Pure love of motoring isn't enough to suffer the humiliation of being seen in this or any recent MB offering. How is it that a Pontiac design ethos has taken over at MB, the regreatable exteriors reek of loathsome cladding and bling while if one were forced inside the cabin you would believe yourself trapped at the Macy's cosmetics counter suffering a vulgar nightmare.
"the S63 AMG costs nearly $70,000 less but delivers similar performance from its V-8 engine."
This reads like an example of the law of diminishing returns. Someone, somewhere, with an annual car budget well into the millions may need this, but it's hard to imagine many buyers.
Usually other exotica. Maybe one pedestrian car (like a 535i "beater" or something). If they're cars guys, then one of the cars is usually modified. This, of course, is just ancedotal. I'd like some statistical data onthis myself.
so you're catching up with this gleaming monster on the always free freeway 405. From behind it immediately tells you're in the company of greatness, you're stuck behind a "S65" (on the left side) "AMG" (on the right side). traffic moves up on the parallel lane and you inch into that open space only to find out even more of the great strangers identity, it is a "V12 biturbo". I'm already impressed, but think of the driver, just in case he forgot what he spent over $200K for, there's an equally shiny decal on the dashboard, it says "V12". So 5 (five !!!) shiny decals raise the asking price from $90K to over $200K, now that's some expensive chrome plated plastic.
Just a thought about the 2008 Mercedes Benz S65AMG. These are vehicles that you "want" not "need". Nobody needs to spend $200K for transportation. That’s the point. This is not just transportation. Luxury-High Performance-Market Leading Safety all in one box. Drive fast and hard and be in control or lay back in pure luxury. Sounds like a vehicle with two great personalities.

It still has the 5 speed auto. Yuck! I have to admit, I like AMG's. But, for $200k, I'd rather have the Lambo LP560-4.

Agreed. Would be interesting to find out exactly how many sell this year. Might be even more interesting to know what else is in the buyers' garages.
