Future Watch: Lebanon’s First Supercar? Frem F1 is headed to Detroit Auto Show

With his eventual goal to bring fame and automotive glory to his homeland of Lebanon, 25-year-old design student David Frem has completed the first stage in what he characterizes as “a dream to make a car that could race Ferrari” – the wildly strange Frem F1.

A product of three years of study, three years of “rather hard work”, a ballsy and single-minded determination, and more than a few styling cues from Ferrari’s Enzo supercar; the Frem should get extra points for the passion behind it, if none for the execution. While Frem concedes that the F1 is just a step on the path towards the construction of an honest supercar – a project that has already been appropriately dubbed “F2” – the car still has the running gear to make it a vaguely sporting drive, at least on paper. The oily bits are mostly of Volkswagen origin, with a 2.0-liter (we’re guessing the “2.00 cc” designation is a slight misprint) 16-valve engine and Audi gearbox. The F1 has a theoretical top speed of 124 miles per hour though its “wood and fabric” interior doesn’t exactly seem up to the jostling of triple-digit speeds, even if its hand-made body could stand the fury.

Frem’s F1 is, as far as we can make out anyway, the first and only all-Lebanese supercar ever attempted, and will do its damnedest to represent its Beirut origins when it comes to the hallowed halls of Cobo for the North American International Auto Show in 2009. You can bet that we’ll be all over Frem’s stand in Detroit, with many more images and details regarding Frem’s vision.

Give it up for David Frem for trying! I'll give props to anyone who trys to do something new and out of the ordinary, that's how mankind progesses. There will always be naysayers saying it can't be done. Thank God Edison, Marconi, Edward Teller and others didn't listen to that rabble. Try and fail, but try! Be a player not a poser!

I think I am the kind of person capable of doing a similar project if given the funding and time away from work. I've CAD modelled out vehicles, either to scale of production vehicles, or my own 3D creations. I've worked with kit cars, modding, and tuning quite a bit and I think I could someday pull something like this off. I plan to at least try. That being said, I don't think the Frem F1 is half bad. Major problems are with power and chassis strength, which is a very difficult aspect of planning let alone the build process. If he is confident enough to push his concept into triple digit speeds that's really saying a lot. Good job David Frem!

Instead of posting critical comments, we should applaud this young man that made his dream come true. It matter not if the project is not to your taste, but at least he had the balls to do it in an environment which is - to say at the very least - pretty sombre. It may be ugly for some, but I guess (Ken and Ducati Minor) you would rather buy a generic shit box and stick some spoilers, stickers and other crap of the local speed shop.... Get real, get up your bum and do something like this chap's done. And stupid comments like "palestinians explosives"...this is pathetic. Dumb arse all right. Shame on you. Creating political innuendo serve no good to anyone.

i live in lebanon n have seen the car up close, i think its absolutely ugly! i admire david's determination though, it did take a lot of time n a lot of hard work...
the Frem F2 design is much better, i wish he built that instead...

You guys have 2 remember that there are no factories in the country that produce engines, chassis, trannys... he had 2 do with what was available... if this car is 2 be built commercially (hopefully after a thorough make over), it obviously wont have a 2L VW engine...
you all might think its easy, but lets see you try it with such limited resources, and especially in an unstable country... and then u gotta remember that the average income 4 the lebanese population is just $400 a month, lets see u try n build smthn like this with such a limited budget... the chassis was constructed out of welded bits of metal 4 gods sake!

also, this is a car site, the only thing that should be spoken abt is cars... starting political arguments is just stupid, u want 2 bash other countries/cultures then go 2 another site...

This is a dream come true, or at least a dream start to roll and come true as this is not final stage, about a strong willed determined person leading the way and chasing after his ambitious goals and building something out of nothing, and as others have noted already this is not in a stable country, and there was very little financing to the project. Also to ignore the dangerous situation in the country and keep building your dream has alot to say, i think an explosion did happen some 40 meters away from the garage where he was building it, try over coming your fears and chase after your dreams in such situation and I stil dont think anyone can outclass and challenge Frem. way to go bro! GOD'S SPEED!!!

Im 18 years old and as a struggling student who enjoys racing UGG
