Is there some rule about the middle car in euro lineups that makes these designs the most bland?

Yeah, it seems as if the halo cars and the very smallest offerings (with Euro premium brands anyway) often get the bulk of the design love. I think the lesson is that the wide middle section of drivers, who drive the cars in the heart of most lineups, are also the most conservative.

Good point. The only "middle" car that has any sense of creativity is (maybe) the Lexus GS. Or the original Maxima.
