Greatest supercar that never was?
Ducati Minor
We've seen many concepts or ideas, but what supercar or high-end exotic idea had the most chance to make its mark in history, but failed?

Callaway Twin-Turbo or Panoz anything? American exotics that could have been developed into world-class cars, but never were.

Excellent, Dave. The C111 is one of my all-time favorites. A Bruno Sacco classic.

Am I the only one who was saddened the Ford/Shelby GR1 amounted to nothing?
Mena
Never heard of that one. Looks pretty awesome though.

The GR1 was part of the Ford retro legacy series. It was "intended" to take up where the GT left off as Ford's premium sports car offering. The GR1 was inspired by the Shelby Daytona, but looked quite unique in its own right. The goal, as was printed in magazines, was to have the Mustang as the entry offering, the Shelby GT Mustangs as the mid-range, the Cobra as the stripped and bare $100K roadster, and the GR1 at the top of the chain.
Obviously, Ford's financial crisis killed that.

That is an actual supercar dude. We're talking about supercars that never made it to production.

An interesting argument could be made for Jag's XJ220 as it was originally scripted. By the time the production version rolled around, it had been altered dramatically from its original brief...

Always heard the XJ220 was a very rough car to drive. I've had the pleasure of being with one, but never driving it.

Definately the lack of vision of HONDA to improve their masterpiece: the NSX.
Imagine, Mc Laren asked Honda to build its F1 roadcar engine and they declined this fantastic offer.
Even worst, they abandon keeping up with competition. SHAME ON YOU HONDA.
Every real car enthousiast of this world WANTS the NSX.
Today this car should have near 500hp redlining @ 10k rpm ...

I second that motion! An abandoned potential masterpiece. Honda has dropped the ball across the board in regards to performance. Forward progress is the goal not backward! I'd just assume drive my 93 civic HB than the crap their putting out now. (OK I know that's off topic for supercars, just venting)

Chrysler ME412. Quad Turbo V-12. Weight-to-power ratio of 3.4 lbs/bhp. Top speed of 248 mph.
Incredible
Bugatti EB110. It was always about 90% finished. With more funding, perhaps it would go down next to the Veyron. For me, it's the utmost almost supercar. (Or should it be almost utmost?)
Incredible
As for the "Never Was" part, I second the votes for the Cadillac's - The Sixteen and the Cien. They were both potential epochal game changers.

Jaguar had designed the 220 and showed pictures of it to the public ans statd if they got enough orders they would build it. THe got enough orders and were in the process of production when Tom Wakinshaw racing Whom ran Jaguar's Lemans race team (remember the Silk Cut Jags) decided to build a roar car. What Wakinshaw came up with was the Jaguar XJR-15. It was light, beautiful, fast, and with the jag V12 was way less complicated than the jag 220 with it's twin turbo V6. Upon seeing the XJR-15, people that had money down on the 220 began cancelling their orders in order to get in line for the 15. Jaguar brass began to panic having way less committed buyers for the 220 than originally thought. They threatened to sue those would be customers that were backing out of the contracts. They evetually strong armed Wakinshaw into cancelling plans to sell XJR-15s to the general public. He agreed to only build and sell 50 for 1 million each and all buyers had to agree to race the car in an XJR-15 only race series. Prize money for winning the series would be 1 million dollars which meant if you won, your car was free. What mostly happened was rich guys bought them and hired F1 drivers to race them. I don't remember who won the series but the carbon tub beauty will always be one of my favorites. Do a google search if you haven't seen them.

XJR-15 was fantastic in conception, but the end result, as tested on Top Gear was said to be a disappointment with a very center balance that lead to awful handling characteristics

Going another direction - the GM EV1 - people wanted to drive this sexy little car, and most importantly people that had been driving it for its lease period loved it - and wanted to re-lease it, or buy it. As the zero emissions mandate had been killed by lobbyists (the only reason these cars ever got to market, along with the electric Ranger's and RAV 4's) - GM would not sell these units, or lease them again. Some risked - and were - arrested trying to prevent the destruction of these great vehicles. They followed GM when they forcibly removed the last few remaining cars, which were crushed in the desert.
I believe the range on these cars was already about 100 miles on a charge, and better batteries were already available even way back then by the time the first leases had expired. It seems like we have gone backwards with the electric cars, though I love the Prius.
While not a hot rodder, I am a car enthusiast, and currently drive a 99 Mustang six auto - and as I do very little driving right now, don't need to trade it in for quite a while. I love my old 75 Dodge Dart swinger I used to have, as well as my 1970 Dart I had later, plus the new Challenger (if it had an interior besides black) – but my next car will be something much more efficient. If I move back to snowy Missouri, probably an Escape 4WD hybrid, as I am afraid of that white stuff -

It isn't a high end exotic nor is it a supercar, but I always wanted to see the 1988 Pontiac Banshee come into production.. the tech on that thing at the time was Knight Rider kewl, and it was even featured in the Y2K version of that very same show as the new K.I.T.T...
It's where the more recent Firebirds and Trans-Ams got there styling... looks aside though, it was really all about the tech.. in 88 no less..

Corvette Indy.. Lusted after that thing as a kid.. and they never made them.. :(
There was a concept of a Camero station wagon.. that was pretty funny.. Glad they didn't make that!

It's not a super car, but Ford dropped the ball when they came out with the 500 (nee Taurus) instead of the Forty-Nin. It would have sold at least as well as the Dodge Charger/Chrysler 300.
Many Thanks

The Forty-nine was a looker ...another non super car showcased at the 2001 Detroit Auto Show (as was the 49) was the VW micro-bus . Too bad that never rolled .

They did build a 2nd generation NSX. But only for the japanese market. Fixed headlights is the easiest way to tell the differance.
The biggest exterior changes for the NSX came in 2002 when it received a facelift with fixed headlights and various other cosmetic refinements such as xenon HID headlamps (see photo from LA Autoshow 2003). The fixed roof NSX was dropped for the 2002 model year. The suspension was revised and the NSX received larger wheels and tires. In addition, the NSX was available in a number of exterior colors with either a matching or black interior to provide a number of possible color combinations.
[edit] Second Generation NSX-R (JDM)
A second iteration of the Type-R dubbed NSX-R was released in 2002, again exclusively in Japan. The second generation NSX-R had a more aggressive rear spoiler and hood vent, along with larger yet lighter wheels to reduce weight to 1270 kg (2800 lb). The rear spoiler was said to be the largest one-piece carbon-fibre spoiler in production cars. Under the body, panels and air fences in the front along with a small rear diffuser serve to produce balanced "negative lift" or downforce.

How about the Chrysler ME Four-Twelve? ... AMC's AMX/3 perhaps?

Lotus Etna!
The car that should have saved Lotus but almost became it's downfall. With it's small but efficient V8 engine and revolutionary but too complicated Active Suspension in 1984 this was a revolution on wheels. And it looked good too!
Lotus was and still is is "my" make, the Etna the dream car that could have been but never was...until 2 weekends ago! At the classics show at palace Het Loo in Holland I stumbled upon the only Lotus Etna in the world. Couldn't believe my eyes!
Seems it's now owned by a Dutchman who took the effort to change this showcar without drivetrain and without engine into an actual driving car!

The Cizeta-Moroder V16T was, in my estimation, the most phenominal supercar that never was. The V-16 engine was transversely mounted and the drive came from the center of the engine, forward to the longitudinally mounted transaxle. The car was exquisitely gorgeous with sensuous hips (quarters) that rode high and were rather wide when compared to other vehicles. The Cizeta-Moroder V16T. Now that was a fantastic automobile!

ok, maybe not a supercar BUT how about the ProDrive P2?

Well, let's go back a little further to the ATS (Automobili Turismo e Sport)GT and GTS. Seems to me it was around 1963 or 1964 that they came out with a 2.5 liter, mid-engined V-8 powered coupe, the engine a derivation of the powerplant used in their F1 entries. For those who don't know, one of ATS's founders was Carlo Chiti, Ferrari's chief engineer until a rift with Enzo. It was a VERY pretty car for the time, quite original for the time, and weighing at most about 2000 lbs. Maybe not a supercar as defined in this era, but for it's time, a very high performance GT.

The Mercedes C111 is my vote as well. I can only imagine this almost safety-orange Wankel-wonder on the autobahn with Rudi Uhlenhaut behind the wheel at 180+. Pure German science and lust melded into a stunning package that came out at a time when Mercedes was otherwise completely staid and upright in manner.

The early Chrysler Turbine. It could have put the car market on it’s ear! From what I have seen, only about 100 of these cars were ever made. I have seen a few up close and would love to have one.

I would nominate the Jaguar XJ13. Designed in the early 60's to regain glory for the Jaguar marquis by repeating their 50's wins at La Mans. But alas, it was not to be. Cash strapped, the company was not able to devote the resources to develop the car in a timely manner and in the end technical advavces and race rule changes rendered it uncompetitive. A disastrous crash at MIRA during a press introduction of the V12 engine in the XKE all but finised the car forever. Fortunately,it was rebuilt and now resides in the Jaguar/Daimler Heritage Museum in the UK. From time to time it is brought out and run for special events and shows. One can only dream what the impact of a production version of this early vintage Super Car would have had on the world's automotive stage.
