First Production Chevy Volt Photos Leak Out

The Car Connection has gotten its hands on some production images of the Chevrolet Volt, and many of those individuals responsible for it, just about a week ahead of the planned General Motors reveal in Detroit.

While all of the photos show the Volt at least a little bit obscured by executives and designers, we can clearly see the final product that has been such a long time in the making. Early impressions are that of a neatly detailed, yet altogether less sexy vehicle than its concept car starting place. The production Volt seems a little too tall, and a little too narrow, with a faux-grille that is entirely too plastic. Still, we’ll reserve our full critique until we get a chance to see the car in person next week, when many more details will no doubt be revealed as well.

Anyone else sick of hearing about this car?

Toyota man

I am a Toyota guy myself (I mean really Toyota), but this new Volt doesn't look bad at all. Must admit though that I have seen better pics than the ones shown here. What gets me though is all the negative comments. What's it with you people ......... you haven't touched, driven or even seen it in the flesh for that matter! When I was in the Army, it were always the guys who didn't get to eat at home, who were bitching about the food in the Army. Please get with it. At least GM is making an efford. We haven't seen anything like it from Ford or Chrysler!

Yep, in standard GM form, we are seeing/hearing all about this before it is on sale. Just like the Camaro, which now looks 'old'.

Given that the production Volt looks little like the concept, I think Chevy needs a new name. And remember this thing will supposedly cost close to $40k - it had better drive a whole lot better than it looks. My prediction is that it will not - there will be many excuses made by Chevy at launch as to why it will only run for 5 miles on battery alone....

GM is getting carried away with the hype, as they are loosing sales and money and need a hit to turn things around. GM is hoping the Volt will be that hit, their equivalent of the Toyota Prius.

It is not unusual to have changes between concept and production, and many models make changes from one year to the next, so why change the name? Besides, all the hype is for the "Volt", if they changed the name now it would confuse people and serve no useful purpose.

GM has already been testing the drivetrain in a Malibu mule, and often got over 50 miles per charge before the "range extender" engine kicks in. The production Volt is likely to be lighter and more aerodynamic, so GM should have no trouble hitting their promised 40 miles per charge EV driving range. Since that easily covers most daily driving, the fuel consumption will be minimal.

With all the total electrics due out before the promise date of this thing, it amazes me how GM can push this in our faces so much.

I am not interested in a $40k Chevy and I am very skeptical of GM's claims. The last Chevy I bought new missed its mileage mark by nearly 20% and was a car I hates so much I was happy when someone hit it. Even though it was not totaled, I took the insurance money and junked the car. Saving me from selling it to someone else. One the other hand, I have owned Mitsubishis, Fords and Hondas that have beat their EPA mileage estimates.

While Chevys have improved, I recently shopped for a new car, and it was clear early on they are still not to my standards. The new Malibu was easily disqualified just from the paper comparison. Very poor value even with the discounts.

What's wrong with the Malibu's interior. I think it looks pretty good. At least on par with the other cars in its class (none of which are spectacular).

GM is pushing for $35k not $40k. $40k is a rumor. The all battery range is supposed to be from 13 to 130 miles depending on driving style and environmental conditions. And the mileage with the gas engine doing it's thing is estimated to be 44 mpg. Someone did some calculations using the total range given and fuel tank size (est. 7.2 gallons). But the official final size of the gas tank has not been determined so mileage with the engine on is unknown. The target total range is 360 miles though.

Since the gas engine is only used to charge the batteries and runs at one rpm, that mpg figure should be the same (or similar) regardless of city or hwy driving.

Ducati Minor

The production model is certainly less radical than the concept.  I don't think it looks too shabby at all.  Still outta my range, though.

Why is Chevy building a Honda? Was Lutz out that day?

Austin_Buddha

All the sex appeal of a K-car, at $40K! And who are all the goobers posing with the car? The execs who are running to Congress asking for handouts because they ran the company into the ground and let the South Koreans build better, cheaper cars?

This "leak" seems to be timed very well for the pitch to Congress for a big fat loan. Maybe if the idiots at the top of the company take a 50% pay cut, we should bail them out and try to keep the American car industry alive.

I still can't understand why year after year after year, the Americans can't build reliable cars? Look at the Consumer Reports ratings and see how Toyota, Honda and Hyundai owners report fewer problems with their cars. Granted, Mercedes isn't at the top of the pack either. Perhaps their brush with Chrysler left some lingering culture of low quality.

Innovation in clean burning engines? Honda.
Innovation in Hybrid technology? Toyota.
Innovation in Hydrogen technology? BMW.
Lazy reliance on patriotism and advertising? Ford, Chrysler and GM.

You could not hit this better in excelllent comment.

I want the other volt. Not this ugly thing!!!! I suppose we should get ready to bail out GM next if they think this thing will save them.

Bandit

This latest creation looks somewhat Toyota-like or is GM turning Japanese? The grill looks like it came from a Ford. I think this thing should be called Shock rather than Volt. I'm simply not 'charged' about the proposed pricepoint or the new styling. Add in dealers with a history of poor customer experiences to the deal and you get a dismal failure sure to ultimately sink this tired cruiseship of a company. Be BOLD.
Gee? no, G emmmmm.

libertasdon

It doesn't look too tall or too narrow to me. What do you want? A wide-track Corvette?

$35,000 instead of $40,000? That is before the 200% mark-up at the dealerships.

The concept looked five times better.

Russ Hostetler

OMG! It looks like an Acura! What happened to the styling at last year's autoshow! This car looks bland and slow -- a car for old folks. I hope someone puts this technology in a body that reflects the innovation.

The rectangle shaped face needs links of londonjewelry that adds width and camouflages the length of the face. A highchoker reduces the length of the face, particularly if the neck is toolong. In addition, a 16¡å or 18¡å necklace that ends in a ¡°U¡±flatters this face. Long hair and narrow links of london is perfect match which can impress others as a fair lady. Fancy clothes coordinating links of london with slight tint could be better.
