GM to Introduce 16 Hybrids by 2012

It too has now announced that it will have an entire fleet of hybrids. Ok, it didn’t. But, GM will have 16 hybrid models on the market by 2012, CEO Rick Wagoner told reporters at the Geneva Motor Show.

The models will be powered by two different hybrid systems. One is designed for the rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive vehicles (Chevy Tahoe). The other is for the front-wheel-drive vehicles (Saturn Vue).

Wagoner said that GM plans to introduce one hybrid model, on average, every four months until 2012. GM currently offers four hybrid models – the Chevy Tahoe, Chevy Malibu, Saturn Vue, and Saturn Aura.

+ Automotive News: GM: 16 hybrids by 2012

If you’ve got an idea for Question of the Day, a funny photo for Caption It, or just want to share a news tip, let us know at windingroadtips@gmail.com

‘08 Geneva: Tata Nano in the Sheetmetal

Tata's $2500 Nano has been making headlines all over the world since it debuted, but this is the first time we've been able to examine the car in person. It's slightly larger than a Toyota iQ and looks as cheap as you would imagine. When people closed the doors, the entire car shook. We aren't saying that makes the Nano a bad car and we doubt anyone expected it to be bank vault-solid for such a low price.

The Nano looks pretty decent for what it is, but it's hard to judge a car built for markets like India when you're used to seeing half-ton pickups running around as daily drivers. We're sure this car will sell millions of units, and that Ratan Tata will profit handily from the sales. Meanwhile, we're trying to find an excuse to book a flight to India and give the Nano a proper test.

‘08 Geneva: 2009 Toyota iQ

Toyota's iQ, first shown as a concept at last year's Frankfurt show, has come to Geneva dressed in production trim. This tiny car claims seating for three adults as well as room for some luggage. This smart-sized vehicle is set to upstage the Prius as the most fuel efficient vehicle in the Toyota fleet. CO2 emissions are said to be 99 grams per kilometer. The iQ seats two adults in the front, one in the rear, and there should even be room for a small child behind the driver. Though Toyota hasn't yet announced the engine that will power the iQ, we're betting it won't be too happy if asked to push around three adults and a child.

Sales begin this year in Japan and Europeans will be able to purchase a new iQ starting next year.

‘08 Geneva: Think Grows Up With All-Electric Ox Concept

We'll admit it - we hadn't heard much about Norwegian EV-maker Think since its quagmire as a Ford-owned brand, but we were somewhat surprised to find the automaker's presence (albeit in an outdoor tent) at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show. Although the company continues to refine and manufacture the plastic-bodied City electric car, the big news at the show was the premiere of the company's five-door Ox concept.

Looking like a cross between the late Smart ForFour and a (new) Mitsubishi Colt, the Ox carries a sense of style that - admittedly - was absent from the Think range. While the City makes extensive use of low-cost colored plastics both inside and out, the Ox concept carries a level of sophistication that's unusual for a Think product. Yes, we know it is a concept, but the tri-toned interior, complete with seating for five, looks attractive and feels remarkably comfortable for what is, at this time, a flight of fancy. Passengers won't be devoid of technology, either; Think intends for the Ox to be fully connected to the world with an advanced on-board computer and use hands-free keys to open, start, and personalize the vehicle from a ways away.

But as it is with most Thinks, the most important details lie underneath. Riding on a new modular platform designed for a larger vehicle, the Ox remains a pure electric vehicle in an era obsessed with fuel cells and plug-in hybrids. Motive power stems from a 60-kilowatt motor (100-kilowatts are available for 'passing bursts'), allowing the car to reach 62 mph in 8.5 seconds and a top-end of 84 mph. Although the Ox is designed to make use of both low-cost, high-range sodium cell batteries, as well as the vaulted lithium-ion packs. Think won't say what cells were used to make the estimation, but will say they estimate the Ox could have a 124-mile range in combined city and highway drive cycles.

Although showgoers will see the Ox as a micro-MPV, Think's designed the concept's platform to allow for a variety of configurations, including a two-door coupe. Think envisions marketing the Ox in a "sport" configuration, as well as a livery vehicle for taxi service, but the most interesting news stems from the fact that it was designed to meet both European and U.S. vehicle standards. Could this be a sign that Think's thinking of returning to our shores? Only time will tell.

THINK RELEASE

TH!NK Ox - A platform vehicle
TH!NK Ox is a modular platform concept, designed for electric drive vehicles, for both the European, North American and Asian markets. It is the basis for a variety of vehicle styles, starting with the TH!NK Ox Crossover 5-seater. This is possible due to a space frame concept featuring the main crash structure and the batteries centrally placed in two compartments in the lower frame.
The TH!NK Ox picture gallery shows an MPV version and a coupé version. The MPV version is suggested as a taxi with a larger luggage space. The MPV version is designed for easy entry and exit, and a spacious and easy access luggage trunk. The coupé and sports versions have a larger battery capacity for higher performance.

The TH!NK Ox Platform design allows two different standards of battery packs;
- High stack: two compartments, allows use of low cost, high range sodium batteries
- Low stack: gives space for flat Li Ion packs, allows lower/upper frame for sports car and flat flow applications

Scandinavian and clean design Think’s sustainable Scandinavian design has formed the basis for this truly innovative clean car.

TH!NK Ox is distinguished by the TH!NK product family design characteristics. It mimics the clean choice of materials from the TH!NK city, with a prizewinning, unpainted and recyclable exterior and a 95% recyclable interior material concept, made possible through the ABS and PP interior systems. A solar panel in the roof keeps the vehicle’s interior cool when the engine is switched off, or can even supply enough power to run the sound system on the beach.

Think electric drive The base model of the TH!NK Ox will have a 60kW electrical powertrain, capable of accelerating to 100km/hr in less than 8.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 130km/hr. The vehicle will be powered by a choice of either sodium batteries or state-of-the art lithium technology battery packs, allowing optimal adaption to the type of use and geographic region. The lithium-ion batteries will employ a next generation nano-phosphate electrochemistry with an unprecedented combination of power capability, energy density, and safety.

The TH!NK Ox driving range is targeted at 200km for combined highway and city summer driving (US06 driving cycle). For city driving, the TH!NK Ox will be able to travel even further on a full charge, to over 250km. The platform concept also forsees a sports version with a higher top speed and a range extended to up to 450km, a range also relevant for the taxi version.

Easy charging Charging the TH!NK Ox from zero to a fully charged state from a standard 230V/16A European outlet, will take approximately 12 hours using the on-board charger. The Lion batteries can be charged to 80% capacity in less than an hour with a high power off-board fast charger.

As with all TH!NK vehicles, TH!NK Ox can be charged at any normal power point.

TH!NK Ox expressive front grille houses the charging point at a comfortable height, with a pull out cable that fits any normal appliance socket.

Think design
With five seats and an emphasis on interior space and comfort, this vehicle is setting the standard for future EVs. TH!NK Ox combines Scandinavian design and functionality with TH!NK’s unique lines. It is both spacious and sophisticated. The space frame cant rail is a visible styling part, running from the front to the rear wheel arch. An upright tailgate emphasises the distinct TH!NK outline and creates valuable luggage space.

The side indicator lights, prominently placed on the wheel arches, add an innovative look to exemplary functionality. The contrast between the plastic body and the aluminium exterior details such as mirrors, grille and handles, creates a truly different and innovative feel.

The TH!NK Ox interior is designed to give the driver a feeling of openness and comfort. With its large glass surfaces, TH!NK Ox provides a clear view of the traffic. The transparent tailgates allow high visibility for easy city parking. Light materials and clean simple shapes, combined with your own choices of colours and graphic design give you the option to personalise your vehicle. Inbuilt computer screens display all mandatory information as in a standard instrument cluster, plus a variety of interesting and useful functions related to driving, leisure and working.

DNA key-less entry
TH!NK Ox has a key-less entry fob setting that stores and displays the personal choices of the user. When entering the vehicle, your personal desktop, music and for example, e-mails are displayed. Seating position, mirrors and steering wheel are automatically adjusted to suit the user. The DNA-key gives the user feedback on charging status and sends messages, for example, for pre-heat or pre-cool options via GPRS.

The connected car
TH!NK Ox is highly connected, featuring real time navigation, web, e-mail and open source interfaces, intelligent and sustainable driving and route calculations. TH!NK Ox features the TH!NK connectivity platform to enable drivers and passengers to stay tuned at all times. The system also keeps track of the battery performance and allows remote diagnostics at all times.

Always connected
The TH!NK connectivity platform will be built on a fully functional computer. The system will be capable of bringing the power and experience of rich Internet applications into the car, enabling the creation of a whole new genre of smart applications. The combination of GPS and constant Internet connection provides an incredible platform for location-based search, and location-based services adapted to the vehicle.

Location-based services
Drivers will not have to waste energy or time hunting for a parking space: the system will display available parking spaces at the destination, or along the route, provide guidance to a free space, identify and choose a suitable space and even pre-reserve a suitable space for them.

“Clean tech

‘08 Geneva: Pininfarina’s Slinky Sintesi Concept

Ever build a jigsaw puzzle, only to be disappointed with the result? Thankfully, that didn't happen when we saw Pininfarina's Sintesi concept sedan this morning at the Geneva Motor Show. Having been fed small pieces of photography over the past month, we're glad to say that in its entirety, it's a neat looking car.

Demonstrating what Pininfarina deems as "Liquid Packaging," the Sintesi was designed to envelop its occupants, but also make room for advanced powertrain technologies. Powering the car is a hydrogen fuel cell system supplied by Nuvera, delivering up to 80 kW of total power. The clamshell doors (reminiscent of Lamborghini's forgotten Portofino concept) give way to an airy interior, sporting individual bucket seating clad in bright white leather.

Although there are certainly features we'd like to see reach production (we're all for luxury sport sedans), many features of the Sintesi - including the solar cells on the cowl, LED lighting and translucent instrument panel - are certainly show car touches. That said, Pininfarina has - and still - is about the style, and this concept certainly has that.

‘08 Geneva: Mazda2 Hatchback Live Shots

Mazda is displaying a rather attractive three-door hatchback here in Geneva. We're excited to see the little '2 since the five-door car has done so well with sales and awards. The best part is the rumors of bringing the Mazda2 to U.S. shores. We already know the Ford Fiesta will eventually reach the U.S., and it rides on a Mazda2 platform, but we're genuine fans of Mazda's portfolio and would love the option of a smaller car with a little zoom-zoom in the DNA.

Would you rather have a Ford Fiesta hatchback or a Mazda2 hatchback? Let us know which car is more appealing to you in the comments.

‘08 Geneva: GM Tweaks Belt-Alternator Hybrids for 2010; No Shocking Changes

The folks at General Motors are apparently excited about their newest tweaks to their belt-alternator hybrid system for 2010 - but not too excited. Representatives from their Powertrain wing are stoic and mum about any of the particular details. No, they can't comment on motor changes, and there's even less word on what the exact battery specifications will be - other than that the cells will be provided by Hitachi's Vehicle Energy division.

That said, these tweaks - notably the inclusion of a larger motor-generator and a smaller lithium-ion battery pack - will allow the automaker to begin applying the hybrid system in vehicles across the globe. Presently, the only vehicles in the General's portfolio using the "economical" hybrid system are those off the Epsilon (Saturn Aura, Chevrolet Malibu) and Theta platforms (Saturn Vue), although the Chinese W-body Buick LaCrosse is also available with a similar system. GM envisions even compact cars - like the Saab 9-X BioHybrid concept - could be perfect applications for the BAS hybrid.

Moving to lithium-ion batteries allows GM to reduce the physical size of the battery (reportedly now the size of a 12-pack of soda), allowing the entire system to be incorporated in cars of smaller size or different packaging. Representatives wouldn't comment on how these batteries compare to those in the up-and-coming Chevrolet Volt, but battery engineer Andy Loithauser says the cell requirements are different, noting the BAS system is more a "lithium-ion - friendly application" than a PHEV.

Although GM wouldn't mention plans for what vehicles can or would get the revised powertrain, chief engineer Stephen Poulos says the system could be applied to front-, rear- and all-wheel-drive vehicles. GM won't talk specifics about the revised motor-generator, but the larger unit now produces three times the electric boost of the current system - and in theory, says Poulos, could help compliment the performance of a small-displacement turbocharged motor by providing low-end boost while the turbocharger spools.

What GM will say is they expect to move more than 100,000 units with the system on an annual basis after its introduction in 2010. We'd expect the Aura and Malibu to continue offering the system, but small economy cars - like Chevrolet's Cobalt or Saturn's Astra - may be fair game for hybridization, as well.

GM RELEASE

GENEVA - As another key element in its overall global strategy to improve fuel economy and reduce oil consumption and CO2 emissions, General Motors Chairman Rick Wagoner announced today that GM will introduce a second-generation version of the GM Hybrid System with a new, more powerful lithium-ion battery.

Hitachi Vehicle Energy Ltd., a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Hitachi Ltd., will supply an advanced lithium-ion battery, which will help make the next-generation GM Hybrid System nearly three times more powerful than the system it replaces. Overall fuel economy improvements for cars and trucks using the system are expected to be up to 20 percent, depending on engine and vehicle application.

"This new system is another important step in our broad-based strategy to reduce vehicle fuel consumption and emissions," Wagoner said at the 78th International Geneva Motor Show.

The next-generation GM Hybrid System will build upon the successful belt-alternator-starter hybrid technology currently available in the Saturn Vue, Saturn Aura and Chevrolet Malibu. By building on this proven technology, Wagoner said, GM will be able to make the GM Hybrid System more cost-effective and expand its application in GM's global vehicle portfolio.

"In order to have a real impact in reducing oil consumption, oil imports, and CO2 emissions, advanced technologies must be affordable enough to drive high-volume applications," he said. "We plan to roll out this next-generation hybrid technology globally, across our brands and regions, starting in 2010 in North America, and we expect that volumes will eventually exceed 100,000 units annually."

The next-generation GM Hybrid System will complement GM's widely acclaimed Two-Mode Hybrid system as part of the company's advanced powertrain portfolio. The Two-Mode Hybrid system debuted in 2007 in the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, and will be offered this year in the Cadillac Escalade full-size SUV and the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups. The first front-wheel-drive application of the Two-Mode Hybrid system will debut in the 2009 Saturn Vue Green Line.

The increased power from the lithium-ion battery will allow the next-generation GM Hybrid System to be used in a wide range of global powertrains, including naturally aspirated engines, new high-efficiency turbocharged engines, bio-fuel engines and diesels.

This technology is showcased in the Saab 9-X BioPower Hybrid concept car, which debuted today at the Geneva Motor Show. The Saab concept is capable of 117 g CO2/km, or projected fuel consumption of just 4.9 l/100 km (48 mpg) when running on gasoline over the combined cycle.

The next-generation GM Hybrid System helps optimize fuel efficiency and reduce emissions by:

* Turning the engine off at idle
* Offering brief electric-only propulsion
* Using a more powerful electric motor to enhance engine efficiency
* Extending fuel cutoff during deceleration
* Extending regenerative braking to recapture more energy
* Performing intelligent hybrid battery charging

For additional energy savings, an advanced six-speed automatic transmission also may be used, depending on the vehicle application.

The current GM Hybrid System was introduced in 2006 on the Saturn Vue Green Line SUV, which remains the lowest-priced hybrid SUV in the U.S., starting at a $25,995 MSRP. Shanghai GM announced in January that the Buick LaCrosse Eco-Hybrid sedan will be the first application for the current GM Hybrid System in Asia-Pacific.

By the end of 2008, GM will offer eight hybrid models in North America and nine worldwide. GM will introduce 16 new hybrid vehicles over the next four years.

‘08 Geneva: Audi R8 TDI Le Mans Concept

Audi didn't settle for just shipping the R8 TDI concept back from the North American International Auto Show, instead it built a shiny new R8 TDI to honor the success of the R10 sports car at the Le Mans races. We're digging the red paint and wishing for production confirmation for this blazing oil-burner. The vital stats are the same for this car as they were for the R8 TDI concept in Detroit, but that doesn't mean we're sick of dreaming about this incredible Audi.

Outstanding Torque for the Top Class
Audi R8 TDI Le Mans

Audi is presenting a revolution in the top class – the first 12-cylinder diesel engine in a high-performance roadgoing sports car. The V12 TDI with a displacement of six liters powers a concept car based on the Audi R8. This unit generates a huge 500 hp and 1,000 Newton-meters (737.56 lb-ft) of torque. Audi is writing a new chapter in diesel technology with this power unit. Equipped with the expertise that Audi has built up through its motor sport activities, the R8 TDI Le Mans in Brilliant Red embodies superb road handling, pioneering technology and fascinating design.

The V12 TDI is closely related to the engine in the Audi R10, the two-time Le Mans winner – so it catapults the Audi R8 into supercar terrain concerning performance too. It sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 4.2 seconds and its top speed is well over 300 km/h (186.41 mph). The peak torque, reached at only 1,750 rpm, paves the way for effortless acceleration that is unrivaled even at this level.

The new V12 TDI belongs to Audi's family of V engines but has the ideal included angle for this engine type of 60 degrees between cylinder banks. Its highlights include the new chain drive layout that includes the two newly developed high-pressure pumps for the common rail injection system.

Its sound is as thrilling as you'd expect in a sports car of this caliber. For all the subtle smoothness that typifies this design principle, the twelve-cylinder unit is full-bodied and equipped with energetic overtones that make no secret of its performance potential.

The Genes of the Winner

Thanks to their high performance and pulling power, all Audi TDI engines are ultra-dynamic sources of power. The brand has often enough demonstrated its sporty character in its production cars, especially the six- and eight-cylinder 3.0 TDI and 4.2 TDI. Audi has also been writing a new chapter in its success story on the racetrack since 2006. The diesel engine in the R10 sports prototype won its very first endurance race at Sebring, Florida, when it was pitted against an entire field of gasoline-engined challengers. But its most crucial victories were surely in 2006 and 2007 in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, when it simply outclassed the international elite.

The V12 TDI race engine in the R10 produces over 650 hp from a displacement of 5.5 liters, giving it the potential for a top speed as high as 330 km/h (205.05 mph) depending on the gear ratios. Its power and sturdiness immediately impressed both fans and experts, who were impressed by its restrained noise level. Unusual for a race engine, this powerful Audi diesel makes barely more than a whisper.

Long traditions of motor racing and production technology complement each other at Audi. The FSI engine of the R10's predecessor, the R8, captured five wins at Le Mans with a direct gasoline injection system. Audi is also looking to maximize the advantage by using the race-tested FSI principle in its production models. The latest examples of this are the V8 with high-revving concept in the RS 4 and the production version of the Audi R8.

The Drivetrain

The roadgoing version of the new V12 TDI is built at the Györ plant, in Hungary. And the R8 TDI Le Mans still has a massive 500 hp on tap. In developing the six-liter engine, it was a clear priority to integrate it into the current family of Audi V engines, of which many thousands of versions with 6, 8 and 10 cylinders have already been built – both gasoline and TDI.

Audi's engineers were in an ideal position to use their experience building the racing engine to develop the road version. Like the other power units in this range, the distance between cylinder bore axes on the V12 TDI is 90 mm (3.54 in.). Yet its included angle is 60 degrees, not 90 degrees. This means no free inertial forces or mass moments of inertia can occur with the V12. The results are refined in every respect.

The 83.0 mm (3.27 in.) bore and 91.4 mm (3.60 in.) stroke produce a total displacement of 5,934 cc – just like the 3.0 TDI. At only 684 mm (26.93 in.) long, this large diesel engine is very compact and just 166 mm (6.54 in.) longer than the V8 TDI. This compact length is key to accommodating the V12 in the mid-engined Audi R8.

The V12 TDI crankcase is made from gray cast iron with vermicular graphite – a high-tech material referred to as GJV-450 that is already used on the V6 and V8 TDI engines. GJV-450, made by a patented casting process, is about 40 percent more rigid and 100 percent more fatigue-resistant than gray cast iron. This enabled the developers to make its walls thinner, cutting its weight by around 15 percent compared with conventional gray cast iron.

The two cylinder heads are each made from three main elements. These are a base section made from a high-strength aluminum alloy incorporating the intake and exhaust ports, an oil-bearing upper section, and a reinforcing ladder frame supporting the two camshafts.

The valves are actuated by low-friction roller cam followers; the compression ratio is 16.0:1. Map-controlled swirl variation of the combustion air has been adopted from the V6 and V8 TDI engines. This produces permanently optimized swirl concerning both emissions and high performance.

Ultramodern Injection Technology

As is the case in the Audi V engines, the no-maintenance chain drive is mounted at the back of the engine, where it occupies little space. Its layout has changed on the new V12 TDI. The camshafts' sprocket engages in an intermediate gear via which two Simplex chains drive the camshafts. Two more chains drive the oil pump and the two high-pressure pumps actuate the common rail injection system.

The two new dual-piston high-pressure pumps form part of the common rail injection system supplied by specialty manufacturer Bosch. The two pumps build up a pressure of up to 2,000 bar in the rails. The piezo injectors with eight-hole nozzles have also been fundamentally revised.

The high pressure distributes the mixture optimally throughout the combustion chamber. The result is that the ignition process is faster, more homogeneous and more acoustically refined. The more efficient combustion process also increases power output, cuts consumption and reduces pollutant emissions.

The current generation of so-called inline injectors makes effective use of the piezo effect: piezo crystals expand in a fraction of a millisecond when an electrical voltage is applied. The number of injection processes per operating cycle can be varied across a wide range thanks to piezo technology – reaching as many as five fuel injection operations in the case of the V12 TDI.

As well as the main injection, pilot and post injections are possible. Pilot injections tone down the acoustic harshness of the combustion process. Retarded post injections are designed specifically to increase the temperature of the exhaust gas, promoting regeneration of the two standard particulate filters.

The two turbochargers are located on the outside of the engine's V, each of them supplying one bank of cylinders. Thanks to their variable turbine geometry, the full flow of exhaust gas always passes through the turbine, so the chargers respond slickly – even at low engine speeds – and operate very efficiently.

The two turbochargers, which generate up to 2.6 bar of boost pressure, play a crucial role in producing the huge torque of 1,000 Nm (737.56 lb-ft) that the V12 TDI maintains from 1,750 rpm to 3,000 rpm. In developing 368 kW (500 hp), the diesel achieves a specific output of 62.0 kW (84.3 hp) per liter displacement.

Two large intercoolers reduce the temperature of the compressed air. The V12 has a twin-pipe exhaust system with two particulate filters. The intake system is similar in structure with one air cleaner per cylinder bank, with an airflow meter behind it. Two control units, sharing the workload in a master/slave principle, manage events in the engine.

The Audi R8 TDI Le Mans already fulfills the Euro 6 emissions standard that is likely to take effect in 2014 and calls for sharply reduced nitrogen oxides. By also designing in ultra-precise fuel metering by the common rail system, Audi's engineers have made full use of current clean diesel technology.

The heart of the system is a special catalytic converter downstream of the oxidizing catalyst and the particulate filter. The second component in the system is an additional tank containing an aqueous urea solution. Small quantities of the solution, known as "AdBlue," are injected into the exhaust system. The hot exhaust gases break the solution down to form ammonia that splits the nitric oxides into nitrogen and water. The system remains effective for the entire service life of the vehicle.

The dynamic character of a sports car depends not just on its performance and torque; the transmission ratios have to be right too. In keeping with the character of a high-performance sports car with unbeatable torque potential, the transmission in the R8 TDI Le Mans has six manually operated gears.

The manual transmission is very compact in design. Together with the small-diameter double-plate clutch, this means it can be installed low down. The manual transmission has very short shift travel and utterly precise guiding of the shifter into the open gear lever gate. It is made from polished aluminum, has an agreeable feel and exquisite sports car looks.

Such a high-performance Audi also has quattro permanent all-wheel drive. In the case of this mid-engine sports car, power is distributed variably between the front and rear wheels from a starting ratio of 40:60 to optimize the handling.

The Design

The R8 TDI Le Mans with Brilliant Red bodywork looks even wider and more resolute than the core model. It shows its potential through its muscular proportions, accentuated wheel arches and even larger air apertures. The rhombus-pattern cover on the air inlets and outlets is the hallmark of Audi's sporty top models and a familiar feature of the current RS generation.

Typical of the side view of the R8 is the sideblade. Much wider in the bottom third, it visually accentuates the engine's position as well as acting as an enlarged air deflector.

The continuous aluminum spoiler lip that connects the front and rear diffusers with side air baffles below the enlarged sills also pays tribute to this version's highly developed dynamic talents.

And yet the R8 is unmistakable for its powerful, elegant basic proportions. The selective but always precise use of lines is another typical Audi characteristic, as is the curved arc of the roof. One new aspect is the glass roof of the passenger compartment with two large transparent sections. These, together with the glazed engine compartment behind, create a radically new formal element. The unmistakable NACA duct in the middle of the roof is a functional detail that is normally reserved for racing cars. Its ingenious shape accelerates the air drawn in here for the two cylinder banks of the V12 TDI engine.

The V12 TDI is displayed as the beating heart of this sports car, like a work of art inside a large showcase. Its look, underscored by the air deflectors located beneath the restyled rear glass lid, differs clearly from its production counterpart. The engine can even be seen after dark, when white light-emitting diodes illuminate the engine compartment – as on the production R8 version. This "showroom" can additionally be fully lined in genuine carbon fiber, for a particularly exclusive look.

The continuous line running from the front apron across the wheel arches and flanks to the tail end, then back down the other side, is one of the latest design hallmarks of the Audi brand. This "loop" naturally encompasses the air apertures, the headlights and the taillights.

Unmistakable Face by Day and Night

The passion expressed through the elaborate design of the lights is another typical Audi trait. Nor is anyone likely to overlook this Audi sports car from behind: the LED taillights have a three-dimensional look that can't be missed.

But the absolute highlight is the all-LED headlights of the study vehicle. With their lenses and reflectors, not only do these innovative light sources have a ground-breaking appearance, they also have an enormous functional advantage: LED light, with its color temperature of 6,000 Kelvin, resembles daylight much more closely than xenon or even halogen light. Better light means the driver will have much less fatigue when driving at night.

Ergonomic and Elegant

The interior's design is as sporty and exclusive as the exterior: the characteristic element here is the monoposto – an expansive arc running around the steering wheel and instruments, connecting the driver to the car. The interior consequently picks up on the dynamism of the R8 TDI Le Mans and gives it tactile expression in a form that is accessible the moment you climb in.

The three-spoke sport steering wheel of course remains the focal point of the car's controls. With a diameter of 365 mm (14.37 in.), it is both sportily compact and ergonomic in shape. The steering wheel rim has a flat lower edge. This is a further aspect of the auto racing feel in the Audi R8 TDI Le Mans, but one that also brings major functional benefits, facilitating entry and exit for the driver. The steering wheel is covered in fine Valcona leather, with a diecast magnesium core providing strength.

The start/stop button for the engine and the Drive Select switch with the Dynamic/ Sport/Race settings are arranged on the steering wheel. The latter controls the engine and transmission electronics as well as the magnetic ride dampeners in each of three different modes.

In Race mode, the instrument lighting changes from white to red. The navigation system shows a combined display with lap timer and navigation information for the racetrack being driven. Or supplementary information such as centrifugal force and boost pressure can be called up.

Concentrating on the essentials was the priority in the ergonomic arrangement of all Audi R8 versions. The most important consideration – particularly for high-speed driving – is short reach distances for all controls, to keep the time that the driver has only one hand on the steering wheel to a bare minimum. In typical Audi style the monitor is well within the field of view, and the elements of the MMI operating system are located directly below it.

Compared with the production version, the R8 TDI Le Mans's interior has much larger aluminum applications, especially around the center console. The many carbon fiber elements give the interior a decidedly sporty feel.

The R8's exceptional everyday practicality for a sports car is maintained in the study vehicle's spaciousness, even though the longer engine takes up more room. The two occupants have the generous wheelbase of 2.65 meters (8.69 ft.) to thank for the interior comfort. This means the driver and passenger will always be able to find their perfect seated position, whatever their build. The view is also very good for a mid-engine vehicle. Narrow A-posts optimize the field of view to the front and sides.

Light but Highly Rigid Body

The body of a sports car needs to be particularly light and rigid. Low weight permits superior road performance, and rigidity is the crucial starting point for an agile driving feel allied to high precision. The Audi Space Frame body, made from aluminum, provides the ideal basis for this.

Audi has more expertise than any other manufacturer worldwide in the design and production of vehicles based on aluminum technology, and has channeled its accumulated know-how into this area.

The entire bodyshell of the study car weighs just 210 kilograms (462.97 lbs.). In ASF technology, the body's supporting structure is made of extruded aluminum sections and die-castings. Aluminum panels are incorporated into this skeleton to form a positive connection and perform a load-bearing role. Each individual component of the ASF space frame is optimized for its specific task by the use of widely differing shapes and cross-sections, combining maximum stability with minimal weight. It adds up to a car that's particularly light and rigid, an outcome that can be felt in the R8's ultra-precise driving feel.

The aerodynamics experts at Audi have done their work so thoroughly on the study car that, as an added benefit of its elegant shape, the body actually generates downforce – unlike many other sports cars. This aids directional stability at high speeds. It is achieved partly by means of an extending rear spoiler that is much larger than on the production version, and also thanks to the fully clad diffuser underbody.

Two large-format diffuser apertures in the rear bumper demonstrate just how much aerodynamics dictate the shape of the study vehicle. The tailpipes of the exhaust system are located in pairs on the right and left above the diffuser apertures. The add-on, automatically extended rear spoiler also interacts with the air as it flows around the car. The extra downforce it provides increases the efficiency of the air intake generated by the aerodynamic design of the underbody and diffusers. At low speeds, the rear spoiler returns to its initial position.

Chassis

The precision chassis of the Audi R8 TDI Le Mans remains supremely in control of the sporty performance, but is capable of assuring relaxed driving pleasure over long distances too. The sports car is spontaneous and agile at obeying steering movements, always demonstrating exceptionally good driving safety. The suspension, with double wishbones at both the front and rear, is optimized for a neutral self-steering response and maximum ease of control.

The study car, too, has the innovative dampening technology known as Audi magnetic ride. This adapts the chassis characteristic to the profile of the road and the driver's style within milliseconds.

Ceramic Brakes with Extreme Reserves

A generously dimensioned brake system supplies the necessary braking force. It applies a total of 24 pistons to the four brake disks, combining excellent performance with minimal weight and high durability. The disks are made from carbon fiber reinforced ceramic, a material that has repeatedly proven its worth in the aviation and aerospace sectors. The basis is very hard, frictionally resistant silicon carbide, with its diamond-like crystalline structure. Embedded in it are high-strength carbon fibers that absorb the stresses occurring in the material. The intricate geometry of cooling ducts in the ventilated disks prevents extremely high temperatures. The ceramic brake disk ring is bolted by 10 spring-loaded elements to a stainless steel central element that acts as the connection with the wheel's hub.

The ceramic brakes are identifiable at a glance by the special red, six-piston monobloc aluminum calipers and the fixed calipers at the rear. The advantages of the ceramic brakes include a further reduction in weight of around 20 kilograms (44.09 lbs.), which in this case improves the handling characteristics and comfort. The high abrasion resistance permits an operating life of up to 300,000 kilometers (186,411 miles). Their key strength, however, is their ability to withstand very high loads. Even on the racetrack, for example, the ceramic brakes always maintain their full reserve performance.

Vorsprung durch Technik: Diesel Milestones from Audi

Audi has reached another milestone in diesel technology with the new V12 TDI. The brand with the four rings has been performing vital pioneering work in this area for the past three decades. The first TDI auto engine made its debut in 1989. The 2.5 liter five-cylinder power unit developed 88 kW (120 hp) and 261 Nm, catapulting diesel driving into an entirely new dimension.

This was followed in 1994 by a development version generating 103 kW (140 hp). This engine was optionally available with all-wheel drive – the first TDI quattro model. A new four-cylinder diesel appeared at that time in the Audi 100 and Audi 80, the 1.9 TDI developing 66 kW (90 hp) that has now become legendary.

At the end of 1995 the output of this four-cylinder unit rose to 85 kW (115 hp) with the advent of pump-injector fuel injection. Slightly more than one year later, at the start of 1997, the world's first 2.5 V6 TDI appeared.

With four valves per cylinder, it achieved an output of 110 kW (150 hp), and its top speed of 220 km/h (136.70 mph) made the Audi A8 the fastest production diesel on the market. The first eight-cylinder TDI followed in 1999 – a V8 engine with a 3.3 liter capacity. The 3.0 TDI made its debut early in 2004 as the first V6 diesel with inline piezo injectors in the common rail system.

The 4.2 liter TDI launched in the A8 in 2005 is currently at the vanguard of Audi's TDI range. One in three A8 buyers in Germany chose this V8 engine. The next logical step was to make the V8 TDI available in the Audi Q7 in summer 2007.

With extremely clean, ultra-low emission technology, Audi is continuing its tradition of leadership in diesel engine technology. In 1989 it was the Ingolstadt brand that developed direct injection technology. Since then the diesel engine has become around 30 percent more efficient.

The Euro 4 European emission standard has reduced particulate emissions for cars by 93 percent. Long before it came into force, Audi had models on the market that met this standard, even without a particulate filter. And the brand will be offering the world's cleanest diesel engines in production vehicles in 2008. The TDI engines with the ultra-low emission system will be the first in the world to meet the forthcoming EU 6 emission standard as well as the toughest known statutory limits that apply in the U.S.

‘08 Geneva: It’s a Party for Ford’s 2009 Fiesta

Not two hours into the press week for the Geneva Auto Show, and Ford's stand was already rocking with hordes of journalists crowded around the new Fiesta. We're not surprised - the production car, making its production debut here in Switzerland, is a more-than-attractive entry into the B-car segment.

Most of the Fiesta's form carries directly from the trilogy of Verve concepts, especially that of the three-door hatchback shown at last year's Frankfurt show. What is a surprise is the five-door hatch, which - although never shown in concept form - keeps most of the three-door's looks without any sacrifice of style.

The Fiesta launches in Europe later this year with both gasoline and diesel variants, with petrol motors including a 59- and 79-horsepower 1.25-liter I-4, a 90-horsepower 1.4-liter I-4, and a range-topping 1.6-liter four-banger, delivering 113 horsepower. Diesel offerings include 1.4- and 1.6-liter I-4 common-rail turbodiesels, rated at 67 and 89 horsepower, respectively. A five-speed manual is standard on all offerings, although a four-speed automatic is optional with the 1.4-liter gasoline motor.

Most of those power options won't be available for the North American Fiesta, which will also be sold primarily as a conventional sedan. Ford's reportedly investigating the viability of the hatches in the 'States, so tell us - what do you think of the production Fiesta - and do you want one in hatchback form?

FORD RELEASE

Ford of Europe is reinventing its small car range for a new generation of customers in 2008, starting with a stylish and exciting all-new Fiesta. The car makes its global debut in both three- and five-door hatchback bodystyles at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show.

Designed and developed in Europe for sale in Europe, Asia, South Africa, Australia and the Americas between 2008 and 2010, the new Fiesta is the first major product of Ford’s new global product development process. Its stylish and dynamic flair combines with all the traditional Ford small car strengths to create a confident, contemporary introduction to the next chapter of the Fiesta success story.

The new Fiesta opens another chapter in the story of the popular Ford small car that has sold more than 12 million units since its introduction in 1976. Charismatic and individual, the new model makes major strides in craftsmanship, quality of materials and product choice while continuing to represent Fiesta’s traditional strengths of practicality, value for money, agility and safety. It also brings a host of big-car features to the small-car segment for the first time.

New Fiesta clearly embodies the hallmarks of 'kineticdesign', which has so convincingly infused emotion into the core of the Ford range in Europe. The Geneva debut confirms that new Fiesta will bring the most appealing elements of Verve, a trio of concept cars shown recently around the world, to production reality.

It also ends speculation surrounding the name of Ford’s new-generation small car for global markets.

“This new car embodies the very essence of Fiesta – fun, vitality and emotion,

‘08 Geneva: Air Your Thoughts on Saab’s 9-X BioHybrid Concept

"What do you think of the 9-X's front fascia?" "Would you buy a vehicle like the 9-X?" These weren't the remarks of worried Saab executives, but questions posed to those viewing Saab's 9-X BioHybrid concept. Computer stations surrounding the car - all using the chouette new Macbook Air - will keep a digital tally, allowing the bosses in Trollhattan to see just how well their show car fared.

As well they should. Although it currently carries the usual show car flare and extravagance, we hear this is a pretty good peek at a forthcoming 9-1 compact. Thus far, the look is rather nice - the front carries the traditional Saab graphic, although the rear form is certainly a break from tradition. The narrow LED taillamps, set within slim bezels in a cyan plastic surround, remind us slightly of the current Subaru Impreza, but moreso of Chevrolet's conceptual Volt.

Perhaps tying to that last cue isn't coincidence; the 9-1 is slated to make use of GM's next-generation Delta platform along with the vaulted Volt. That said, Saab hasn't seen fit to make use of the e-Flex system in this concept, opting instead to fit the 9-X with a 200-horsepower 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4. It is fitted with GM's next-generation hybrid system, but details on that won't be available until later this afternoon (stay with WINDING ROAD for the latest announcements from Geneva).

For those who aren't able to travel to Saab's stand and voice their opinion in person, tell us what you think of the 9-X. What styling cues work or don't work on the car? What features would you enjoy or expect on the production 9-1? Leave your thoughts in the comments section below.

Geneva ‘08: Saab 9-X BioHybrid Concept

Saab has announced its new hybrid compact, the 9-X BioHybrid Concept – which will bow officially at the Geneva Motor Show in the coming hours.

The 9-X BioHybrid is built upon GM’s new global compact Delta platform, which also includes the Opel Astra, Chevy Cobalt and Volt. In fact, it seems to share that elongated front end with the Volt concept. Based on the size, the 9-X will likely be called the 9-1 if it makes it into production.

Under the hood, the 9-X features a 200 horsepower, 1.4-liter turbocharged engine, paired with GM’s next-gen hybrid system. The 9-X also features extra battery-charging capabilities with a roof-mounted solar panel.

Check back later for more details while we cover the Geneva Motor Show.

PRESS RELEASE:

Saab 9-X BioHybrid:

Boosting Efficiency in Compact Design and Performance

The Saab 9-X BioHybrid concept is a vivid vision of what a future compact car from Saab could look like. It is designed to reflect the priorities of youthful customers who seek progressive looks, responsible performance and high-tech communications, all in a sporty, fun-to-drive package.

Exploring design themes from Saab’s award-winning Aero X and earlier 9X concepts, the 9-X BioHybrid also demonstrates the potential for ultra-efficient power from a 200 hp (147 kW), 1.4-liter BioPower turbo engine backed by GM’s next-generation Hybrid system. Projected combined cycle CO2 emissions of just 105 g/km on E85 fuel are testimony to the promise of this package (see separate release for details).

The interior showcases an entirely new expression of Saab’s driver-focused cockpit design, together with innovative, seamless connectivity for personal nomadic devices and a rear cargo deck with a ‘low friction’ loading system.

“This car is all about efficiency in design and performance,

Combustion Three Ways: The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel

Lotus has announced that it will be bringing yet another version of its highly regarded Exige sports car to the Geneva Motor Show, this one serving as a test bed for sustainable, synthetic alcohol fuels.

The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel is built to allow drivers the option of running any of three fuels, gasoline, bioethanol, or methanol. Among the many benefits of being run on alcohol-based fuels, Lotus points to the potential of harvesting atmospheric CO2 as a major step forward in sustainability, and carbon-neutral transportation. Though the company does admit that the infrastructure necessary for such production is a decade or more away.

The Tri-fuel also happens to be the most powerful road-going Exige ever, wringing 270 horsepower from its 1.8-liter supercharged engine, and managing a 0-60 sprint in just 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 158 mph.

Lotus Researches Cars Running On CO2 Exige 270E Tri-fuel is the next stage of Lotus Engineering’s long-term sustainable, synthetic alcohol researchLotus Engineering, the world renowned automotive consultancy division of Lotus, unveils its latest development towards carbon neutral road transport at the 78th Geneva International Motor Show. The Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel is the most powerful road version yet of the Exige (0-60 mph / 96 kph in 3.88 seconds, a top speed of 158 mph (255 km/h), 270 hp (201 kW / 273 PS at 8000 rpm) and it runs on any mixture of gasoline, bioethanol and methanol. Emerging technologies will allow alcohol fuels such as methanol, already a proven internal combustion fuel, to be made synthetically from CO2 extracted from the atmosphere.

An alcohol-based fuel derived renewably from atmospheric CO2 would allow society to transfer relatively easily to sustainable, carbon-neutral internal combustion. Lotus Engineering is researching the use of sustainable synthetic alcohols as potential future fuels, with technology available from Lotus for introduction in four to five years. However, the supply infrastructure investment from governments and fuel companies could take 15 to 20 years.

The Exige 270E Tri-fuel is part of Lotus’ research to understand the complex combustion process involved in running on mixtures of alcohol fuels and gasoline, which will be important for a successful transition from today’s fuels to the sustainable, synthetic fuels of the future.

This research is just one aspect of Lotus Engineering’s ground-breaking work on environmentally-friendly vehicles. It is involved with a number of electric vehicle projects, has successfully integrated hybrid technologies into vehicles such as its EVE demonstrator, and recently announced results on a collaboration with Continental Division Powertrain on the Low CO2 downsized three-cylinder engine. The research into sustainable alcohols is progressing at Lotus’ Hethel headquarters in Norfolk, UK and involves input from the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Alternative Fuel Symposium Series, the Low Carbon Vehicles Innovation Platform, developed by the Technology Strategy Board and direct discussions with the University of Sheffield.

Methanol (CH3OH) can be produced synthetically from CO2 and hydrogen. Ultimately, emerging processes to recover atmospheric CO2 will provide the required carbon that can entirely balance the CO2 emissions at the tailpipe that result from the internal combustion of synthetic methanol. The result is that a car running on synthetic methanol, such as the Exige 270E Tri-fuel would be environmentally neutral.

As well as being green, the great benefit of synthetic methanol is that it would use similar engines and fuel systems to those in current cars; and synthetic methanol can be stored, transported and retailed in much the same way as today’s liquid fuels such as gasoline and diesel.

Synthetic methanol also possesses properties better suited to internal combustion than today’s liquid fuels, giving improved performance and thermal efficiencies. And it is ideal for pressure-charging (turbocharging and supercharging) already being introduced by manufacturers to downsize engines in a bid to improve fuel consumption.

Lotus Engineering’s Lotus Exige 270E Tri-fuel technology demonstrator illustrates how easy it is for synthetic methanol to be embraced over time as a future fuel for road transport. The Exige 270E Tri-fuel, with its supercharged 2ZZ-GE VVTL-i engine, could be the forefather of a new generation of conventionally driven cars that have the potential to be environmentally-neutral.

Mike Kimberley, Chief Executive Officer of Group Lotus plc, explains: “Lotus is a world-class leader in research into a variety of alternative fuels; each has its merits and challenges and some options could be more easily implemented than others. But while motorists want to be green, we do not want to change the culture of total freedom for the owners, who will have an extreme reluctance to spend more at the pump, or to sacrifice the performance of their cars.

Mike Kimberley continues, “At present, the motor industry is seeking a route to reduce CO2 emissions just at the tailpipe; this focus is far too narrow. A sustainable alcohol such as synthetic methanol has the potential to reduce the overall CO2 footprint of internal combustion vehicles towards zero. Produced through CO2 recovered from the atmosphere and given a tax incentive, it immediately becomes a green, cheap and more desirable fuel. For those compelling reasons motorists, legislators and car manufacturers must switch to a sustainable alcohol like synthetic methanol.

Italdesign Quaranta Concept Fully Revealed

While Italdesign’s last set of teaser images basically told the world what its new Quaranta concept was all about, we’ve now found a new group of pictures that fully let the cat out of the bag.

In addition to getting the full monty visually on the Quaranta, new details about the car’s drivetrain have emerged as well. The concept is said to use a hybrid system based on Toyota’s Synergy Drive, powering all four wheels to a 0-62 mph sprint of four seconds, and a top speed of 155 mph. Curiously the car is said to have room for four adults, and one child-sized passenger. We’re really looking forward to see how that breaks down, as well as getting a glimpse inside of the dark and swooping glasshouse.

Check out the latest Quaranta images in our gallery, and stay tuned for all the concept goodness, live from Geneva next week.

+ Motor Authority: Update: Giugiaro Quaranta concept revealed

If you’ve got an idea for Question of the Day, a funny photo for Caption It, or just want to share a news tip, let us know at windingroadtips@gmail.com

Geneva ‘08: Magna Steyr Mila Alpin Concept

Austrian-based Magna Steyr has announced its third concept vehicle in its Mila family, the Mila Alpin, will debut at next week’s Geneva Motor Show.

The Mila Alpin is a compact-SUV designed for off-road, capable of scaling 45-degree inclines. The baby-SUV will be powered by a 3-cylinder CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) hybrid engine. It reportedly will seat 3 + 1.

Check back during the Geneva Motor Show for more details.

PRESS RELEASE:

MILA Alpin: Compact Off-Roader with Alternative Drive Options

MAGNA STEYR presents the third concept vehicle in the MILA innovation family at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show.

The MILA Alpin is a compact off-roader with a body specially designed for integrating various different types of alternative drives. This means: Excellent all-terrain capability, wide-ranging uses and emissions of under 100 g CO2 per kilometer.

Creating an attractive vehicle was by no means MAGNA STEYR's only priority in the MILA Alpin project. The entire product development process was also designed always to make assembly as cost-efficient as possible – whatever the market demands.
A new vehicle segment

Its unique configuration makes the MILA Alpin a vehicle that stands out because of its excellent all-terrain capability and outstanding rough road characteristics. As a result, it is not only suitable for recreation but also as a utility vehicle for special uses. What allows such wide-ranging applications is the mid-engine layout with a low-cost, but effective all-wheel drive system. Its climbing ability is impressive: 100% or 45 degrees. On the road, too, exceptional handling makes the MILA Alpin great fun to drive. What's more, the hybrid drive using natural gas reduces the impact on the environment.

The MILA Alpin's shape language also adds to its attraction – inspired by Nature, its lines are as clear as rock and ice.
Engineering

The engineers at MAGNA STEYR set themselves the challenge of developing an off-roader in several variants with maximum climbing ability – all at low cost. And they certainly succeeded.

The frame consists of straight sections, which are made of different materials to guarantee low weight and enable a flexible body concept. Modular design makes it easier to use components and systems from volume production and combine them with various different innovative modules and optional extras. Thanks to independent suspension and ESP, the chassis guarantees safe on-road characteristics. The mid-engine layout ensures good traction. The considerable ground clearance, large overhang angles, option of locks in the transfer case and axle drives, and low crawling speed all go to make driving safe and relaxed off the road.

A higher sitting position that is relatively far forward and large panoramic roof give the driver and passengers perfect visibility. The MILA Alpin has 3 + 1 seats.

There is also the option of a CNG drive, a hybrid or a small, supercharged gasoline engine.
From concept to reality

To manufacture a vehicle with low production volume and high number of variants economically, tool investment has to be reduced as far as possible. This fact in particular was taken into account when designing the MILA Alpin. Given the modular design, automation can be kept at a low level and, at the same time, flexibility in assembly at a high level. The MILA Alpin concept can therefore be used for volume production without any problems – especially by a flexible specialist in engineering and vehicle assembly, such as MAGNA STEYR. The requirements for production have been met by optimizing the overall process and the individual systems at every stage of development. This approach also enables the costs of any subsequent modifications due to market demand to be kept down to a minimum.

All the innovative components, such as energy storage systems, and the expertise for hybrid drives stem from in-house advance development.

MAGNA STEYR has developed and designed the vehicle to be brand neutral. It can therefore be built together with various OEMs.

The MILA Alpin:
• Compact off-roader with alternative drive options
• CO2 reduction as optional extra
• Wide-ranging uses
• Optimized product development chain (reduction in tool investment; cost-effective, flexible production)

+ World Car Fans: Magna Steyr MILA Alpin Concept at Geneva

Morgan to Bring LifeCar Fuel Cell Sports Concept to Geneva Motor Show

Small British automaker Morgan will be bringing an innovative, and rather beautiful concept car to its stand at the Geneva Motor Show, a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle based on the Aero 8 called the LifeCar Concept.

LifeCar is a project that was started all the way back in 2005, with the goal of designing a zero emissions vehicle that is still exhilarating to drive. The car’s architecture is designed around the needs of a fuel cell, with a great emphasis put on reducing vehicle weight. The resultant design is one that is said to minimize fuel cell cost while providing a range of around 200 miles.

The fuel cell itself uses not only hydrogen, but also oxygen from the air around it, converting both into electricity. This energy is then stored in “ultra capacitors
