Spy photos of the Jaguar XF "R", 500 hp?

Shots of a hotter version of the Jag XF are floating around the internet today -- I noticed them on The Car Connection here .
The article suggest serious power for the mid-size cat:
"Researching the U.K. registration plates of prior XFR prototypes--which
had been caught testing in England earlier this year--suggested that
the pumped-up XF was running a 4997cc V-8. Reports out of the U.K.
suggest that this engine is supercharged, so something in excess of 500
hp is expected."
The vented hood and expanded rocker panels look mean, but I have a hard time believing the R will knock on 500 hp. Although I hope I'm wrong.

500hp would be a big surprise. I doubt it too.

As an aside, isn't it a sign that HP has jumped the shark when it seems every manufacturer can just rip off 400 hp cars like no big whup? The secret is in making complete packages that people want to buy. After all, the BMW M3 has a "lowly" 414 hp, but it's still one of the most desirable cars on the market.

Really!! It does seem to be fairly easy getting that much power in a reliable package. I would prefer lighter weight to big hp. Not saying big power isn't wanted but a light car would excel is other areas besides a straightline. 400 hp but at 2500 lbs would be awesome.
I hate saying stuff like this in public forums because some people don't believe that you can have your cake AND eat it too. Those people think you can only have one thing or the other. That simply isn't true (not anymore anyways).

I agree. I'd say that in addition to the low mass approach, some vehicles can actually be heavy (relatively) and powerful as long as they are developed with the right end product in mind. An example of a car that's heavy, powerful, but rather lifeless is the Dodge Magnum SRT8. Yes, it's fun in a straight line for a few squirts, but once you've hammered up and down a flat stretch of road it sort of loses its appeal. Not sort of -- it actually does lose its appeal.
The idea that HP makes a vehicle is simply crazy, yet that still remains one number people want to hear about.I hope that eventually we can move beyond it.
