Bob Lutz: New Volt-Based Concept Will Debut in Frankfurt
Bob Lutz let slip in a recent interview at the New York Auto Show that GM will debut a new vehicle based on the electric hybrid Volt platform (called "E Flex") at the Frankfurt auto show this fall. Lutz explains in this video that the vehicle will have a different body and use a biodiesel engine as its range extender. Expect the concept to debut as an Opel, GM's volume brand in mainland Europe.
In this video, we also get a few insights into the recent talk about the Volt's viability. Lutz gets his knives out and manages to get a few quick stabs in on the Detroit News reporter, Sharon Terlep, who was the first to report that GM was attempting to slowly diffuse the Volt PR balloon in case the program hits the skids. True or false? Lutz says that the program is still a go for 2010 and that the company has "firm intent" to build it. The design will change, however. Lutz states that the Volt's beautiful proportions will have to evolve, with the packaging forcing the front wheels to move back closer to the cabin, creating a larger front overhang. As much as we're disappointed by this, it's not too much of a surprise.

[...] I’ve been stewing about Bob Lutz all morning. I’m really pissed off about this guy. In addition to delaying the new RWD V8 cars and ruling out selling GM’s upcoming new small car in the U.S., he’s also decided that the Volt, the wonderful hybrid concept GM made last year, will be redesigned and introduced at the Frankfurt auto show wearing Opel badges.
