The Amazing Alex Zanardi: Driver Competes in NYC Marathon
After the 2001 CART crash that took both of Zanardi’s legs and nearly ended his life, the race driver fought extreme odds, making it all the way back into the drivers seat; he now races in the World Touring Car Championship.
Not sated by the thrill of sports cars, Zanardi competed in yesterday’s handcycle division of the New York City Marathon. The 40-year-old racer was more than competitive, finishing in fourth place overall with a total time of 1 hour 33 minutes 17 seconds.
After not sleeping well before the marathon, the upbeat Zanardi wasn’t even completely exhausted after wheeling his way 26.2 miles, saying “Nothing hurts. I’ve been in better shape, but I’m not demolished.

Man, this guy is an inspiration. Too bad he's not a natural born citizen, otherwise I'd write him in for 2008 election.

Zanardi is and always will be the man. If Champ Car could modify a DP01 for him to take a couple exhibition laps for each race this year, it'll be HUGE! They modified a reynard for him a few years back so he could finish those final 13 laps in Germany.
There wasn't a dry eye in the house!
Bonus: Let him and Jimmy Vasser take a few laps together. That'll really remind people why they used to love CART so much!
