Arkansas: Scenic 7
carkid
For anyone who enjoys twists and turns on a lightly traveled road in the middle of a beautiful forest, this drive is for you. Granted, our 2004 Jeep Cherokee might not have resulted in the best curve hugging drive of my life but, it can't be beat for car camping through the Ozarks.
We hit Highway 7 from Interstate 40 near Russellville and went North camping at Haw Creek Falls before continuing to Harrison. The next day we headed back South on Highway 65 to Gilbert for a paddle down the Buffulo River. We then continued our drive through the Ozarks on highway 27 back towards Highway 7 at Dover. From Dover, we traveled South to Hot Springs. Unfortunately, for about an 1 1/2 hours we were driving the hills and curves of the Ouachita National Forest in an unbelievable downpour. I'm sure it was equally as beautiful as our earlier experience.
Hot Springs was not on the original agenda so when we hit town and saw a place completely frozen in time (that time being around 1950 or earlier), we were really wishing we had checked out a service like VRBO.com or HomeAway to find some of the very cool accomodations available on Lake Hamilton just past the famous Bath House Row. Lesson learned!!
