GRM's 1977 Saab 99 Rallycross Build

We love Grassroots Motorsports magazine, largely because they don’t shy away from taking in oddball and unloved misfits from the past. They pour in a little bit of money and a whole lot of elbow grease and skill, and come up with unique project cars with a competition bent.

One of our favorites that is currently in their fleet is a 1977 Saab 99, a car quite similar to the one that this author grew up with. The boys at GRM bought it last April for $1400, and have since prepped the coupe for rallycross stage rally action, a discipline for which the car both is well suited and well known. The brown Swede has needed everything from a new clutch to a radiator, wiring, and rust repair work, along with competition necessities like a rollcage, rally-computer, skid plates, and competition-spec suspension.

You can catch up on their Project 99 rallycross car by reading the full blow-by-blow buildup here .

love those old 2 digit saabs....

Glad you like our 99!

One slight correction: We're actually competing in stage or performance rally with this car, not rallycross. Rallycross here in the states is more along the lines of autocross on dirt...while fun, that's not what this car was built for. Stage rally is done at much higher speeds with a co-driver babbling away about all the cautions/crests/yumps/don'tcuts that really make the event hair-raising.

Thanks for the post!
