Has Japan finally discovered its own design identity?

It's getting harder and harder to ignore Japan's cars with each passing year.  Used to be that the Japanese built cars that resembled popular Western vehicles, or were simply boxes on wheels.  But that appears to be changing as Japanese design studios (sometimes founding outside talent) have been able to carve more and more distinguished shapes.  Could it be that Japan has finally discovered its own design language?

Ducati --let me start with thanks for the nice pix you put in your posts. That said, if Japan has discovered its design language, I hope it isn't represented by that Mazda you chose. But I do think Japan has made real strides: Infiniti, Mazda, and even Lexus make consistently decent-looking cars. Their fit and finish is marginal, especially on the interiors, but another 5-10 years and they'll be pretty good.

I could easily imagine that car with the Double Chevron on its nose instead of lily or lotus blossom or whatever Mazda's logo is supposed to be.

What if the tail wings of the last 10 years are compared to the fins of the late 50s? Does that constitute a design identity?

The drifting styled car can also be compared to the muscle cars of the late 60s and early 70s.
