GPS Data Logger for Track Days: VBox?
Tom Martin
I'm looking for a GPS data logger to measure track times, lateral accel, and speeds on different track sections. I've heard of the VBox, but the RaceLogic site is rather confusing. It seems to have been written by some computer geeks and lists 15 models with tech features (like CAN and Glasnost) but makes no connection with what my application is. Does anyone know which VBox (or other such device) is the basic one for this usage?

Green Chile Productions (Robert Marsa) just released a track day data iPhone app for autocross. I assume it can be used for other track day activities. It is now up on the iTunes store. It is called RaceDataAX and it collects acceleration and position data using the iPhone 3G's accelerometer and gps device. It can then show you animated course plots, multi-run overlays, and friction circles (g-g plots) to help you visualize your runs and see where you need to improve.
You can find more information about it at

The direct link to the iTunes store (requires iTunes) is:

$49.99, which seems high for an iPhone app but is much cheaper than dedicated offerings.

Thanks for your interest in RaceDataAX. While RaceDataAX will collect useful data from track events, another product coming in the near future will be better targeted at lapping.
RaceDataAX will auto start collecting data when you accelerate from the line, and stop when you manually press a button. This is ideal for autocross where each run begins at a start line and ends after you cross the timing line. At a track event, if you go out for a six lap session, RaceDataAX would record all of the data from the session as a single run. While this would be useful, it would be difficult to compare laps with each other.
The future product (RaceDataTrack) will recognize laps and record them separately to allow you to compare laps with each other.

Any chance RaceDataTrack will be done before next season starts (March)?

We eventually bought a TraqMate Complete to do some timing at the one of the tracks we use. The device is easy to set up, but the combination of a 3 line interface and somewhat sketchy instructions means we've done some laps yet not recorded times. It is early days and it may become obvious what we're doing wrong.
