Fiat 500 Cabrio Spied in the Wild!
Trying to expand on the premise that has made it the small car darling of Europe since its launch – including being named European Car of the Year for 2008 — Fiat is working on two separate convertible themes for its 500 city car.
The Italian company will likely offer both a full convertible and a cabrio “coach” version that would likely employ the same sort of large removable roof panel that made the original Cinquecento so lovable. The 500 in these new spy images would seem to have the full cabrio top fitted, though our spy shooter in the field describes the mule as being the coach version – we’ve got a call in to get the full story.
Update – Trust your spies. We received clarification that the windows and pillars on the spied car are fixed, indicating a folding top but not a full-fat convertible...just like we were told in the first place. Sorry to doubt you CarPix.
Despite that small hiccup of information, it’s clear that a drop-top of some kind is coming from Fiat. Look for the car to come with the same engine range as its hard top brothers, and cross your fingers that Abarth gets involved as well.

The European Car of the Year 2008, the Fiat 500 is finally coming as a cabrio version now as these fresh spy photos prove. And there will probably be two versions of it as well.
At first there will be a cabrio coach version reminding us of the old 500 cabrio, and that is the one showing in the pictures here, later on there will also be a full convertible to compete against the Mini convertible.
The meaning of having two versions is that Fiat can reach all type of customers. The one that want that classic look of a cabrio coach and the once who want a “real” convertible. Of course there will be some differences in price as well. Engines will be the same as known from the 500 line-up, even if its unsure if there will be an Abarth version.
