Chevy Volt Revealed, Just A Little

General Motors has released a new set of Chevrolet Volt images today, showing engineers and artisans hard at work crafting the production version of the hybrid. These pictures don’t exactly tell the whole story of what the car will look like, but they do give us more of an insight into the car’s front grille treatment and, hold your breath, rear badging.

The best shot depicts the Volt’s high-tech front lighting, which seems to incorporate some kind of blue LED fog lamps at the extreme corners of the car. Most of the photos though, depict the building of a full size clay model of the car, as well as safety glass-bedecked workers making thoughtful faces and important gestures over the Volt’s all-important powertrain. Strong stuff.

Take a peek at Volt’s production form in the gallery above.

Anyone buying one of these when they're available?

Not a chance. $40K for a GM experiment? If the price goes up as much in the next two years (when dealers might expect to see one) as it did the last two, it will be at least $50K.

GM has been very vocal about this thing going 40 miles on electric, but no one is saying how fast you can drive on electric alone. I need to do highway speeds.

I do plan on buying an total electric vehicle in less than two years. I just keep hoping something will actually materialize. I do know this is not even close.

I do have to hand it to GM. They manage to play the media over and over, getting distant future products in the headlines on a regular basis.

Er. This will be available for the 2010 model year. And full electrics won't be affordable or have decent range for a LONG time. The Tesla roadster demonstrates that even with a big budget, the tech is just not there yet to go full electric. About experiments, all of these cars are experiments, LOL! You keep hoping, I doubt the $110k tech in the Tesla will get down in the less than $30k range in two years.

It's projected to be available for 2010.  Let's see if that actually happens.

True, but series hybrids with small gas engines, and more capable batteries and motors for acceleration, should become reasonable within three to five years. I'd love to have something with maybe a 30hp gas motor for recharging and 200 peak hp electric power.

I would be first in line for this car if I could, but I don't think my finances will allow it by the time it arrives.  I'll probably settle for a year-old used one.

I like the new headlamp design better than the concept.  The wheels look smaller, but that was expected.
