2008 F1 Season

Tom Martin

Well, it would be hard to say that the F1 finale in Brazil wasn't exciting. Congrats to Lewis Hamilton (Driver's champ) and McLaren; also to Ferrari (Constructors Champ) and Felipe Massa (who lost the title by one point which has to be frustrating).

But how would you rate the season overall? Is F1 getting more or less interesting?

Is it just me, or did Glock pull over and hand Hamilton the championship? The track was dry where he was passed and his last lap was mysteriously 20 seconds slower than before. It doesn't add up...

I have to go back and look at it as I missed the last lap. I saw a video but it wasn't clear at all. Looked like Glock was held up in traffic. I'll change my comment if I see different tonight.

Tom Martin

On camera, Glock definitely seemed way off line. I assumed it was because that part of the track was wet, and he was sliding on his dry tires, but 20 sec is fishy if that's right.

Mena

Went back and watched the last lap. Glock and Trulli were still on their dry tires. Everyone else was on intermediates. Trulli and Glock were running nearly identical times so that explains why Vettel and Hamilton flew by them. They (Glock and Trulli) wouldn't have been able to keep either of them behind.

Tom Martin

Hmmmm....... Did you see any timing and scoring on the lap time differences with the other leaders? 20 sec a lap would have had Massa et al lapping Glock since it started to rain with 5 to go.

Mena

It started raining a bit at 5 laps to go and everyone pitted at 4 laps to go. Trulli and Glock (still on dry tires) were doing 44's while the Massa, Vettel, and Hamilton were doing somewhere in the 30's (on intermediates). They (Glock and Trulli) were getting reeled in from last pit (for rain tires) for the most part. More than enough time for them to get caught especially since they were still on dry tires which have NO traction in the rain at all. Vettel was straight up hauling ass (I think he was even faster than Massa) and Hamilton was right behind him. I could see Glock conceding a position but definitely NOT Trulli. If Trulli could've put up a fight he would've.

As to the original question about the season, I thought it was really good. I liked the fact that Toro Rosso and BMW are becoming real contenders. Renault seems to be serious too. I also liked the degree to which the cars seemed to develop, which makes things a little unpredictable.

I have to admit I enjoyed the rain races, though somehow it doesn't seem quite like the real thing. And I had the feeling, wet or dry, that lack of TC made the drivers slightly less predictable.

I listened to the points discussion before the Brazil race and having a greater first-second point differential seems good. I don't recall how it worked when we had that though.

Mena

About the greater points differential in the past, I don't recall it really making a difference.
