Ask It: 2009 Audi TTS Roadster
Steven J. Ewing

Our Ann Arbor office may still be in the middle of a cold winter, but that hasn't stopped us from getting some top-down time with Audi's latest drop-top -- the TTS Roadster.
Post your questions about what you'd like to know about Audi's latest sports car and we'll post our responses over the next few days.

I wonder how much this will cost in two years? I'll be looking at these. Did this have AWD available?
Steven J. Ewing
Quattro AWD is standard on both the coupe and roadster.

Did have a chance to push the car a little? I'm wondering if it understeers first.

Does the TTS have magnetic ride control? If so, does it improve the ride on bad pavement?
Steven J. Ewing
The TTS does have magnetic ride control. We've left the suspension in sport mode for the majority of our drive thus far and can't seem to find any complaints. There is a particularly rough section of pavement at the main intersection of the town I live in, and even when left in sport mode, the TTS's suspension did a nice job of smoothing itself out over those pavement irregularities.

How does the exhaust sound? On startup, light acceleration, flooring it?
Could you post some videos of the above scenarios?
[sarcasm] I know that will probably we a very tedious task. :) [/sarcasm]
Also, does the transmission rev-match downshifts?
Steven J. Ewing
The exhaust on the TTS is actually a rather intoxicating sound. There's a loud, low grumble when the car is initially started, and under any type of acceleration (slow or fast), the low, "brappy" sound is always present. When the gears change, there's a slight little burp which almost makes us want to constantly go up and down the gears -- it's a great noise. The quad-pipe exhaust on this car really sets it apart from a standard TT.
As for the transmission, it does rev-match during downshifts. We really like the S-tronic dual-clutch transmission, but would still prefer a straight-up six-speed manual. Unfortunately, a manual trans is not available on the TTS.

Thanks for the reply Steven... I'm always open to adding aftermarket exhausts, but it shows attention to detail if the manufacturer takes the time to tune the stock system well, which should be the case with sport models like the S, RS, AMG, etc. in my opinion.
Steven J. Ewing
I completely agree. AMG always seems to do a good job of making their exhaust a bit more impressive over the standard cars. We had an SLK55 AMG many months ago and it was really nice to hear such a powerful exhaust note coming from such a small car.

The 1.8 liter engine on my 2006 TT Quatro is not rough at all. The 2.0 liter engine in the A4 I have driven seems rough. What does the engine feel like in the new TT?
HJB4971
Why a four-banger? Did it feel like it had enough horsepower? I keep wondering why AUDI can't seem to put a 300-350 HP motor in this car to make it competitive with Nisa Z, Porsche, and Corvette. I'd love to switch to a Quatro-TT that I could drive year round instead of my Corvette and winter truck, if I didn't lose so much performance.

HJB, as someone who has owned both a TT Quattro and a Vette ('06) I would say go drive one. You will be very surprised. The TT may lack the monster torque of the Vette but it still feels very fast and is definately more fun to drive than the Vette. The Vette feels very large and heavy in comparision to the Audi. The interior of the TT is also leaps and bounds more comfortable and better to look at and touch then the Vette's.

Did you find it slow off the line unless you used launch control ?
When I test drove a TT S recently, I initially thought the hand brake was on. From a standstill it just bogged down unless you really hit the "loud pedal"
Once the turbo spooled up the performance was OK. Pity Audi have just announced, they have no plans to bring the TT RS to North America.

Where did they take these pictures - pulled over for a rest stop while driving through Alabama? Couldn't find a more picturesque spot?

Does the TTS have an all new engine or has Audi just turned up the boost on the old 2.0T.
