Dodge Challenger vs. Ford Mustang by the (Sales) Numbers

Mustang Bullitt vs Dodge Challenger smokey burnouts

Although Dodge’s new Challenger hasn’t been on sale for very long, that hasn’t stopped J.D. Power’s PIN Network from chronicling some interesting emerging purchasing trends. In fact, the firm has even gone a step further by comparing some early statistics with buyers of the Ford Mustang, the Challenger’s main rival.

According to their findings, in June and August, the Challenger’s two powertrain iterations attracted two very different customers, and unsurprisingly, transaction prices between V-6 and V-8 models differed hugely—by an average of $20,000. That gap stands in marked contrast to the Mustang, where the average transaction price disparity between V-6 and V-8 models was only about $10,500 over the same period. Back-of-the-napkin analysis says that this has as much to do with the fact that the Mustang is available in more models and trims than anything else.

Perhaps most interestingly is that Challenger buyers were almost twice as likely to pay for their cars in cash versus their Mustang counterparts. This could also be due in part to the fact that those who have been reserve-listed months were saving up while they waited for the car to go on sale, or it could simply mean that more early adopters were of the well-heeled variety. Almost 50 percent of V-8 Challengers were paid for without financing, while the V-6’s percentage was less than half that figure. Further, more than four-out-of-five V-8 Challenger transactions did not include a trade-in, leading one to surmise that they were purchasing secondary transportation—a “fun” car.

Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the Challenger is also getting alot of conquest sales. Just over 22 percent of V-6 buyers traded in a Chrysler product, while fewer than 34 percent of Hemi buyers turned in a Mopar. Comparable Mustang customers? Just over 51 and 60 percent, respectively.

Interestingly, Power says that buyers of the V-8 Challenger were 85 percent male, compared to Mustang’s 78 percent male demographic. Call us sexist, but if anything, we would have guessed that the percentage would have skewed even more.

I think this is nitpicking on factors most of us don't care about.  Consumers buy what they want to.  Users like what they like.  The vehicle sales price is interesting.  $31,600 for a V-8 Mustang?  What are the production numbers?

The V-8 Challenger is a shock.  $47,400 for V-8 models across the board is even harder to swallow.  Comparatively, the V-6 price doesn't seem bad for a new car.  For the money, I'd take something smaller and more mechanically sophisticated.  (Mini Cooper S.)

I think the funny part is the buyer's average age since most of the blokes buy those wheels for their kids or something. Otherwise it just smells like midlife crisis.

Probably midlife crisis. The styling of both cars is totally retro. Looking at either car makes you suddenly feel like it is 1969 once more. In the case of the Dodge, it is the same size even and you probably need to put an original 1970 Challenger next to the new one to tell the difference.

you cant beat a mustang!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

hey sorry to burst your bubble if this website is a fan of the mustang but your numbers are off. The difference between a challenger v-6 and v-8 is nowhere near 20,000. The challenger goes from a 20-25 thousand dollar v-6 to a 25-35 thousand dollar 350 hp v-8 and then finally the 45,00 dollar srt. The pony base is the same 20-25 then the gt which has around 300 horse is 25 grand and up so really the better value is the challenger when it comes to that.
