Favorite Convertible Currently On Sale?
Steven J. Ewing

In honor of Issue 45 being our convertible issue, we've gone through and made a list of our ten favorite convertibles currently on sale.
Since there are so many more droptops available across the spectrum of manufacturers, we thought we'd ask you, our readers, what your favorite top-down automobile is? Remember, it has to be currently available for purchase (though we'll make exceptions if the car is really, really good).

I don't care what anyone says -- I love the Honda S2000 and S2000 CR, even if that car is really, really old. I'm sad that they're both being killed off after 2009 and that no replacement is on tap.

I agree with Steve about the S2000. After it's gone, the MX-5.

I thought about the convertibles I had enjoyed over the years and realized that each one was enjoyed with a different girlfriend and each one reflected the personality of the girlfriend involved.
The first was what we would now call a cougar. She was in great shape, in her mid 30's when I was 18, and raced a 1959 MGA. She taught me the proper way to use a manual transmission (among other things) and our relationship was, like a flare, hot, but short. I've forgotten her name, but I've never forgotten what she taught me. (And I've never forgotten the car either.)
The second was when I was 34 and had a white over white '73 Corvette with a red custom interior. Fran loved to be seen in this car and loved the wind in her hair. My favorite part was cruising on those cool, summer nights with the top down, Fran's head on my shoulder and the bright stars shining above.
The third was Paulette. She was the brainiest and the hottest girlfriend I had ever experienced. We borrowed a friend's newly restored black '61 Mercedes 190SL with burgundy leather seats and took off down the road. I won't finish this story, except to say that it had a very satisfactory conclusion.
Given my history with convertibles, I'd have to pick a grand touring two seater. I thought of the Corvette, but finally settled on the upscale, sport touring car; the Austin Martin V8 Vantage.

It is true that Honda S2000 is an ultimate car. No one is comparable to it.
