Shanghai Auto Show: Volkswagen Santana Ubiquity

Among our many observations of the Chinese mainland this week...

With an average of 142 units per 100 households, the bicycle is still the preferred method of transportation in China. But glance down any given street in any given city, on any given day, and you may think that Volkswagen's Santana is a not-too-distant second.

Throw a stone down a street in China, and seven times out of ten, you'll hit one. They're everywhere, around every corner, in every nook and cranny. Old ones, new ones, taxicabs, police cars, personal cars and beyond. And they come in a veritable rainbow of colors; from minty greens to cobalt teals, taxicab yellows to fire engine reds, Volkswagen has you covered.

While we're all for supporting the home team (the Santana being a product of the Shanghai-Volkswagen joint venture since 1986), the car's pervasiveness seems almost over the top. Picture New York City with its sprawling streets of Ford Crown Victoria Yellow Cabs, then imagine that half the other cars are also Crown Vics. The situation in China, or at least Shanghai, is along these lines.

But why not? With a sticker price of around $12,500 U.S. and proven reliability, who can argue?

The modern-day Santana, you may recall, was last sold in the States as the Volkswagen Quantum, essentially VW's large(r) sedan forerunner to the Passat. Since its Chinese indoctrination, the car has had few notable design upgrades, enjoying only minor updates (such as improved back seats and a hydraulic clutch) from its original version up through the Santana 2000 and on to the present-day '3000.' Essentially, little has been done to change its evil ways (Yeah, yeah, yeah!-Ed).

Since arriving here, we've sampled more than a dozen of these Santana cabs (other makes of taxis are extremely rare), and have always found them to be clean and well-maintained inside. Better still, they're an unquestioned bargain for most foreign travelers. We've been all over Shanghai now, and most trips have cost the equivalent of around three or four bucks.

That's genuine value for the money, no matter what currency it's in.

This is not true for ANY CITY in China. Only in Shanghai you'll find these VW taxi's. In other cities, such as Beijing and Shenzhen, VW taxi's are relatively rare. You guys at WindingRoad should get out of Shanghai while you were there. :)

I lived in Beijing back in '99 and remember there being quite a few Santanas there back then - though certainly not to the extent we saw in Shanghai recently. That said, there were a lot more Xiali's up north, which I saw none of in Shanghai.

We would have loved to explore more cities. Hopefully next time.

The Shanghai Auto Show looks real fun, wish I could be there.

Not sure why these VW taxis are so popular in Shanghai. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that they are made by "Shanghai VW"?

I have family that recently moved to Shanghai for work, and I have to admit to the ubquity of the Santanas. They might be old in design, and most taxis well used, but they generally are well maintained.

But, as other readers have mentioned, it varies from city to city.

Huangzhou mostly uses Passats (last gen) and Hyundai Sonatas (current and last gen). It just depends on who's there locally.

I just got back from 12 yeras in China and SE Asia, tracking the auto industries there.

The Santanas are pervasive in Shangahi because Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive, the manufacturer that builds the vehicle, is 50 percent owned by the Shanghai Municipal Government.

The Municipal government wrote local specifications for taxis to match those of the Santana because the more Santanas sold, the more employment at the factory and its suppliers, and the more corporate and income taxes they can collect. That is why police and other government entities also use the vehicles.

Other municipal governments which have joint ventures do exactly the same. In different cities you will find different taxis. Examples:

Beijing: Hyundai Elantra
Wuhan: Citroen ZX
Changchun: VW Jetta
Chongqing: Suzuki Alto
Tianjin: Xiali (Daihatsu Charade)
Guangzhou: Hondas or Toyotas
Hainan: Mazda Premacy or 323
Etc.

A Volkswagen Santana as a taxi it could be in Shanghai but people should not be surprised by it because I live in Sharajah in UAE and there we have Toyota Corolla as the most common taxis and even Nissan cars are common taxi vehicles but yes those models are some ten year old models of course not a brand new Toyota Corolla as a taxi.
