GM Delays Cruze, CTS Coupe, LaCrosse, and Saab Models

Cruze

Due to rising development costs, the folks at General Motors are having to delay a number of models that were originally scheduled to launch within the next couple of years, namely the Cadillac CTS Coupe, Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Cruze, Saab 9-5, and Saab 9-4X.

The Cruze was set to replace the Chevrolet Cobalt and delaying it now puts GM behind the small car trend. The Cruze is a very important car for the General, but GM is determined to have the Cruze released in the U.S. by 2010. The CTS Coupe and LaCrosse aren't expected to be high-volume cars anyway, so delaying these models shouldn't hurt too much. As for the Saabs, the 9-5 is an old car riding on an old platform and is in desperate need of a refresh replacement, while the 9-4X is still in final development at this time.

In the meantime, GM is expanding its development in other areas -- namely plug-in hybrids. The Chevrolet Volt is currently in the works, but we're told that other plug-ins could be arriving within the next few years.

I sense the beginning of the end for GM if Washington doesn't do nothing...

If Washington does nothing, what is the worse case scenario, bankruptcy? Many of our major airlines have filed for bankruptcy, some several times. They are mostly still with us. GM should file for bankruptcy if they can't survive. Their problems are not short term. They have been losing market share for decades and billions of dollars for years. The only way they can hope to change into a competitive company is to make the hard changes the bankruptcy will require. GM is not going anywhere soon. There are many stories about what the absence of GM would mean. These are just stories made up to get sympathy. We currently have a process for companies in this situation. It has worked many times in the past. Lets trust the market.

The problem with there is what said: the airlines have done it.  A lot.  They've restructured many times, but have still had to contend with strong unions.  I don't believe bankruptcy will kill off the UAW.  I wish it would.

But it won't.

GM would still need emergency capital if it could get some court protection.  That capital would require government involvement.  Lenders are broken, and you'd either need a portion of the fed bailout or federal assistance in acquiring the loan.  That, in a Democratic government, would mean concessions that would preserve the UAW.  You can't say Republicans would do any better--Dubya has done squat.

None of these problems are unique to GM. Bankruptcy has worked in the past in high capital requirements. Nothing convincing here. Sounds like a big gov leftist position.

"The Cruze was set to replace the Chevrolet Cobalt and delaying it now puts GM behind the small car trend."

Steven, have you been sleeping. GM is already far behind. Have you been in a Cobalt and it's competitors?

I drive two GM vehicles but can't stand the prospect of $50 billion being dumped into the company. Capitalism has got to win out at some point. Just my opinion.

GM's problems go beyond simply being strapped for cash and in need of a couple refreshed models. The Cruze isn't going to save GM, the Malibu isn't going to save GM, and throwing money at it because GM is a big employer isn't gonna keep this Titanic afloat. Someone needs to step in and take drastic action immediately if GM is going to see 2018. The entire operation needs to change, and quick.

Good products are what change consumer sentiments, Trinks.  The Ford Taurus itself is what helped carry Ford forward in the 1980s.

Trinks

I agree. I meant these models alone aren't going to save the whole company. Neither will a huge influx of cash, if GM's just going to piss it away on strategies that haven't and won't work.

I think GM is wasting money over bullshit. Who cares about the volt? they made all the fuss about it and now when it is out no body has noticed shit. They should have focused on a Cobalt, DTS, STS, G6, Saabs replacements. These cars have been in the market for too long, and while all the competetion changed the models in the each respective segment, GM keeps on refining their current models. YOU CAN'T TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS, JUST EUTHANIZE IT AND GET YOURSELF A NEW DOG.

GM wanna build a new LaCrosse. Hell, GM should shut buick completely (long time ago). These cars are as boring as tiger woods and Golf (i won't say golf sport coz golf is not a sport). Buick has no special charecter between GM brands. It is not as luxurious as caddy (GM would not allow that), it is not as cheap as chevy (GM would not allow that as well), and it is so far away from sporty. So why do they keep it (besides for the stupid UAW agreement reasons)?

oollyoumn

When you say "...Volt...out.." you must mean the "production look". The Volt is 2+ years from being out, assuming GM will be around then. I agree with let it die. I've owned too many GMs to ever want another.

Note to Obama; please do not waste our money.

I'm getting to wonder about all of this and something smells fishy here. I'm talking about this:

http://www.gasgoo.com/auto-news/1008305/GM-aims-to-raise-stake-in-China-...

Why, if GM is is such dire straights is it spending more money and in China?
Come to think of it, GM isn't doing as bad abroad as it seems to be in the US so where has all the rum gone? Corporate wasteful spending and plenty of bad bad decisions are the downfals of GM here in the US.

To paraphrase another's post: it's all about that GM won't meet their "Projected Financial Goals" and not as much that they are going flat broke. That, is complete rubbish.

GM also just announced a new plant in Russia. Where is that money coming from? GM has no loyalty to US or its workers. If GM gets a hand-out, it will likely be used to buy Chrysler first. We see how the banks are using their hand-outs.

ultra short Le its becoming extremely expensive and harder to
attend and enjoy a days racing.
Sure a student with a part time UGGS upside job would
have to save for a few weeks to consider attending a raceday as expensive as
this. I see that
Fairyhouse are racing on the 19th of this month and are charging UGGS

Its up to other tracks to follow suit and use some initiative to offer better
