Driven: 2010 BMW X5M

If a nonsensical vehicle like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S tickles your fancy, you may want to leave space on your bedroom wall for another drool-worthy pinup. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the BMW X5M. It has 555 horsepower, it runs a tuned version of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, and it costs $85,400—that’s a whopping $40,900 less than the starting price of Madam Cayenne. And if you immediately think to yourself, “Well, clearly this is because the Porsche is a superior vehicle,” you’ll want to think again. The X5M is as good to drive as it is hard to comprehend.

When BMW introduced its latest M-badged creations—in both X5 and X6 guises—we weren’t sure what to think. And while we’ve now driven both of the beastly crossovers, they still don’t make a whole lot of sense to us (just like the turbocharged Cayennes). But while the Porsche is only minimally impressive, what with its somewhat disconnected driving experience, the X5M (and X6M, alike) is really honed in as a true driver’s car. The Ultimate Driving Crossover, if you will.

We’ve spoken before about our love for BMW’s latest 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8, which in its standard form produces 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. The X5M uses this same powerplant, though total output numbers have been upped by 155 and 50, respectively. This is a truly impressive mill, with tons of power on tap in the low end of each gear (the torque thrust is delivered as low as 1500 rpm), and a really linear feeling to the overall acceleration. There’s a huge rush of power right off the line that never seems to let up. It feels more like a naturally aspirated V-10 rather than a boosted V-8. And while the X5M is indeed a portly thing, weighing in at 5368 pounds, it will still sprint to 60 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds. That’s as quick as an M3 Coupe.

In the bends, the X5M continues to shine. The steering does feel a bit heavy at times, though we greatly appreciate the use of speed-sensitive power steering in this regard. It never feels disconnected or like there’s too much play in the wheel, but instead is sharp and crisp, especially at initial turn-in. Through a corner, the big BMW is very balanced with minimal body roll and tons of available grip on hand. This is due, in part, to the large twenty-inch wheels that measure ten inches wide in front and eleven out back. And though the big V-8 up front is a heavy motor to carry around, the X5M still manages a near-perfect weight distribution of 51.7/48.3 percent front/rear. Other driving aids like M-tuned dynamic stability control and brake cornering control keep things in line, as well.

Another commendable trait of the X5M is its six-speed automatic transmission. This tranny is totally different from the seven-speed DCT of the M5 and M6, but it feels like there are two clutches working together for flawless shifts. Quick gear changes are continuously executed, and we very much enjoyed moving through the cogs via the steering wheel-mounted paddles (right to upshift, left to downshift—the way it should be).

A key thing to note about the X5M is that even though it’s fast, smooth, and really involving in terms of overall driving experience, it’s still a big, heavy vehicle, and long stints of hard driving will prove to be very tiresome to the driver. It’s not an effortless machine, this X5M, and we rather like it.

No big interior changes have been made on the M versus a standard X5, save the standard addition of a sport steering wheel, second-generation iDrive integration, and some M badges. The front seats could stand to be a bit more supportive—adjustable side bolsters would easily do the trick here—but aside from that, it’s simple BMW goodness in the cabin.

So while the X5M doesn’t necessarily make a whole lot of sense right off the bat, we can see how an enthusiast would warm up to this beast as a daily driver. Sure, it’s extremely fast and entertaining to drive, but we must also remember that the good-to-use crossover traits of the X5 are still on hand. There’s tons of room inside, it’s four-season friendly (though you’ll definitely want to opt for snow tires in the cold-weather months), and if you really wanted to, you could tow with it. Would we drive one every day? You bet. But for eighty-five large, we’d rather have a two-car garage with more nimble machines on tap. Still, would-be Cayenne Turbo buyers would be smart to stop by the BMW dealership before making a final purchase decision.

2010 Aston Martin Rapide Priced From $199,950

The über-exotic Rapide, Aston Martin's new four-door, four-seat sports car, officially launches in the second quarter (late Spring) of 2010, retailing for a base MSRP of $199,950. Aston Martin expects to build approximately 2000 Rapides total in the first year of production.

Production will commence at the all-new Aston Martin Rapide Plant in Graz, Austria, and each car will take roughly 220 man hours to build. Naturally, these cars come stocked with the highest levels of refinement, just like the rest of the Aston Martin line (which we recently had the chance to sample), and standard features include things like a Bang & Olufsen Beosound audio system (tuned specifically for the Rapide), heated memory seats, an adaptive damping system, and dual-cast brakes.

Aston Martin Announces Rapide Pricing for the United States

As the eagerly awaited Aston Martin Rapide four-door sports car goes through final engineering and testing phases before being launched in early quarter two 2010, Aston Martin confirms US pricing.

The price of the Rapide will start from $199,950 in the US which features an impressive level of standard specification including: Bang & Olufsen Beosound audio system tailored specifically for Rapide, heated memory seats, dual cast brakes and Adaptive Damping System.

The Rapide is Aston Martin’s first production four-door sports car encapsulating the practicality of a car with extra doors and fusing it with the trademark sports car dynamics synonymous with modern Aston Martins.

Customer deliveries will commence in spring 2010, and it will be the first sports car to be hand-built at the Aston Martin Rapide Plant (AMRP) in Graz, Austria. The new 17,000 m2 building has been designed to reflect the quality levels established in Gaydon since 2003 permitting the fusion of modern technology, advanced manufacturing processes and handbuilt craftsmanship. Each Rapide will take approximately 220 man hours to build and will benefit from timeless craft skills just like the existing range: DBS, DB9, V12 and V8 Vantage do at Gaydon.

It is anticipated that +/- 2,000 Rapides will be built in the first year attracting a high proportion of new customers to the brand. Core to this trend is the mix of huge attention to detail throughout the car, ample accommodation for up to four adults and the spacious trunk while maintaining Rapide’s elegant beauty and sports car profile.

Spy Shots: Is This Lotus Prototype A Mule For The V-8 Esprit?

Our spy photographer caught this Lotus prototype out testing. Could it be a mule for a V-8 engine for the new Lotus Esprit? And if so, will the engine come from Toyota? BMW?

At this point, we can only guess, but we definitely get excited when we look at these photos. Any new developments from Lotus are a sign of good things to come.

With new photos of a Lotus prototype rumors have started again of what it could be. With the Esprit given the green light some believe it’s a mule testing the new powertrain for the Esprit. The Esprit is expected to be powered from a Toyota based V8 according to the latest rumors. That still might change since the first rumors were talking about a modified BMW V8 engine.

Others believe that this mule is the first prototype for the new Elise/Exige since there would be no room for a V8 in this small body.

Only time will tell, and we will keep you updated as soon as we get some new photos and info.

Video: 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR Sets Lap Record At Laguna Seca

A 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR has set a new lap record for a production vehicle at Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. Its time of 1:33:915 beats the previous record by over one second.

The Viper SRT10 ACR is a purpose-built street-legal track car. It features a revised fifth gear ratio, a design inspired by time spent on the Nurburgring. An imporved short throw shifter and redesigned aerodynamics, as well as a top speed of 184 miles per hour are new for 2010.

The Viper SRT10 ACR is powered by a 600-horsepower, 8.4-liter V-10 that flings it to 60 miles per hour in under four seconds. It will make its official debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show next month.

Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR Recaptures Lap Record at Laguna Seca

Street-legal, Production Supercar Sets New Mark

Monterey, Calif., Nov 24, 2009 - The Street and Racing Technology (SRT) team from Chrysler Group LLC arrived at Laguna Seca raceway today on a mission – to recapture the production car lap record at the world-renowned road course in Monterey, Calif.

Mission accomplished.

Chris Winkler, an SRT vehicle dynamics engineer piloted a black and red 2010 Dodge Viper SRT10 ACR (American Club Racer) to a lap record of 1:33.915 as recorded by Motech in-vehicle data recorder (1:33.944 - as unofficially recorded by trackside clock) around the 2.238-mile, 11-turn course, shattering the previous lap record by more than 1.1 seconds.

“It was definitely exciting but a somewhat uneventful lap overall from behind the steering wheel,” said Winkler, who is still learning the intricate details of Laguna Seca raceway, having spent only one other session on the course. “The Dodge Viper ACR has amazing power and handles like a dream, so following my first practice here last month, I came away pretty confident that we’d be able to set a new record.”

In 2008, professional road racer Randy Pobst, drove a 2008 Dodge Viper ACR to a one-lap, production car record of 1:35.117 at Laguna Seca raceway while working with Motor Trend. That record stood until August 6, 2009 when the most recent record of 1:35.075 was established by a one-off exotic prototype.

Ralph Gilles, President and CEO, Dodge Brand and Senior Vice President, Product Design Office, Chrysler Group LLC, was impressed with the Viper’s performance. “I’ve been closely tied to this car my entire career and even after owning one myself for some time, I’m still amazed with what the Dodge Viper can do on and off the race track,” Gilles said. “After our record-setting lap at the Nürburgring circuit, we’re excited to set a second performance benchmark record at another world-famous road course.”

The Dodge Viper is going into the final year of production for the current-generation model. Approximately 500 Vipers will be produced in 2010.

“We’re going to keep Dodge’s performance icon alive and well by not only producing some of the most special Vipers ever built, but we’re also investigating what the next-generation Viper is going to be,” added Gilles. “When we have partners across the ocean who are known as the best sports carmakers in the world, the future opportunities are huge.”

The Dodge Viper ACR remains the ultimate purpose-built, street-legal track car since its introduction in 2008.
New for the 2010 model year is a shorter fifth gear ratio (changing from 0.74 to 0.80) for improved high-speed acceleration and higher straightaway speeds. This improvement is a direct result of SRT’s experience at the 12.9-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany where during the lap-record run in 2008, it was found that a revised gear ratio would have resulted in a higher speed capability and potentially a shorter elapsed time.

The Dodge Viper ACR also receives a new short-throw shifter in 2010 for enhanced driver experience and better performance. The rear wing profile and end plates are redesigned to further optimize the vehicle aerodynamics and improve rear yaw downforce. These changes result in an increase in top speed of 4 mph (to 184 mph).

Powered by the venerable 8.4-liter, V-10 engine with 600 horsepower and 560 lb.-ft. of torque, the Dodge Viper ACR continues to offer extreme performance, including 0-60 mph acceleration in less than 4 seconds, quarter-mile time in the mid 11-second range and 0-100-0 mph in 11 seconds flat.

The Dodge Viper ACR with optional Hard Core Package is more than 80 lbs. lighter than the production SRT10 and offers race-ready hardware and competition tuning for optimal on-track performance.

The four-wheel independent suspension features high-performance aluminum control arms and knuckles, KW suspension with two-way adjustable competition coil-over shock absorbers with remote reservoirs.

The aerodynamic package features a carbon fiber “fanged” splitter in front and adjustable carbon-fiber wing with seven-position stanchions that allow up to an amazing 1,000 lbs. of downforce at 150 mph. Lightweight wheels, two-piece slotted StopTech brake rotors and Michelin PS Cup tires round out the Dodge Viper ACR package.

Video: Underground Racing Creates A Monster With Its Twin-Turbo Lamborghini Gallardo

First Look: 2011 Cadillac CTS Coupe Arriving In Spring 2010, CTS-V Coupe To Follow

The speculation surrounding the Cadillac CTS Coupe finally comes to an end today. The official images and details of the two-door CTS have been released and the production car will hit showrooms in the spring of 2010. And while the coupe might look a lot like the sedan and wagon variants that we've already driven, it's important to know that only the instrument panel, console, front fenders, grille, and headlamps are shared with the sedan. The coupe rides on the same wheelbase, but is shorter by two inches and rides two inches lower to the ground.

At its launch, the only engine available will be GM's lovely 3.6-liter direct-injection V-6 with 304 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants will be available, as are two different handling packages, one wearing eighteen-inch wheels, and the other with upgraded brakes and nineteen-inch wheels.

Hot for a V-badged CTS Coupe? Look for that M3-killer to arrive later next year, hopefully using the same 556-horsepower supercharged mill as the sedan. The CTS Coupe is nothing short of bold and beautiful, and we're excited to see how it compares to the perennial-favorite BMW 335i.

2011 CADILLAC CTS COUPE: NEW SPORTS COUPE IS CADILLAC'S MOST DRAMATIC DESIGN

LOS ANGELES – Cadillac today unveiled the 2011 CTS Coupe, the latest and most dramatic of the brand's series of new designs to reach production. Slated to arrive in Cadillac showrooms in the spring of 2010, the CTS Coupe is a new luxury sports coupe designed to become the centerpiece of the brand's revised lineup.

"CTS Coupe is the new focal point of Cadillac, expressing both our design and technical capabilities," said Bryan Nesbitt, Cadillac general manager. "It is intended to appeal to a new generation of car enthusiasts."

The Coupe joins the CTS Sport Sedan, the 556-horsepower (415 kW) CTS-V and new CTS Sport Wagon as the foundation of Cadillac's lineup. A high-performance V-Series edition of the Coupe will also be released in 2010.

The CTS Coupe's design carries over virtually unchanged from the concept car that was introduced at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2008. The Coupe is a classic 2+2 layout bolstered with advanced technology, such as a rear-view camera system and a performance-oriented suspension system coupled to rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Design
CTS Coupe emerged as a proposal inside Cadillac's design studio, where designers have developed and evolved the brand's Art and Science design philosophy.

"Cadillac has always been an emotional brand – it's about delivering art regardless of body style," said Max Wolff, director of exterior design for Cadillac. "With the CTS Coupe, it was about taking something very strong – the CTS Sport Sedan – and
extending its potential."

The coupe has the same wheelbase as the CTS, but an overall height that is approximately two inches (51 mm) lower and an overall length that is two inches (51 mm) shorter.

Although it draws from its sport sedan sister, the CTS Coupe shares only the instrument panel, console, headlamps, front fenders and grille. Key design features include:

    * Classic hardtop styling, with no conventional B-pillar
    * Touch-pad operation for the doors removes the need for conventional door handles, creating a technical, clean profile
    * A windshield laid at a faster angle (62.3 degrees) and a long, nearly horizontal backglass area combine to create a sleek, aerodynamic look
    * Sculpted lower front fascia with unique brake-cooling vents
    * Diamond cut-style rear fascia with mesh lower grilles
    * Center-outlet exhaust with twin dihedral-shaped tips that pass through the rear fascia
    * Signature vertical lighting, highlighted with LED light pipes
    * Rear spoiler integrated into the center high-mounted stop lamp
    * Sculpted roof-mounted antenna for OnStar and XM Satellite Radio.

At first glance, the shape of CTS Coupe is refreshingly simple, yet amplified with intricately carved details. Distinctive and original Cadillac signature cues combine with hand-sculpted forms, artfully articulating the confidence of the chassis. For example, the rear fenders were purposefully developed by hand in Cadillac design studios to visually acknowledge the RWD powertrain. The gestured profile, coupled with Cadillac's vertical taillamps and pronounced rear centerline, aim to achieve the most visually confident coupe in the segment.

Performance
The CTS Coupe extends Cadillac's emerging performance credentials. The CTS Coupe's standard powertrain consists of a direct injected 3.6L V-6 and six-speed manual transmission. Direct injection technology delivers fuel more precisely to increase the efficiency of combustion, enabling more power while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions – including a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions.

The 3.6L DI engine is rated at 304 horsepower (227 kW) and offers EPA-estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg on the highway. It also runs on less expensive regular unleaded gasoline.

The powertrain's performance is channeled through a chassis that delivers sports car performance without punishment. The hardware includes an independent short/long arm (SLA) front suspension system, with hydraulic control arm front bushings; and a multi-link rear suspension mounted on a fully isolated subframe. Also included are four-wheel disc performance brakes, premium steering and limited-slip differential.

Two suspension-tuning levels are available: a Performance Package with 18-inch wheels and all-season tires (available in both RWD and AWD,) and the Summer Tire Performance Package, with 19-inch tires and wheels and a higher level of road holding
capability. StabiliTrak, the advanced electronic chassis control system, is standard.

The 304-horsepower (227 kW) 3.6L V-6 Direct Injection engine will be standard, equipped with a six-speed manual, featuring a revised clutch and dual-mass flywheel that offers better clutch pedal feel and improved engine isolation. A 6-speed automatic
transmission with Driver Shift Control (and available steering wheel mounted shift buttons) is optional.

Technology
CTS Coupe blends handcrafted luxury with a contemporary, driver-focused interior that supports the car's high-performance capabilities. The interior includes hand-sewn accents covering the door, center storage console and instrument panel trim. 14-Way adjustable Recaro sport seats, previously exclusively offered on Cadillac's V-Series model, will be offered on all CTS Coupe models as an option.

The car offers a host of advanced technologies, including:

    * Integrated iPod/MP3 capability
    * 40-gig hard drive, including the ability to store music and pause-and-replay live radio
    * Pop-up navigation system
    * Adaptive forward lighting system
    * Bluetooth connectivity
    * Standard Keyless Access and Smart Remote Start
    * Rear Camera system
    * Bose 5.1 Cabin Surround™ audio system

As with other Cadillac models, the CTS Coupe comes standard with OnStar with Turn-by-Turn Navigation, the first factory-installed, fully integrated GPS navigation system from OnStar.

Porsche Announces 911 GT3 R

Porsche has announced the 911 GT3 R. Based on the GT3 Cup S, it is powered by a 480-horsepower, 4.0-liter flat-six. Porsche promises better driveability and easier handling than its predecessor, thanks to ABS, traction control, and throttle blip, making it “more appropriate for the ambitious amateur racing driver.”

The 911 GT3 R is scheduled to debut on January 14, 2010 at the Birmingham Motor Show. It is priced at the current equivalent of $414,950.

New Racing Version for International GT Sport  Stuttgart. Following the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is entering yet another racing car in the 2010 motorsport season: The 911 GT3 R will be raced in series based on the international FIA GT3 regulations, thus succeeding the 911 GT3 Cup S. The main focus in developing this new model was on even better drivability and even easier handling.  The 911 GT3 R is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine delivering maximum output of 480 bhp (353 kW) transmitted to the rear axle by a sequential six-speed dog gearbox.  The starting point in developing the 911 GT3 R weighing just 1,200 kg or 2,646 lb was the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup presented in September for one-make cup racing. Thanks to its increase in engine size by 0.2 litres, the GT3 R offers 30 bhp more than the Cup model. Both cars are based on the extra-wide body of the 911 GT3 RS street-legal sports car.  An anti-lock brake system (ABS), traction control and an e-gas with "throttle-blip" function make it much easier to get used to this new GT3 racing car than its predecessor, meaning that the new model is also more appropriate for the ambitious amateur racing driver.  Flared wheel arches added on to the body both front and rear bear clear testimony to the wider track than on the former model. And like all second-generation versions of the 911, the new 911 GT3 R also comes with striking LED rear light clusters.  The Porsche 911 GT3 R is making its world debut on 14 January 2010 at the Birmingham Motor Show. The car is built by Porsche's Motorsport Department at the Weissach Development Centre and will be delivered to Customer Teams the world over as of spring 2010. The base price of the Porsche 911 GT3 R is 279,000 euros plus local sales tax/VAT.

Driven: 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR Touring

We're fresh from the driver's seat of the newest addition to the Lancer Evo fast family, the mildly more grown up MR Touring model. Mitsubishi has got a lot happening at its event in Palm Springs, California this afternoon (stay tuned for much more from this desert trip in coming days), but we felt we'd be remiss if we didn't check in with a few quick thoughts about the new Evo.

For those of you who haven't heard, the new Touring version of the Evolution is aimed at a slightly more mature buyer than its big-winged brothers. The standard Evo's tea-tray wing has been replaced here by a super subtle lip spoiler, making the car considerably less noticeable, right of the bat. Touring also receives a hot set of BBS wheels, a fully leather interior, a power sunroof, and heated Recaro buckets. Perhaps the most changing feature of the new Evo however, is the extra sound deadening material that has been stuffed in the car.

One of our biggest gripes with previous Evolutions was the raucous exhaust note that came throbbing out of the tailpipe, no matter how one worked to keep the revs down. Don't get us wrong; we love a spirited engine note as much as anyone-for a certain period of time. After a while, especially if doing any kind of suburban or urban humdrum driving, that blat from the back starts to wear on one's nerves. Touring has tackled this problem in a savvy way, leaving more than enough throatiness to enliven the senses, while seriously dialing back the low-speed thunder. It's a compromise that we think makes the Evo a better all-around car.

Thankfully, the loss of the huge wing and the addition of the sound-stopping stuff seemed to have more or less cancelled each other out from a weight standpoint. The new Evo is only about 30 pounds heavier than the standard MR, meaning the car feels as dynamically sound as ever. We didn't notice a bit of difference over our, admittedly short, scoot through the desert this afternoon-the Evo still felt hugely accelerative, sweet handing, and grippy.

The only obvious downside of the MR Touring (other than the lack of a manual transmission, still available in the GSR only) is the pretty hefty price tag. An MSRP of $40,990 brings the top-dog Lancer into the territory of some pretty refined competition. We have no problem seeing the Evo compete dynamically with the likes of BMW and Audi, but we're not sure the overall quality is there yet. Still, we smell some compelling comparison tests in future-this isn't the last you'll hear about the Evo MR Touring from the Winding Road team.

ATT Autotechnik Doppelturbo-Cabriolet Takes Aim At BMW's Droptop M3

Not long ago, we sampled a tuned-up version of the BMW 335i in the form of the Dinan S1, and in our non-track test, we actually preferred the hot S1 to that of BMW's already good M3 Coupe.

Tuner ATT Autotechnik has put its spin on the BMW 335i Convertible and the simple modifications are enough to give it a different sort of edge over the stock droptop M3. For starters, power has been boosted to 356 horsepower and 388 pound-feet of torque. And while that may be 58 less horsepower than an M3, the ATT example produces 93 more pound-feet of torque out of the twin-turbocharged inline-six engine. We've discussed the joys of turbo thrust and torque power before, and in some cases actually prefer it to larger-displacement, naturally aspirated mills (though the M3's V-8 is one hell of a good engine), so it looks like this steroid-enhanced 335i cabrio might offer more interesting dynamics for everyday driving.

Other changes include a sharp set of twenty-inch wheels and stainless steel exhaust, giving it a more subdued overall appearance than a comparable M3. Like the Dinan, we can easily see the Doppelturbo-Cabriolet being a more interesting steer than the M-badged Bimmer on the street, but as a track performer, it's hard to say. Let's face it, in the history of BMW there has been no better BMW 3 series convertible, besides the M3. If you like to drive fast and topless, here you are seated just right. The dual turbo six-cylinder car from ATT out of Rastatt convinces primarily through its increased engine power to spectacular 362 hp and 536 Nm.

The tuner offers two power enhancements. At power level I (2.355,00 Euro) the 335i achieves 345 hp and 481 Nm by the use of an additional controller. At power level II (4.130,00 Euro) the bi turbo achieves entire 362 hp and 526 Nm - therefore accountable is not just the additional controller but also the stainless steel sport exhaust system, which adds to the ideal output effect.

Big ATT TEC LeMans 20"wheels emphazise the futuristic appearance of the ambitious athlete. The aluminum rims in the dimension 8,5x20" and 10x20" with high performance tires from Michelin "Pilot Sport 2" size 245/30 ZR20 and 285/25 ZR20 are worth 3.475,00 Euro, mounting and balancing included.

New in the range are the design fender in M3-optics. For 1.843,00 Euro you can get these from ATT already with original M3-louver, boxes, mounting accessories and LED blinker. For additional 597,00 Euro the fender can be ordered in Rastatt in car body color.

Lotus Releases U.S. Pricing For 2010 Evora

Lotus has released U.S. pricing for the 2010 Evora. And the magic number is:

$73,500.

Not bad for a 2+2, mid-engine Lotus with a 276-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6, delivering upwards of 30 miles per gallon highway.

The 2010 Lotus Evora will go on sale in the U.S. during the first quarter of next year. In the meantime, two Evoras are traveling to dealerships across the country for open houses (details follow in the press release).

While Evora production for the UK and European markets has been ramping up for months to begin fulfilling their orders, production for the US and Canadian markets has yet to begin. First Look: 2010 BMW M3 GTS Is A Track Day Dream Come True

At long last, a hardcore, track-ready version of the latest BMW M3 Coupe has been released, set to go on sale in the Spring of 2010. But unlike the M3 CSLs of the E46 generation, this new M3 GTS is significantly lighter, more powerful, and has a long list of track-friendly upgrades.

Under the hood, the standard 4.0-liter V-8's displacement has been increased to 4.4 liters, meaning output has been increased from 414 to 450 horsepower. All of that shove is being routed to the rear wheels via BMW's M DKG Drivelogic dual-clutch gearbox, though the characteristics have been specially tuned to match the GTS's extra power and performance.

Power upgrades are one thing, but when it comes to track cars, lightness is key. The M3 GTS weighs slightly less than 3300 pounds, and while that may seem pretty porky, remember that the standard M3 Coupe is around 400 pounds heavier. What's more, the GTS uses a heavily upgraded suspension and high-performance brakes, along with special nineteen-inch wheels. Naturally, another strong point of the GTS's performance is in its aerodynamics, and with just a quick glance at this car, it's easy to see that the aero design is heavily based on World Touring Car Championship vehicles, like the 320si.

Ready to Go – also on the Road: The BMW M3 GTS.

BMW M GmbH now offers a truly outstanding performer based on the BMW M3 Coupé also ideal for Clubsport events – exactly the right car for the truly discerning customer demanding the very utmost in terms of power and performance. The BMW M3 GTS is largely hand-built by the most skilled craftsmen at BMW M GmbH as a perfectly harmonised package of outstanding modifications, with production exclusively to the customer’s personal order. Focused on motorsport, the modifications comprise both the drivetrain, the suspension and the body of the car, as well as its interior. Market launch of the BMW M3 GTS will be in spring 2010.

Offering this truly exclusive model for the genuine motorsport enthusiast, BMW M GmbH is continuing a great tradition introduced on former generations of the BMW M3. Once again, the outstanding sports potential of the BMW M3 is being consistently enhanced and upgraded to an even higher level, the customer benefiting from the Company’s wide range of know-how in the development and production of racing cars. Through its race-oriented modifications enhancing both performance and safety, the BMW M3 GTS is ready to go in Clubsport events on the track and comes with the option for homologation on the road. So that the driver is able to make his way to the race track in the very same car he will use for racing.

Consistent lightweight technology.

Consistent lightweight construction, adjustable aerodynamic units, an increase in engine size and output on the V8 high-speed power unit and suspension technology meeting all the requirements of motorsport – all this gives the BMW M3 GTS a top position among high-performance cars built for Clubsport racing. Unladen weight according to the DIN standard is less than 1,500 kg (3,300 lb), the lightweight body comes with special mounts for six-point seat belts and a rollcage fitted behind the B-pillar.

Through its design and construction, the materials used and its special equipment, the BMW M3 GTS is a lightweight performer all the way, offering a genuine motorsport driving experience in every respect. In addition to the carbon fibre roof already featured as standard on the BMW M3, weight is consistently optimised by features such as silencers made of titanium, the extra-light centre console and door linings, the omission of rear seats, automatic air conditioning and an audio system, as well as sound insulation tailored specifically to this very special model.

V8 high-speed power unit: derived from motorsport, optimised for motorsport.

The eight-cylinder power unit of the BMW M3 GTS enlarged in size to 4.4 litres and boosted in output to some 450 hp boasts construction principles and technical details carried over directly from motorsport. A supreme surge of ongoing power throughout a wide range of engine speed characterises the outstanding performance of the V8 with its high-speed concept. The features typical of a motorsport engine include the crankcase made of a special aluminium-silicon alloy and constructed in bedplate design, individual throttle butterflies, anti-knock sensors with ion flow technology, and, wet sump oil supply optimised for supreme driving dynamics.

Seven-speed M DKG Drivelogic with race-bred gearshift.

Power is transmitted in the BMW M3 GTS by the M double-clutch gearbox with Drivelogic also available as an option on the regular production model. This seven-speed M DKG Drivelogic gearbox follows a principle also developed for motorsport, shifting gears without the slightest interruption of engine power. The transmission was developed specifically for a particularly powerful high-speed engine and offers ideal qualities for truly dynamic acceleration at all times. The gearshift characteristics on the seven-speed M DKG Drivelogic have been tailored specifically to the modified power unit of the BMW M3 GTS and the driver is able to shift gears both through the selector lever on the centre console and through special M shift paddles on the steering wheel.

High-performance suspension with purpose-built brakes.

To convey the supreme power of the engine to the road in equally supreme style even under the most extreme conditions, the BMW M3 GTS comes with suspension technology likewise derived from the highest realms of motorsport. While the suspension is based on the front and rear axle of the BMW M3 Coupé, the rear axle subframe is bolted firmly in position and the suspension features adjustment threads on the dampers for individual variation of the inbound and rebound strokes.

The high-performance brake system of the BMW M3 GTS features fixed callipers with six pistons up front and four pistons on the rear wheels. The race-oriented set-up of DSC Dynamic Stability Control naturally considers the supreme dynamic potential of the BMW M3 GTS. Different-sized tyres front and rear running on 19-inch M light-alloy Competition rims in double-spoke design ensure optimum transmission of acceleration and brake forces to the road.

Aerodynamics: optimised components with variable geometry.

To optimise the flow of air and adjust the car’s downforce as required, the BMW M3 GTS comes with a race-oriented front air dam and rear wing. This allows appropriate adjustment of the car’s aerodynamic qualities in motorsport and for other purposes, tailored to the specific profile of the respective track. The air guidance units on the front air dam, for example, may be varied in their geometry, just like the position of the rear wing based on the wing already featured on the BMW 320si raced in the WTCC World Touring Car Championship.

Exterior features such as the BMW kidney grille and the gills at the side finished in chrome on the regular BMW M3 come in special dark eloxy-plated chrome on the BMW M3 GTS.

Special interior for supreme performance and safety.

The interior of the BMW M3 GTS clearly reflects the focus on supreme performance and safety on the race track. The interior features include classic bucket seats, interior trim in carbon and an M steering wheel finished in alcantara. The door and side panels at the rear also come in alcantara, while six-point seat belts delivered with the car for subsequent use, a fire extinguisher and preparation for an emergency-off switch in motorsport round off the wide range of special features inside the car.

First Look: 2010 Porsche Boxster Spyder

Oh, the Porsche Boxster. As we recently reaffirmed in our latest comparison test, the little two-seat roadster from Porsche is one of our favorite topless road cars, and now there's more to love. The much-anticipated Boxster Spyder won't make its official debut until December 2nd at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but the details and images have already leaked out ahead of time.

This lightweight, hardcore version of the Boxster starts with the well-received 3.4-liter, direct-injection flat-six engine, though power has been increased by 10 horsepower for a new total of 320. Combined with Porsche's PDK gearbox and Sport Chrono package, the Spyder will jaunt from a stand-still to 60 miles per hour in just 4.6 seconds and will do 166 mph flat out (with the roof off, of course). "Roof," though, is a figurative term with the Spyder, as the Boxster's standard folding lid has been replaced with a lightweight soft top that acts as more of a sunshade than anything else.

Other modifications include a special sport suspension which lowers the ride height by twenty millimeters, a standard limited-slip differential, and exclusive wheels. Aluminum door skins and lightweight interior door panels (from the GT3 RS) aid in reducing the Spyder's weight by 176 pounds over the standard Boxster S, and with a lower center of gravity, we're confident in saying that this thing will be well-suited for hot laps at your local track.

Porsche's newest entry will be the lightest in its line-up

ATLANTA – November 5, 2009 – Weighing in at just 2,811 lbs., the new 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder will be the lightest Porsche available – from a company known for lightweight, proficient sports cars. This new mid-engined roadster represents the true, purist form of the sports car – agile, powerful, open and efficient. This third Boxster model will join the Boxster and Boxster S and will make its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show, December 2, 2009.

The newest member of the Boxster family stands out from the other versions of Porsche's mid-engined roadster. Its low-slung, lightweight soft top – when closed – extends far to the rear to protect the driver and passenger from bright sunshine, wind and weather. This top, when combined with extra-low side windows and two striking bulges on the single-piece rear lid, provides the Boxster Spyder with a sleek silhouette reminiscent of the Carrera GT.

The Boxster Spyder features a 3.4-liter six-cylinder engine with Direct Fuel Injection upfront of the rear axle. Maximum output is 320 horsepower (hp), 10 hp more than the Boxster S. The combination of 10 more hp and 176 pounds less weight than the award-winning Boxster S, plus an all-new sport suspension that lowers the Boxster Spyder 20 mm, a lower center of gravity, a standard limited slip differential, and exclusive wheels provides the kind of driving dynamics that back up the unique look. Aluminum door skins and lightweight interior door panels from the 911 GT3 RS contribute to the weight reduction.

When equipped with Porsche-Doppelkupplung (PDK) transmission and the Sports Chrono Package, the new Spyder, using Launch Control, accelerates from a standstill to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds. Top track speed is 166 mph – with the roof open.

Fundamentally, the entire Boxster family is the successor to the legendary 550 Spyder and RS 60 of the Fifties and Sixties, all sharing the same mid-engine roadster concept. Low weight and supreme agility combine to provide outstanding driving pleasure.

In 2004 and 2008 Porsche produced limited editions of the Boxster bearing the additional name Spyder, honoring the 550 and RS 60. In contrast, the new Boxster Spyder is a regular, but specially developed and upgraded production model as compared with the Boxster and Boxster S.

Report: BMW Planning New M1 (But Not The One You're Thinking Of)

As it stands, the BMW 135i is a potent little machine with its 300-horsepower, twin-turbocharged inline-six. But what about an M version? Sources inside of BMW are now reporting that a 1-Series M might not be too far off, and that the M1 moniker could possibly be brought back, much to the dismay of original M1 enthusiasts.

Speculation suggests that a new M-badged 1-Series would use the same twin-turbo six as the 135i but that power could be increased to around 330 horsepower. A source at BMW's M division says, "We're looking at ways to attract new customers to the brand, and an entry-level model is part of those plans." Naturally, a new "M1" would be priced under the current M3, so the mid-$40K price range is probably as good a guess as any.

Consider our interest piqued.

As if the too-hot Roush 427R wasn't enough, the much-loved tuning company has now put another spin on the 2010 Mustang. As for appearance, this one is much more tame and subtle than some of the cleft-chinned 'Stangs we've driven, but don't let its looks fool you. The supercharger under this Mustang's hood bumps up power to a GT500-matching 540 ponies, and with suspension tweaking on hand, this latest Roush will surely be a hit for muscle car enthusiasts.

IMSA Creates A More Powerful, More Premium Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4

The German Lamborghini tuner, IMSA, has created the IMSA GTV, based on the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4.

Besides adding a carbon fiber body kit, upgraded interior, and new wheels, the IMSA GTV gets an adjustable suspension and stainless steel sport exhaust system. The peak output is now about 582 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque.

New Super Sports Car IMSA GTV based on the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4

  The new Gallardo LP 560 has only just seen the light of the world automobile stage. The result is one of the most exclusive cars of our time; one that presents a perfect symbiosis between extravagant design and driving performance and capability at sports car level. For the Gallardo LP 560-4 the German Lamborghini specialists have once more taken the speedy Italian car and created a masterpiece on wheels in accordance with the IMSA company philosophy. For the Gallardo LP 560-4 the IMSA engineers had to take the special chassis from the GTV's well known predecessor and completely reconstruct it. Thus the chassis modifications now include a front skirt, widened wheel housing for front and rear, sideskirts, a rear skirt as well as special rear spoiler that ensures greater output. All the parts are made of high quality carbon fibre which normally can only be found in professional motor sports or in air travel and which despite its low weight has a convincing stability. Because of its superb technical specifications the IMSA GTV is capable of combing sportiness with an exclusive appearance at the highest level. The same can, of course, also be said for the already internationally established lightweight central locking wheel, IMSA Challenge, which is mounted on the front axle with dimensions of 9J x 20 (with 245/30 ZR20 sized tyres) and on the rear axle with dimensions of 12,5J x 20 (with 325/25 ZR20 sized tyres). The IMSA exclusive wheel is not only visually an eye-opener but it also convinces the ambitious driver with its technical characteristics - especially when combined with the very complex traction and compression phase as well as with its height adjustable IMSA sports suspension. The highly polished IMSA stainless steel sports exhaust system can naturally not be left out of this Gourmet menu. The optical delicacy on the rear of the LP 560 spoils the driver with a really deafening V10 symphony and increases its performance to a sensational 590 PS at 9000U/min thanks to the perfected exhaust gas routing and the connected back pressure reduction. The maximum torque is increased to 560 Nm at 6000 U/min.  As the IMSA GTV is a complete vehicle concept based on the Gallardo LP560-6 the IMSA specialists have also devoted themselves with their usual perfection to the interior of the vehicle. So the first things to strike the eye when opening the passenger door are the exclusive IMSA bucket seats made of carbon, which fit the driver and co-driver like a sitting tailored suit. As the IMSA team traditionally consider the use of high quality materials for its newest super sports car creation to be very important, carbon is naturally used all over for elements in the cockpit. The complete multi-element IMSA carbon interior is very convincing. The whole IMSA GTV including the IMSA sports driving wheel is finished off with IMSA leather and/or Alcantara interior in GTV design.  All in all this is a very tasty high-class menu, that will make several Gallardo owners' mouths water.

Spy Shots: Ferrari 612 Successor Caught Again

Here, we see the successor to the Ferrari 612, which we saw once before earlier this year. This test mule has a longer wheelbase than the 612, which could mean more passenger volume, or Ferrari could be making room for a KERS system. It also has the over/under style tailpipes.

Our photographer also offers the possibility of Ferrari’s four-wheel-drive system, compatible with front- and mid-engine vehicles.

Interestingly, the stickers on the steering wheel warn that the engine should only be started with the hood closed.

After we first sCheck it out in the gallery above, and see what the shooter has to say below.potted the successor for the Ferrari 612 back in April this year, it’s now time again. While the first time was in Italy with both road and track test, it seems like they are up for some high altitude test this time.

It’s still hard to get any idea how the new car will look but it seems like it will be a bit longer this time. Maybe the expected KERS-technology need the space or it will just get a roomier backseat. Other clear things are that the engine still takes too much space so the hood want fit. And what the California started, this new 2+2 V12 coupes will continue to show. The new way to display the exhaust pipes, on top of each other instead of next to each others.

And maybe this time they will introduce the “Insertable 4x4”, a four-wheel drive system developed by Ferrari and suitable for both front and mid-engine cars.

There is still lot of time to figure that out, since this car will first hit the market in late 2011 or early 2012.

First Look: 2011 Lexus LFA Is A High-Revving, High-Dollar Supercar

After many, many rounds of spy shots, the final details and production images have been released of the much-anticipated Lexus LFA supercar, which will have a limited production run of 500 units and will be sold for -- get ready -- $375,000. (Start saving your pennies.)

The details on this thing are nothing short of supercar stock, though its front-engine, rear-drive configuration is a change of pace from the Audis and Lambos that we've learned to love. Still, having 560 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque is nothing to frown at, especially in a car that only weighs 3263 pounds and revs up to a screaming redline of 9000 rpm. 0-62 miles per hour? 3.7 seconds. Top speed? 202 mph. We're ready for some track time.

Tokyo, October 21, 2009 - Lexus announces today the official launch of the LFA, a two-seat supercar scheduled to go into production at the end of 2010 as the pinnacle of the Lexus "F" premium sports car series. Pre-sales start today.
Ultra-responsive and extremely stable even when taken to the edge, the LFA creates a sense of reassurance that opens up a new world of driving emotion, exhilarating the senses to move the driver in more ways than one.
The LFA combines high output, superb chassis design and meticulous aerodynamics to achieve instantaneous total-vehicle response characterized by high-rev, seamless acceleration echoed by a self-defining resonance from its 4.8-liter V10.
Only 500 units of the LFA are to be produced and sold worldwide.
A prototype of the LFA is now on display at the 41st Tokyo Motor Show, which is open to the general public from October 24 to November 4 at Makuhari Messe in Makuhari, Chiba Prefecture.
1. Packaging brings out the most in fundamental performance
Strong and light
The newly developed 4.8-liter V10 engine boasts exceptional power, while lightweight materials (aluminum alloy, magnesium alloy and titanium alloy) and a very compact size (smaller than a conventional V8) allows for optimal weight distribution and an exceptional power-to-weight ratio.
Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) cabin enhances high body-rigidity and reduces weight. This unique cabin is 100kg lighter than a comparable aluminum cabin. Detailed analysis and precise matching of CFRP materials allows for high rigidity and low weight. LFA CFRP production technology, including unique CFRP-to-metal joining, was completely developed by Lexus.
Balanced Relatively higher weight components such as the engine and transmission are placed within the wheelbase. A low center of gravity is made possible by the use of dry sump lubrication1, along with placing peripheral components (oil pump, water pump) behind the engine. Furthermore, optimal placement of the transmission and the fuel tank in front of the rear axle adds to this application of centralized mass. This minimizes weight shift during cornering and contributes to outstanding performance and stability. Lighter weight components, like the radiator and electric fans, are placed behind the rear axle.
Combined with a front-engine and rear-wheel-drive configuration, the short, wide and low body allows the LFA to achieve its target front-to-rear weight distribution of 48:52.
Driver-centered The driver's seat is positioned near the LFA's center of gravity. The centralized seating concept (with the seat between the front and rear axles and closer to the left–right center) is made possible by the use of a rear transaxle and vertically stacked torque tube and exhaust pipes reducing the width of the center tunnel. The driver placement is aimed to provide maximum car-to-driver feedback, especially under sport or high G-force driving conditions.
2. Emotive performance embodies an extraordinary driving experience
High–rev engine
Titanium valves, ultra–light weight rocker arms with a diamond–like coating and a fully integrated lower crankcase that reduces pumping losses at high RPMs combine to provide the driver with overwhelming acceleration right up to the 9,000rpm redline. The LFA's purpose-built V10 delivers 90% of its peak torque between 3,700rpm and 9,000rpm.
Precise Response
Independent, electronically controlled throttle bodies ensure precise air-feed to each of the 10 cylinders, enabling immediate engine response from the accelerator pedal. The engine response time is approximately half the normal response time of a single-throttle valve.
The six-speed ASG transmission features heavy-duty synchronizer rings and a newly developed gearshift actuator, providing the driver with a very direct shift feel. Four selectable driving modes and a seven-stage shift-speed selector that results in upshift speeds down to 0.2 seconds provide a higher level of driver control.
Track-sized high-performance (Carbon Ceramic) CCM brake discs and Electronically Controlled Braking system generate ultra-powerful yet stable braking.
Responsive handling and engaging dynamics
The very light and rigid CFRP cabin, combined with a front double-wishbone suspension and a rear multilink suspension, result in a very stable, controlled ride. Detailed aerodynamic engineering results in elements such as a flat underbody, a diffuser and a speed-controlled rear wing, which allows precise vehicle response at all vehicle speeds, thus creating unity between driver and machine.
Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management integrates numerous vehicle dynamic functions that provide a high level of vehicle stability and preventative safety without interfering with the driver's intentions, especially when sport driving.
Exciting engine sound and L-finesse2 design Equal-length exhaust manifolds combined with an equal-length dual exhaust system routed through a multistage titanium main muffler fine tunes the exhaust note.
An acoustically tuned surge tank linked to 10 individual throttle bodies creates a powerful induction sound. The coordination of intake and exhaust sounds overlap at various RPMs to create a unique, exciting and inspired soundtrack.
The exterior design includes carefully tuned aerodynamics and airflow management. The use of CFRP, in addition to strength and weight advantages, frees up the design of the exterior panels allowing a fresh supercar L-finesse design. The interior design combines state-of-the-art instrument-panel design and technology, along with a variety of custom-tailored interior trim packages to suit the most discerning driver.
