High School Students Scratch Build Electric Motorcycle

Part of the Experimental Vehicle Team from Saint Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, a team of high school students designed and fabricated a lithium-phosphate-ion-powered motorcycle. It can travel at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour for at least 50 miles before needing a charge and even has safety features such as "crush zones" made from compressible materials.

The next item on the agenda for these innovative students is a solar charging station to make the bike truly carbon free.

One of 16 high schools that received a $10,000 grant from InvenTeams, the team was told to identify a real world problem and invent a practical solution. The motorbike is expected to be displayed at MIT next week.

Don't know if the present boom in EV interest is another short-term fad, but I'm glad more interest is coming out for them. I was watching a Fox News story about a Florida-based engineer who specializes in modifying sports cars (notably Porsches) and converting them to electric power. The 993 Turbo looked splendid. If I had the money, I'd love to convert a Maserati Merak--rather, have it converted for me. If it can have a 150 mi. range, I'll be pleased.

Looks great, especially considering the concept was designed and constructed by High School students. The overall design and futuristic appeal is definitely something I could see parked next to a Tesla Roadster in the near future. I can almost guarantee both Tesla Motors and the makers of bikes like this will offer solar charging packages from companies like Solar City. The idea of solar charging and zero emissions is one that is sure to take off in the near future. The challenge is getting people to switch, but by simply providing the rock hard evidence as to the overwhelming impact one can have on the environment when switching to ZE, the answer should be a no brainer. Did I mention the amount of money we would all be saving? I also believe that the early adaptors are simply using the current models as status symbols and in order for a mass overhaul of the majority; a larger more drastic change is needed. For me, going from 20mpgs to zero emissions and 220 miles per charge would be quite the drastic change and an opportunity that I personally would be willing to partake in, but as long as people continue to focus on the idea of switching from 20mpg’s to 40mpg’s the decision to switch will be one that few choose to accept.

Great idea and design! It looks rather similar to the BMW C1 scooter that is only sold in Europe. The C1 has a "roll cage" has a windshield and semi-solid back, and a 3-point seatbelt that according to European laws, allows the driver to go helmetless. The rear section has a luggage rack with slim pads for a passenger who must wear a helmet and hold onto handles that are built into the frame. I hope the students perfect their idea and are able to secure some sort of contract for production. Their idea is a great step/leap in the right direction.
