Dodge Offering Up to 40% Savings on Ram, 28% on Durango

Dodge Ram

We’ve heard of manufacturers offering some pretty hefty discounts during the end of a vehicle’s model year, but this just seems ridiculous. Dodge is offering some pretty serious savings for the 2008 Ram and Durango in hopes that this will move some extra vehicles off of dealer lots, but in a market where $4.00 gasoline is the deciding factor for a lot of consumer’s choices, pickups and SUVs are no longer of highest priority.

Dodge is advertising savings of up to 40 percent off the base MSRP of the Ram 1500 pickup, which translates to just over $9000 from the base Ram’s sticker price. Additionally, the Durango can be had with a 28 percent discount, or almost $7900 in savings. Combined with other, lesser discounts on other Dodge vehicles, we’re wondering how long it will take before we start seeing advertisements that read, “Buy a Ram, Get a Free Caliber!”

What do you think? Is a 40 or 28 percent discount enough incentive to head to your local Dodge dealership and pick up one of these vehicles? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

This is like 5 or so years ago when you could get a truck or SUV for $10k off sticker!! I need to get out and look around.

JohnD

If they can afford to give that much of a discount, can you imagine the profit markup that they have on them?

Russ Bellinis

That is probably all of the profit margin in the truck. If they can't sell them at cost, their next option is to sell them at a loss or just keep the things which guarantees a 100% loss, plus storage costs.

A vehicle that is driven 10,000 miles per year getting 10 mpg will use 1000 gallons of gas per year. At $4.00 per gallon, that $9,000.00 discount will pay for 2.25 years of gas. If it gets 15 mpg, the numbers are better. If the choice is between an econobox or a gas guzzler, it is probably preferable to go with the econobox unless it is over priced with crazy dealer surcharges. On the other hand, a business owner needing a new pick up or fleet of pick ups is probably in the "cat bird's" seat right now.

the durango is not a surprise, it is ugly, and has a tough competetion. however, having the huge discount on the recently updated Ram is a shock, kinda.

Mena

Not to mention the Durango gets horrid gas mileage even for a SUV and the ride is terrible. We got a rental one with the Hemi when the wife backed the truck into a pole. Great brakes and the interior was ok but everything else was crap.

Just to be clear... Dodge is offering up to 40% off MSRP of certain models of the 2008 Ram, not the new 2009 model.

mo

are the 2009 models out already?? We all know that it is for 2008 models, still we have a couple of months till we get the really blazing deals, that is when 2009 models are in the showrooms.

anyways, who assigned you to defend chrysler. The company seems to be stuck in the year 2000.

My granpa wanted a 300 V6 this year, and I advised him not to get near any chrysler product. Everything mechanical from chrysler is becoming pre-historic. most companies are successfully making new technology in engines, suspensions and the like, but chrysler inc. is still using the same old technology.

If I were in the market for a pickup, it would probably get me in the dealer's door. That doesn't mean I'd buy one. It's been my experience that Rams tend to burn up their transmissions. Given that Chrysler is offering a lifetime powertrain warranty, I'd think pretty hard about it. At that point, it becomes a bet on Chrysler's future.

When I buy trucks, I typically buy 3/4-ton trucks. I just checked the Dodge website, and there are NO incentives on 3/4-ton trucks. What this says to me is that the people who bought PU trucks for image, stopped buying them. The people who work their trucks are still buying, apparently.

Mena

"The people who work their trucks are still buying, apparently."

If you go to carsdirect.com, you'll see a $6500 rebate on the Dodge 3/4 tons. Chevy's is around $3500 (I think). They have them, it's just not as high. I'm waiting on the big rebates on the 3/4 tons (if that happens).

Lee

Well that'll soften the depreciation blow at least.

Buy a Toyota Tundra Best Truck out there HANDS DOWN. Oh and it holds its resale value

Anonymous

Want to bet on holding resale valve on any truck? At auction you can get any 2007,2008 for less than 30% of sticker!!!! Including TUNDRA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Russ Bellinis

The last I heard, the Toyota Tundra is not available bigger than a 1/2 ton model. My observations of previous Japanese trucks is that even when they are rated as 1/2 ton models they are always built and powered to the light side of the rating. Of course, the tundra is now available with a Chevy engine, so some things may have changed.

Mena

Um. The Tundra is NOT using a Chevy engine. LOL! That's all Toyota. About your 1/2 question, none of the Japanese have larger than 1/2 tons unless you want a commerical truck.

Russ Bellinis

Um, correction, the entire marketing program touting Toyota's supposedly beefier Trucks is based on a Tundra that outsourced at least the engine and perhaps the entire drive train from GM. Toyota does not make an engine as big as they are offering in the Tundra. Your point about the Japanese trucks not being offered in a size larger than 1/2 ton is my point exactly. If a person is looking for a car to do occasional hauling, the Japanese make decent 1/2 tons. If you want to tow a boat, or large trailer, or haul serious weight, none of the Japanese companies make anything between the 1/2 ton and 1 1/2 ton class.
