Chevrolet Volt’s 230 MPG Is Not EPA Approved
General Motors’ method of determining that the Chevrolet Volt is expected to get 230 miles per gallon in the city was not mentioned during GM’s press release yesterday. And even though GM CEO Fritz Henderson never said that these figures are official, the automotive world was given the impression that they are.
The guys at Green Car Advisor did a little digging and contacted EPA who replied saying that, “EPA has not tested a Chevy Volt and therefore cannot confirm the fuel economy values claimed by GM.” EPA went on to applaud GM’s dedication to building a car of the future and said, “We're proud to see American companies and American workers leading the world in the clean energy innovations that will shape the 21st century economy.”

You don't mean this might have just been some publicity stunt? You know, for a bankrupt company trying to make some positive press - so why not just make things up? I'm shocked.....

From what I've heard they used formulas that the EPA has said it will use, but hasn't finalized. Anyway, I still find it funny that GM's initial claims are getting beat up but no one is pointing the finger at Nissan for stating that the Leaf all electric will get 300mpg. While I'm not happy about some of GM's choices (killing the G8 comes to mind) I still think they are doing a lot of good things, the Volt being one. The CTS sport wagon and coupe are another.

Yah, I was ready to call BS on the 230 mpg story - but then I got to thinking: 30-40 miles on batteries, then that little engine kicks in - it must have two of those fabled 100 mpg carburetors fitted . . .
