Honda Civic Type R Coming to States in 2010?

ctr-sedan-proto002-sm.jpg

During a recent press drive for the Euro-market Civic Type R (which resulted in this month's WR cover story), our European Editor, Matt Davis, caught some heavy hints that a variant of the hot hatch is indeed headed Stateside in 2010.

Though the assistant chief engineer from Tochigi was loath to talk specifics, the plan is to offer a package in keeping with the Japanese-market Type R (read: four-door sedan), and include a horsepower boost and a limited-slip differential.

The prototype car shown above, modeled on Honda’s JDM/ASEAN market Civic sedan, incorporates a 2.0-liter iVTEC engine giving nearly 220 horsepower, along with the usual suspension and appearance modifications. Given the close proximity of the standard Japanese Civic sedan to its North American counterpart, it would likely be easier to federalize such a model than attempt to import the Euro-market Type R’s angular hatchback, whose bodystyle wasn’t developed with either the U.S. or Canada in mind.

This strikes us as a wise move, because as wonderful as the current Civic Si is here in the States, it's outgunned by high-horsepower entries like the Mazdaspeed3 and Subaru WRX, both of which will be likely targets for this more expensive CTR.

I'm surprised Honda has taken so long to bring its razor-sharp hardware from the rest of the world here, when you consider Subaru and Mitsubishi have been selling WRXs and Evos here for a few years now, not to mention the fact that the Mazdaspeed 3 and 6 came here immediately.

if they slapped a turbo on it, it would be more of a contender, give it some real torque to go along with those horsepower

Mena

I'd buy it for the suspension and brake upgrades.

The Stig

It's about time Honda wised up and brought their Type R line over here. Goodness knows there are enough cars with fake R badges running around that the enthusiasm is here. As another post said, Subaru and even troubled Mitsu have no trouble selling their performance variants over here, so why shouldn't one of the top auto companies in the world cash in one this too?

There's no R over here because Honda doesn't want to eat Acura's lunch.

eternalforce

This was true - but Acura isn't making the Integra, RSX, or anything sporty anymore at the moment(unless you count the TSX... which I don't). The next great thing will be their NSX. Honda can take the spot with the Type R - at least for a little while.

Don

How about just bringing over that space-age cool hatchback? Type-R or not.

rc

He cares about a 4 door type-r. If it were 2 door than yeah it'd be cool. But quit makin a big stupid deal about a 4 door grocery gettin piece of crap

Steve

Hrm. Glad to see that we might be getting a CTR, finally... But, I have no interest in this one, while the hatch really gets my pulse up. Give us the hatch!

wasn't the EP3 euro only? didn't we get that? who wants the same thing over again

mbkulov

i mean who wants another FA5... ill take that crazy ass euro R anyday

Robert

Woo Hoo a CTR!!.....What?.....It's a four door?......You're kidding me right?

Okay, really, who wants a four door Type R? Doesn't the "R" stand for race? I can't believe Honda is doing this to us again. C'mon Honda!! Can we please get the coupe or hatch Type R? Less weight + more power = more better = what we want. We appreciate the "R" but, not in four door fashion.

Charles

o_O

The current civic si sedan is only 60 lbs heavier than the coupe!

Bring it over here

I hope they really bring this fine automobile over here in 2010, I will have my deposit ready. In fact I would rather spend money on the Type R instead of the Mugen Si. We all know that there are faster vehicles in the same price range, but what makes loyal to Honda is first; the reliability, the performance, the good looks, and the vast network of Honda enthusiasts and businesses that cater to these automobiles. I really badly want to build a EK9 R but I might have to use that money for this vehicle if/when it comes out.

i dont know why your moaning about four doors, i thik it looks really good, reminds me of the integra type r which they never bought to us here in the UK. I will hopefully import one of these.

Get huge savings on a Riverside Honda

Four doors does not always mean heavier. I do not know the facts about this particular car, however if you guys remember the G35's and do a little research you will find that in that model the sedans were lighter than the coupes. Food for thought!

ronnie

I hope we get this type r sedan its cool I think it looks better then the coupe. Japan doesn't have the coupe version the sedan is the way to go.

liushen67

TO HONDA OF NORTH AMERICA

Please give us the civic type r in a coupe form instead of the sedan. The sedan is quite nice, but not as racey looking as the coupe. You will without a doubt get more buyers if the type r is a coupe instead of a sedan. If you make one, I would buy this over any other sports car out there. I love 4 cylinder pocket rockets. And I will be the first in Jax Fl to trade in my lovely 06 civic si coupe in 2010 for a type r coupe. I hope this is read by someone within honda corp who could make this happen. Give us the greatest sports compact car in history. Make the civic type r coupe and you will see just that!

mark

i have a (USA) 98 cx hatch (EK9 wanna be)

i love it despite the little d16y7. i dream of importing an EK9. i love hatches. but i really don't mind a four door. it probably is not much heavier. if this car is for sale in wisconsin in 2010, HONDA YOU HAVE MY GUARENTEE THAT I WILL TRADE MY 98 HATCHY AND BUY THIS! please give us a roaring type-r that we americans could only dream about before. (and please leave the stick shift on the floor, not on the dash, thank you)

Tony

Are you guys really complaining about a 4 door type r? You make it sound like a 4 door can't compete with a 2 door. Wrx Sti? Lancer Evo? Granted, the type r isn't at "that" level but the same concept can be grasped.

Personally, i like both versions of the type r. And i actually like the Si sedan better than the coupe. Although thats in part because it suites my needs better, but regardless.

One thing i don't like is the fact it shares the same engine as the current Si. Common, its a fairly respectable platform but at very least up the redline, and push 230-240hp at least. This will cost a fortune, i mean when we had the integra type r msrp was around $25k, that was several years ago. I'd imagine the ctr if brought to the states will go for atleast $30k, for that price, 240hp+ shouldn't be out of the question.

omar

Personally, I cant wait for the type-r sedan to come to the states... I currently have a civic coupe and cant wait to get a sedan. i will be one of the first people buying this car... I think this model has a sporty yet luxury look. PLEASE HONDA CORP, BRING THIS CAR IN SOONER... dont wait till 2010 bring it in this year or early next year latest...

omar

who has any idea of price range of this car. will it be as high as the mugen? hopefully not...does anyone know???????

David L

To all you Sedan haters,

I currently drive an EP3 Si Hatch which is stellar, but when it comes to looks and practicality, it's too small and it looks like an alien door wedge type thing, much like the new euro CTR hatch. I'd love to see a practical, clean looking sports sedan come state-side. Especially if it is anything like the JDM CTR. You can't beat 230 all-motor whp out of a 4 cyl, Subaru and Mitsubishi wish they could design an engine that didn't need power-adders...............But they can't.

If i could pre-order one, it would be done, but i can't so i have to be patient and just count the days.

Dude in a Mitsu

Dude, mitsu went turbo instead of their Mivec (1.6L with 175HP AVAILABLE BACK IN 1991 BTW) because of the lack of torque. Please learn your facts before you start your typical Honda fanboi ranting aka "hating".

Anyways, I'm a huge evo fan but I think I definitely will buy this car if it comes stateside. I hate the two tiered dash but I can live with it. 220 HP plus mpg in the 20 - 29 range is a real winner to me. Bring it Honda!!!

ron blanco

The europe type r hatchback is so nice why not sell it
in us and canada it will be very very good..i myself wants a honda type r in canada...please sell it there...
lot of customers will be glad...

Anonymous

this honda civic type r looks way better then the ms3, wrx, and evos why not turbocharge it?
when the mugen civic si sedan was released i certainly thought that it would have turbo, but the only thing that was different was just the exterior parts what the hell is that most people want performance not just the name.

Honda-worker

In reguards to everyone's comment on the Civic Type R. I work for Honda of America. I'm REALLY excited about this car next model year. I'm 90% sure this is what i'll be replacing my 94 Accord with a H22 swap in it. now about the Mugen deal. yes i was let down. HOWEVER I talked with the design team who was responible for the Mugen Si they stated the Mugen is more or less a "window dressed" Si. yes it has Mugen wheels, Mugen exhaust and a few "look pretty things" but nothing major.
now as far as "forced induction" going. I don't see that happening due to 2 reasons. #1. once this series of RDX ends with the Turbo 2.4 K series motor they are killing the turbo motor in it and putting in a V-6.(probably the same as in the Accord)#2. Honda other than the Integra GS-R and RDX have been known for Naturally aspired motors. plus keep in mind that little K motor if at 220-250 hp it's pretty maxed out . concidering when i started there a TL and CLs were making that with 2 more cylinders.
#3. reason why Honda won't do a turbo on this: just our plant layout. the line i'm on makes the RDX motors. it's a pain in the ass for the RDXs cause
2nd shift the night before actually makes the motor all except the turbo and it's stuff.
1st shift hangs the turbos and all the plumbing(oil lines, air lines, etc. ) final assembly. then it gets sent to body plant and put in a car.
but i've talked to AE managers and they haven't been too hip on that little turbo line.

I like this more than the euro type r ...by 2010 im gonna have the cash ready out the door

honda fan

if you look up the news on this type r coming here to the states, they said the estimated price tag for it would be around 25k. Which is not bad for me personally since i do have a baby on the way and like the reliability of a honda. i also like that fact that it looks F-ing awesome. Search around on other websiets and you'll see the price tag for it, but it is also an estimate.

bassment03

nice just want the engine won't have to import

Steve Williams

I totally disagree with the author's comments. In my opinion, the European TYPE R definitely fits the North American market. His comment is purely subjective.
I personally find the TYPE R, manufactured in the UK, and exported to Australia, several times more attractive than the proposed white SI ‘look alike’. Few autos can inspire me to consider purchasing a new ride, but the European iteration could do just that. Based on design alone, this car should be offered as an adjunct to Honda’s current offerings in the United States.
