Keep Your Chin Up: Spyker Reports 72 Million Euro Loss for 2007

In 2006 Dutch exotic car builder Spyker didn’t do very well financially, the company reported losses of 1.3 million euros for that year. But that amount seems positively cheery when compared against news coming out of the company today, which had Spyker reporting a loss of over 72 million euros in 2007.

The automaker fully admits that it made mistakes last year; the biggest and most costly of which had to have been its involvement in Formula One racing. CEO Victor Muller called 2007, “A dramatic year, the likes of which the company had never seen before and which we would like to leave behind us as soon as possible."

2008 seems to have a much better outlook for Spyker (it could hardly be worse), the company has been infused with capital from Snoras Bank in Lithuania, and is ready to start producing its C8 Aileron model in Q3. The company produced 18 cars in the first quarter of 2008, selling 12 of them. Spyker is also seeking an “aggressive expansion

Isn't this the same company that was going to make an electric sedan? Who's butt were they going to pull out the money for that project?

God- I hope they don't go bankrupt- It sounds like they won't. These are the only AWESOME AND RIDICULOUS cars being sold right now. Way more than ferraris, or dare i say it, paganis. Spyker's will be so insanely collectible 20 years from now. a rare gem in a sea of plastic.

but--if they go bankrupt i'll never be able to afford one!

And oh by the way--blunder on the F1 team idea.

I guess this is what happens when you manufacture the ugliest cars on earth. Can't say I'm sad about this one, their cars are so ridiculous looking, it's downright laughable.

I love these guys as well so I hope they pull through. I don't know what they were thinking with going into F1. They should have stayed in the GT2 class in Le Mans series racing. That would be a heck of a lot cheaper and they would get a good amount of marketing/product improvement value from it. I'm a huge Porsche fan as a daily/track toy but out of all the high end exotic cars available that are basically garage queens, (not saying they can't be driven hard but I'll be damned if I would take one to the local market or track day) Spykers are my fav. I hope they find a way to get back into racing albeit at a more reasonable level.

Not my thing, but I agree they're the only company out there building comic book cars now that TVR is gone. Even Lamborghini's gone soft and that's a shame. There should always be a ridiculous choice available to break up the monotony.

unfortunate for all of us. some ppl are so stereotyped that they hate anything creative or unusual. the design of spyker is good although it looks a bit weird.

The cars are creative gems. I'm sorry to see the firm in this dilemma. To me, Spykers look like edgier Astons.

hwyhobo

They may be great cars, but making them cartoonishly fugly probably does not help sales.

chartguy

I love the fact that they're optimistic, given that they've only sold twelve of the eighteen cars that they produced in the first quarter (67%). The response to more cars than customers, make more cars! Introducing a new model takes chutzpah, almost as much as trying F1.

Spyker's business plan is as strange as their cars, and that is what makes them special. F1 was not a good idea, but a ballsy one, they should scale back but not leave racing. The SUV is a good thing to do, it certainly didn't hurt Porsche. I hope they survive, variety is the spice.
