Scion iQ or Smart ForTwo?
John Beltz Snyder
Today, Scion unveiled the iQ concept minicar at the New York Auto Show. That leaves us wondering what you think about it. Do you like it better than the Smart ForTwo?

The Scion, definitely. It looks a little more conventional than the Smart, but it's also more practical and probably more reliable, etc. etc.

I agree, the scion definately looks more like a "car" and less like a "bumper-car". From the ratings Ive seen, it doesnt look like that bad off a piece of machiner either. Im gonna look pretty high tech drivin' my Scion and smoking an Electronic Cigarette. People are gonna think Im Elroy from the Jetsons...lol..

It's been proven that the big auto makers DO NOT want to sell tiny cars. The Smart is $16,000+ with a/c and aluminum wheels? The Smart also comes with an automatic transmission. How does a sub-one liter car put up with a/c, 2 people and an automatic? It should have a 6 speed manual with 6th being an extreme overdrive. It would get at least 50 mpg freeway. The Scion (Toyota) should come with an option of a manual transmission, a/c and a decent sound system. If they can get it done for under $13,000, they will have a hit.

That's a foolish point. Few commuters operate or desire to operate stick-shift in congested traffic. Drivers want as little burden to themselves as possible. A six-speed isn't that.

The Smart is $13,990 with AC and alloy wheels. The transmission is an automated manual.

The iQ looks like a performance car with it's wide stance and low profile tires. It's body proportions and styling make it look sporty and racey. The iQ make's the Smart look rather drab and uninspirered in comparison. However, the interior finish of the iQ looks very low end. An upgrade to the seats would make it more appealing.

In 1975, I bought my first brand new car, a 1975 Honda Civic. I loved that car. It felt quicker than it was. The 5 speed was a delight to shift. It cornered like a go cart, had an amazing amount of room for such a small car and got great gas milage. Best of all, I could afford it.
Thirty-four years later, Toyota comes out with the perfect car to hit the same market segment. If I was 23 years old and married with a new baby. I would be rushing down to my local Scion dealer to put my name on the waiting list. Good job, Toyota.
Many Thanks

One reason why Smart never took off in Europe was the very limited engine offerings. That small car had worse gas mileage than most four person subcompacts and even compacts. With the design and technology as dated as it is, I don't think anyone would go for the Smart.
On the other hand, though the Scion IQ has nice looks (with the front of the car looking like a grinning vampire), it's not using the small space available for a minicar efficiently. I would like to see its mileage numbers. Until they are available, I would still go for the 2011 Fiesta, even though it is a Ford and it looks like a normal car...

Xenon, what 4-person compacts & subcompacts are getting better than 65 mpg in Europe? That's what the smart fortwo gets there. The diesel version gets even better than that. If fuel economy is what you want, smart is the way to go - short of a Prius or Civic Hybrid.

A convertible IQ would be nice!

The iQ is really cute! I like the aggressive fender flares and the wide tires. I know that narrow tires are more fuel efficient than wide ones, but the better looks and handling of the wide ones are well worth it!
Yellow is not my color. I Photoshopped the color saturation to get white and the iQ looked so much better!
Those horrible rear seat head rests that block the rear window have to go! Perhaps ‘U’ shaped ones that slide down over the seat when not needed, like on the Fit, would be better.
Don’t like the fishnet look of the seats, or the ‘pop-up’ Nav!
Most important, the iQ must have a good transmission! Just nice FIVE speed automatic and manual! No goofy Smart trany, or old four speed automatic!!
Make it a really nice quality car that just happens to be small and efficient – not a cheapo Yaris or Yugo!!

For me it will come down to price and release date. I have held off from my smart car purchase to watch for the iQ, but no word on price or release date and my elderly car is getting older. If iQ comes out soon and is comparable priced I will definitely go with the Toyota brand name. Smart has proven itself though. For me it will come down to price and whether my current vehicle can hold out that long. I love the color on this concept! Hopefully that will be available. The usual colors are just too invisible for a car this tiny.
