Honda Insight Concept Revealed Before Paris Auto Show

Honda has revealed the first official image of its next generation Insight Concept, set to be revealed in full force at this year’s Paris Auto Show in just about a month.

The Honda concept shares some styling cues with the FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle, though it’s hard to overlook its obvious resemblance to the Toyota Prius as well. Like the Prius, the Insight concept will offer the versatility of a five-door hatchback configuration, and gain the aerodynamic benefits of the reduced front end profile. Despite its visual similarity, Honda claims that the Insight will be priced “significantly below hybrids available today,” when the car debuts in the U.S. market next spring.

The Insight will go on sale with rather huge expectations from its parent company, which says that it expects to sell on the order of 200,000 examples worldwide, and more than 100,000 units in the U.S. alone. Those hybrid sales will also be boosted with the launch of a smaller, sportier model based on the CR-Z concept, after the Insight is revealed.

Honda will reveal a concept version of its new small hybrid vehicle, to be named Insight, at the 2008 Paris International Auto Show, October 2, the company announced today. The new Insight Concept shares styling cues with the Honda FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle and will provide an early look at the highly-anticipated five-passenger hybrid vehicle.

Going on sale in the U.S. next spring, the all-new purpose-built Insight will come to market at a price significantly below hybrids available today. From this unique position in the marketplace, the Insight will advance the affordability and accessibility of hybrid technology to a new generation of buyers.

"The original Honda Insight pioneered hybrid technology in the U.S. and remains a symbol of Honda's commitment to innovative technology and fuel efficiency," said Takeo Fukui, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. CEO. "This new Insight will break new ground as an affordable hybrid within the reach of customers who want great fuel economy and great value."
The Insight Concept defines a new stage in the evolution of hybrid technology by utilizing a more cost-efficient version of Honda's Integrated Motor Assist™ (IMA™) hybrid technology, resulting in a new level of affordability for hybrid customers worldwide. Evoking the innovative styling cues first seen in the FCX Clarity, the Insight Concept is designed with a low center of gravity and a generous five-passenger cabin, offering the kind of driving pleasure and roomy interior that customers have come to expect from Honda. While the Insight Concept's aerodynamic design clearly identifies its fuel efficient purpose, its five-door access and folding rear seats speak to functionality that is designed to meet the needs of customers with an active lifestyle. The Insight Concept is a small, fuel efficient hybrid car that delivers big style and functionality with a healthy dose of fun.

Honda achieved a significant cost reduction in Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) components which should make Insight the most affordable hybrid vehicle to date. The production Insight will be offered as a five-door, five-passenger hatchback. Numerous technologies, including a function to assist customers in achieving more fuel efficient driving habits, will be applied to achieve a further improvement in real world fuel efficiency. With its affordable price, the new hybrid vehicle will represent the best value in its segment. Along with the Civic Hybrid, the new vehicle will be produced at an expanded hybrid vehicle production line at the Suzuka factory in Japan.

The Insight is expected to have annual global sales of 200,000 units per year - approximately 100,000 in North America. Following the launch of the new Insight, Honda also plans to introduce another unique sporty hybrid vehicle based on the CR-Z, first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. All together, Honda's global sales of hybrids should increase to approximately 500,000 units a year, or more than 10 percent of its total worldwide annual automobile sales.

The original Honda Insight was introduced in December 1999 as America's first gas-electric hybrid car. The first vehicle to break the 70-mpg fuel economy barrier, Insight was designed from the ground up to demonstrate the ultimate potential for fuel-economy in a two-seater subcompact automobile.

A leader in the development of cleaner, more fuel-efficient mobility products, Honda introduced the first low-emission gasoline vehicles; America's first gas-electric hybrid car and the world's first EPA-certified hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, the FCX. In 2007, Honda was named "greenest automaker" by the Union of Concerned Scientists for the fourth straight time.

Prius anyone? I can appreciate that these cars are windtunneled until they're blue in the face, but how about a little bit of design character separate from the Toyota?

Couldn't agree more,a dreadful design.

Clearly the outline is very Prius like, but the detail are different and much more attractive on the Insight. The headlights of the Prius are particularly ugly.

Reily Brennan

Yea that is true, it does look better than the Prius. I guess I was wrong, I am a jerk.

Mena

It's ugly.

I don't think so.  I like it.  The Prius design isn't so bad.

It has a boatload of interior space, an aerodynamic shape, and good numbers.  It isn't a bad model to follow.  What Honda will need to do is make this a genuine step ahead of the Prius at a time when Toyota is following that up.

In spite of the comparison of the Insight design to the Prius, I see more design lineage of the original Insight (1999-2006 models), sans rear wheel skirts. The original Insight is an example of a successful and logical product design that was well thought through. Unfortunately, the timing was off when the car was introduced when the public was infatuated with SUVs; no fault of the car itself. To achieve the lowest wind drag resistance possible, every design means were used to accomplish a low coefficiency factory, something in the low .20s. The body is aluminum to reduce weight with sparse but adequate interior creature comfort and utility. It's a proof that "form follows function" yields the best design. My current car, a 2002 Insight, records a lifetime gas consumption of 65.6 mph. I hope the new Insight will match or better that.

JohnD

I agree with Ducati, and Albert.

The new insight looks like a five door hatchback so in that sense is similar to the prius. But then I live in the UK where 5 doors are the norm maybe to US the Prius and Insight are similar because 5 doors are much less common.
It certainly isnt ugly this is the most overused comment on the internet ! It could maybe be more exciting but that criticism can be fired at most cars ! It certainly isnt as dramatic as the euro civic but that might not sell in the US but then again it might ! maybe Honda has decided to be more conservative in light of the Acura Beak !

wow...i can understand the automakers' frustration with the 'public' - spend millions in R&D, to/from the drawing board, make it this, make it that, all to try & please a fickle nation more concerned w/ HP & what the moron in the car/SUV next to me might think than actual practicality, fuel efficiency, safety, etc. so it doesn't look like a lambo...WHO F'N CARES? isn't it obvious that no matter what it looked like, there'd be a bunch of yahoos who think it's 'ugly' or looks like some other car (which, obviously, is a horrible, horrible thing).

that's ok, keep buying those gas-guzzling, over-powered 'family' sedans & SUVs...no one's going to tell you what you can buy. i'm sure the price at the pumps is going down drastically...any day now. in the meantime, here's a little tidbit - the big 3 US automakers are filing a petition for a waiver to the previously agree-upon 2015/2020 cutoffs for raising avg. MPG. at the same time, they're requesting gov't money (in the billions) to aid in their quest to achieve the MPG which THEY ARE ADMITTING THEY WON'T (AND AREN'T TRYING) TO MEET. so, the gov't is going to hand out billions of taxpayer money to the big 3 so they can meet the mandate, and then the gov't is going to waive the requirement to meet the mandate. well, that's money well spent!

PS - most of the japanese automakers are on pace (or already achieving) the mandated requirements. they will not be requesting waivers, nor will they be receiving gov't handouts. they will continue to produce quality vehicles. people will continue to buy them. and the big 3 will fade into, as mike tyson said, 'bolivian.'

All of the comments suggesting similarities between Toyota and Honda have been made by people who have never looked at wind tunnel experiments and results. Many years ago when tunnel modeling was all the rage, several forward looking companies (like our big three as well as Mercedes) projected what shape the "car of the future" would take and they all arrived at the same conclusion: it would look like a cross between a jelly bean and an almond. Personal transportation will of necessity dictate that all vehicles look virtually identical because its the only shape which makes sense. Automobiles are not shoes or hats. They are our means of conveyance not a fashion statement. Why do you think aircraft look so very similar? If you want to go fast and do so safely and efficiently, stop complaining about what the designer handed you.
