km/h (6 mph) to further reduce drivetrain stress, after which the traction control assumes its duties at the defined level set by the driver.
As with launch control, the amount of traction control required can be dialled in from the driver’s seat and altered on the move to suit the characteristics of particular corners. The amount of traction control can be varied in over 30 increments from an optimum 7 percent tyre slip to completely inactive. The message display in the new instrument pack displays what degree of traction control is being currently utilised.
Suspension
To suit individual driving styles and road conditions, drivers will now be able to tune the Exige suspension with the Ohlins two-way adjustable dampers (which have 60 compression and 22 rebound settings) and ride height adjustment to reduce the ride height from 130 mm to 120 mm.
Performance, Economy and Emissions
The Lotus Exige Scura is capable of incredible track performance which and at the heart of its success is the aerodynamic package, which produces 42 kg of downforce at 160 km/h (100 mph) increasing grip and stability at higher speeds. This downforce, coupled with a top speed of around 245 km/h (152 mph) and a zero to 160 km/h (100 mph) in circa 9.9 seconds, 0 to 100 km/h in circa 4.1 seconds (0 to 60 mph in around 4 seconds), means that the Exige Scura is not only stunning to look at but a phenomenal performer too. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 8.5 l/100km and the CO2 emissions of 199 g/km.
Engine
The supercharged and intercooled engine in the Exige Scura has a maximum power output of 260 PS (257 hp) at 8000 rpm and a torque figure of 236 Nm (174 lbft) at 6000 rpm. This significant amount of extra power and torque over the production level Exige S together with the VVTL-i variable cam system ensures that there is a smooth and linear delivery of power from low engine speeds all the way to the maximum 8000 rpm (8500 rpm transient for 2 seconds). The supercharger (with a sealed-for-life internal mechanism meaning that it does not require the use of the engine’s oil) is run from the crankshaft and has an integral bypass valve for part load operation. Charge air (air under pressure from the supercharger) is cooled through an air-to-air intercooler (the air enters via the enhanced roof scoop) before being fed into the engine itself. All charge air ducting has been kept as short as possible with large diameter pipes to minimise restriction and maximise throttle response and efficiency. Four high capacity injectors and an uprated fuel pump add additional fuel under hard acceleration or continuous high speed driving – only on the track, of course!
A lightweight flywheel is fitted (giving even greater flexibility and response to the gear change), a sports-type clutch plate and heavy duty clutch cover transfer the engine power and torque to the lightweight C64 six-speed gearbox (with an aluminium casing) – with the same perfectly spaced ratios as the Exige S. An Accusump (engine oil accumulator unit) is included in the whole package as an oil reservoir back-up for extreme track use ensuring that, under those conditions, the engine oil pressure remains constant.
Recommended retail prices of the standard road specification Lotus Exige Scura
UK (MSRP):
Recommended retail price (including VAT) is £45,000 (an additional £950 is charged for on the road costs. These include delivery, PDI, first service, number plates, first registration fee, valet, 12 months Road Fund Licence and a full tank of fuel.)
Recommended retail prices of the standard road specification Lotus Exige Scura for the following markets (MSRP) (including transport, delivery, local taxes and first service but excluding registration, license plates and or a full tank of fuel):
Belgium € 61.820,--
France € 61.200,--
Italy € 61.885,--
Switzerland CHF 90.225,--
Recommended retail prices of the standard road specification Lotus Exige Scura for the following markets (MSRP) (including local taxes but excluding transport, registration, license plates and or a full tank of fuel):
Germany € 60.000,--
Recommended retail prices for other Euro Zone Countries (MSRP) (excluding local taxes, transport, registration, license plates and or a full tank of fuel):
Euro Zone € 50.420,--
Paint Warranty
The Lotus Exige Scura is painted in a ‘soft feel’ water borne matt black paint finish that is resistant to most normal forms of atmospheric attack provided the special cleaning and maintenance requirements as specified by Lotus are strictly adhered to. However due to the textured matt finish, fading or discolouration of all or part of the matt paint finish may occur during the early life of the vehicle and this is considered normal and is specifically excluded from any warranty given by Lotus. The special matt paint finish utilised on the Lotus Scura is provided with a limited warranty of the earlier of 12 months or 12,000 miles/20,000 km from the date of first registration of the vehicle. Please consult your Authorised Lotus Dealer for full details.
Official European Combined Cycle = 8.5 litres / 100 km (33.2 mpg)
Official European Extra Urban Cycle = 6.5 litres/100 km (43.5 mpg)
Official European Urban Cycle = 11.9 litre/100 km (23.7 mpg)
CO2 emissions = 199 g/km
About Lotus
The main operating subsidiary of Group Lotus plc is Lotus Cars Limited, which has two operating divisions - Lotus Engineering and Lotus Cars.

The 2010 Detroit Auto Show is only a few months away, and as manufacturers work on rolling out their latest and greatest models to dealer lots, a select group of automotive journalists are working hard to decide what vehicles the 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards should go to. From the vast selection of contenders, here are the final nominees:

Obviously, we'll have to wait until January to see which vehicles actually win, but we at Winding Road know who we're rooting for. (And we aren't telling!) In the meantime, scroll through our gallery of all the candidates, and be sure to leave a comment and let us know who you think should win, and why.

Tokyo Preview: Subaru to Showcase Hybrid Tourer Concept

Subaru will present its Hybrid Tourer Concept at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show in October.

The Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept features the automaker’s all-wheel-drive system, and a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, direct-injection engine. All mated to a hybrid drive system with a front and rear motor. The rear motor helps move the car at slow speeds without engaging the engine.

The Hybrid Tourer Concept also features an aerodynamic form, with large glass areas, and gullwing doors.

Subaru also made other announcements about the Tokyo Motor Show, including the fully electric plug-in Stella, the WRX STI Carbon, and the Eyesight pre-collision system showcased in the Exiga 2.0GT.

See it in the gallery above. Scroll down for the official press release.

Exhibition Outline of the 41st Tokyo Motor Show 2009

Tokyo, September 30, 2009 - Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced the major highlights that will be displayed at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show 2009. On the theme of ‘Take a Moment to Free Your Mind”, FHI will showcase Subaru’s efforts to integrate enjoyable and dependable driving with the global environment.

FHI will present the “SUBARU HYBRID TOURER CONCEPT”, a new proposal for the future of grand touring car that integrates environmental friendliness, driving performance, and safety at a high level. In addition, FHI will unveil the “Plug-in STELLA feat. BEAMS”. Designed in collaboration with the renowned specialty store BEAMS, the fully electric car is based on the Plug-in STELLA launched this summer in Japan. The company will also showcase a special version of Impreza WRX STI exclusively tuned for further enhancement of its sporty performance, as well as other production models such as the new Legacy. Besides showcasing these models, FHI will exhibit Subaru’s latest safety technologies, such as the “EyeSight”, an advanced driving assist system with pre-collision control using stereo camera technology.

A press conference by President Ikuo Mori is scheduled on Wednesday, October 21, at 12:10, at the Subaru booth (Center Hall).

Major exhibits

◆ SUBARU HYBRID TOURER CONCEPT (Concept car)
1. Concept
Subaru has condensed its DNA, developed over many years around the Subaru’s core technology of “Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD)” and “Horizontally-Opposed Boxer Engine”, into the integration of a luxurious and high-quality cabin atmosphere and an eye-catching sculpted body. The concept car features Subaru’s latest evolutions in handling agility, riding comfort and superior safety performance. It proposes Subaru’s vision of a future grand touring car that excels in environmental friendliness thanks to Subaru’s unique hybrid system.

2. Design and packaging
(1) Exterior
Subaru imagined wings with a feeling of freedom and confidence for driving far and wide in any environment. A luxurious and comfortable cabin, and advanced driving performance are contained within a sculpted aerodynamic form. The design features a combination of bright, open glass areas with a solid, reliable body.

(2) Interior
The original point of the ideal grand touring car is its interior design, featuring four independent and comfortably positioned seats. Passengers are enclosed within an atmosphere that provides a surpassing feeling of openness and stress-free reassurance, through the further pursuit of a human-centered philosophy, the essence of Subaru car design, and the incorporation of functions that are friendly to passengers.
・ The top of the dashboard is movable up and down to provide an optimal driving environment for the driver according to driving conditions.
・ A flat floor in the rear seat was achieved even with the implementation of AWD, for improved use and movement inside the cabin.
・ Specialized shielding is incorporated in the windshield to reduce eyestrain on the driver.
・ New leather covering developed with superior breathability and a ventilation function is used in the seats for improved comfort and texture.

3. Mechanisms
In addition to refinements to Subaru’s core technology such as Symmetrical AWD and Horizontally-Opposed Boxer Engine, further enhancements were made for improved environmental friendliness, driving performance and high safety performance by offering a next-generation power unit system and advanced safety technologies.
(1) Next-generation power unit system
2.0-liter Horizontally-Opposed direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline engine
・ The Horizontally-Opposed turbo gasoline engine, with a reputation for powerful acceleration, is combined with a direct fuel-injection system for improvements in fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, and improved torque and response in practical range. This evolution in Subaru turbo technology excels in both environmental friendliness and engine performance.
Lineartronic (CVT)
・ Lineartronic, Subaru’s new generation automatic transmission, achieves further improvements in both fuel efficiency and driving performance by reinforcing parts for use with the high-power output of a turbo engine.
Hybrid system
・ To further enhance the appeal of the Symmetrical AWD system, this unique hybrid two-motor system features a power/drive motor in the front and a drive motor in the rear.
・ At start-up and extremely low speeds when fuel efficiency is low, such as when driving the car into a garage, the rear motor is used primarily to allow driving without utilizing the power of the engine.
・ During normal driving, the front engine is primarily used. The direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline mated with the Symmetrical AWD offers a whole new, Subaru driving experience.
・ During acceleration, the rear motor assists the driving power of the engine to achieve advanced driving performance.
・ Further, when accelerating uphill, the front motor, which is normally used as a power generator, assists to drive the front axle for improved performance.
・ The implementation of a non-idling function that stops the engine when the car comes to a halt reduces unnecessary fuel consumption.
・ The use of a high-performance lithium battery is based on experience and know-how achieved with the Subaru Plug-in STELLA electric vehicle, launched this summer. This includes the use of a precise energy management system and regenerative brake controls, for improvements in excellent fuel efficiency.

<Major specifications>
Length x Width x Height: 4,630 x 1,890 x 1,420mm
Engine type: 2.0-liter Horizontally-Opposed direct fuel-injection turbo gasoline engine
Max output of Motor: 10kW (Front) / 20kW (Rear)
Transmission type: Lineartronic
Drive train: Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with 2 motors assist
Battery type: Lithium-ion battery

(2) EyeSight + (plus)
Subaru has integrated its unique driving assist system, EyeSight, with vehicle-to-vehicle and road-to-vehicle communication technology. EyeSight includes an assist collision prevention support system that uses its unique stereo camera technology to recognize a wide range of driving environments. This next-generation driver assistance system provides improved safety and peace-of-mind for passengers, and represents a major evolution in collision detection performance.
・ The advanced environment recognition performance of EyeSight, using a stereo camera and a specialized 3D image processing engine, excels at pre-collision safety through the recognition of both pedestrians and cyclists as well.
・ Wide-ranging driving conditions that cannot be covered by a stereo camera alone are acquired through vehicle-to-vehicle and road-to-vehicle communication technology, which is then synchronized with EyeSight for a further evolution in preventative safety. Specifically, this system continuously detects vehicles that move into and out of blind spots, and advises the driver on appropriate driving maneuvers.

◆ Plug-in STELLA feat. BEAMS (Display model)
The Subaru Plug-in STELLA featuring BEAMS, developed based on the Subaru Plug-in STELLA launched this summer, offers a playful design by BEAMS, renowned specialty store, that enhances the joy of using an electric vehicle.
The Subaru Plug-in STELLA electric vehicle (EV) combines the EV system with a compact and light body, for convenience in business use and advanced energy efficiency for daily commuting.

◆ IMPREZA WRX STI CARBON (Display model)
Based on the Subaru Impreza WRX STI A-Line model with 5 speed automatic transmission that offers distinctive driving performance to a wider range of customers, the Subaru Impreza WRX CARBON features the use of carbon material in the roof to achieve both a significant weight reduction and a lower center of gravity. In addition, the suede fabric used in the interior enhances driving excitement and pride of ownership.

◆ EXIGA 2.0GT tuned by STI (Scheduled for market launch in Japan)
SUBARU TECNICA INTERNATIONAL inc. (STI), which manages Subaru motor sports activities, offers its latest proposal for a new seven-seater sports concept based on the multi-passenger Subaru EXIGA 2.0GT turbo model. The finely-tuned body and chassis elements ensure responsive and sporty handling for all drivers. In addition, the basic black sporty interior has a luxurious texture. This model integrates distinctive driving performance proposed by STI with the EXIGA’s touring seven-seater concept, and is a proposal for new value in the minivan market.

◆ Lineartronic (CVT) cutaway model (Technology exhibit)
Lineartronic is a new generation transmission of Subaru first made available in the all-new Legacy and Outback. Lineartronic is the first longitudinally mounted chain-type CVT system for AWD production vehicles, combining the advanced transmission efficiency and infinite variability between the highest and lowest available ratios, helping to keep the engine operating in its most efficient range, with smooth acceleration, quick shift response, and superior fuel efficiency.

◆ EyeSight featured in EXIGA 2.0GT EyeSight model (Technology exhibit)
Subaru’s advanced technology places the highest priority on safety in any environment. The EyeSight advanced safety device is a driver assistance system that excels at pre-collision safety through the use of a stereo camera and a 3D image processing engine that detect both pedestrians and cyclists as well. This system includes functions that rely solely upon the stereo camera, such as pre-collision braking and AT mis-starting prevention control, as well as functions that reduce driving load, such as cruise control with all vehicle speed range tracking function.

<EyeSight Functions>
*Cruise control with all vehicle speed range tracking function
*Pre-collision braking control
*AT mis-starting prevention control
*Lane departure warning system
*Wander warning
*Leading vehicle motion notification function

【A list of exhibits】
1.
Tokyo Preview: Honda Skydeck Concept Is Pure Minivan Hotness

It's not very often that we see minivan-like concepts these days. The idea of the multi-passenger people-mover is something that has taken very different shapes in recent years, and even with Honda's latest Skydeck concept, there's a lot of differentiation from your run-of-the-mill Odyssey van.

Check out those doors. The front scissors and the rear sliders are really quite interesting, and if this came to production as is, we'd be eager to show this off to everyone who walks by. Beyond those doors we see a very minimalist interior with an open, airy seating arrangement for four passengers with a foldable rear bench in the back.

The Skydeck will make its official debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, and we'll be sure to update you with the full details. For now, take a gander through our image gallery to see the concept from all angles.

Tokyo Preview: Honda CR-Z Concept Looks Production-Ready To Us

The evolution of the Honda CR-Z hybrid sports car concept is taking a nice shape. We first saw the concept at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, and for 2009, Honda is bringing an almost-production-ready version to the Tokyo stage. (Honda still insists on calling it a concept when, obviously, this thing looks ready to roll out onto the streets.)

Details are slim right now, but expect to see Honda's Integrated Motor Assist technology under the hood, mated to a 1.5-liter four. And since Honda is trumpeting this as a sportier car than the Insight hatch, a six-speed manual transmission will be available. Sounds good, since the current Insight's driving dynamics are incredibly uninspiring. We're hoping the CR-Z will be more like a modern-day version of the original Insight that debuted in 1999.

Stay tuned for the full onslaught of details, but for now, scroll through our gallery above to see the Tokyo-bound CR-Z.

Subaru WRX STI Carbon Is The Answer To A Question That Nobody Asked

We're always excited about a new version of the Subaru WRX, especially when it has something to do with the STI variant. For a while now, we've not-so-secretly been hoping that we'll get a press release someday announcing a lightweight, higher-power STI bound for American soil.

That's not what this one is. The STI Carbon, which will officially debut at this year's Tokyo Motor Show, features a carbon fiber roof (as its name would suggest), some new suede upholstery, and a five-speed automatic transmission only. No six-speed. No dual-clutch anything. So, why the changes? According to Subaru's very short press release (available if you click through the post), the autobox "offers distinctive driving performance to a wider range of customers," and the new suede fabric "enhances driving excitement and pride of ownership."

We'll stick with the original, thanks.

IMPREZA WRX STI CARBON

Based on the Subaru Impreza WRX STI A-Line model with 5 speed automatic transmission that offers distinctive driving performance to a wider range of customers, the Subaru Impreza WRX CARBON features the use of carbon material in the roof to achieve both a significant weight reduction and a lower center of gravity. In addition, the suede fabric used in the interior enhances driving excitement and pride of ownership.

Land Rover Confirms LRX Production, Shows Preview

After spying the first test mules of the car just last week, Land Rover announced this morning that it is indeed working on a production version of its LRX concept car. The three-door vehicle pictured here will debut next year, and join the Range Rover line in 2011.

Land Rover calls the upcoming LRX the, “Smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced.”

We’re happy to see that the coupe-like, striking silhouette from the concept car has made the transition to the production model, in what would appear to be an attractive, aggressive, and premium small offering from the company. Further details about the car will be released sometime next year—stay tuned.

Scroll down to read the Land Rover press release below.

Small Range Rover confirmed for production

Gaydon, Warwickshire, 24 September 2009 – Land Rover has confirmed today that a production version of its exciting LRX concept car will be built. The new car will debut next year and join the Range Rover line-up in 2011.

Designed and engineered at Land Rover's state of the art Gaydon facility, the new Range Rover will be the smallest, lightest and most efficient vehicle the company has ever produced.

The new car will be built at the multi award-winning plant in Halewood, on Merseyside, subject to quality and productivity agreements and will be sold in over 100 countries around the world.

Phil Popham, managing director of Land Rover said: “The production of a small Range Rover model is excellent news for our employees, dealers and customers. It is a demonstration of our commitment to investing for the future, to continue to deliver relevant vehicles for our customers, with the outstanding breadth of capability for which we are world-renowned."

"Feedback from our customer research also fully supports our belief that a production version of the LRX Concept would further raise the desirability of our brand and absolutely meet their expectations." Phil added.

Gerry McGovern, Land Rover design director said "The new vehicle will be a natural extension to the Range Rover line-up, complementing the existing models and helping to define a new segment. It will be true to the concept and have many recognisable Range Rover design cues including the signature clamshell bonnet, the floating roof and the solid 'wheel-at-each-corner' stance."

More details of the new small Range Rover will be released next year.

First Look: 2010 Saab 9-5 Is A Fresh Breath Of Scandinavian Air

For a while, the future of Saab looked glum. Thankfully, the fine folks at Koenigsegg have scooped up the Scandinavian automaker and now the future doesn't look so bad. The current 9-5 was a mess of General Motors influence on an aging platform and the end result was really quite bad, but from the details and images that we have on the new 9-5, it looks like Saab might be back in the game again.

Right off the bat, it's easy to see that the new 9-5 looks very, very different from anything we've seen out of Saab lately. A lot of the styling cues were inspired by the Aero X concept. Most interestingly, the entire glasshouse portion of the car is designed in a wraparound style with the painted roof panel not carrying over to the A-pillar. That aside, the whole car is filled with nice little design cues, and even though the headlight fixtures are still surrounded by strips of chrome, it's not nearly as horrible as on the last-generation car. Yeesh.

As for power, Saab is offering a wide range of powerplants for the Global marketplace. For America, we can expect that the 300-horsepower, 2.8-liter turbocharged six (sound familiar, Cadillac SRX?) will make it over, mated to Saab's XWD all-wheel drive system. A smaller, 1.6-liter turbo (180 horsepower) sounds reasonable for our shores, too, but nothing has been confirmed at this time.

For the full details, click through the post to read Saab's official press release.

All New Saab 9-5 Sedan: Start of a New Era for Saab

* Public debut for Saab's all new premium sedan
* Progressive Scandinavian design inspired by Aero X and Saab heritage
* Engineered with driver in focus for segment leading sporty driving experience
* Excels in responsible performance for safety and environmental concern
* Most technically advanced Saab with an array of 'high-tech' features

Making its public debut at the IAA in Frankfurt, the all new Saab 9-5 sedan signals the start of a new era for the Saab brand. Sleek, sophisticated and unmistakably Saab, it combines stand-out looks with advanced technologies and will bring a fresh alternative choice to the premium sedan segment when sales start later in model year 2010.

The clean, sculpted shape embraces the purity of Scandinavian design and its dramatic wraparound window graphic echoes Saab's aviation heritage. With frontal styling inspired by the award-winning Aero X concept car and a muscular, low-slung stance, the new 9-5 heralds the introduction of a bold, more expressive design language.

The array of high-tech features on offer includes: an aircraft-like head-up information display (Pilot HUD); adaptive lighting (Bi-Xenon Smart Beam); adaptive cruise control; Saab DriveSense adaptive chassis with real-time damping control; keyless entry and starting; tri-zone air conditioning; dynamic parking assistance and Saab XWD with a rear eLSD, the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system.

The all-turbo powertrain line-up starts at 1.6 liters and carries forward Saab's rightsizing engine strategy, which focuses on responsible performance through the development of highly efficient and relatively small four cylinder turbo engines. There is a choice of three fuels - gasoline, diesel and E85 bioethanol – and with diesel power, the new 9-5 offers CO2 emissions as low asn139 g/km.

"This car is the start of a new era for our brand," says Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile's Managing Director. "We have created an advanced and very distinctive product by leveraging the power of our roots in key areas, such as progressive Scandinavian design, sporty driving and responsible performance. The new 9-5 delivers in all these respects, as will every future product from Saab."

Scandinavian Design

Forward-looking design that doesn't ignore where it's coming from – that sums up the visual appeal of the all-new Saab 9-5 sedan. "We are giving a fresh, very modern expression to some of our classic brand design cues," says Simon Padian, Saab Brand Design Chief. "We have taken visual themes in our recent concept cars, such as the Aero X, which are inspired by Scandinavian design and our brand's aircraft heritage."

The face of the new 9-5 is defined by a deep grille flanked with curving, ice-block headlamp units. The entire glasshouse is presented as a 'wraparound' mono graphic, the disguised windshield and side pillars giving the cabin Saab's signature cockpit look. Squint slightly, and the proportions of the windshield and roof become reminiscent of the classic 900 model.

Viewed from any angle, the all new 9-5 cuts a strong and powerful stance. The 'organic sculpture' of the low-slung body blends clean, uncluttered lines with natural, curvaceous shapes. Brand design cues are evident in the 'hockey stick' belt-line, the strong rear C-pillars and the fuselage-smooth surfacing of the bodywork. The large Saab logo embossed in the center of the grille characterizes the more assertive, self-confident design language.

The car's dynamic character is emphasized by a falling roof-line that culminates in sweeping rear pillars which buttress a slightly recessed rear screen. Latent energy is conveyed by fenders that are subtly pulled out to melt into the wheels. Below that smooth, flat rear deck, a full-width, ice-block rear light bar wraps into signature lighting.

The new 9-5's overall proportions stretch the traditional three-box sedan silhouette, while avoiding the fastback cliché of a four-door coupé look.

Driver-focused cabin

Inside the spacious cabin, simple forms define its architecture and echo the design purity of the exterior. Compared to its predecessor, legroom is increased both front and rear. The choice of materials, the fit and finish and the tactile quality of the controls all reflect the new 9-5's premium appeal.

The driver-focused cockpit is traditional Saab, while its execution is all new. The deep center console sweeps up at a shallow angle around the driver into the main instrument display, which is topped by a neat ventilation zone. Deeply recessed main dials include a rolling 'altimeter' speed read-out, a reference to Saab's aviation heritage from the Aero X concept. Driver displays, including the optional head-up display (Pilot HUD) in the windshield, are predominantly illuminated in signature Saab green and have a crisp, floating appearance. The car's ignition, now a start/stop button, remains between the front seats, next to the gear shift.

Infotainment choices include a top-of-the-line harman/kardon surround sound audio system and an
8-inch touchscreen navigation system with hard disk storage for map data and 10 GB of jukebox-style music files. A large center console provides stowage and connections for several portable devices through USB and Aux ports alongside a 12V power outlet.

Rear passengers can access their own audio or watch a DVD. The rear seat entertainment unit in the back of the center console accommodates audio controls and fold-out viewing screens are installed in the front seat-backs. Wired and wireless headphones are provided for listening and viewing. The rear seat entertainment unit also includes twin air vents and an independent temperature control for the rear cabin, in addition to the dual zone air conditioning up front.

On the road

An array of chassis technologies is focused on delivering a sporty, rewarding driving experience that belies the 9-5's size. Saab XWD, the industry-leading all-wheel-drive system already available on the Saab 9-3, is offered with the 2.0-liter gasoline, BioPower and 2.8V6 turbo engines. Available throughout the range is adaptive chassis control with driver settings selection through Saab DriveSense, Bi-Xenon Smart Beam adaptive lighting and intelligent cruise control. Two different suspension layouts are factory-fitted according to engine power and both are available with a sport chassis setting.

Saab has some 30 years experience in turbocharging engines and the all-turbo powertrain line-up in the new 9-5 further develops Saab's rightsizing engine strategy. At launch, the four cylinder choice comprises a 160 hp, 2.0-liter turbo diesel with CO2 emissions of just 139 gm/km and a 2.0-liter gasoline turbo developing 220 hp. A top-of-the-line 2.8V6 turbo, generating 300 hp and 400 Nm of torque, is offered exclusively with Saab XWD.

Shortly after launch, a small, 1.6-liter gasoline turbo with 180 hp will be introduced, together with a 2.0-liter BioPower E85-capable engine. All transmissions will be six-speed.

New era

Defined and equipped by Saab as its top-of-the-line contender in the premium sedan segment, the new 9-5 is the most technically advanced car ever produced by the company. It will be built at Saab's home plant in Trollhättan, where it has been engineered and chiefly developed.

Available in Linear, Vector or Aero specification, the all new 9-5 heralds the start of a new era for Saab. Scandinavian simplicity was never this advanced!
