Ford Mustang or Corvette?

eylesda

The ususal argument, which is best, Ford Mustang or Corvette? My choice.................Corvette!

But whch one, hard top, convertibel, coupe/tatga (Corvette).

eylesda

Where is the bloody spill cheek???? I meant TARGA not tatga!!!!  convertibel... duh!

BillS

Filet Mignon or Hot Dog?  Realistically, both have their places (I don't want a steak at the ball game).

The Corvette is simply a great car. I think the coupe/vert question hinges on where you live. Personally, I like the coupe styling better (and the hatch).

When the C5 Z06 came out I thought is was weird. Now I think it is classic.

But with the right options, a Mk II C6 is the one to have if you can afford it.

Shouldn't this tagline read "Mustang or Camaro?" I'm used to debating against the Ford guys about which pony car wins the day (err.. back in the day when GM still produced the Camaro that is). But the Corvette is in a totally different class! A Mustang just won't be much competition. Any serious sports car enthusiast would hand-off the Mustang to their kid sister and keep the 'vette.

Rick

You guys are right.Camparing the two is really an apples and oranges discussion. If Ford still produced the GT supercar(why do they label everything GT anyway?)we would have a real debate here at least with the Z06 and the ZR1 versions. When the Camro's return next year the pony car guys can renew their debate however the new chevy will have probably 100 more horsepower than the base 325 horsepower Ford V-8.The 500 horse GT will be the more suitable competitor for the new Camaro.

Corvette. We're talking 55 years of history, most of them as "America's Only True Sportscar." I'll grant that early Blue Flame Six powered models were no great shakes, and solid axles held sway until 1963, but the formula of long hood, short deck, pushrod V8 and rear drive predates Mustang by, oh, 9 years.

Mustang DID bring four seats and a bit more practicality to the table, plus lower insurance and lower powered models. In the final analysis, it has to be the Vette though. Even the standard C6/Z51 has all the bases pretty much covered, especially if they can fix the numb steering and the shifter. Where else are you going to find 430 BHP AND nearly 30 MPG? AND 1.0 on the skidpad? AND 185 MPH?

For less money than most of the boutique Shelby models too.

Besides all that, sports cars have TWO seats.

=)

Gee, let's compare cars in the same price range will ya.
If you make this comparison I can make a couple more ridiculous compares.

High school parking lots are full of Mustangs. Buy one and join the crowd. Sorry, I agree with most of the others. It's not a fair comparison.

Well - as mentioned by others, I think it depends on where you are and where you are in life. At 25, I'm still pretty young. While I am fortunate enough to afford a Z06, I would probably spend the money on the GT500KR, simply because it's rare and it has a bit more of a "coolness" factor. At work, the person closest in age to me is 44 - that's 19 years older, almost double my age. All of the guys talk and talk about their Vette's (or lack of one). I guess I'm stuck with the stereotype that old=vette and young=pony car. However, with all my opinions, if I could afford the ZR1 Vette, I bet I would have a different tone in my posting.

I think Vette, I think old man's car. Sad but true. They hold a car show in my town once a month through the summer. It's all classic cars except for a group of old men that bring their 200X Vettes. They're clueless.

kslotkow

They're two radically different cars.  It's not a fair comparison.

MUSTANG AND CORVETTE ?? SAY WHAT?? NO COMPARISON. PUT MY CAMARO Z-28 CONVERTIBLE AGAINST THE MUSTANG , THEN SURE ;COMPARE EM, BUT WE ALSO OWN OUR CORVETTE TARGA AND A DODGE VIPER HENNESSY 550-COMPARE THEM TOGETHER-BOTH AWESOME CARS(DIFFERENT AS NIGHT AND DAY THEY ARE). WE DO NOT HAVE A MUSTANG-OUR 4TH CAR THAT WE OWN IS A HONDA INSIGHT. WE MAY BE SPORTS CAR CRAZY BUT WE ARE'T STUPID !!

I see that you ARE'T ??? stupid. Did they put brakes on the Viper yet, or do they still take out the straw bales on the turns? Ever hear of the super snake? Where were Dodge and Chevy when the GT was winning at Le Mans?

ZZERO6

Well, I am glad you asked. We drive both; a 2008 GT500 (convertible) and a 2008 ZO6 (LZ3). Both are loaded and driven daily. In addition, I kept my 2001 ZO6 only because the value for sale or trade-in was not worth it, although I will eventually part with it. My wife and I are both in our early 60s and have driven high performance cars all of our adult lives. Her first car was a Mustang and mine was a Corvette; see where we are going here?
Like others have said-'it is an unfair comparison'. You can place two people in the back seat of the Mustang although they may never be able to walk (upright) again. The Mustang wins hands-down for fun (top down) on a Sunday afternoon with the temperature in the mid 70s. Other than that it has nothing to offer except less cost.
Ford has done a great job of continuing the Mustang tradition but face facts - everyone drives a Ford Mustang GT. They have their own sound and people who drive them do so because they are fairly priced (Corvette is not) and think they are fast. My 2001 ZO6 (385 HP) will run circles around the GT500 even with the 500HP rating. It will do EVERYTHING better except carry 2 additional people. We use an SUV for that purpose. Now then; for a family of 2 with one car - MUSTANG. My brother drives a Prius and thinks that everyone should do the same. Great Forum.

Yesterday I drove a 2008 Z06 special edition 427ci super car, AND I WASN'T IMPRESSED! It was not as fast as my current car, was big and boxy, to quiet and I felt it had way to much foo-foo stuff inside,,, push button door latches?
Any how, i'll stick with Ferrari's forever.

ZZERO6

What is a 2008 ZO6 Corvette 427 Supercar? Is it the special edition one that is painted a shade of red?
In many years I have never heard ANYONE refer to a Corvette as 'big and boxy'! A Honda Element is boxy. A Hummer is big. But a Corvette being big and boxy?!
I love Ferrari as well; the Ferrari 599 GTB F1 Fiorano is one of my favorites and is some car. 600+ HP and over $270,000. A friend drives one (daily) and it is the best "put together" car I have ever been in; Italian or German. Nevertheless, the similarity in body design to the Corvette would make it look "big and boxy"!
For that much money I would simply purchase 2 ZR1 Corvettes next year, a new Jeep Grand Cherokee and give the remainder to my contractor to add another garage.

I have a 1999 corvette coupe. Comming back from Austin, Texas, with 17K on the clock I got an average 36.4 MPG. That is with 345 Hp + headers. I would shudder to think what a similar Mustang would do.

What kind of trailer was the corvette on while running from Austin? Are you sure you weren't driving your vintage Austin?

Another point regarding MPG. The whole thing boils down to gross weight plus HP plus aerodynamics. Really!

Wajman

I agree with the crowd that the Mustang and Corvette are very different cars. For the record though, at a car show, my 67 Mustang Fastback and brother in laws 73 Camaro, draw the attention and all the Corvettes are alone and lonely. As far as horsepower and mpg, my GT500 gets 28 on the road and still seats 4 sort of. At least the grandkids don't mimd the back seat with the top down.

Eponymous

This is an outrage! How dare you compare the two! Blah blah blah.

Log-off and drive.

We'll if i was given the choice of one or the other , Corvette Z-06 all the way.
Much sleeker than the boxy looking Mustang , and a lot faster .
Also don't forget the fiberglass body , no rust!!!!!!

Rick

This argument is soooooo rediculous! You may just as well have a forum that compares Hum-Vees against Lear Jets! Either wait until the new Camaro rolls off dealership floors or persuade Ford to bring back a refreshed version of the 1966 SC Cobra and then we can have an appropriate debate.

yaqoub

I have both a corvette C6 Z06 & Mustang GT500, you have to invest $30,000 on the Mustang to compare it to the Corvette Z06 & after you make the investment you will discover that you lost because the corvette is a better car, you can compare the mustang with the new camaro.

Anonymous

If Ford ever did make a car that could compare to a Corvette (they never will) you can rest assure it would not be named Mustang! Jeez Louise,a base model 430 horsepower Corvette will smoke a GT500 in every category let alone what a Z06 or ZR1 would do to it...And as for the wimpy 2008 base model V-8, 315 hp 'Stang' an underpowered 1992 LT1 Corvette would still stomp that pony!!! I may even wager that an '85' L98 Vette (because of the torque) would give the new stang all it could stand though the 1/8th mile.Thats a 23 year old car my friends!!!

avalanchecowpoke

A Corvette of course! I'll take the '08 coupe with all the options... ...the only Mustangs that ever existed are the ones I could slap my old saddle on, put my spurs to and ride through the puckerbrush for days on end---better than an ol' Jeep any time!

How many of the old men who seem to predominate the Corvette field have ever raced a car? All seem to be experts on racing, but they are never seen at the strip with their bow tie delight.

Ducati Minor

The 'Vette has always been true to its role as a sports car for Americans with a standard of grand touring by Europeans.
