General Motors Files For Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
General Motors, one of the world's largest automakers, has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this morning, claiming $82 billion in assets versus $172 billion in debts. So, what next? GM will go through the process of deciding which of its products to keep, the not-so-lucky ones being liquidated. The United States government will be chipping in a total of $30 billion to assist in this cause.
The Detroit Free Press reports that the government will have a 60 percent stake in GM, but in a "hands-off," non-interference sort of style, meaning that no White House employees will actually work for the automaker. However, the government will have the power to influence the decisions of GM, including things like selecting the board of directors and assisting in major corporate transactions.
