Charlie Rose Talks Design With Leaders From GM, Hyundai, and Tesla
Charlie Rose, that iconic PBS television interviewer who sits in the middle of a dark room, recently hosted a design discussion with some captains of our industry. It’s well worth your hour (after work, of course) as Rose is known as sort of an anti-Larry King—in other words, he actually does a world of research before his interviews. His love of technology is well documented and, in this video, it appears he’s got a car bug as well.
Rose sits down with design bosses Ed Welburn of General Motors, Joel Piaskowski of Hyundai, and Franz “Hollywood” von Holzhausen who is now at Tesla (most recently at Mazda).

I watched Rose's discussion with Bob Lutz and came away pleased with Lutz's grasp of reality. I respect his firm belief that global warming's cause is natural (though I don't agree with it), but it is better for him to keep a tight lip on that attitude because GM is facing an outspoken environmentalist movement hostile to the company after all the bad press it had from the EV1 demolition

I don't think anyone that truly believes global warming is caused naturally could be said to have a firm grasp of reality. The evidence is overwhelming and for anyone to disagree is just ignoring what's been made very clear by environmental scientists. It's good that there is more of a concern by shareholders about the environment, but the bottom line is that GM decided to ignore what was happening in the world and continued making over sized vehicles that were very fuel efficient. GM deserves to be bankrupt for the choices it's made in the past, and the choices it continues to make.

The typical U.S. consumer needs a car to drive to work and get around, typically in the suburbs. To keep up with traffic and be safe in a logistical environment of combined 40-45 mph arteries and 70mph expressways and carry 1-4 people and their stuff; one needs at minimum something like a Chevy Malibu- sized vehicle. For singles or younger people, something like a Saturn Astra hatchback might suffice. For a weekend visit to the symphony or art museum for two professional couples in their fifties, a Cadillac CTS or a Buick Lucerne might be the size of car needed. And for a contractor or tradesman, the GMC Sierra pickup or Yukon/Tahoe suv is about perfect. Apparently many negative folk have never truly comparison-shopped for vehicles meeting these needs; because all these GM vehicles meet or exceed the efficiency and quality standards in their class and price range. Prius is a technically too-busy answer with a relatively long payback period. GM will soon be properly getting praise for their mainstream committment to the electic Volt (and future Caddy model shown recently), which will REALLY make an environmental/foreign oil difference if the american consumer approves.
