Oil Prices Fall; Will It Change What You Drive?

dieselhead

Some form of mild panic set in when gasoline topped $4 a gallon in the US. Now that oil prices are retreating and probably stabilizing (before beginning a more gradual ascent?), will a period of oil price stability change buying behavior yet again?

Mena

No. It will take ~$10 gas before I change what I drive BUT my wife is hankering for a car to drive once the truck is paid off. And we've always had fuel efficient but fun cars anyways (although fuel efficiency was NOT the number one priority). The MINI Cooper S coupe or convertible is high on the list.

I think gas would have to go down a lot farther in order to change people's habits again.

Not at this point.  You would need to have a steady decline in cost and a long period of low fuel prices.  Even then, however, I believe the ecological and geo-political ties to reduce petroleum demand in the US will keep the notion of cutting back and buying smaller more appealing.

I think, if anything, people would only buy fuel inefficient (which would probably be fuel efficient by todays standards) cars as weekend playtoys much like people use sports cars today.
