Carroll Shelby Sues Fan Club
The venerable Carroll Shelby has filed a lawsuit against the Shelby American Automobile Club – fan club dedicated to the man’s creations.
The lawsuit is the newest step in an ongoing battle between the two. Shelby’s lawsuit claims the 5,000-member club has not been involving him in its marketing strategies and providing him with the proper financial documents that were required in their contract.
Shelby claims the club and its owner – Rick Kopec and Ken Eber – have been capitalizing on his name, but have yet to include him in on the payload. The owners, of course, deny Shelby’s claim.
In a previous interview with Automotive News, Shelby said, “I don’t want my legacy to go down under their thumbprints.

He seems to be having problems with everybody. Old and senile? Difficult to work with? Maybe he finally realizes his name means very little anymore since he's sold out so often and he wants to get it back so that it will carry more weight with over-rich Boomers at Barrett Jackson auctions? He's the modern day Ghia - a once proud coachbuilder that became nothing but a trim level for cheesy tarted-up Fords.

Carroll is an icon, unfortunately he is also a greedy old man looking to make a buck any way he can. If he is so worried about his legacy, don't sue a nonprofit club that is just trying insure that the cars are preserved. He can spin it, throw up smoke and mirrors all he wants, but the bottom line is "...the club is not involving him in its marketing strategies and providing him with the proper financial documents that were requir3ed in the contract."

Eating your young is never a great long-term strategy.
There would be no "legacy" without supporters. Dragging what are essentially your own most loyal customers into court is ludicrous and bizarre.

Shelby's all about the money, and I've long wondered why he's been so successful in lending his name to products.

Think of it this way: Carroll Shelby is the Al Davis of the auto world. He's a sell-out living on past glory.

Did he never learn not to crap where you eat?
