Will BMW Indeed Bring The 1-series Hatchback to the U.S.?
Seyth Miersma
We haven't been given any sort of indication from BMW that the company will
offer the five-door version of its 1-series to U.S. customers, but that doesn't
stop us from wanting one. Further fueling that fire is the recent speculation
from a spy photographer that the next-generation BMW hatch will be on sale along
with the coupe and convertible.
Do you think that the growing American obsession with small cars and the
rising costs of gasoline will cause us to get over our traditional habits with
hatchbacks (that is to say, not buying them)? Will BMW have the chutzpah to
bring a premium small hatch our way?

Depending on how well the 1-series coupe/convertible take off, BMW may be inclined to bring over a hatchback variant. I could see the five-door doing well in the States.

I don't think there is need for it until they figure out how 1-series sales do over the course of a few months. I think a hatch 1 might be too close--in some ways--to Mini.

BMW will probably look to the A3 and C30 to see how they do in this market. I would love to see the 1 hatch over here, but I would rather see them lower the price a little bit for the 1 series across the board first.

I've only seen pictures of the previous 1-series hatchbacks, and it's a bit odd. I agree with it being priced a tad high, and it is much different from MINI (obviously RWD vs FWD, weight balance, power).

Does anyone have any data handy on how the Audi A3 and Volvo C30 are moving in America? I don't get the sense that either of them are selling terribly well, even in our rapidly-changing consumer environment. That's something of a shame, as they're both very nice drives, especially when they are lightly optioned.

Total US Audi sales as of the 1st quarter were even with last year. The A3' sales were up worldwide but couldn't find any specific info on the A3 in the US. Couldn't find any US info on the C30 either.
