Even Amish Feeling Gas Pinch
It’s probably the last segment of the population you would expect to feel the pain at the pump, but apparently high gas prices are even taking their toll on the Amish.
While their beliefs prohibit them from using gasoline-powered vehicles, certain orders of the Amish are apparently perfectly within their faith to operate internal-combustion engines, and many do so regularly. According to Pennsylvania paper The Evening Sun, these Amish use such powerplants to help them in agricultural work, including a horse-drawn drag-behind mower.

My parent lived in Lancaster before I was born. They always spoke about the apparent inconsistencies in the Amish sects. No phone in the house, phone in the barn. No electricity in the house, electricity in the barn, etc...

Having Driven Amish here in NE Ohio for 6 years, I can tell you a little about their reasoning related to electricity/phones and other modern conveniences.
First, it is the local bishop who decides what will or will not be acceptable and change may take about one hundred years. Second, the husband rules/handles the money/decides what is necessary as the wife almost never works outside the home and they usually has at least 8 children. Third, and most importantly, everything is based on how the family is effected.
So, though there is no electricity, the phone is no where near the house (although there is a loud ringer attached)and the flush toilet is run with an air compressor, there will be a solar panel connected to provide power to the fence wire to so the horse does not get out!!!!! This has no effect on the family, just on the horse!!
I have even taken the Amish ladies to shop at Victoria's Secret!! Apparently the bishop doesn"t know!

Sandra is correct on most counts. I have lived among the Amish for 8 years, and done considerable amount of research with them while working at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center in Wooster, OH. One clarification is needed: the Amish bishops enforce an interpret rules, but they do not make all the rules. Amish decide as a community what the rules are, and those rules may be debated prior to communion, which happens once per year. Men participate in this, women may have their say through their husbands (depending on the home relationship). If there is a disagreement, there will be no communion until it is resolved. Sometimes this can take years. Sometimes it leads to a split int he congregation. Generally, it is resolved quickly.
There are no "contradictions" in rules for the Amish. They choose to live by rules that they perceive benefiting their families and communities. Non-Amish have just as many, if not more, so-called contradictions: many espouse to be Christian, yet vote against helping the poor. Many espouse such sayings as "G-d helps those who help themselves", yet this is not only absent from the Bible, but is against Christian tradition of helping the helpless, and ministering to the poor.
Otherwise, Sandra's description is very good.
