Aprilia Launches RSV4 R Sport Bike

Aprilia has just announced its new RSV4 R sport bike, a truly impressive machine that draws heavily from the World Superbike Champion RSV4 SBK.

The compact superbike packs a major punch with a 180 horsepower, 999cc V-4 engine at its heart, an all aluminum frame for superstructure, and rides on aluminum wheels. The VR4 R also offers the flexibility of a completely adjustable suspension setup, as well as powerful Brembo brakes with monobloc calipers. In all, Aprilia’s boast of the bike being a racing bike for the road seems well founded.

Have a better look at the RSV4 R in our gallery above, or read Apilia’s press release below.

APRILIA RSV4 R

Aprilia RSV4 R brings the technology and unique character of the V4 that redefined sports performance on the track within the reach of all enthusiasts.

With the advent of the R version, the Aprilia RSV4 - the bike that took the world by storm and set new standards for sports performance, both on the road and on the circuits of the SBK World Championship - is now accessible to an even broader group of enthusiasts.

RSV4 R maintains the same features that make the Aprilia RSV4 project so unique: the narrow 180 hp V4 engine, Ride-by-Wire integrated electronic management, dual injectors, race bred frame and suspension and extreme compactness.
Aprilia officially presents the new RSV4 R against the backdrop of the twelfth round of the World Superbike Championship.

Christened by Max Biaggi, the Aprilia RSV4 R is the latest product of the project that has brought Aprilia back to the pinnacle of the motorcycle world, both on the world's circuits and on the road.

A revolutionary project - starting from a blank piece of paper and drawing from the marque's unparalleled success on the racetrack - that led to the inception of the RSV4 SBK, the bike that Biaggi rode straight to victory in the World Superbike Championship, and a production bike which, in its Factory guise dedicated to circuit racing professionals, redefined the limits for the supersports genre.

Aprilia now presents the RSV4 R, a bike born from the same project in a new, more accessible guise, conceived to bring this fantastic machine within reach of expert riders who want to experience its technological supremacy.
To offer you the same sensations as you carve a perfect line from apex to apex that Max Biaggi experiences on the track in the World Superbike Championship, the Aprilia RSV4 R maintains all the features that make the superbike project so unique:

COMPACTNESS: Minimised dimensions and weight, a 65° V4 engine as narrow as a twin, a chassis architecture defined around the engine and an effective but essential

ENGINE PERFORMANCE: Class leading power, the torque of a twin, combined with the smooth power delivery and flexibility of a four cylinder, and dual injectors per cylinder. Technical and architectural solutions worthy of a genuine race prototype.

ELECTRONICS: Second generation Ride by Wire with multiple maps (track, sport and road).
CHASSIS ARCHITECTURE: Class beating solutions true to Aprilia traditions. The aluminium frame is built around the engine for maximum effectiveness both on the track and on the road. Suspension is completely adjustable.

ITALIAN DESIGN: The unique style of the RSV4 R is the product of a painstaking design process and was conceived and developed in Aprilia's own design centre. The styling solutions enhance the bike's class beating compactness, which is further emphasised by the spectacular, ultra-short tail fairing.

With 33 world championship titles (with number 34 - the 2009 World Constructor's Championship in the 125 cc class - already a mathematical certainty), 271 MotoGP World Championship wins and 9 Superbike wins under its belt, and with an unparalleled wealth of expertise and experience, Aprilia embarked on the RSV4 project with a single goal: to build the fastest bike on the track.

The engine of the RSV4 R is the most innovative and powerful unit ever built by Aprilia and is one of the highest performance engines available today: It is a super compact, 999.6 cc 65° narrow V-four cylinder engine designed for maximum power (180 hp), where cutting edge powerplant engineering comes together with the most advanced electronic engine management solutions. The V4 employs multimap Ride by Wire technology in conjunction with a state of the art electronic injection system with dual injectors, a solution opening up new frontiers for engine management, with practically infinite possibilities for development in terms of power delivery control. The RSV4 boasts a unique engine, the only V4 available today powering a roadgoing hypersports bike, further emphasising the exclusiveness of the RSV4 project.

Aprilia RSV4 R is a pure hypersports bike created to be ridden on the track. Both the frame and swingarm are made from aluminium using the same construction technology applied in GP machines, with variable thickness cast elements mated to pressed elements. The suspension is completely adjustable, the Brembo brakes boast monobloc callipers and radial calliper mounts and the wheels are made from aluminium.

The unique design, with its ultra-compact dimensions, essential fairing (showcasing the mechanicals of the RSV4 R in all their visual glory) and triple headlight are hallmark traits identifying the RSV4 as the world's most exclusive motorcycle.

World Map by Motorcycle

We Americans might dig our Harleys, but we can’t really hold a candle to much of the rest of the world when it comes to overall motorcycle and moped ownership. According to this curvy representative map by the SASI group, the Asian regions reign supreme for masses of motorcycles, with Malaysia racking up a substantial 238 mopeds and motorcycles owned per 1000 members of the population. Ethiopia ranked in worst place, meanwhile, with less than half a bike per thousand.

Take a closer look at the full data in the second slide of our gallery above.

Small English motorcycle builder Mac Motorcycles has spent the last year or so getting the word out about its stylishly retro lineup of small power sport bikes. The four café models offered stripped looks, based in part on the elegant air-cooled Buel single-cylinder that they all rocked.

While the Mac silhouette isn’t set to change anytime soon, the powerplant is. Harley-Davidson recently announced that large-scale production of the Buel Blast, along with its 492cc, 34 brake horsepower engine, would be coming to an end. Now Mac will be forced to scramble for a new mill, and it seems as if Yamaha’s liquid-cooled 660cc unit may be the winner. Perhaps not as pure looking as the air-cooled Harley motor, the Yamaha 660 would nonetheless provide a decent boost in power—up to 48 horsepower.

Have a closer look at the Mac line in our gallery above.

Leaked Images of Suzuki GSX-R125

Some seemingly internally leaked images from Suzuki would appear to show the company’s upcoming baby GSX-R, the GSX-R125, long before the bike’s official debut.

The mini Gixer does a great job of aping the styling of it’s hardcore older brothers, with a frame that appears to be extruded aluminum (it’s probably steel, we’re told) just like the big boys.

Not big is the 125cc water-cooled, 15 brake horsepower engine that is powering the thing, nor the guestimated 275 pound dry curb weight, nor the anemic rear tire. Probably just don’t need a lot of rubber to keep that power down.

+ Hell For Leather: Suzuki GSX-R125 official shot leaks

First Look: BMW F800R Chris Pfeiffer

World and European motorcycle stunt-riding champion Chris Pfeiffer has been honored by BMW today, as the Motorrad arm of the German manufacturer has announced an eponymous tribute to the rider—the F800R Chris Pfeiffer.

Pfeiffer has been exploiting the F800R’s nimbleness and ease of handling since BMW launched the bike in 2008, riding a competition version that differs only slightly from the new special edition bike that bears his name.

The Pfeiffer F880R is mostly an appearance package for the bike—save a new muffler from Akrapovic—including the rider’s signature on the gas tank, BMW Motorsport’s signature livery of white, blue, and red, no cockpit fairing, and LED indicators.

BMW notes that the new F800R will be launched in September of this year, but does not go so far as to indicate which world markets will receive the model.

Browse our gallery of images above for a better look at the F800R Chris Pfeiffer, or scroll down for the complete press release.

The new BMW F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer.

With the BMW F 800 R, BMW Motorrad expanded its F 800 model series for 2009, presenting a sporty roadster designed for a high level of riding dynamics and maximum riding pleasure in the segment of the medium category naked bikes. In addition to the two roadsters R 1200 R and K 1300 R, it was the third BMW roadster to see its international premiere in the BMW Motorrad Urban world of experience.

But it wasn’t just on public roads that the dynamic BMW naked bike swiftly made a name for itself. The extreme ease of handling which the F 800 R allows its rider was demonstrated by four-times World and European Stunt-Riding Champion Chris Pfeiffer as long ago as 2007 and 2008 on an F 800 S specially adapted to his needs and closely resembling the later F 800 R. Since the official presentation of this model in November 2008 in Milan, motorcycle acrobat Chris Pfeiffer has now been riding the new F 800 R at international competitions and shows – on a version which is only distinguished from the serial production machine in some details.

In the course of 2008, Chris Pfeiffer took part in stunt shows and contests on 85 days - and this year his appointment schedule is equally full. Chris Pfeiffer says: “No matter whether it’s about me as an individual, as a freestyle rider or as a racing rider: it’s always a question of being creative and showing the audience new, exciting things. It is simply amazing when the crowd starts to cheer even before you’ve started. I really appreciate the great support provided by BMW, and for me the F 800 R is simply the perfect stunt motorcycle – as demonstrated by my recent success.”

All this was reason enough for BMW Motorrad to mark Chris Pfeiffer’s success on the new F 800 R by bringing out a special model, the BMW F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer, closely resembling his competition bike. In addition there are the elaborate paintwork , the special edition sports Akrapović® muffler and other features to enhance the motorcycle’s sporty style. The basic technical characteristics remain unchanged from the standard model.

The engine in the F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer is again the liquid-cooled parallel twin with 4-valve technology and with a capacity of 798 cc. As in the F 800 R, the in-line 2-cylinder engine provides especially impressive pulling power, spontaneous response and a low level of fuel consumption.

Even in the lower engine speed range, the 4-valve engine - not especially short-stroke in design, with a bore/stroke ratio of 82.0 to 75.6 millimetres - quickly increases engine speed, building up 90 per cent of maximum torque at just 5,000 rpm. Between 5,000 and 8,000 rpm the engine provides an impressively dynamic level of power delivery, to the accompaniment of a unique sound. With a nominal output of 64 kW/87 bhp at 8,000 rpm, the engine produces a torque of 86 Nm at 6,000 rpm. Chris Pfeiffer on the unique twin: “The engine is loads of fun - I love its response even in the low and medium engine speed range, as well as its enormously wide rpm range, both when riding on the road and for stunt riding. Then there is the perfect throttle response and sensitive controllability of the 2-cylinder engine - absolutely imperative to be able to perform spectacular stunts.”

In its design, the F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer is the same as that of its eponym from the Allgäu. The multicolour paint finish in the BMW Motorsport colours of Alpine White non-metallic, Lupine Blue metallic, Magma Red non-metallic and Black silk matt contrast with the black drivetrain and swing arm; a white front wheel completes the sporty outfit. The standard, painted pillion passenger seat cover of the F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer also reflects the machine’s sporty purpose. The fact that it does not have cockpit fairing merely serves to emphasise the powerful, purist character of this special model. The F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer also attains a very high level of individuality, authenticity and value due to the overpainted Chris Pfeiffer signature on the central cover and the sponsor stickers which are supplied with the bike and can be optionally applied.

In terms of riding dynamics, the F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer delivers everything its sporty exterior promises. The “little roadster” by BMW Motorrad has already found more than 3,000 fans since May for its very agile, sporty performance. This is just what Chris Pfeiffer wants for his shows and competitions and will be much appreciated by sports-oriented motorcyclists on winding country roads or in the mountains.

Features which contribute to the exceptional dynamic performance in the F 800 R are the low weight of just 199 kg fully fuelled, the sprint-oriented gear ratio and the chassis, which is specially adapted to the demands of a sporty naked bike with light alloy bridge frame and dual rear wheel swing arm. Uniquely for the special model F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer, the spring of the rear spring strut is finished in red to match the bike’s sporty multicolour paint finish.

Chris Pfeiffer himself is happy to confirm the excellent chassis properties from his virtually day-to-day contact with the F 800 R: “The fact that no changes have been made to by competition version shows just how easy the F 800 R is to ride. I simply vary the tyre pressure, depending on road conditions. That really says it all.”

The new F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer is fitted as standard with the very sporty rear silencer by Akrapović®, otherwise only available as a special accessory. Its main advantages over the standard silencer are reduced weight and a throatier sound. Like the sporty rear silencer, the LED direction indicators (for Canada: white direction indicators) contribute to the dynamic appearance of this special model.

In addition to this, the F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer can also draw on the extensive BMW Motorrad option and accessory program to fulfil any further customer demands in terms of individual equipment features.

The market launch will be at the beginning of September 2009.

Chris Pfeiffer was at the Berlin Spandau plant in person at the beginning of July 2009 for the start of serial production of this F 800 R special model: he lent a hand himself and even rode the very first BMW F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer off the assembly line. As a small thank-you for this first special model bearing his name, the four-times World and European Stunt-Riding Champion provided a “best of” selection from his numerous stunt shows and competitions for the staff at the BMW Motorrad production plant. As he said when it was all over: “I am very pleased and proud that there will be a BMW Motorcycle on sale which bears my name. I regard this as both a great honour and powerful source of motivation. Riding the first machine to bear my signature off the production line really was a unique experience.”

Here is an overview of the main features of the new BMW F 800 R Chris Pfeiffer as compared to the standard model:

• Akrapović® rear silencer for a dynamic appearance and a sporty sound.
• Spring of rear spring strut finished in red.
• Painted pillion passenger seat cover.
• Highly sporty visual appearance with paint finish in the BMW Motorsport colours of Alpine White non-metallic, Lupine Blue metallic and Magma Red non-metallic, contrasting with elements in black silk matt.
• Front wheel finished in white.
• Clear overpainted Chris Pfeiffer signature on the central cover.
• Set of sponsor stickers supplied.
• No cockpit fairing.
• LED direction indicators.

Motley Crue: The Bikes of Icon

Motorcycle helmet and gear purveyor Icon has just added to its collection of strangely cool modded rides—this time with a seriously re-imagined Yamaha TT500 called Speed Cretin. While peeping the lollipop green supermoto via the cooler-than-thou cycle space Hell For Leather, we stumbled upon the rest of the Icon signature bikes. A lucky find, as Icon’s JDM/hip-hop/punk style of customization is a refreshing change from the usual flamed out Harleys.

Have a closer look at the Bikes of Icon in our gallery above, or click through the link below to read each ride’s full history at the Icon space.

Ahead of an upcoming feature on Allen Millyard’s latest two-wheeled creation, British motorcycle magazine, MCN, has the a video of the Millyard Viper.

The Millyard Viper is so named because it is powered by a 500-horsepower V-10 Dodge Viper engine. It looks difficult to ride, too, if you ask us. Watch the video here, and let us know what you think of the bike.
"This ambitious new motorcycle launch reaches to our riders with the incredible passion that Harley-Davidson has inspired for more than a century," said Bill Davidson, Harley-Davidson Vice President of Core Customer Marketing. "We are thrilled to offer our customers nine new models and a full selection of products for 2010 that lets their enthusiasm for enjoying great motorcycles continue at full throttle."
Highlights of the 2010 Harley-Davidson® line include:

    * As the new king of the Harley-Davidson Touring line, the Electra Glide® Ultra Limited model delivers the performance upgrade of a Twin Cam 103™ engine, and features standard equipment items previously offered only as accessories on regular-production Harley-Davidson Touring models.
* The new Road Glide® Custom model looks lean and mean, with a slammed suspension, 18-inch front wheel and a new 2-into-1 exhaust system.
* The Wide Glide® returns as an all-new Dyna® model done in old-school chopper style, with black laced wheels, a chopped rear fender, black "wire" sissy bar, 2-1-2 Tommy Gun exhaust and an optional flame paint scheme. Priced starting at $14,499, the Wide Glide is also a great new value.
* The new Street Glide® Trike brings stripped-down, hot-rod styling to the three-wheel category, and joins the Tri Glide™ Ultra Classic® in an all new Trike family for 2010.
* Dressed in satin chrome and denim black, the new Fat Boy® Lo presents a darker and lower interpretation of the motorcycle that still defines the fat-custom segment.
* The 2010 Street Glide® model gets even more hot-rod soul, with updates that include a larger front wheel, slimmed-down exhaust, and a new tail light assembly. Street Glide takes a classic Harley-Davidson Touring profile to a low, light and lean extreme.
* No motorcycle on the road today matches the modern street attitude of the three exciting models in the Harley-Davidson VRSC™ family: V-Rod®, Night Rod® Special and V-Rod Muscle®. The explosive performance of the liquid cooled Revolution® V-Twin engine keeps VRSC at the top of the power cruiser food chain in 2010.
* The American motorcycle legend that is Harley-Davidson Sportster® features six models for 2010, including the $7,999 Iron 883™ introduced mid-year 2009 and four others priced less than $10,000.
* Harley-Davidson Custom Vehicle Operations™ (CVO™), masters of shimmering chrome and bold paint, offers four new limited-production models for 2010. The CVO Softail® Convertible is a versatile urban touring motorcycle, while the CVO Street Glide is a high-performance hot-rod bagger. The CVO Ultra Classic® Electra Glide® and CVO Fat Bob® models are refreshed for 2010 with new paint schemes and styling details. All CVO models are powered by a Twin Cam 110™ engine, the largest displacement V-Twin offered by Harley-Davidson.

Harley-Davidson has released its 2010 line-up and the Harley-Davidson CVO Softail Convertible is at the top of the list. The Softail Convertible can be used as a touring motorcycle with a comfortable passenger seat and padded backrest but can be easily stripped down to reveal an aggressive solo-saddle cruiser with a 1803cc engine. Based on the Harley-Davidson Softail platform, the CVO Softail Convertible features a rear suspension design with a comfortable chassis, a fuel-injected twin cam 110B V-Twin engine, six speed Cruise Drive transmission, and 18-inch chrome aluminum Stinger wheels.

The smoked windshield, leather covered saddlebags, backrests, and pillion seat are all easily detachable making the bike lighter and a solo-saddle cruiser. It has been speculated that the CVO Softail Convertible will be priced at $27,999; however, nothing has been officially announced yet.

Rickshaw Challenge: Race Across South India on Three Wheels

If you like hurtling down a narrow, crowded, curvy road at 45 miles an hour in what looks a lot like a squashed muffin on wheels then this is the race for you.

The Rickshaw Challenge is open for registration! This three-wheeled, two-stroke eyesore is often used in place of taxis in India and participants are invited to race them across the Deccan Plateau. The Rickshaw Challenge is spread out over a span of six months, starting in August and ending in April. There are several different races that participants can take part in, the longest one being a circular route, of 1406 miles, around South India over a span of eleven days. The competition is expensive, the cheapest race costing $2143 plus an optional deposit of $1500 to protect your auto. However, all the money goes towards a good cause; to raise awareness and funds to increase education in India. You can customize and pimp your rickshaw in time for your race, at an additional cost of course.

Participating in the race will give you a chance to drive one of the looniest vehicles known to man and will also allow you to see what India really is like. Let us know if you plan to register for the challenge and don’t forget your camera!

Click on the link below to find out more about the Rickshaw Challenge and to register for it.

Life Size Paper Mache Motorcycles

We may have made a paper mache sculpture or two while we were in school but artist Steve McKinley has taken the medium to the next level.

The idea behind most of McKinley’s sculptures, that range from small tabletop pieces, to some of the life size motorcycle pieces seen here, is to depict a lot of everyday ideas with a touch of humor and wit. They do however, carry a fairly steep price—some reaching as high as $3500.

Scroll through our gallery to see the sculptures that McKinley has made. Let us know what you think of these strange creations, and definitely let us know if you buy one!

To contact the artist click on the link below.

First Look: 2010 Victory Cross Roads & Cross Country

Victory unveiled the 2010 Cross Roads and the Cross Country yesterday at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles. The design of the bikes has been taken from the CORE concept bike, which was displayed at the New York International Motorcycle Show.

Both the new bikes come with 106/6 V-Twin engines. The 106 cubic-inch (1,731cc), SOHC, four-valve, fuel-injected twin claims 92 horsepower and 109 pound-feet of torque. The handlebars on both bikes are adjustable and can be rotated to give the rider a more comfortable drive. The bikes come with 5.8 gallon fuel capacity. The New American Motorcycle Company hinted at the price of the bikes and said that the Cross Roads might be sold at $15,000 and the Cross Country at $17,000 onwards, however, these prices are not official.

The Snaefell Project: A Homemade Sidecar

François Knorreck has just finished building this sleek new sidecar, no pun intended, in his garage. A project that took 10 years (10,000 hours) and 15,000 Euros ($21,321) to complete is quite an astounding feat. Knorreck modified a 1000cc Laverda 3CL into a racing bike and then went on to build the sidecar.

Knorreck used bits and pieces from several different cars to create the Snaefell Sidecar. The chassis is handmade with aluminum; the hubs and brakes come from a VW Golf GTI, the wheels are from an Audi 80, the tail lights from a Citroën Xantia, and the headlights from a Kawasaki 1000 RX bike. The bodywork is done with carbon fiber and polyester and all handmade. Even the interiors of the sidecar are handmade. The Snaefell Sidecar has a logo with Knorreck’s Initials. Look through the gallery to see Knorreck’s handiwork and tell us what you think.

For more details how the Snaefell Project click on the link below.
+ Breganzane: Blog: Snaefell Project
